The first picture was right after I put him down for the first time. He's actually got quite a bit of verve, but he's not very good at staying right-side up.

Not sure what species that is but appears to me those are downy feathers on and around the head.

If this is the case, you'll need live insects and worms.

Best off finding out what it is first.

How exactly are you breaking the law by the way? You never explained that. Is it illegal to take wild birds indoors or something? Were you supposed to call animal control instead?

Last week I discovered a dead bird on our lawn, but before my room mates and I could come to a conclusion about what to do with it (we didn't want to touch it due to diseases, and we didn't know if we should just call the landlord or look up the number to the municipal animal control centre or something) it disappeared. It's likely that a neighbourhood cat or dog took it.

For the next day or two we heard a lot of distressed baby bird sounds around the house. :( Hopefully your little guy is able to make a full recovery.

Omni it might have fallen out of its nest, it looks like a wren. Youre gonna have to go against your humane nature and get it some worms, insects, and such. That is what they eat, what their mothers feed them.

The other day my dog Ike was barking at something at the side of the yard. I couldn't see what it was, but then I saw a bird sort of half-fly, half-run into the grass. Ike was naturally excited, but didn't attack it; he just danced around it, barked at it, etc. It clearly couldn't fly.

I went inside for awhile and came back out an hour later to see if it'd recovered: couldn't find it. Went around with a flashlight, didn't see it. Was relieved: must've flown away. Then I turn around to head back to the house and, like a horror movie, it's standing there in front of the door looking at me. Didn't run when I got close, just sitting looking very pensive.

Went back inside for a bit, came back out...and was actually gone this time.

From what I've read, it's quite common for birds to smack into something and get a concussion, and then just shake it off after awhile. Not that that necessarily applies or helps here.

Supposedly "federal, state and provincial legislation makes it illegal for unlicensed individuals to care for virtually any native bird species", which is one of many dumb laws I'm content to break.

Last week I discovered a dead bird on our lawn, but before my room mates and I could come to a conclusion about what to do with it (we didn't want to touch it due to diseases, and we didn't know if we should just call the landlord or look up the number to the municipal animal control centre or something) it disappeared. I picked up a bat this week too. They can't easily get off the ground on their own and it would've been run over where it was.

For the next day or two we heard a lot of distressed baby bird sounds around the house. :( Hopefully your little guy is able to make a full recovery.
I'm not entirely convinced that's possible, he's very lop-sided. The best I can hope for is making the most of what life he may have left.

He's been trying to climb out of the box the last few minutes and when he topples over onto his back he can't get up without help.

No, it was definitely dead. It was on it's back with it's legs straight up in the air with some flies picking at it. Maybe some maggots or worms? I sort of blocked the image out of my mind. I thought it might just be a carcass at first sight, but the bird was actually intact.

I have no idea how long it was there before I spotted it, because it was along the side of our house not visible from the street on a narrow yard we don't ever walk on. I only saw it because I had to go into the currently uninhabited apartment in the basement to empty a dehumidifier. The landlord wanted it running because there was a lot of water damage in that room (the bottom of our water boiler completely gave out last month and spilled a lot of water). I happened to look out the half curtained window there, and that's where I saw the bird.

It was there at least an hour or so after I spotted it. It wasn't a baby, since it was fairly large. It was probably the mother to the ones we heard crying later, which was very saddening.

Maybe a tiny bottle (similar to Visine) of water and have it dripping an inch above his beak. This way it doesn't get on his feathers (flu fear). I always noticed birds eating worms that way. I'm thinking you can make one with a shampoo bottle after it's cleaned out really good, poke a hole, and try that.

I read about eyedroppers, but I haven't got anything that could be reliably used like that. I might have to buy one.

The ladies at the store warned against feeding the bird that way unless it was very young, but they said it might be a juvie so I'm not sure.

Wish I could offer some advice - in my family we grew up with birds, mostly parakeets, but we also had a canary and a cockatiel.
I remember doing the eyedropper water feeding & giving medicine to one parakeet when he became too old & sick.

For some reason we used to cover their cages at night with a cloth or a sheet... maybe it made them feel more secure rather than having (what was to them) a sea of endless darkness beyond the tiny bars of their cage?

The sheet over top the box was an excellent idea. Only other thing I could recommend is keep him in a quiet, non-air-conditioned room. Birds do best in natural ambient temperatures. Darkness may keep him calmer, but probably best to mimic light and dark of the daily cycle.

TONGO

I don't trust hanging it more than an inch above the ground, but I have adjusted the larger twig to be a perch.

I've noticed by this point that it doesn't seem to be a straightforward chest wound as I initially thought, but the joints at the base of it's tail and right wing are raw pink and it seems to move with no regard for them, often sitting on it's tail or outright grabbing it's own feathers with it's talons when it falls down (which keeps happening). I worry that repeatedly reaching in to roll it over may put more stress on the joints than necessary. They may heal better if he's not moving, so I'm torn between righting it so it can eat and drink, or leaving it so it can heal. Even then I'm not sure it can heal.

It was out of my hands. His insistence on escaping kept landing him on his back and I couldn't keep rolling him over every two minutes, especially while I have to sleep and handling him risks exacerbating his injuries. On his back, in pain, and covered in his own mess for several hours, the suffering took it's toll and he died of stress, as he likely would have sooner on the side of the bike trail I found him on.

Had he not brought it upon himself and remained perched he might have healed, but as it was, only indefinite attendance might've saved him and I'm afraid that's not something I was able to provide, nor do I believe a wildlife rehab center would've realistically been able to provide, the nearest of which would've required long rough travel and ran the risk of compulsory release and subsequent euthanasia, which I would not abide.

It really is too bad.

He had a far better end with you than he did outside. Sometimes that is the best a person can do.

RIP nameless wild bird Omni found.

It feels like you should get something to make use of that little room you built though.

This was a very interesting thread to look through. I was getting all excited here in the middle of the night at 02:30 AM.

...And then the little bastard died on us. God dammit. Can't sleep now that's for sure.

Dang that really sucks what happened to the bird. But the effort you put in to care for it was admirable, it would have probably died hours after you found it if you would've just left it there. You gave it a fighting chance.
