View Full Version : MoFos - Identify Your Gender!
Captain Steel

This idea goes back to other sites. It's more than just a "getting to know you" idea...
Have you ever been surprised that a person you've been communicating with is not the gender you thought they were (or that their avatar projects)?
Do you communicate with males / females (or "other") differently? Would you perhaps be a little less harsh, less profane or more polite if you knew the gender of the person you're addressing (or disagreeing with) from the start?
You'd be surprised at some of the answers.
What's your gender? Care to share?

Yep a few different times. Though HK was female at first.

Suppose i do a bit but not noticeably really. I joke with females differently, think that's the main difference.
What's your gender?
Male.
I was answering that second question as in real life. Don't think i do online.

Captain Steel

Male here.
But I'm very in touch with my X chromosome. (Which means I'm sensitive and can enjoy just talking with women.)
One way I'm distinctly male is that I'm rarely cold. (Is it just me or do women always say they're cold for some reason? Is this like code or something? Do they mean they want to be held? Or are they part reptilian?)
I get thrown off easily by people's avatars - is it someone they gender-identify with, someone they're attracted to, or just someone they admire?
Miss Vicky

I've misgendered people on MoFo and elsewhere on the net quite a few times. It's easy to do when you can't see or hear the person and all you have to go on is a username and a few contextual clues.
That said, what really amazes me is how many times I've been misgendered by other people here. I'm not a ****ing drag queen, people. I am a bitch named Victoria and I use a man as my avatar because I would like to **** the man in my avatar.
As to whether I talk to people on here differently depending on their gender, I don't think so. I'd say it depends much more on what I think of you and how much we've interacted.
Im constantly surprised. a few times by genger but mostly by peoples age-
I dont think i speak to people differently based on gender but i probably speak a bit differently by age.

I think I've said this somewhere before, but I tend to assume everyone online is a guy unless they have a username with a female identifier in it (like Miss Vicky for instance).
If someone has a female avatar that is really sexy looking, I assume it's a guy. But if they have a female avatar that is not sexualized, I might be more inclined to think that they're female. In either case, I'll use whatever pronoun I see other people using in relation to them until corrected.
I myself am female, but I completely understand why people would assume I'm a guy. I'm not exactly ladylike in behaviour (especially not IRL where I swear like a drunken sailor), and my tastes and hobbies are typically associated with being masculine.
It never bothers me when people think I'm male. If I was someone else I'd probably think I was male too.

I'm fairly certain I've seen other people refer to you as male, so I just always assumed you were. Otherwise, having "Mr" in your name would generally override having a female avatar though, since avatars are easy to change but names are not (or at least I don't think they are).
Pretty sure he has said it isn't Mister, that's why it isn't Mr.Minio. I think it is m r minio

Why? Stereotypes.
You have Dr. Strange as your avatar. Comic Geeks (that label itself being a completely negative stereotype) are typically male (that assumption itself being a stereotypical biased generalization).
I know that it's a complete stereotype nowadays, yet when I was in my comic collecting heyday it was rare to find a girl that was into comics (and if you did she was usually very weird and would end up becoming a rocket scientist or a lesbian... or both). ;)
I am rife with stereotypes. (It's my favorite font! And if there isn't a font named that, there should be.)

That's completely understandable.
I pretty much always have male avatars (even on Skype) because male characters are just typically more interesting than female ones, probably due to most writers being male. I don't know if I can even name any female characters I really like across any medium.
I've made a number of costumes for Halloween, theme parties, and comic and sci-fi conventions, and all but one of them were male. For a convention earlier this year I went as Kimmy Schmidt (from the Netflix show), not because I really like that show or anything (I just think it's fine), but I didn't have the money to buy any materials and wanted to go as a recognizable character who just wears regular clothes. Also I didn't have any wigs and didn't want to dye my hair so I needed to choose a red head. If I had the money, I was going to make a classic Doctor Strange costume instead.
I know that it's a complete stereotype nowadays, yet when I was in my comic collecting heyday it was rare to find a girl that was into comics (and if you did she was usually very weird and would end up becoming a rocket scientist or a lesbian... or both). ;)
It might be a stereotype, but a lot of people (at least around here) still think that way. Apparently I look "normal" (I don't wear licensed clothes, but my bag does have a lot of comic, video game, and movie pins on it) so people are usually surprised by my hobbies when I start talking about them. At shops or events people tend to think I'm just there because I'm someone's girlfriend, which is one thing I do actually find offensive.
I am a bit weird though. But I'm not a rocket scientist lesbian. "Rocket Scientist Lesbians" does sound like a pretty fun, campy low budget movie...or a porno. Or both. ;)

I actually have a job that requires a lot of lifting and moving moderately heavy objects (I put out stock and merchandise at a department store). I have no trouble throwing around luggage and large boxes of shoes. However, if I'm home or out somewhere and something heavy needs to be lifted, I do pull the "I'm a girl and thus weak so you do it" card if there are any guys around.
Unless the men are taking too long or cannot do it themselves (most of the guys I know are pretty weak actually). Then I tell them to step aside.

