OK, there aren't going to be a lot of boundaries here...classic TV, current TV, daytime, prime time, comedy, drama, adults, children...if they've ever had any kind of recurring/regular television role and they've made me cringe, they are going to be on this list...this is my list of the worst television actors ever:

Taran Noah Smith

http://starcrush.com/files/2013/05/Taran-Noah-Smith-Home-Improvement.jpg

He played the youngest son of Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) on Home Improvement...he grew up and mercifully retired from acting, not that I would call anything he did on that show acting.

I agree too this about all the taylor cast but Al, Tim and The Neighbor Wilson.

Lynda Goodfriend

http://c8.alamy.com/comp/DT6YT7/lynda-goodfriend-happy-days-1984-DT6YT7.jpg

Goodfriend was most famous for playing Richie Cunningham's girlfriend and eventual wife on Happy Days...this show was a breeding ground for bad actors...Goodfriend is just the beginnning.

I agree 100% about Taran Noah Smith. He was the worst part of the show "Home Improvement".

I don't think Lynda Goodfriend was great on "Happy Days", but I didn't think she was so bad that she belongs on this list.

Antonio Sabato Jr.

http://www.generalhospitalblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/AntonioSJ.jpg

Daytime drama is one of the few places where an actor can kick start a career if he/she looks good without their clothes on and this was a prime example. Sabato was an underwear model who got a major career boost when he was hired to play a character named Jagger Cates on ABC's General Hospital. He became very popular, got very cocky, left the show, and his career began a slow and agonizing death, primarily because the guy can't act.

Vanessa Williams

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/ee/31/a1/ee31a163c2fec3b29421006602ebde0a.jpg

The other Vanessa Williams was part of the original cast of Melrose Place but was fired after the first season. She resurfaced briefly a few laters later on The Cosby Show as an obnoxious theater major at NYU who had a brief fling with Theo (Malcolm Jamal Warner) and I haven't seen her since.

Eddie Applegate

Applegate played Patty Lane's boyfriend Richard on The Patty Duke Show...this guy was the worst.

PR Paul

https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8534/8685473075_70962f085e.jpg

PR Paul played Montgomery McNeill on the NBC series Fame...the hook with this character in the 1980 film was that he was gay, but NBC was not having any of that, and the show really had no clue what to do with the character and, coupled with the fact this guy can't act, led to the actor being fired after the first season.

Kim Lankford

http://www.knotslanding.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/kim-lankford.jpg

Lankford played Ginger on the CBS series Knots Landing...this show was rich with brilliant actors so the bad ones stuck out like sore thumbs.

Maxwell Caulfield

http://ilarge.lisimg.com/image/2748635/1107full-maxwell-caulfield.jpg

He actually burst onto the scene as the star of one of the worst musicals ever made, Grease 2, but made his biggest impression (if you can call it that) playing Miles Colby on the Dynasty spinoff, The Colbys. He was pretty, but could not act.

Moosie Drier

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/photopost/data/707/md3.JPG

Moosie first appeared as the only child featured player on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In and later played Howard Borden's son on The Bob Newhart Show and was also a regular on something called Kids, Incorporated.

Roz Kelly

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/40/3a/bd/403abd2e7ea0a495707da2e118fccdba.jpg

Despite the fact that she had NO chemistry with Henry Winkler, Kelly wasted a lot of screen time on Happy Days as Pinky Tuscadero, a motorcycle stuntwoman who got serious with the Fonz.

http://40.media.tumblr.com/a936a38cb6ebda3ba4408e677a53e63e/tumblr_nian0d6Eah1rwv0r0o4_400.jpg

Beverly Archer

http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/tinytoons/images/c/c2/Beverly_archer.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130222020925

Don't let the fact that this woman has been working steadily in TV since the 1970's fool you into thinking she's a competent actress. Archer has had regular roles on The Nancy Walker Show, We've Got Each Other, Mama's Family, and Major Dad. I still think the woman is a terrible actress.

Gideon58

Lorenzo Lamas

Lamas flexed his way to stardom as Lance Cumson on the CBS prime time drama Falcon Crest, but his muscles couldn't hide the fact that he couldn't act.

Cathy Silvers

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/zatara2000/754.jpg

Supporting the theory that acting talent might skip a generation, the daughter of Phil Silvers joined Happy Days late into its run as Joanie's boy crazy friend Jenny Piccolo, a character who was never seen for years and should have stayed that way.

Kristina Wagner

http://www.etonline.com/media/video/2016/03/24220799/et_KristinaWagner_030316_hulu.jpg

Wagner first hit the daytime drama General Hospital in 1983 and had a smoking hot onscreen and offscreen romance with Jack Wagner...both romances ended, Kristina returned to the show a couple of years ago and she still can't act.

