Just finished watching the first two episodes of this new NBC sitcom that I was only attracted to because Patrick Warburton was involved. What I discovered is the potential for a really funny sitcom that has a clever premise but the writing is moving a little too far away from the premise established to make the show something original and amusing. Warburton and Emmy winner Carrie Preston play the parents of grown daughters who are happily adjusting to their empty nest when, four years later, both daughters have issues that force them to move back in with mom and dad. This is actually the germ of a really good idea for a sitcom that really hasn't been addressed before as the central issue, but the series is trying to get into a lot of other stuff as well, including Warburton's issues with his neglectful father (Stacy Keach), a bar owner, whose bar is actually the set of Cheers as well as the daughter's issues with each other, which we've seen in a million other sitcoms. The writers also can't seem to decide whether or not these parents are happy about their daughters returning home. They need to have the parents either hate having their daughters back or doing whatever they can to make them feel home again, but the wishy washiness of how they feel about the situation is not working. If the parents feelings could be clarified as well as a return to the original premise as the central theme, this could be something really special. Either way, Warburton is always worth watching, but unless the writing gets a little more specific, this one isn't going to last too long.

Just wrapped episodes 3,4, & 5 and it seems like every time the writing team takes two steps forward, it takes one step back. Episode 4 introduced Warburton's stepbrother, who has now moved into the house as well, which brings the show back to its original premise of adults living at home, but it was barely touched on in the next episode. Another part of the original premise that does seem to be working is Warburton's daddy issues...every scene Warburton does with Stacy Keach is golden, but I'm finding myself bored with any scenes that don't involve Warburton and Keach. Actually, as long as Patrick Warburton is kept front and center, I'm probably going to keep watching...even a reunion with his Rules of Engagement co-star David Spade was not that interesting. This show seems to becoming an acid test as to whether or not Patrick Warburton has what it takes to carry a sitcom because right now it's all about him.

Just wrapped episodes 7 and 8 and, sadly, the show seems to be moving further and further away from the original premise. I love Patrick Warburton, but even he might not be enough to keep me watching much longer. The original idea of the show was such a clever one too.

Just wrapped episode 12 and the show is back on track...Mike and Martina planned a weekend getaway for the two of them that, of course, never worked out. This show was the first episode that directly addressed the original premise in awhile.