I like that this particular position does not normally involve dealing with customers, because I worked in customer-facing positions for longer than I'd like.
We go in early, before the store opens (I get up at 4am to get ready and walk to work), and we used to be off when the store opened at 10, but they've since started opening at 9:30 so we have half an hour where we might have to deal with customers. If there are a lot of projects that need to be done, we might work until 2pm, and I hate those shifts because I'd rather just get our work done instead of having to stop and deal with bitchy customers.
I also have a second job where I do product demonstrations, which is 100% customer interaction, so I like that my main job is mostly customer-free.

Your post made me giggle because you sound just like a long time retail employee. Dealing with customers is such a chore. Add to that the ones that are messy and the ones who steal, it quickly becomes a nightmare. I don't miss it. Healthcare, what I'm in now, still has customer service aspects but in such a different way. It is actually the enjoyable part of my job now.

The positive was sarcasm, based on being told that my spin on "prejudice" was too negative.
I do not detect any prejudice in this thread. I see no reason to be offended and certainly no reason to come across as apologetic for "our prejudices" or that "we all pre-judged". There is absolutely no basis for that approach, here. That is just my friendly neighborhood opinion, from the beginning.

Okay, I have to ask: what is a no-see-um bug? Is it like a gnat or something?
I'm not an entomologist, but I believe no-see-ums can actually a variety of insects that bite without being visually detected (very small mosquitoes would qualify). I'm hoping someone will correct me if wrong.
Gnats can often be seen. But I don't believe they bite. They are generally annoying because they will swarm around your head, get in your eyes and attempt to enter your ears and nose. They can often not be seen but be heard when near the ears. It's most common to see them as a cloud since they tend to congregate.
Okay, I have to ask: what is a no-see-um bug? Is it like a gnat or something?
No see ums, also known as biting midges depending on where you’re from, are teeny tiny gnats that you can hardly see but you will most certainly feel its presence. These are the blood-sucking pests that will drive a sane person mad in a mere 10 minutes. Although a fraction of the size of a mosquito, their bite will often leave a greater itch that lasts a lot longer. And because they are hard to see, you usually do not know they are there until it is too late, hence the name “no see ums”. So what are these no see ums, exactly? No see ums are flying insects from the Ceratopogonidae family which include over 4,000 species. They are similar to gnats, only they leave their mark in the form of a bite. The males and females alike feed on nectar; however, the females are the only ones that feed on blood in order to draw proteins for their fertilized eggs. It is also believed, like mosquitoes, they are attracted to the CO2 emitted by humans.
Noseeums are found throughout the world but primarily in tropical and subtropical areas, as well as the Caribbean and particularly Florida. In fact, there are 37 different species alone just in Florida. They are a major nuisance to those that tend to spend a lot of time outdoors, particularly at dusk and dawn. Ask any fishermen, hunter, gardener or farmer about no see ums and you can be sure they have had more than their fair share of experiences with these annoying pests. They tend to congregate around moist, muddy and swampy environments, but don’t think that means you won’t find them elsewhere. Unless you plan on moving to the North Pole, they are nearly impossible to escape.
Noseeum bites are painful and inevitable, as much as we try to avoid them. So, what will happen if you do get bit and how should you treat it? No see um bites will likely leave a red, itchy bump on your skin that will have you wanting to give yourself a rub down with sandpaper.

Now... why were YOU in Cuba?
I almost "crash landed" there once on a trip back from Jamaica in 1985, and it was ironic because I was with my friend who was Cuban (born there but grew up in the U.S. after his family had left seeking asylum). The plane we were on had engine trouble (quite scary), but Cuba didn't allow us to land, so we touched down in Miami instead.

Apparently we call those bugs midge flies (http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/midge/). I actually have heard that name before (as well as gall flies), but they're not a problem here. It's so windy along the coast (where most towns and communities are) that I guess they can't stick around. Maybe they're more prominent somewhere in Central or on the Mainland, but not here.

That sounds absolutely terrifying. Luckily you were able to make it to Florida.
Members of my family, and my parents in particular go to the Caribbean Islands every year, and sometimes multiple times a year. Not always Cuba, but also to the Dominican Republic, or occasionally the Bahamas or Jamaica. They went to Aruba once, and were going to go to Bermuda, at which point I accused them of just trying to go to all of the places in the Kokomo Beach song. They admitted that that was actually my Uncle's goal, but since it's cheaper to go to Cuba or the Dominican Republic, they keep going back there.
A couple of years ago my parents decided that they should take me and my brother with them and have a family vacation. So we went to Cuba for 2 weeks.

I knew you were a female☺
This idea goes back to other sites. It's more than just a "getting to know you" idea...
Have you ever been surprised that a person you've been communicating with is not the gender you thought they were (or that their avatar projects)?
Do you communicate with males / females (or "other") differently? Would you perhaps be a little less harsh, less profane or more polite if you knew the gender of the person you're addressing (or disagreeing with) from the start?
You'd be surprised at some of the answers.
What's your gender? Care to share?
- I'm a man;
- I'm so bad at guessing gender and appearance online...
A few years ago, on Facebook, I met a Pakistanese guy, I befriended him - then he told me he was a woman...
I was disappointed: I wanted another male friend online. I already had many female friends online...
- I communicate the same way with any gender.

Exactly. I just treat people as individuals.
As for gender, I have no idea why it's important to know on the net. I get called a man by young teens all the time and I couldnt care less unless they TELL me that I'm not a woman. I find it hilarious and tell them I missed the memo. Or one went off his head because he thought I was a guy but my phrasing was 'feminine,

You're so sweet and naive, CR. You dont know about all the online scams? Billions of dollars each year blown by idiots (sorry, that's a bit harsh) either through fake online relationships or every day scams like one guy on a purebreed dog forum I was on set up a scam over a few years to gain trust and pretended his wife was dying of cancer. Long story cut short he 'adopted' a special needs child and desperately needed baby clothes. He was caught by a regular (personally known to me) flogging off BAGS of expensive baby clothes on ebay that had been donated to him by women on that forum, and that's just small fry. Trolls waiting to call out scammers to save these lonely elderly women their hard earned money? We got sick of the criticism and stopped warning people. The forum owner got sick of yet another ttempted police action against the scammers and brought in a new rule that anyone wanting to use offtopic, marketplace etc had to be a regular of x number of years or have x number of posts to sign in to certain sub forums. The person pretending to have ovarian cancer joined just before Steve Irwin died and said if anyone wanted to donate money for flowers he would accept the transfers and take the flowers to Australia Zoo because he lived close by.
This was around 2001.
OMG another one turned out to be a teacher at a well known christian school who was grooming young teens. His house was raided by a task force in that state and his computer confiscated. He lost his job, moved interstate, and last I heard was still working in a christian school and trying to become a catholic priest.

You have to be really careful. Soft hearted people get sucked in, and fleeders make a living out of doing just that.
I remember another one. A person wanting to become a public figure had a little friend in living in an impoverished village outside of Nairobi that she wanted to visit and ooh la la she had pid for her tickets and everything. People knew this woman and trusted her because Oh Look, she's a local member of parliament. She wanted to buy the poor lil guy a new laptop because his computer broke. Hey guess what, one lady suggested laptops for his whole class. The next suggested there were enough nice ladies to kit out the whole school. Enough money was collected for over a few hundred laptops and scammer must have been rubbing her hands together in glee. I smelt a mighty big rat here from the start because I've been to impoverished schools outside of Nairobi. They just arent that big. Kids at impoverished schools cant even afford a pair of socks let alone a computer.
A couple of months went by and she had well and truly returned with not a word about her visit so people started asking about little Ndwiga. Finally she posted a photo of him with his laptop in his bedroom.
It was a photo of a kid taking a selfie in a computer store surrounded with gadgets
she had wiped off google.
Oh man, I've got more of these.
The worst on an animal lovers' forum was people pretending to be vet staff setting up fake accounts over lengthy periods of time to get large vet bills paid. You know, we're not talking 50 bucks here and there but tens of thousands, with bank account details set up for fake vet clinics both in aus and in developing countries for wildlife charities. This left a very sour taste in animal lovers' mouths about the amazing staff that work so hard looking after our animals. Always know who you are giving money to, or atleast be prepared to kiss it goodbye first. Back then task forces would get involved but I dont know about now. There was another scammer raided and charges laid for selling quite large ticket items on that forum's marketplace and the items were never sent, you know, like antique saddles in mint condition, rare breed puppies sold for thousands of dollars (that also made the media). Wow, looking back that forum got hit a lot over a certain period and it wasnt the only forum getting 'done' at the time. There are professional thieves out there so just be careful.

People are nuts.

Insane, right? I watched a documentary on it years ago and it blew my mind. Surprised it has not been made into a movie.

It was. It's called Split!
I'm sure some of these people lose themselves in sock account personalities. There was a guy on imdb I became chatty with who admitted to have 100 but rumoured to have over 200.

Not seen Split yet. It's crazy how he kept in control for so long never slipping up and his endgoal is mindblowing. No doubt the other dudes gullibility played a major role though.
The second one i posted is really sad and revolting. Not quite as insane but still gets a what is wrong with these people?