John Davidson

http://www.librarising.com/astrology/celebs/images2/J/johndavidson.jpg

One of the most recognizable faces from the 1960's and 70's. He was a staple on game shows like Match Game and Hollywood Squares and hosted a show called That's Incredible with Fran Tarkenton and Cathy Lee Crosby. He also played Sally Field's husband on a short-lived NBC sitcom called The Girl with Something Extra. He could sing, but nobody seemed to care and he definitely couldn't act.

Gideon58
05-25-16, 06:05 PM
82.

Karen Valentine

http://pthumb.lisimg.com/image/5259391/280full.jpg

Maybe the worst actress in television history to actually win an Emmy. She won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for playing student teacher Alice Johnson on ABC's Room 222. She also actually appeared in a TV movie called The Girl Who Came Gift Wrapped...enough said.

Gideon58
05-25-16, 06:55 PM
81.

Don Stark

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/photopost/data/540/That990.jpg

Stark is best known for playing Bob Pinciotti, father of Donna (Laura Prepon) on That 70's Show...I'm sorry, this guy was the worst.

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/bb/f1/56/bbf156ee94b7745787db8ce746e36c2b.jpg

The actress, and I use the term loosely, played Amanda Carrington, another long lost child of Blake (John Forsythe) and Alexis (Joan Collins) on Dynasty. The woman was breathtaking but she really should never have actually been given any lines...the character should have damaged her vocal chords in a terrible accident, rendering her mute.

Gideon58
05-25-16, 07:02 PM
79.

Phil Foster

http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/excuse-me-may-i-cut-in-10876-phil-foster-picture-id93369954

Foster played Frank De Fazio, father of Laverne (Penny Marshall) on Laverne and Shirley. Not only could this guy not act, he didn't act LOUDER than just about any actor in television history.

Gideon58
05-25-16, 07:11 PM
78.

Shelley Hack

http://kpitalrisk.free.fr/images/stars/82000/s_82510rg_fsa_shelleyhack.jpg

She went from spokesmodel for Charlie perfume to playing Tiffany Wells on Charlie's Angels...she was fired after a single season on the show.

Don't assume Gideon58 knows what he's talking about. This woman is one of the best things about Mama's Family and I liked her in other things she did. Yes, she is an oddball actress typecast in nerd woman roles, and Iola Boylan can get on your nerves, but nobody else could have played her. I strongly proclaim Beverly Archer was terrific - at least on Mama's Family. She also did guest roles on ALF.

Lyle Waggoner

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i02CXy2dNL0/TaWzEfhR07I/AAAAAAAABEM/cg94cWxFalY/s1600/Lyle+Waggoner.jpg

Haywood Nelson

Nelson played Dwayne on What's Happening, another show where pretty much the entire cast could be included here.

72.

Stephen Shortridge

http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/stephen-shortridge-gallery-shoot-date-august-25-1978-stephen-picture-id105092770

After getting an Oscar nomination for Saturday Night Fever, John Travolta had no intention of returning to Welcome Back Kotter, so the producers felt the show needed another pretty face to fill his shoes...enter the somewhat pretty but talentless Shortridge, who did nothing to help this show stay on the air.

Gideon58

71.

Tanya Roberts

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/52/Tanya_Roberts_1982.jpg

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/68/72/8b/68728b85f34b51c606daf4569985d4f9.jpg

"One white, one black, one blonde..." Lipton played the blonde on the ABC series The Mod Squad. She may not have been much of an actress, but she's no dummy...she realized she couldn't act and married money in the form of music legend Quincy Jones, but even that didn't stop her from resurfacing on ABC's Twin Peaks, where it was clear she still hadn't learned how to act.

http://imgc.allpostersimages.com/images/P-473-488-90/71/7146/VLWM100Z/posters/kent-mccord-adam-12-1968.jpg

He spent a couple of seasons riding around in a black and white with Martin Milner on Adam-12...he resurfaced several years later with a tiny role in Airplane II: The Sequel...don't know what happened to him after that.

Erica Gimpel

http://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Erica+Gimpel+8th+Annual+Pair+Celebrity+Concert+wpleBy7v6i6l.jpg

Gimpel burst onto television screens playing CoCo Hernandez on the TV series fame, the role that Irene Cara played in the 1980 movie. She's done a lot of guest starring on episodic television since then, but I still think she's a terrible actress.

Dianne Kay

She played one of Dick Van Patten's many daughters on Eight is Enough and after it was cancelled was apparently kidnapped by aliens because I have never seen her in anything ever again.

Gideon58
05-26-16, 05:43 PM
64.

Sarah Drew

http://www.eonline.com/eol_images/Entire_Site/2015112/rs_634x624-150212121146-634.sarah-drew-greys-anatomy.jpg

She plays Dr. April Kepner on Grey's Anatomy...every time she opens her mouth I want to stuff a sock in it.

