View Full Version : NERD ALERT!!! The Best Drummers Ever!!!

Ok, I've seen that we have a bunch of musiclovers here of which some also play themselves. I even spotted a few drummers which gave me the idea to this very geeky thread. LET'S DISCUSS OUR FAVOURITE DRUMMERS!!!

The three favourites of mine that come to mind are these:

Levon Helm - The Band.
Dave Grohl - Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age.
John Bonham - Led Zeppelin.

Helm is just so groovy and skillful. And then of course he sings great as well.

Grohl has always been an influence on me. He's powerful like few yet very technical. Combines punk rock and heavy metal and just beats the **** out of the drums. Coooooool....

John Bonham is the greatest drummer ever. I saw The Song Remains the Same the other day and I couldn't believe my eyes nor my ears. He's like the god of drums and so mighty! His drums always sounds so big and the way he played... oh man. The drum-beats he came up with is so cool and all the things he did sounds so easy when he did it. The word that comes to mind is "perfection" (in a good way). I don't understand why hip hop artists haven't sampled Bonham more - you'll have to look forever for bigger beats.

Excellent choices Piddz… :yup:

One of my favorite drum solos was by Ron Bushy-Iron Butterfly… In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida :D

And while not the best drummer around, one of the ones I have a lot of admiration for is Rick Allen from Def Leppard… only one armed drummer I’ve ever seen…

First of all.. Thank you for replying to my very specialized thread, Caitlyn!  DRUMLOVERS UNITE!!!!

Secondly. Ron Bushy-Iron Butterfly… In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida?? May I have a look at your cd-collection, please?? Is In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida the name of a band?? I would really love to hear that drum solo.

I'm kind of allergic to long solos whether it's guitarsolos, drumsolos or harpsolos. The 25-minute version of Dazed and Confused in The Song Remains the Same made me want to shoot Jimmy Page in the head. But there is one drumsolo that I will forever love because it made me want to play the drums and that's the drum solo in 100.000 Years from Kiss' Alive. Now, I realize that the guy (Peter Criss) is actually a pretty crappy drummer (which he confirmed when I saw the reunion tour in 1997) but it's oh so special to me. And if he's a crappy drummer who made a lot of cash then why can't i?? :D

The guy in Def Leppard. Well, I agree, it's pretty impressive in a way, but if I didn't know that he had only one arm I probably would think he sucked. He sounds like a drummachine. But at the same time I think it's admireable of the band to have faith in him and let him stay in the band after he lost his arm. And they continued to be successful after that tragedy too. So, thumbs up!

I think my next project is The Best Guitar Solos Ever! :D  :D  :D You're with my all the way, Caitlyn, right?!?!?!

You‘re nuts (in a nice way)…

Ron Bushy is the drummer for Iron Butterfly and the name of the song is In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida… Can’t believe you’ve never heard it… you definitely need to…

In July of 1968, Iron Butterfly released the monumental LP, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, featuring the 17:05 minute side-long track that shook the entire music industry with its phenomenal reception. 'Vida outsold every record in the history of recorded music within the first year of its release (over eight million copies sold) and therefore outgrew and outsold the standard of the music industry's "Gold Album" award. For this achievement, Iron Butterfly was subsequently awarded: The Industry's Very First "Platinum Album"! This historic award was created and presented by then-president of ATCO Records Ahmet Ertegun, who went on to become the current CEO of the WEA Group. Most recently, "Vida" received the Multi-Platinum award.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, stayed on the charts for 140 weeks, with 81 weeks in the Top Ten. To date the album has sold in excess of 30 million copies and remains an undisputed classic in the archives of rock with DJ's and audiophiles worldwide.

BTW… my CD collection is vast and varied… I have a little of everything from big band to metal (my favorite)… only sounds you won’t find in there are country or opera… ;)

Neill Peart: Rush, hands down the best I've ever heard.

Lars Ulrich: Metallica

Mickey Hart: Greatful Dead, Planet drum...

Phil Collins

...and Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) just because I like the big heavy assed booms.

Off the top of my head.

You're missing out.

Ck the old country... like in the big band era. There's some really great stuff in there.

Opera, I have to agree...though I do like some of Andrew Lloyd Weber's stuff.

I forgot when I posted that I do have the soundtrack to ‘O Brother Where Art Thou which I guess would be considered country… but that’s the only one… :D … And I can handle some of Johnny Cash’s early stuff so I’ll check some of the other out but I’m not promising anything… :nope: ;)

I'm thinking about removing Lars Ulrich after listening to St Anger. Cripes... I think he was banging on a trashcan!

I have always thought Lars Ulrich is pretty dull. And, yes, the new Metallica-track sucks.

moviefan20
06-18-03, 11:51 AM
I have to agree with you there Pidd and Toose...they claimed it was suppose to be heavier than their Heaviest album yet...but...I remember when i played the first track i thought to myself..."what the fudge is this". And another thing...they made this whole stink about Napster...and now they are allowing people to download unreleased tracks off the internet...after you buy their new album of course:rolleyes:

Piddzilla
06-18-03, 05:58 PM
Yeah, that Napster **** pissed me off too! And that annoying Lars Ulrich was the mastermind behind it. I have always thought he was irritating but after that I think he's a real.... dummy... or something. And he's danish too. :D

They said that they were going back to their roots or something but I prefer listening to Ride the Lightning, And Justice For All or Metallica any day. They're finished.

moviefan20
06-18-03, 06:02 PM
Did you see that Icon show with Metallica...it was on like two months ago...i thought Korn did an awesome performance of "One"...but yeah...I think Metallica is finished...I mean their own bassist left for Ozzy (and what a coincidence that Ozzy's bassist joined Metallica before that). This should make for an interesting Ozzfest.

Piddzilla
06-18-03, 06:26 PM
Of course I missed that Icon show. I really would have liked to see Korn do One. I heard that Snoop did Sad But True. That I would like to see!

I've heard that the bassist trade was done real friendly. But Jason did the right thing. I'd rather play with Ozzy nowadays than with Metallica. I saw an Ozzy-concert on MTV around last christmas and I have to say that the band he had, with the bass player that's with Metallica now, was really really good! They kicked ass!!! By the way, that drummer with the dreads, who used to be in Faith No More and sit in with Sabbath, is also a very cool drummer. I like him a lot.

moviefan20
06-18-03, 06:32 PM
That Snoop rendition was quite interesting..:yup: , different seeing a metal song being rapped...
I guess i heard differently...I heard the Metallica bassist left Metallica and that Ozzy's bassist quit him and went to Metallica....I am glad though it was done friendly...I am going to see Ozzy in August and I am really looking forward to it...I have the Live from Budakan (however you spell it) DVD and that concert looked really good.

Piddzilla
06-18-03, 06:45 PM
Ozzy... I really think that guy is amazing. I mean, after all those drugs and judging from his age and what you see of him on The Osbournes - that man should sound like crap! But he doesn't! I saw Black Sabbath in '98, I think it was, and he sang terrific! That concert was magnificent! It was the Hultsfred festival here in Sweden which is situated real beautifully by a lake. 27.000 people in the audience in the light scandinavian summer night (no, I am not getting paid for saying this), and I swear to you, the ground was shaking. People were bouncing up and down and it was literally moving. Never experienced that before or after that concert. They started with War Pigs and followed up with all the greatest songs, finishing with Paranoid. Yeah, it's a great concert memory....

Yeah, I knew it was Vinnie something. Just in case you thought I though Gene Hoglan is from Pantera, I didn't mean it that way...Hoglan played in Dark Angel and some other death/trash bands...uh, was it Dark Angel, or Death Angel, well whichever they had a great album called Bonded by Blood. I think. Damn, I'm getting old and out of it.

My favourite album is Vulgar Display of Power.

09-01-03, 04:31 PM
Yeah, that one is cool too. I have a problem deciding what to think about Pantera. Sometimes I get a feeling that they are a bit too... I don't know... dare I say rednecked?? There is no doubt though that they are probably one of the hardest bands out there. They are all excellent musicians and they create monster riffs.

2.Eric Carr-this guy rivals Bonham. Although not better, might as well be just as good.

3.Eric Singer-another KISS drummer, ALMOST as good as Carr. Indeed one of the better drummer ever.

4.Dave Grohl-absolutely amazing. I almost had him at #3

5.Lars Ulrich-one of the best Rock and Roll drummers ever. I hate his voice though, it creeps me out.

6.my brother Chuck. I'm not kidding this guy rocks. He can kinda sing, but his drumming skills are sweet.

7.Phil Collen-Def Leppard is my third favorite band ever, so as you can see I'm a big supporter of them as musicians.

Topper Headon of The Clash
Listen To: London Calling

These guys were always coming out with inventive unique beats that were the pulse of every song they played on. Listen to one of the albums I have mentioned focusing just on the drumming and you will see what I mean. Then listen to how they so tightly and perfectly interwove their beats along with the rest of the instruments to really make the song complete

Some interesting choices.

About the death metal guys, The lead guitarist and producer for Kultur, an east coast DM band, was discussing the DM drummers with me the other night, and he rattled off two of your four as being the worst in the business. Lombardo was revolutionary in the 80s, but is considered a hack these days. I mean really, do think he has anything on the dude from Opeth, who can play all the DM stuff as well as Jazz, Fusion, and he writes some music? Lombardo had speed (and was clearly doing speed), but his drum parts were....not that great, and he had zero nuance in his playing. This chap claimed drummers from Cradle of Filth and Opeth were the undisputed kings in many of his DM collegues minds... I mean any kid down the street can play a lot of these super fast beats, I know at least three in my area, and I don;t even listen to much Death Metal. Writing and arranging music is something else altogether, so drummers that can play AND write AND arrange win out in my mind.

As for me, my favorites to listen to are:

Neil Peart - He hasn't even been mentioned yet, and he created a lot of the progressive style so many use today. I am starting to find much of the Rush stuff to be trite and a bit insipid, but his playing taught so many to go beyond what they had seen and heard before...

