DISCLAIMER: This won't be as fast as some other song tournaments have been. I want to do this at a leisurely pace. Each set will probably be up for at least two days. I have school five days a week, so sometimes I won't feel like doing work for this thread. If you have a problem with waiting an extra day every now and then, you don't have to participate. However, it will be a pretty chill thread if I can help it.
We've done a country song tournament before, and I'd like to do another. If you want to play along, come right in. This won't be as uptight as some of the song tournaments have become. If you feel like you don't want to participate in this tournament at any point, that's fine too. If you feel like you want to jump in after we've already started, you can vote if you want. But if you want to nominate songs, well just let me know now. I guess a 64 song tournament is the way to go, unless you guys want to try a 128. Just sign up for noms and let me know.

If you want to start nominating now, I think it's safe to go ahead with 8 songs. I'll make sure the numbers work, because I know some people might not have 8 country songs they want to nominate. Those people can feel free to join too.
I'll edit my noms in here:
The Statler Brothers - Flowers on the Wall (m.youtube.com/watch?v=lr2SAPvKz-w)
Nikki Lane - Sleep With a Stranger (m.youtube.com/watch?v=TnQEiN6fGVI)
Whitey Morgan and the 78's - Waitin' Round to Die (m.youtube.com/watch?v=BMKsZIg5GPQ)
Colter Wall - The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie (m.youtube.com/watch?v=hQec64G2iXo)
Sturgill Simpson - Breakers Roar (m.youtube.com/watch?v=sg209CadVQM)
Cody Jinks - I'm Not the Devil (m.youtube.com/watch?v=8ocqBCvds1w)
Kacey Musgraves - Pageant Material (m.youtube.com/watch?v=2uN5Ge-ICDM)
Waylon Jennings - Honky Tonk Heroes (m.youtube.com/watch?v=z2QbDlvgHw8)
Waylon Jennings - Bob Wills is Still the King (m.youtube.com/watch?v=gLrJ250Gao8)

George Strait - 80 Proof Bottle of Tear Stopper (m.youtube.com/watch?v=S7bG-rjUa0s)
I will join, hoping I can find enough stuff that qualifies as I'm not too familiar with most country yet. If I can't come up with enough, definitely go ahead and spread 'em open slots around.

Not the most knowledgable about country but I've been starting to explore it more the last few days, hope these all count. I was considering some Death Grips but I think that's way too much country for most people.

I swear I'm not trying to be a pain in your neck, but can you format the links the same way the others have?
If you need help with it, you just need to get rid of the "www" and replace it with "m" and hyperlink it over the artist and song title.

It's alright
www.somesongonyoutube.com is the link we are working with and Some Song - On Youtube is the song. First erase everything in front of the first "." on the link. then put an "m" in front of the dot. Then copy the url. Then highlight "Some Song - On Youtube" in your post, then click on the button that looks like a globe sitting on a chain link. Then paste your url in the box that pops up.
[URL="m.somesongonyoutube.com"]Some Song - On Youtube

It will look like this, but with a closed bracket at the end.

Follow the instructions jiraffe posted just a few posts above. If you can't figure it out, then please point out which part of his instructions you're tripped up on. If you just say you're stuck, there's no way to know what the problem is, so he/we need specifics.

Okay, so including christine that's eleven people already interested in nominating songs. 11 x 11 is 121, so everybody who is already "signed up" can have 11 nominations right now. That leaves us with seven open spots, and I'll leave those spots open in case another person decides to nominate. They'll have the remaining seven spots, but if nobody shows up then I'll put our names in a randomizer and seven of us will get an extra nomination. So add your new noms when you're ready.

my 11. I'm not loads familiar with modern country music, but in the last country music tournament a few years back GBG said a few things that made me think. I know I love C&W music that my parents loved - Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, so I've tried branching out a bit and have mostly nominated songs I've researched for an experiment. I like all these so the research was fruitful so here you go!
Holly Williams - He's Making a Fool Out of You (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_GOwuncyANM)
Sugarland - Baby Girl (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Y75lVEv7Tqw)
Angaleena Presley - Pain Pills (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=skPjyRiR1MQ)
Merle Haggard - Mama Tried (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UKuc4nfJByc)
Sarah Jarosz - Fuel The Fire (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhw2FbyuUOg)
Kid Rock and Angaleena Presley - Care (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ccjjt5OihM) *
Buddy Miller - Does My Ring Burn Your Finger (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wF_HTkOp-VY)
Jason Isbell - Something More Than Free (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FhIL8H2P1Jk)
Ashley Monroe and Blake Shelton - You ain't Dolly (and You ain't Porter) (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L2kWS9GKk4o)
John Prine - Spanish Pipedream (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oPwq0YoOy4g)
Gillian Welch - The Devil Had a Hold of Me (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jhuFVzCfdxU)
*this seems like a bit of a rock/Country/rap mash up but if you don't think it fits here, just don't vote for it, it's all fine :)

I will only do one more nom, if that's okay. Give the other one to someone else. If I get to choose, I say give it to GB. This tourney was meant for her.

Swan: 2 nominations
cricket: 3 nominations
Destiny: 2 nominations

Ned Stark: 3 nominations
Topsy: 3 nominations
I doubt this will be an issue, but if any of y'all don't want any of those nomination spots, they'll go into the pot of leftover nominations we'll divvy up once we hear from y'all.

Destiny still has two nominations left that would give her 11, but after that we still have 11 nomination slots to fill. I'll be giving extra songs to both Captain Spaulding, christine and gbg, because I think of them when I think of both country music and MoFo. They'll get two extra noms. That leaves us with 5 spots left. So myself, Topsy, mojo, Ned, and Destiny will each get one more nom.
tl;dr version.
Destiny has 3 nominations left
Captain Spaulding now has 2 nominations left
gbg now has 2 nominations left
christine now has 2 nominations left
Topsy has 1 left
mojofilter has 1 left
Ned has 1 left
I have 1 left.
If cricket or Swan decide they want another nom after all, then I'll draw some straws to see who loses one of their extra 2 noms.
Maybe my nomination process has seemed convoluted as far as who gets how many nominations, but I've had it under control so don't worry about the numbers. I've kept up with them.

The only thing is that it's awful hard to vote against some of those Country music standards! On the other hand it's an intro into music you've not heard before which is always what you do to us. You might always think yours are being voted out, but you've still got people to listen to them which I think is the great thing about these tournaments.

Kewl, was gonna skip the next one as I'll be away for the best part of a week in September but this sounds nice and relaxed so it won't matter if I do end up going absent during it :)
I just want to say that I did receive those PMs, for those past few tournaments, and I just want to say that I'm sorry I didn't reply. I truly wasn't ignoring them. I was either away, going through that hellish pain I suffer with, or I was away, working on my home. It's an annoying cycle I keep going through, where I work as hard as possible, to get things done, and then I pay for it later, hurting like hell. I just don't give up. I'm extremely stubborn. Thank God!

There seems to be a lot of trouble with those. Is there a way to fix them? Say, saving them to our own computers, and changing the format? . . . or whatever the hell you call that.
OK, I'm working on this right now.

You might always think yours are being voted out, but you've still got people to listen to them which I think is the great thing about these tournaments.
I really don't mind when my songs are voted out early, but the last few tournaments, I've started to wonder how many people are just listening to the beginning of the songs, or just skimming through them. Some people are voting in a lot less time than it takes to actually listen to all of the songs, even in the first round when they should be new songs that they haven't heard before.
But I'll continue to nominate the songs I love. I just hope that there are more people like you who are actually listening to them and enjoying them than the people who are skipping over them.

I can nominate more songs that will make you cry if you'd like. Or we can have a whole tournament of "Songs That Will Make You Cry" someday. :bawling:
But I tried to keep most of my noms a little bit more upbeat for this tournament. :)
Best not do that, I'd be a wreck!

Okay, but I'll keep nominating some of them in these tournaments, so you can appreciate them in small doses.

A Question I saw some of Topsy songs and Shakira has a song with Blake Shelton and Blake is fine but isnt Shakira her hips dont lie technically a pop singer , but then again Jewel has done a song as well as Crow and Kid Rock who did Picture. I guess though Elvis is loved by country now and he was the king of rock and roll. Guess its just new age country.

It doesn't matter if Shakira is technically a pop singer, as long as the songs are country songs.

shakira isnt technically anything really as shes released songs in all genres-but in the us her mainstream hits have been pop with latinfolk music but from the start she was rock. Youre right to question it though! But the specific songs ive nominated with her here is one cover of a country song with blake shelton, and one original country song with him. ;)

She's right, because Lionel Richie was born in Alabama, and even though he was first with The Commodores, and then a huge Pop star, he considers himself Country. He used to write songs for Kenny Rogers (Lady), etc . . . and now he has taken several of his songs, and rerecorded them with a bunch of different Country singers. The Album is called Tuskegee. I've nominated one song from that album, although I do love a lot of them. The one I chose is most definitely my favorite. It's with Darius Rucker, who used to be the lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish, but is now a Country singer.
OK, I'm done rambling on about this. :)

You have an open nomination spot, so you can have both and we'll have our 128 songs now.
EDIT: Actually, we have 127. So either I have missed one or somebody hasn't used their last spot yet.

In that case, take out the Shania Twain song altogether and replace it with this:

1. Leroy Van Dyke - It's All Over Now Baby Blue vs Country Boy Can Survive. Hank Williams Jr
(Not crazy about Van Dyke's version of the Dylan classic, whereas I like the Hank Williams Jr. song quite a bit.)
2. Confederate Railroad-----Queen Of Memphis vs Mel McDaniel - Stand Up
(Confederate Railroad came across like a hillbilly version of the Village People in that music video. The only queens they'll be falling in love with are drag queens. "Stand Up" is decent enough to get my vote.)
3. Jamie Lynn Spears-When the lights go out vs The Statler Brothers - Flowers on the Wall
(Topsy's obsession with all things Britney Spears has reached a disturbing new level. I knew Britney had a sister who used to have a TV show on Nickelodeon, but I had no idea she was trying to be a country singer nowadays. Being a live version of the song doesn't do it any favors. "Flowers on the Wall" is an enjoyable little ditty.)
4. Lionel Richie & Little Big Town - Deep River Woman vs Angaleena Presley - Pain Pills
("Deep River Woman" is pleasant enough to make for decent background music, but it doesn't really register much of an impact beyond that. I like the "Pain Pills" song a lot. Edgy, relevant, delivering a message of condemnation with a bite and a twang. Great nomination.)
5. Billy Joe Shaver ft. Willie Nelson - Hard To Be an Outlaw vs Buddy Miller - Does My Ring Burn Your Finger
(Love the bluegrass element of "Does My Ring Burn Your Finger," but it's matched up against my own nomination. Willie's the G.O.A.T. in my opinion, and Billy Joe Shaver is a legendary bad ass (he shot a dude in the face just a few years ago, reminding everyone that you don't f*ck with Billy Joe Shaver). These are two true outlaws, more authentic than anything coming out of Nashville nowadays. Their weathered voices go together like whiskey and cigarettes.)
6. George Strait and Alan Jackson - Murder on Music Row vs Nikki Lane - Sleep With a Stranger
(This was an exceptionally tough decision. I had to listen to both songs multiple times before I made up my mind which one to vote for. I wasn't listening to country when George Strait and Alan Jackson did this song together, but it feels more relevant than ever given the dearth of talent on modern country radio. What seemed like murder back then is straight up genocide nowadays. I decided to vote for "Sleep With a Stranger," though, since it's the song I can see myself revisiting more often. Plus I'm excited to discover a new up-and-coming country artist that doesn't appear to play it safe for fear of upsetting mainstream country audiences, at least not lyrically.)
7. Toby Keith---Beer For My Horses vs Meryl Haggard and Willie Nelson---Pancho and Lefty
(I used to hate Toby Keith, viewing him as an outlaw poser/wannabe, but he doesn't seem that bad anymore compared to modern country artists like Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan. "Beer For My Horses" is an enjoyable song, but it doesn't stand a chance against one of my favorite country songs of all-time. I hate how Merle is spelled "Meryl," though ... unless NedStark knows something I don't and Merle's death earlier this year was just a publicity stunt so he could pull a Caitlyn Jenner and resurrect himself as the cowgirl he always was deep down inside.)
8. Ernest Tubb - Walking the Floor Over You vs Cody Jinks - Hippies and Cowboys
(Cody Jinks is a recent discovery. I've been listening to some of his stuff these last few days. It's fitting that he name drops Merle in this song since his voice is fairly similar to the country icon. You gotta dig a little deeper nowadays to find country artists that feel authentic. From what I've heard of him so far, Jinks seems like the real deal. Even though it's my nomination, though, I was strongly tempted to vote the other way. It won't bother me none if Tubb advances.)
First set
1. Leroy Van Dyke - It's All Over Now Baby Blue vs Country Boy Can Survive. Hank Williams Jr
Great example of me not knowing what country is because i wouldnt have thought the 1st one was country lol. Like both, not completely sold on the singing by the second one though until he gives it some power midways.
2. Confederate Railroad-----Queen Of Memphis vs Mel McDaniel - Stand Up
the video of the first one though
3. Jamie Lynn Spears-When the lights go out vs The Statler Brothers - Flowers on the Wall'
I never really paid any attention to Jamie Lynn because i was busy stalking her sister, however she sold me with another song i nominated and i started listening to her. im okay with losing to the song though, very fun.
4. Lionel Richie & Little Big Town - Deep River Woman vs Angaleena Presley - Pain Pills
i like both. I wish the singer in the second one would bring some oumph to it,shes a bit too chilled and laidback cos the song is really great.
5. Billy Joe Shaver ft. Willie Nelson - Hard To Be an Outlaw vs Buddy Miller - Does My Ring Burn Your Finger
6. George Strait and Alan Jackson - Murder on Music Row vs Nikki Lane - Sleep With a Stranger
Kinda have the same problem with this as with pain pills-i need her to bring some more power to her voice.
7. Toby Keith---Beer For My Horses vs Meryl Haggard and Willie Nelson---Pancho and Lefty
really like the second one!
8. Ernest Tubb - Walking the Floor Over You vs Cody Jinks - Hippies and Cowboys
aaargghh...cant really decided....

1. Leroy Van Dyke - It's All Over Now Baby Blue vs Country Boy Can Survive. Hank Williams Jr no, that first song is so WRONG! I had to go and listen to the original so I could get that chugging beat out of me head. Chyp...tsk tsk that was torture! :D .
2. Confederate Railroad-----Queen Of Memphis vs Mel McDaniel - Stand Up Liked both of these. Mel just edged it
3. Jamie Lynn Spears-When the lights go out vs The Statler Brothers - Flowers on the Wall - Liked both, but I thought Jamie Lynn gave a heartfelt little performance there, so voting for her
4. Lionel Richie & Little Big Town - Deep River Woman vs Angaleena Presley - Pain Pills - Angaleena is my discovery of tootling around listening to unknown stuff. I really like her voice and the song is different, more contemporary. We don't really hear much country music in the UK, but we def should hear more like this. Deep River Woman was nice but didn't get me.
5. Billy Joe Shaver ft. Willie Nelson - Hard To Be an Outlaw vs Buddy Miller Does My Ring Burn Your Finger - Love Hard to be an Outlaw, but I really like the lyrics of the second and like the harmonies and banjo too.
6. George Strait and Alan Jackson - Murder on Music Row vs Nikki Lane - Sleep With a Stranger - hard to choose between two so different songs. The former could be about the latter! I'm voting for Murder cos the lyrics are great
7. Toby Keith---Beer For My Horses vs Meryl Haggard and Willie Nelson---Pancho and Lefty some singers just can't be ignored and put two of them together and it's just legend.
8. Ernest Tubb - Walking the Floor Over You vs Cody Jinks - Hippies and Cowboys Walking the Floor over You is such a classic but I'm giving my vote to Hippies and Cowboys. Great laconic lyrics I love the line "I’ve been standing on the outside for all of my life But I like the view, I’m not gonna lie" and like his voice too. Again more contemporary. I think I'm getting into this new country!

Please bare in mind that Merle is spelled many was its just on how your say it. I am spelling Meryl as is the y is silent version. While it is how Streeps first name is spelled but Meryl is the double meaning too the word. Least it how i view it but am likely wrong. Sad thing is I have a jug with Merle Haggard on it and i still spelled his name wrong. At the time i just spelled it on the fly which with me could bit hit or miss.
time fer some gold ol' country music!!!!!
1. Leroy Van Dyke - It's All Over Now Baby Blue vs Country Boy Can Survive. Hank Williams Jr
(Both are good but - and maybe this is a really stupid, lame critique - but the Hank Williams Jr. song feels weird in that it's supposed to be super gritty and badass but is also very polished. I feel if it was a bit more organic, maybe even lo-fi, it would have gotten my vote, because the songwriting is very good. Again, maybe that's a stupid critique, I don't know.)
2. Confederate Railroad-----Queen Of Memphis vs Mel McDaniel - Stand Up
3. Jamie Lynn Spears-When the lights go out vs The Statler Brothers - Flowers on the Wall
(Dammit, Topsy.)
4. Lionel Richie & Little Big Town - Deep River Woman vs Angaleena Presley - Pain Pills
(Unlike Cap I liked both of these a lot, but even then, it's still no contest for me.)
5. Billy Joe Shaver ft. Willie Nelson - Hard To Be an Outlaw vs Buddy Miller - Does My Ring Burn Your Finger
I WANT TO VOTE FOR BOTH.
6. George Strait and Alan Jackson - Murder on Music Row vs Nikki Lane - Sleep With a Stranger
(Nikki Lane is far more my style musically. I know that might be blasphemy for country fans, I know George Strait is a huge country artist, and he's fine, can see myself even appreciating him more in time. But where he might be an acquired taste for me, Nikki Lane is instant love. Need to seek out more of her stuff.
7. Toby Keith---Beer For My Horses vs Meryl Haggard and Willie Nelson---Pancho and Lefty
8. Ernest Tubb - Walking the Floor Over You vs Cody Jinks - Hippies and Cowboys

Yee-haw boyo! (he's actually Welsh, I've no idea why ) ... let's get this shoe on the road as they say ....
First set
Leroy Van Dyke - It's All Over Now Baby Blue vs Country Boy Can Survive. Hank Williams Jr
No brainer for me - that first one is a complete abomination even if it is actually quite decent, whoever nominated it should be truly and utterly ashamed ... or shot ... or both.
Confederate Railroad-----Queen Of Memphis vs Mel McDaniel - Stand Up
Far too many dashes in that first one for my taste - whoever nominated that second one should be truly and utterly ashamed though.
Jamie Lynn Spears-When the lights go out vs The Statler Brothers - Flowers on the Wall
The good news - at least one of the siblings can actually sing. The bad news - I'm still not entirely sure which one, it's live and I prefer the other anyway.
Lionel Richie & Little Big Town - Deep River Woman vs Angaleena Presley - Pain Pills
Enjoyed both but preference is for the latter - sorry I can't think of anything amusing (to me anyway) to say for this match.
Billy Joe Shaver ft. Willie Nelson - Hard To Be an Outlaw vs Buddy Miller - Does My Ring Burn Your Finger
Love them both - tough decision that partly came down to being tired of always dressing to the right today and partly because I can imagine only a complete lunatic would nominate Buddy and my pa always taught me to be wary of upsetting lunatics but since when have I ever taken any notice of that?
George Strait and Alan Jackson - Murder on Music Row vs Nikki Lane - Sleep With a Stranger
I could easily have voted either way here tbh and maybe guilt over not pulling the trigger on one of Ms. Lane's albums recently is subconsciously pushing me that way?
Toby Keith---Beer For My Horses vs Meryl Haggard and Willie Nelson---Pancho and Lefty
In what has commonly come to be known as 'the MoFo battle of the Willies' there's sadly really only one way I could ever honestly vote in this match.
Ernest Tubb - Walking the Floor Over You vs Cody Jinks - Hippies and Cowboys
I feel bad voting this way because I dare say Cody can just go out and buy a new guitar whenever he wants unlike poor Ernest in the old days where he obviously had to take all measures necessary to keep ownership of the one he had ..... but I'm voting on the music that makes my ear smile more not on perceptions of hardship and this one just makes my ear grin that little bit wider.

The story of that shooting gets even more interesting the more you read about it. I assume you know the story, Cap, so this more for everybody else. Apparently the guy he shot was a bully and threatened Shaver with a knife. Before the shot was fired, a witness said he heard Shaver ask the guy "Where do you want it?" and the shot went off. Afterwards, Shaver was heard saying "Tell me you are sorry." In an interview with NPR a few years later, he said he shot the guy because he was "such a bully" and said he hit the guy between a "mother and a f*cker." Prosecutors argued that Shaver could have left in his pick-up truck, Shaver countered with "I'm from Texas, if I was a chicken sh*t, I would have left." And finally after the trial, Shaver said outside the courtroom "I am very sorry about the incident. Hopefully things will work out where we become friends enough so that he gives me back my bullet."

1. Leroy Van Dyke - It's All Over Now Baby Blue vs Country Boy Can Survive. Hank Williams Jr
I enjoy a lot of outlaw country, but I've never been real high on Junior. He has the unenviable task of trying to live up to his daddy. I've heard Country Boy Can Survive so many times in my life that I am sick of it. I don't know how many of you guys actually live in the south, but there is nothing more annoying than a fake "country boy" singing this song because he thinks it's cool. The other song is not that great of a cover, but at least it's not a song that I am tired of.
2. Confederate Railroad-----Queen Of Memphis vs Mel McDaniel - Stand Up
wtf did I just see?
3. Jamie Lynn Spears-When the lights go out vs The Statler Brothers - Flowers on the Wall
Pretty easy decision for me. Sorry, Zoey.
4. Lionel Richie & Little Big Town - Deep River Woman vs Angaleena Presley - Pain Pills
Listening to Little Big Town makes me want to take too many pain pills. :D I've never heard of Angaleena Presley before, but I enjoyed this song.
5. Billy Joe Shaver ft. Willie Nelson - Hard To Be an Outlaw vs Buddy Miller - Does My Ring Burn Your Finger
I pretty nearly nominated a Billy Joe Shaver song, but I settled for a Waylon song that Billy Joe wrote. This song is as cool as you'd expect, and relevant, oh so relevant. It's too bad these outlaws aren't wanted (in Nashville) anymore. I'd vote for the other song if it had a better match-up.
6. George Strait and Alan Jackson - Murder on Music Row vs Nikki Lane - Sleep With a Stranger
I was never into Alan Jackson that much, but this song is very, very relevant to today's Nashville. The other one is my nom, and it's a ballsy country song.
7. Toby Keith---Beer For My Horses vs Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson---Pancho and Lefty
Toby Keith, to me, seems like the proto-bro-country singer. Not even Willie Nelson could save him, especially when he's against Merle. Dirty Willie is playing both sides of this match though.
8. Ernest Tubb - Walking the Floor Over You vs Cody Jinks - Hippies and Cowboys
Either way, both songs are winners to me. I'm happy that one of these go to the next round, so I'll vote for my own. A true country classic.

Modern country music doesn't suck if you turn off your radio and start browsing the internet. I'll post some of my findings in this thread whenever I feel the urge.
For those of you who feel like no country artists show any love or influence of Hank Sr. in their music:
Here is Luke Bell, not to be confused with Luke Bryan.

Hold Up just a minute there did you just say Hank Williams Jr is a Fake Country Boy. Despite the fact his dad was the king of country and Jr may have started out spoiled and rich but any singer today will tell you hank williams jr is all country. But that may just be mu own opinion.

I probably didn't express correctly how I feel. I don't mean that Jr. is the faker, but I've seen countless "country" bros annoyingly singing their own rendition of that song. Or putting it on the jukebox at a cheap bowling alley when I just want to play pool or the ancient Die Hard arcade cabinet.

And if you turn on the country station and hear a tune that makes you say "I'll listen to anything but country" it's because Hank didn't do it that way. Country music has had that problem for a while now. Just ask Waylon:

I was having a heck of a time trying to balance old and new, and you can see by my nominations that half are from this decade and the other half are all from the 80s or before. I thought about having a "new country" tournament, but I was worried about how bad it would be. A "classic country" tournament would be fun at some point, but it's a bit disheartening that we didn't garner all that much interest. Just a handful of brave souls willing to expand their taste or show off their unheralded diamonds in the rough.

This is what happen when a bunch of non-country music fans vote in a country music tournament. This song wins over a song about the death of "real" country music sung by two of country music's living legends. :(
What keeps Nikki Lane from being "real" country?
Also, I reckon we are all fans of country or else we wouldn't have joined the tourney. Just some like myself are not familiar with a lot of it. But I still consider myself a fan.

There's almost a borderline pop sound to her song, but it's not specifically her. There's a special sound to older country music that just doesn't exist anymore. It disappeared somewhere around the mid '80's - early '90's, and country music just hasn't been the same since. :(
She's described, everywhere I can find, as country.
Alas. It's worth voting against that George Strait song just for this line:
"Slowly killed tradition and for that someone should hang"
Come on now...
Tradition is meant to be stabbed with a fork or else nothing new and interesting would be created.
I say that half-jokingly. A lot of good traditional stuff.

That's quite ironic. However there's nothing wrong with pure genres of music opening out and taking influences from elsewhere, it's ever been the way. There's still old school country music bring played by younger people to keep that heritage going isn't there?

If you mean are there "cover versions" of the old country classics being recorded and/or performed by the new generation of country artists, then yes, there are, but like remakes of the old classic movies, they're usually not as good as the originals.
But that's just my opinion. I prefer the older country music, but there are many people who prefer the newer country music. (I don't call the newer country music "garbage" or "trash" or some of the other nasty comments that I've read on YouTube and some of the country music sites. It's not bad music. It's just not my type of country music. )

I haven't listened to the Kid Rock song yet, but I promise that I will when we get to it. I don't really know who he is, but I've seen pictures of him and I've heard his name mentioned around country music, but my guess is that he's more like country-rock or outlaw country than pure country. (If I remember correctly, he looks like a heavy metal guy.)
With a few exceptions, I don't love the current mainstream country. My country music tastes run from the oldies to around the early '90's. That's around the time that country music really started changing to the more modern stuff that borders on rock.

It's just not my type of country music. ).
GBG - I didn't mean 'cover' versions of the old classics, I meant younger groups that are composing and performing songs that tip their hat to traditional country, that revere the greats but aren't afraid of using themes that are more relevant today. I mean songs like Old Crow Medicine Show's Tennessee Pusher (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=C4Bp-68W-2c) perhaps. I do find that they're not as bland maybe as younger people who just carry on singing songs that totally fit in with the old vibe but who just ain't Dolly and ain't Porter ;)
Of course people like what they like and there's nothing wrong with that, and I love you for the fact that you do love your music so much, but also you're always prepared to listen to other music in tournaments and have decent critiques of it too :) I really got stuck in my music ways a few years back but now t'internet has been brilliant at scoping around and making new music discoveries. Spotify and youtube are great, as is BBC radio specially radio 6.
It's right that we should appreciate old music, if someone doesn't then they're the ones missing out, but then again we have to appreciate that the old themes of human suffering like in the dustbowl days will now be a different kind of social depravation. Of course tho, the old themes of love and loss will be eternal - you just have to listen to Hank singing to hear that!

This is what happen when a bunch of non-country music fans vote in a country music tournament. This song wins over a song about the death of "real" country music sung by two of country music's living legends. :(
It's hard for me to take this seriously when you nominated Blake Shelton who called classic country fans "old farts" and "jackasses" and said that nobody wants to hear that anymore.
If I am “Male Vocalist of the Year” that must mean that I’m one of those people now that gets to decide if it moves forward and if it moves on. Country music has to evolve in order to survive. Nobody wants to listen to their grandpa’s music. And I don’t care how many of these old farts around Nashville going, “My God, that ain’t country!” Well that’s because you don’t buy records anymore, jackass. The kids do, and they don’t want to buy the music you were buying.
Not to mention, Nikki Lane has a whole lot more "outlaw" in her than Blake Shelton. She's not specifically a traditionalist, but she's holding true to country music by making music her way without being forced into doing things the way they make you do them on Music Row. And no, the way they make you do them on Music Row isn't what George, Alan, Waylon, Hank, Willie, Lefty, or any of those other fellers would want you to do. Besides, it's hard not to see some Loretta in Nikki Lane. Those girls both have balls the size of Texas. Loretta for singing songs like "The Pill" and Nikki Lane for "Sleep With a Stranger".
And here is a quote from Miss Lane herself about country music today:
Country, it’s presented as real people singing real songs to real people. It’s not. There’s literally like 30 people behind every decision that’s made in that entire industry. The thing I love about this alt country, or Americana, whatever this world is that me and all my buddies have gotten lumped into, it’s a bunch of characters writing songs. Just as Gary Briggs from New West says, we’re ‘living’ our songs. We wrote them about real **** that happened to us. No hypotheticals.
I don't know, but that sounds more "real" to me than Blake Shelton covering Michael Buble songs.
"For the steel guitars no longer cry" except for in Nikki Lane songs because she has a steel guitar player. She preserves tradition while trying to push forward by incorporating her influences in a way that makes something new and exciting. She writes her own songs about things that are pretty clearly about her life or situations that affect her life. That's very country.

1. Faith Hill~There You'll Be vs Drive-By Truckers - Tornadoes - not mad on big ballad songs. Tornadoes sounds more Springsteeny which is more my taste. I like the guys voice too
2. Kenny Chesney - The Good Stuff vs Johnny Lee-Looking for Love - hanky needed for the tears on this one. You got me Chyp :bawling: . Looking for Love is good too
3. Dwight Yoakam-Suspicious minds vs Gillian Welch - The Devil Had a Hold of Me - not keen on this version of Suspicious Minds. I don't like the background with the constant twangy guitar, besides which I love Gillian Welch. She has this great laidback voice with that emotional break to it. She could've been an old member of the Carter Family the way she sings. Love the bluegrass banjo too.
4. Mountain Heart - Here I Am vs The Oak Ridge Boys-Elvira - really like Here I Am. I like the spare portentous quality of it with that fine fiddle
5. Tom Jones-Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow vs Shakira ft Blake Shelton-need you now - I'm not mad on Say You'll Stay. I know Tom is a massive Country fan tho, so in a long career he was bound to be singing some, but he still gets my vote. The other song was surprisingly weak considering I think they're performing on The Voice (?) they're supposed to be better than the contestants....sorry Topsy I know you love her x
6. Ernest Tubb - Thanks A Lot vs John Prine - Spanish Pipedream Love the Tubb song, but I have a lot of time for John Prine. He writes great lyrics and is probably quite under rated.
7. Holly Williams - He's Making a Fool Out of You vs Billy Swan-I Can Help - I'm a little bit in love with Holly Williams. I have all her music and I swear there's not a dud song on any of her albums. Her grandpappy would be so proud of her
8. Wynonna Judd~She is His Only Need vs LeAnn Rimes~Swingin' - I like the tone in Wynonna Judd's voice

1. Faith Hill~There You'll Be vs Drive-By Truckers - Tornadoes-I thought I liked Faith Hill, but it must have been just for her looks.
2. Kenny Chesney - The Good Stuff vs Johnny Lee-Looking for Love
3. Dwight Yoakam-Suspicious minds vs Gillian Welch - The Devil Had a Hold of Me-Only The Blues Brothers are allowed to copy The King.
4. Mountain Heart - Here I Am vs The Oak Ridge Boys-Elvira-My favorite song of the tournament.
5. Tom Jones-Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow vs Shakira ft Blake Shelton-need you now-I used to hate that song when I was little, but I became a Jones fan as soon as I found out that women throw their underwear at him during concerts.
6. Ernest Tubb - Thanks A Lot vs John Prine - Spanish Pipedream
7. Holly Williams - He's Making a Fool Out of You vs Billy Swan-I Can Help

Ned , you've missed voting on pairings 7 and 8
Yes that i am aware. Dont like any of the four song so skipped with a no comment on either
1. Faith Hill~There You'll Be vs Drive-By Truckers - Tornadoes
i was thinking of nominating this myself, but wasnt sure if it was considered country. Love Faith Hill- I actually really like the second aswell,i just wish he would relax his voice a bit.
2. Kenny Chesney - The Good Stuff vs Johnny Lee-Looking for Love
Is the first one the one who was married to Renee Zellweger for about 5 minutes? Never really heard him sing, sounds great but theres something sweet about the second one.
3. Dwight Yoakam-Suspicious minds vs Gillian Welch - The Devil Had a Hold of Me
wow the second one sounds like a mash between different songs of one of my fave bands,katzenjammer..now i see where they`ve gotten their inspiration.
4. Mountain Heart - Here I Am vs The Oak Ridge Boys-Elvira
fun! Also Elvira is my favourite name
5. Tom Jones-Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow vs Shakira ft Blake Shelton-need you now
Alternate links: Tom Jones-Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow
Shakira ft Blake Shelton-need you now
obviously,my nom
6. Ernest Tubb - Thanks A Lot vs John Prine - Spanish Pipedream
second one was okay too
7. Holly Williams - He's Making a Fool Out of You vs Billy Swan-I Can Help
i really like both. i think the second one is used in a commercial because i remember it. but the first one is beautiful
8. Wynonna Judd~She is His Only Need vs LeAnn Rimes~Swingin'

Drive-By Truckers are great.
2. Kenny Chesney - The Good Stuff vs Johnny Lee-Looking for Love
Do not like Kenny Chesney.
3. Dwight Yoakam-Suspicious minds vs Gillian Welch - The Devil Had a Hold of Me
Both of these artists are great. Dwight Yoakam made a really cool brand of country music that wasn't like much other country music at the time, mixing his Bakersfield Sound style with elements of old school rock n roll. However, this cover isn't his best work. Gillian Welch makes some haunting Appalachian bluegrass.
4. Mountain Heart - Here I Am vs The Oak Ridge Boys-Elvira
Elvira is a fun song. I don't know that it's actually a better song, but I'll give it a vote because it's been awhile since I've heard it and I am having fun.
5. Tom Jones-Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow vs Shakira ft Blake Shelton-need you now
:nope:
6. Ernest Tubb - Thanks A Lot vs John Prine - Spanish Pipedream
Best set in the group. Not an easy choice. Ernest Tubb is a legend, John Prine should be.
7. Holly Williams - He's Making a Fool Out of You vs Billy Swan-I Can Help
I'm feeling the more fun songs today. I'm kinda borderline on both of these songs right now, but I had fun with the Billy Swan song. It'd be an easier choice if his name was Billy jiraffejustin.
8. Wynonna Judd~She is His Only Need vs LeAnn Rimes~Swingin'
I'd rather be listening to the John Anderson version of Swingin'.

Yes, I'm sure that there will always be artists who are "throwbacks" to classic country music, but sadly they are few and far between. Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately :skeptical: ), I don't get to hear everything that comes out in country music nowadays because we haven't had a country music radio station in this area for several years, so I have to find the new stuff on the internet through country music websites and music sites like YouTube. (Plus, it doesn't help that I listen to my mp3 player more often than internet radio.) But the nice thing about that is that several of the newer country artists who were nominated in this tournament are new to me, so hopefully I'll find some new favorites along the way. :)
One of the things that I love about these tournaments is that not only do I get to hear songs and artists that I've never heard before, but when I find a song or an artist that I like, YouTube usually has similar songs along the right column, so I can listen to additional songs too. (That's why it usually takes me well over an hour or two to vote in these tournaments. I have a tendency to go "exploring". :))

Yeah, Blake Shelton has a great voice, but he has a terrible habit of putting his foot in his mouth whenever he opens it, (and he's not singing).
Not to mention, Nikki Lane has a whole lot more "outlaw" in her than Blake Shelton. She's not specifically a traditionalist, but she's holding true to country music by making music her way without being forced into doing things the way they make you do them on Music Row. My comment wasn't specifically against Nikki Lane. I actually liked that song, but it was up against one of my noms, (and one of my favorite songs), so it didn't stand much of a chance to get my vote.
I didn't expect the George Strait and Alan Jackson song to win the tournament, (or even get very far into it), but I expected it to be knocked out by someone much bigger, like Merle Haggard, Hank Sr. etc.

1. Faith Hill - There You'll Be vs Drive-By Truckers - Tornadoes
(Not a fan of Faith Hill or sappy ballads. I keep meaning to explore more stuff by Drive-By Truckers. I like everything I've heard from them so far, as well as some of Jason Isbell's solo stuff.)
2. Kenny Chesney - The Good Stuff vs Johnny Lee - Looking for Love
(Not over the moon for either song, but "Looking For Love" still wins my vote fairly easily.)
3. Dwight Yoakam - Suspicious minds vs Gillian Welch - The Devil Had a Hold of Me
(I think Dwight Yoakam is one of most talented country artists of his era and he has his own trademark sound, but this is the type of cover that just makes me long for the original. Gillian Welch is another artist I keep meaning to explore more deeply.)
4. Mountain Heart - Here I Am vs The Oak Ridge Boys-Elvira

5. Tom Jones - Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow vs Shakira ft Blake Shelton - Need You Now
(Tom Jones's vocal warbling gets on my nerves, but the other song was dreadful. Take Blake Shelton out of the equation and just let Shakira shake her hips for a few minutes and I might've voted for it.)
6. Ernest Tubb - Thanks A Lot vs John Prine - Spanish Pipedream
(I like both of these a lot, but I'll give my vote to Tubb since I had to vote against him in the previous set.)
7. Holly Williams - He's Making a Fool Out of You vs Billy Swan-I Can Help
(First time hearing Holly Williams. She has a lovely voice. A lot of talent in that gene pool. However, I enjoyed "I Can Help" a little more due to its tempo and liveliness.)
8. Wynonna Judd - She is His Only Need vs LeAnn Rimes - Swingin'
(Indifferent to both. Judd has a nice voice, and I like songs that tell a story, but this set has been very ballad heavy. As for the other song, it sounded like LeAnn Rimes was on the verge of losing control at any moment, like she was struggling to keep up with the tempo.)