Gavin O'Herlihy

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/photopost/data/943/medium/s1ep08_Happy_Days_The_Skin_Game.jpg

O'Herlihy was so bad as Richie's older brother Chuck on Happy Days that the character was written off the show and when the character was briefly resurrected for some reason, he was played by a different actor (Randolph Roberts).

Maurice Benard

Even though he's been playing teflon don Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital since 1993, every time this guy opens his mouth onscreen, he always sounds like he doesn't have his lines totally memorized.

Camo
05-26-16, 06:10 PM
Actually i think i posted that when i was on the previous page because i've seen Modern Family. I though the kid who played Manny was alright, nothing special but he didn't bother me. He was better than the kid who played Drew anyway, not sure if he'll show up later.

Don Stark

Stark is best known for playing Bob Pinciotti, father of Donna (Laura Prepon) on That 70's Show...I'm sorry, this gut was the worst.

Bob was half of the reason to watch this show, with Red being the other half.

Heather Morris

Donny Most

Mel Stewart

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/all-in-the-family-tv-show/images/c/c7/Mel_Stewart.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20121118150853

Shortly after All in the Family spun off the Jeffersons into their own show, Mike Evans, who played Lionel Jefferson, decided to leave the show and Damon Evans (no relation) was brought in to replace him. I don't think it was any coincidence that Lionel's role on the show was significantly reduced until they could convince Mike Evans to return to the role near the end of the 11-season run.

I'm not trying to seem confrontational. I really just wanted to know if you had acting training or something. It's always been kinda weird to me how people can see people as "bad actors" or say, "That's bad acting."

I don't look at people and think, he or she is a bad actor. If I like someone in a movie, I like something ELSE about them, I feel. Their energy, their charisma, their attractiveness, how they make me feel. I'm sure it's all very personal - for everybody, in fact.

I think the only thing that I ever saw Christopher Connelly in was a TV movie called Incredible Rocky Mountain Race (1977). That's how I judge actors as well...a good actor will arouse emotions in me...sometimes it's anger, sometimes it's empathy, sometimes they arouse a feeling that makes me recall something in my own life, and sometimes it's just the ability to make me smile, or cry, or even more important, fight the urge to cry...great acting will make me fight the urge to cry. Bad acting arouses no genuine emotion in me...sometimes the role spells out what kind of emotion I'm supposed to be feeling and if I don't feel that, that's bad acting...a comedy should make me laugh, a tearjerker should make me cry and if the actors don't make me feel that, that's bad acting.

Why would great acting help you FIGHT the urge to cry? Yet you say bad acting arouses no emotion. Wouldn't great acting MAKE you cry if you needed to?
Because fighting the urge to cry implies lack of control of what the performance is doing to me...if I'm watching a performance takes takes control of me, that's great acting...when Rose jumps off the lifeboat in Titanic and runs back to Jack, who smothers her and kisses and keeps repeating "You're so stupid, Rose, you're so stupid!", I don't want to cry but I find myself fighting it...great acting takes control of my emotions and makes me feel things I don't necessarily want to feel. In The Sound of Music, when the Baroness follows Maria up to her room and manipulates Maria into leaving, I want to punch the baroness in the face...I don't know if that was the intent of the scene. but the way Eleanor Parker played it, that's what I felt...Parker's performance in that movie sparked pure hate in me and I consider the Baroness one of cinema's greatest villains because of the emotion she brings out in me...hate. That's great acting. All bad acting does is take me out of the scene or make me want to watch something else.

She was one of my teenage crushes and one of the reasons I watched Eight is Enough - and she was a rare treat because, out of all the sisters on the show, "Nancy" got the least screen time & very few of her own sub-plots (maybe due to her acting skills?) Still, she was the prettiest with that all-American, Girl-Next-Door look!

His house was about a block away from mine in Milltown, NJ. I had to pass his house on the way home from my high school bus stop and he'd often be outside and want me to talk to him. I always remember he'd pick up rocks from a rock garden in front of his house and try to sell them to me! I'd joke with him and ask why I should pay for them when I could just take them any day when I was passing by. At age 6 he was about the cutest little tyke you ever did see.

I also went to grammar school with his uncle. We both played saxophone in the school band & he was the kid that took over my oldest brother's paper route (who cares, right?). ;)

So great acting makes you want to cry, but you stop yourself from doing it - because why cry?

Interesting. Most people seem to brag about crying. "I cried so much during this scene....."

You don't want to cry. You hold back the tears.

Very honest. I don't wanna cry, either. But I see what you mean. Great acting does make you emotional, can make you want to cry (or punch someone).... but you resist the urge to do those things.

I like that description. Most people brag about crying during movies. They may act embarrassed about crying, but they're bragging. You flat out admit you don't wanna cry. Which can be like bragging, too... but in an opposite fashion.

