OMG, this episode was amazing, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed this show so much...the central character (Ellen Pompeo) is severely injured by a patient, leaving her without her hearing temporarily and her speech and the episode was extremely effective in showcasing a patient's emotions about what they are going through...the best part of the show was the crisp and in your face direction and imagine my surprise while watching the credits which revealed this episode was directed by two time Oscar winner Denzel Washington! His work here deserves an Emmy to put next to those Oscars.
Wow this is a specific thread :p

I loved this episode also. Maybe one of my favorites of the entire run of the show. What got me was that they showed Meredith smile several times at the beginning of the show before the attack. They almost never let her character smile and she looks like a totally different person when she does smile. So beautiful. Then the attack happens. And of course she's not smiling afterwards until the near-end scene with Karev. I liked how Penelope Blake clipped Mer's wires so she could breathe and the way Penelope stood up to Jackson. I think Meredith's opinion of Blake changed at that moment. You could see at the end when she was picking someone to answer her question that she was softening on Penelope, as she was looking right at her. This tied in with the theme presented in the prologue where Meredith talked about men getting called on more than women. It also had a lot to do with Meredith talking about women having a voice in things, and she was partly talking about the fact that she lost her voice after the attack.
Anyway, very fine episode.

Agree with everything you said and am so glad someone else noticed how amazing this episode was and yeah, I would put it in the top five of the best episodes in the twelve years the show has been on the air...and I can't believe Denzel directing this episode had nothing to do with its quality.