Yeh that was sad.
There's a documentary called Catfish which got a spin off tv show. I havent seen either but heard they were intriguing. Far out. It would be interesting to hear what a shrink made of all this. Mr D's uncle is a Professor of Psychiatry. I've shown him stuff posted to me in the past and that was enough to curl his hair.
I wonder if all this instant gratification of current times makes people want to create personalities rather than just see them develop over time, but that doesnt explain 40 plus year old lonelies doing it, although they seem to have the emotional intelligence of 12 year olds who think they were born millennials.

I hate that doc tbh. It's fake, they made up a catfish story. Sensationalist crap IMO. There are fans of it though so maybe you'd like it.

Did they reveal that it's fake, or are you just thinking it is?

They didn't admit it no, but it definitely is.
You know what else is fake? Actual catfish.

ahh OK thanks for the headsup. I dont want to see anything fake. There's enough fake crap on the net just talking to fake personas. I'll save myself the time and pass. Docos I prefer to be atleast a bit factual.

When i told a fan it was fake i kind of devastated them. Felt pretty bad until they came back with some the whole point was that they were catfishing the audience by getting them to believe it nonsense :laugh:

That's what I thought your first link was going to do and why I asked if anyone had heard of it/seen it reported in the uk papers. I was convinced the author would come out and say he was catphishing.
For the record, there is no solid proof it's fake. Or real. I wouldn't be surprised either way really.

Oh no, that was a real courtcase the names just can't be revealed because they were underage. It was in the media and the officers and social workers who worked on the case are in the documentary talking about it. That site lists the sources at the bottom of the article.
Here's Vanity Fair and The Telegraph reporting on it:

Catfishing, wow I never heard of that term until just today. I mean I knew there were telemarketing scams....But why would people on the internet want to pretend to be something they're not anyway, besides the scam for money thing.
It makes no sense to me. I wonder how common this all is? Crazy stuff:eek: thanks guys for posting about this.

Because they are disturbed or living a very sad life which they want to escape.
In fact, I am catfishing you all right now. I am not that fat guy I have posted pics of. I am secretly a super hot babe.
Yeah it's usually lonely, mentally ill and/or socially awkward people. It's very sad.

Keyword: lonely. I think mental illness plays a part, but is not the main reason. Honestly think loneliness has more to do with it than anything. Just my opinion. Certainly there is more than one contributing factor.

Well yeah, mental illness is often a key factor in loneliness though. Obviously it depends on the circumstances, i think most i've read about have had some sort of mental illness involved but i'm obviously not a doctor.

As Swan and Cam said, they either dont have personalities or quite simply, defective personalities. And I think it's probably and sadly very common.
As for scammers, you've never heard of professional beggars before? How about Nigerian scammers? Nigerian scammers alone cost your own country over 1 billion dollars alone per annum. People have been known to fly over to Nigeria to make their first collection or uncover the scam and been almost bashed to death.

Of course. No doubt mental illness is a factor. I just think loneliness is so crippling because a lot of my friends and just people I know deal with mental illness, since that's my community. I've noticed those that have friends tend to be waaaaaay better off mentally than those who have few to no friends. The mixture of mental illness and loneliness is an awfully sad thing. Makes me want to cry thinking about it.

The most baffling thing is the frequency it still happens even after all the stories. People are very naive, or maybe just desperate which is pretty sad. There was another one a few years ago about some bigshot college football player, think he was mormon or some type of very devout christian can't remember. Anyway he kept mentioning his girlfriend in interviews and some journalist looked into it and found out she wasn't real. At first everyone thought he made her up but it turned out a teammates (male) cousin had created her and this dude thought he was engaged to her for months without ever meeting her. Insane.
Also the last one i posted i think was more outright malicious than anything. Someone set up a fake profile as Chris Andersen former Miami Heat player then set up a fake profile of a 15 year old except the catfisher said she was 19. The catfisher spoke to both of them and set up a date. Basically Andersen met the girl thinking she was 19 when she was underage. Apparently nothing happened but Andersen was branded a pedo before it all came out.

I know. Mind blowing! Maybe there are a lot more people like Citizen Rules who have just never heard of it, but there are plenty who think they won the willy wonka door prize s well.

When I was young, I thought the Village People were macho (I mean, they had a song about being such).
So I'd listen to their music while exercising. My older brother bought me a couple of their albums - probably because he thought it was funny that I didn't seem to get it.
Older brothers are the worst.

I am a manly man with a big bushy beard.
I've tried growing mustaches & beards, but never liked how they came in (too many spots where they wont connect). Mustaches always made my upper lip feel irritated or chapped and I found beards were almost as much work maintaining as regular shaving.
Although, now that I have a quadruple chin, a beard might be a consideration. Beards are to double chins, what the comb-over is to male pattern baldness. ;)
I'm still a guy, btw, but I wear my lower face like a woman = hair free!