It hurts my heart a little to include this submission because I was a HUGE fan of Dynasty, but to be honest...the actress who first appeared during the 60's playing Audra Barkley on The Big Valley disappeared for at least a couple of decades before resurfacing to play Krystle Carrington on Dynasty. She was a lovely woman and nobody wore shoulder pads like she did, but the woman is no actress...like Josh Taylor, her facial expression never seemed to change, though I did love her knock-down drag outs with Joan Collins, the rest of her screen time was a big snooze.

I know Gideon mentioned the entire cast of What's Happening, but Danielle Spencer (who played Roger's little sister, Dee) was one of the worst line deliverers ever. She couldn't deliver a line that didn't sound like it was read off a cue card (and poorly read at that - she's often pause & stumble like a kindergartner who is just learning to read.)

And yet, as bad as her delivery was, and as bad as her "acting" was (if you can call it that), she was still kind of funny - and that quality seemed enhanced by the sheer ineptness of her acting ability.

No argument here, but it doesn't change the fact that Burt Ward was a bad actor. Even Adam West is working today, even if it is voice work, but what is Burt Ward doing? Still trying to milk what he can out the alleged legacy he created with one role.

Captain Steel
06-18-16, 02:44 PM
Interesting argument. Was Burt Ward ever given a chance to act in anything else or was he typecast?
The Batman TV show was a showplace for lots of big actors who wanted to appear on it, and did. But could we tell from their performances on this show who was a "great" actor and who was not (considering that everyone was camping it up?)

Could anyone really tell that Burgess Meredith was a great actor by his performance as the Penguin? (And don't get me wrong, he was great as the Penguin!) If anyone watches or compares his three different roles on the Twilight Zone they can come away and say "this man was a great actor" - the same by looking at his movie roles. But can they say that just by watching Batman?

So, if it's difficult to tell the greats from the amateurs due to the nature of a series like Batman, is Burt Ward being given an unfair shake since we have nothing else to judge him by?

Citizen Rules
06-18-16, 02:51 PM
Good post Captain, to me a bad actor is someone who reads their lines flat, when they're not suppose to. I mean Burt Ward read his lines with camp gusto and made a memorable character. I tend to agree that he didn't act again, do to type casting.

Same thing happened to the cast of Gilligan's Island. There were a lot of talented comic actors on that island but damn if they didn't have their careers killed by type casting.

OK sure Mary Ann - Dawn Wells wasn't the greatest actress but Ginger - Tina Louise was very good at light comedy. She had the makings of another Ann Margret. And if she had not done Gilligan's Island but stuck to movies, she might have been big in the 1960s.

Captain Steel
06-18-16, 03:01 PM
Too true, Rules. And Jim Backus was a fairly recognized actor with a pretty prodigious movie resume (of course, being the voice of Mr. MaGoo didn't hurt), but it seemed that Gilligan's Island sealed the lid on his acting career, relegating him to TV sit-com guest appearances.

True enough...A bit of personal trivia...Jim Backus, aka Mr. Howell, was my favorite Gilligan's Island character when I was a kid.

There was a child actor in the Batman TV series that ran in the 1960s. In it the kid says plaintifly, "Shame! Come back, Shame!" Check out the kid's acting.

I haven't read through this thread, but if number one is anybody other than that girl from "Small Wonder", you can all go fu*k yourselves. Granted, the show was beyond stupid, HORRIBLY written and directed, the rest of the actors are downright lousy, and after all Tiffany Brissette was only a child....but she was so bad that I hope she got cancer and died, in real life.

Not that I have any strong feelings on the subject.

Interesting list... But major disagreements on Phil Foster, Anson Williams and especially Donny Most. To me, Most is one of the best parts of the show, with his likeable character and very natural comic talent. With Foster I can see your point, but something about the guy just gets to me. Probably the least of the main actors is Eddie Mekka, but I like him as well.

Burt Ward is definitely goofy, but that's what makes him so funny to me.

I would include Madeleine Martin, who to me at first almost ruined Californication because of her monotone and empty screen presence, like she killed the room in every scene she appeared in. In season 6 she got slightly better, but is still not a very good actor.
And this is not a popular opinion, but Louis Lombardi annoyed the hell out of me in 24, and I don't understand why his character is so liked by fans. I thought he was a whiny crybaby.

I liked her in 24, but if her acting in Californication is any indicator, Sarah Wynter should NEVER do comedy again.

I just got through watching all 11 seasons of Happy Days and I have to agree with you Mattia, Donny Most was funny! He was one of my favorite characters too. I missed Ralph Malph with he left the show at the end of season 7. And of course I loved Laverne's dad! How cool is it that he owned the Pizza Bowl:yup:
