What Events You've Lived Through
... Rocked Your World?
Today, the artist known as Prince died.
This thread is dedicated to his memory.
It's a shocking moment for me.
What were your own shocking moments
that you've lived through?
What rocked your world?
Both good and bad events.
Both personal events
and world events.
Deaths, births, marriages, divorces,
world disasters, big moments in your history,
anything that rocked your world
and maybe changed it.
What events were those?

Since Prince was the inspiration for this thread, I will contribute another celebrity death that rocked me to my core...I was destroyed, absolutely destroyed, when I heard that Natalie Wood had drowned...I was sure it was a cruel hoax and kept waiting for someone to let me off the hook. I became obsessed with her after seeing a 1966 film called Penelope...the obsession was confirmed with my first viewing of West Side Story. And even though I was crushed when I learned many years later that she didn't do her own singing in the film, it did not deter my love. She was the ultimate movie star and I'm pretty sure that this was the first time I ever shed actual tears over a celebrity death. I will never be completely over it probably because, like Marilyn Monroe and JFK, I don't think we ever REALLY learned what happened on that boat that night and probably never will because there are only two people who are still alive who know what happened...Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken and they aren't talking, which I have had always had issues with...if it was a just a tragic accident and they have nothing to hide, why have they NEVER talked about it? Yes, Wood's death rocked my world and continues to do so.

Watching Charlies Angels for the first time as a teenager (the original TV show, NOT the movie) and seeing Farrah Fawcett. Had the poster too, and yes, if you flattened it out properly, you could hold it in one hand without it curling :D
I was partying at home with my best friends listening to new music from 1980 when I went out to get a few beers and my parents were watching Monday Night Football in the living room. Just then I heard Howard Cosell announce that John Lennon had been shot dead. Well, I told my friends about it and told them I was going to go lie down in my bedroom in the dark. I didn't come out again until the next day. Nothing else comes close, not even the passing of my Mom and Dad.
9/11 and various other terrorist attacks and mass murders.
The most shocking celeb death for me was easily Chris Benoit, even more than Robin Williams. He was one of my very favourite wrestlers seemed like a nice guy in real life then that horrible madness :(
A few things that happened to people i know:
My friends mum died; when he was about 11 she was only in her mid 30s. The most shocking thing was how she died. she had been drinking and arguing with her husband while they were driving back to Glasgow in a van and she decided to jump out of it :(
Someone the same age as me at school died after getting hit with a car when he was 13. He wasn't a friend or anything but i talked to him a few times.
Another friends dad won about 100 grand in the lotttery and almost immediately he got a new girlfriend and abandoned his wife and three kids who have never seen any of the money or him since.
Also these two tragedies that happened in Glasgow in the last few years:

I actually heard the noise of the crash as the pub was just a short distance over the river from where i stay.

Awful :(

Too many to count...
I feel the same. I have too many. And too many I don't wanna talk about. But if I think of something I feel like sharing, I'll post it.

It was a shock – I knew he was unwell a few days ago but didn't expect this. RIP Prince.
I think 9/11 followed by the death of Diana, Princess of Wales would have to be the two most shocking events.

The Viet Nam War was on TV when I was a kid (but I didn't really know what it was about).
The Moon Landing 1969 (at only 5 years old, still wasn't fully aware).
School (every start, every year, from Kindergarten through College) was always traumatic.
Getting mugged (assaulted) by a gang and surviving in 1983.
The Space Shuttle Challenger explosion (for this one I dedicated my usually humorous weekly comic strip for the University newspaper),
The first Gulf War (I & fellow co-workers thought we might get drafted).
Had multiple friends die or get killed during the 90's.
The L.A. riots.
Oklahoma City bombing.
9/11.
The 2003 Iraq invasion (my opposition to the idea cost me some friends at work).
Every terrorist attack since.
Hurricane Sandy (it quite literally "rocked" my world).
The Space Shuttle Challenger explosion
I wasn't alive but the first time i saw the video i was really shocked. Same with the Zapruder film.

Hopefully, I won't have to add "seeing Hillary Clinton become President of the United States" to the list!

Replace that with Donald Trump, and I think it's worse.