Stuart Copeland - Just so damned MUSICAL with his drums. He has true musical arrangement skills as well, which I always find impressive, more-so than being able to play any instrument.

Carter Beauford - The band may have passed it's prime, in the minds of some fans anyway, but this man is a master of his instrument, and again, can write. Once again, very musical with his playing.

Mike Portnoy - Yup, I agree on this guy. He is the ****. Too bad he works with terrible vocalists all the time, forcing me to never listen to him.

All the old school guys are names to be revered, but Ringo? Oi, terrible player. Marky Ramone? Please, let's discard any sort of image these people had and focus on their skills, this guy used to fall off his throne all the time. Another dismal player.

Re: Chris Frantz- My old lead singer from my band in the 90s knows Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde fame, and when she toured with "The Heads" in the 90s, we got invited to a party with The Heads, and I got to sit down with Chris for about a half an hour, and he had the following to say:

"When I play, I am uncomfortable, as if I am constantly trying to keep from going over a precipice. There is always a certain amount of desperation in my playing, as I feel I can barely hold it together. These guys keep calling me up, though."

Funny how people perceive themselves. I too noticed the reservation in his playing, but felt it was what added that certain musicality to his playing that went so well with The Talking Heads stuff. Again, I feel he isn't the best player, but is a great musician. Ringo could learn a thing or two from Chris.

On a side note, all the people involved with The Heads were mad nice, save one. Tina Weymouth is a raging clam-bag, and you can tell her I said so...

These days I like:

Danny Carey (Tool), Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree), Scott Rockenfield (Queensryche), Dave Grohl (another great writer/arranger), Martin Lopez (Opeth)

If only this thread was titled 'the fastest drummers ever' then i'd definately have to say 'The Drummer' (don't know his real name) from The Berzerker. He's one of the fastest drummers in the world. 19bps (beats per second) per hand! That's impressive. If only he could have actually done more than hyper fast drumming. He has a lot of potential.

Also, on a side note Sedai. I was browsing amazon and found this drumming dvd (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000DK2ZZ/qid=1121717585/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_4/103-4663198-1490200?v=glance&s=dvd) that features 6 drummers playing for an hour each, one of the drummers featured is Mike Portnoy. And since it's just instrumentals and him jamming with dream theater on the dvd (while the main focus will be on the drums rather than on any other instrument, but that also means.....no vocals!) i thought that you would be interested in it. If not, there's no harm in simply pointing something out.

Thanks Blister...I have seen it! It was damn good. Mike is a master, and a dedicated artist. Surprisingly, I was very impressed with Steve Smith as well, which I didn't expect, what a master he is as well. That same day, we also watched a DVD with Terry Bozio on it, and, extremely bad 80s hair spray aside, he had some good things to say about "playing in the pocket" etc... Trying to think who else was on that one...Simon Phillips and Rod Morgensten maybe...all about double bass...check it out.

I like videos like these.

I think I shall be dipping into my wallet now to purshase some music dvd's. So far on my list I have:

'Modern Drumming 2003' (i think that was the title,...the dvd I pointed out in my last post)
'G3 Live in Denver'
'Joe Satriani Live in San Fransisco'

and i'm pretty tempted to buy 'Steve Vai Live at the Astoria' but not sure if i should just wait until another time (when it may be cheaper :))

The main thing I love about music dvd's that are mostly intrumentals, is that it's pretty much focused on the actual instruments and what the musician is doing, rather than just looking at the persons face, or showing an arena shot of the crowd. It gives you time to sit back and appreciate how talented the musicians actually are and why they deserve to get their fame.

The only downside on the G3 DVD is that it has Yngwie Malmsteen on it :( (i think), I cannot stand his playing, it's just fast, fast, fast! there seems to be no balance in his playing and he doesn't have too many great melodies which is a shame because he has all the speed, but he's just so focused on playing fast all the time. Also, Yngwie has some extremely bad hair styles,...he hasn't updated his hair since the 80's (and that's basically rewording your statement about Terry Bozio - 'bad 80's hair spray aside....', couldn't think of any other way to word that particular phrase there...)

Joe Satriani Live in San Francisco

I watched this a while back at the same dude's house. Joe is one of my favorite guitarists, simply because he can put such nuance in anything he plays, and he seems to think out of the box most of the time. Still, I didn;t really care for about half the set on that DVD. It's all a metter of taste, but I felt he could have put together a much better DVD as far as his track selection was concerned. First off, ace the vocal tracks! I have never been a fan of his vocal work, and the tracks seem lackluster to me in comparison to his more creative, experimental stuff. Why not play a couple tracks from Strange and Beautiful Music? A great, creative album that is also a divergence from his usual stuff, but still good music. Joe slapped nine tunes from Surfing and Flying in a Blue Dream, and didn;t play a single one from his classic rock style album. I sort of felt he was pandering because he knew it was going to DVD. Those old albums are great, but a man with such an extensive catalog of other music and creative B-sides to choose from should break it up a bit.

That said, the production value on the DVD was top notch, with multiple cameras running, and some slick editing and many good close-ups of the playing....
