The Scattergories Tournament

Scattergories will consist of songs that follow whatever theme or category the participating member chooses. The participating member will indicate what the theme of their songs are. There may not be 2 identical themes or categories. So, if two people want to select "Apples" as their theme, whoever posts their songs first gets through, the other will have to think of a different theme or category.

Please Note: There have been a lot of drop-outs from these tournaments recently, so if you're not planning to vote throughout the entire tournament, you're welcome to comment and join the discussion, but please don't join the tournament just to drop out later. It affects the flow of the tournament, and upsets the host.

Plus, due to the fact that it's unfair to the other members of the tournament, the new rule is that if you drop out, your songs will automatically be eliminated, and if necessary, whatever songs they're up against will get a free pass to the next round.


Rules:
All genres are eligible, with no limitations on genre as listed above. In addition, songs that are previous tournament winners and songs that are over 10 minutes long are NOT eligible.

I think it's safe to assume that everyone will be able to nominate at least eight songs, so you can start posting your nominations as soon as you join the tournament. Please keep your nominations in one post. You can edit your nominations up until the time the nominations close, but please make a new post to let everyone know that your nominations have changed.

Any song is allowed as long as you can provide a link to it. Everyone uses YouTube, but you can also link from other sites if you prefer, as long as they don't require anyone to sign up for the site to listen to the song.

To be fair to everyone, you must listen to both songs to vote. You must vote from the beginning of the tournament to continue voting throughout the tournament. Unless a tie-breaking vote is requested, anyone who hasn't voted consistently will not be allowed to vote in the final rounds.

I was having trouble naming my theme, even though I knew what I was going for. I PM'd mojofilter with three words to help describe the mood. He gave me a fantastic "theme title" to go with in response. Thanks dude!

Basically, this is music that is in your face and visceral. I think all music makes you have some sort of emotional response, and these songs/artists represent the "negative" extremes on the emotion/mood spectrum. It is music people often hate for being so abrasive. Words like anger, grime, depression, trashy, help give an idea of what I'm going for. The perfect music to listen to on a rainy night... while lying in the gutter next to a dark alleyway full of garbage.

I am really pushing for variety with this tournament. I think we should be conscious of our themes and try to do stuff that is different and unique from what's been done. I don't mean to tell you guys what to do, if I have to be the one to change my theme - as much as I don't want to - I will.

Especially with the dark, angry music. If it was just me I'd be game, of course, but I know that kind of music might turn some people off of the tournament, and I don't want that to happen.

I would love that, but when we did country music a while back, everyone nominated old country music, like Patsy Cline and Merle Haggard. Non-country music fans don't seem to realize that there's been country music through the years, and there's still country music today, and some of it is even better than the old songs.

One of the neat things about this tournament is how creative we can be with our themes. It could be really fun and varied. They can be specific and still be something that resonates with us. I know mine is kind of lame but it was the theme I had in mind when I suggested an Emotion Song Tournament.

I agree. I think cities was a perfect example of the way a theme tournament should be done. Clothing is another great example. Also, if Citizen Rules does his foods theme, that was a great idea too.

Other ideas include things like transportation, colors, etc.

I just looked, and I found out by comparing the lists, that Honeykid, Hubby, and Cricket aren't in this set. If we all drop one song each, that would be seven songs for each of us, and the two of them, and then 2 songs to start, for the third person. I will give up another song, as well, to make it six for me, and three for that person. Is this how we fix the problem, or what exactly? I've only been in two tournaments, so far, so I'm a little lost.

Well, if Cricket, Honeykid and Hubby would like to join in, you could always go with six songs. Not that you actually want to hear that. I'm very willing to do so, myself. I'm fine with six songs for my list, and everyone being able to join in. Besides, we would only need three to four other people to spare another song, if all of those guys want to join in. If everyone drops one song, then Cricket and Honey would have seven songs each, just like the rest of us, and there would still be two songs spare. Then, if Hubby wants to join, he can take those two songs, another one of mine, one more of your songs to make six for you Omni, and another one of GBG's, because she married him. They've used their "Disney Interactive Studios" label which is the name of the their dev studio, but I'm pretty sure the vast majority of work is in Square Enix's pocket. My guess is DIS might develop assets natively and send them over to SE to work with.

I can't tell you how anyone else randomizes the songs, but when I do it, I put the entire list into the randomizer (https://www.random.org/lists/), and then I copy and paste the entire list into a basic text editor. (I use Notepad in Windows, but any text editor should work.)

Then I start at the top of the list, and I count down the list, and separate into sections of 16 songs per section. (16 songs is 8 matches per set.) That gives you your complete list for each day, until the round is over, then you do the same thing with the winners list at the end of each round, putting the whole list into the randomizer, and separating into sets of 16 songs per set.

It's up to you if you want to do the extra work of making sure that people's nominations don't go up against each other. If you want to do that, you have to put something, (I use a number), at the beginning of each nomination. Use the same number for each song by the same person, and it basically becomes a part of the nomination as it goes through the tournament. Then you just have to watch that the same number doesn't get matched against itself. If it does, just swap it with one of the songs either above or below it.

If you want to do that, you have to put something, (I use a number), at the beginning of each nomination. Use the same number for each song by the same person, and it basically becomes a part of the nomination as it goes through the tournament. Then you just have to watch that the same number doesn't get matched against itself. If it does, just swap it with one of the songs either above or below it.

I tried initially going for something to do with feelings or emotions, but I could never think of 8 songs to go with it. Then I considered using songs released from Olympic years, because of Rio, but then that didn't work out either :lol: so in the end, I went for this because everything else just failed

One Hit Wonders!

The main thing I used to judge whether or not they were a one hit wonder was considering how high their other songs charted in Anglophone countries in comparison to their most popular hit. I also excluded home countries, because one or two had other hits in their native that failed to chart anywhere else.
