It's fantasy baseball time! Whoo!
First thing's first: if you're not in this league, there may be room for you! It's a pretty competitive league, so you'll want to have played fantasy baseball before. If you have, reply and let me know what you want to play, and we'll see what we can do.
If you played last year, you should already have an invite waiting at the same email addresses you used last year. If you don't have one, please PM me (http://www.movieforums.com/community/private.php?do=newpm&u=1) the address you're using and I'll have another sent.
Okay, onto the draft time. I'm suggesting a tentative date of Sunday, March 13th at 1:00 PM ET (10:00 AM PT). A backup date is the following week (March 20th) at the same time.
Please reply by letting me know your availability for both dates. IE: "I can do both the 13th and 20th" or "I can do the 13th but not the 20th."
Here's the list of owners, which I'll update as they're confirmed (amusingly, three of you confirmed while I was writing this):
Yoda (Freedonia Ducks)
Sedai (Clockwork Angels)
mikeython1 (Done and Dunn)
Banknotes Harper (High-Level Arbitrage)
mark f (Dodgers)
TONGO (The Naturals)
Adamantium18 (Quickie Marte)
Frightened Inmate #2 (The Loose Seals)
rauldc14 (Peanuts&Crackerjacks)
seanc (Mudville Nine) Powdered Water (The Russell Wilson 9)
Fabulous (The Empire)
ursaguy (North Side Chi)

If there's an available spot, I'll join.
Onto the rules: recent changes, and possible changes.
Last year we added OBP and Holds, and I think most of you liked that (the latter, in particular, made drafting relievers way more interesting, and less of a crap shoot). Given that it was approved last year, we'll be using this unless stated otherwise, but I'm open to hearing any objections, especially if anyone feels strongly about this.
My guess is we're all pretty happy with last year's rules about trades, transactions, etc. The only significant change we might want to entertain is whether to switch to an Auction draft instead of a Snake-style draft. This is a big change, so we'll need a lot of buy-in from a number of owners to seriously consider it, but I wanted to mention it right off the bat as something a couple owners have talked about the last couple of years.
Anyway, the floor is open: any rule changes you guys want? Replying to say "all of that sounds fine whether it happens or not" is useful, too! :)
I like the idea of an auction draft. Ive never really done it, but it looks appealing. Only worry is its MUCH different than standard drafting and people just wont know how to do it.
Oh Im sorry I didnt read the first post. Yes Im ok with any date or time. Sorry.

Hi, everyone!
It feels good to be thinking about this stuff again. In response to everything that's been asked so far:
Logistics:
-Both dates in March should be fine for me.
Rules/stats:
-Holds are great; keep them.
-We should consider replacing wins with quality starts, because wins are a silly stat in real life and even more so in fantasy baseball. Additionally, quality starts are specific to starting pitchers, whereas relievers can get wins. Playing with wins, holds, and saves devalues starting pitchers, but swapping to QS, holds, and saves shift value back to starters.
-I think OPS is a better stat to play with than OBP, if we wanted to make that switch, but I'm also cool with OBP. My real dream is to play a league with OBP and SLG rather than AVG and OBP/OPS, but that's an aside.
-We could consider the idea of giving each team an extra roster spot given that we adopted holds, which creates a need for a more diverse pitching staff.
Auction draft:
-We switched to an auction draft in my other league and everyone really liked it.
-PROS: The auction draft is a more fair system; it, for instance, allows every manager to have a chance at drafting, say, Mike Trout or Bryce Harper, whereas in the snake format, you have no chance of getting either player if you're drafting 5th or later. The auction has a lot of strategy involved and it better rewards the managers who are prepared for the draft. It's also fun.
-CONS: It takes longer (maybe 3 hours for my auction last year, compared to 90 minutes for a snake draft), though it's definitely more engaging. It makes it more imperative that everyone attends the draft, rather than having the computer auto-draft. Having one or more computers drafting is undesirable for all parties, I think.

I'm second, so probably out of luck, but I'd love to get in on this as a new guy if spaces open up.

i can do the 13th but definitely not the 20th.
i also like the idea of quality starts over wins.
Now I like quality starts over wins too.
Did my first mock auction draft, only long enough to get 2 players, Mike Trout & Clayton Kershaw yee haw! Yeah even for a total of $106 that aint gonna happen here. Tims right it takes waaaay longer, think this type of draft I will set up a predraft lineup beforehand, out of necessity. No way I could be present for whole time, but I sure will be there.
I can do both the 13th and 20th :)
Fine with whatever stats we want to use, and I am game for trying the new draft format, as well!
Should I wait till the league is set to auction style before editing my pre-draft rankings? Didnt know if it just rolls over or not. When I tried to do a mock auction it wouldnt let me use my MoFo League rankings that Id started on saying it wouldnt allow a standard draft rankings to be used in an auction draft.

Oh and either date I'll find a way to work it out.
So far, everybody who's weighed in can a) do the 13th and b) likes switching to Quality Starts.
We have one "no" for the 20th and one "idk" for auction. And I think it's fair to say we should only switch to auction if the support is pretty overwhelming.

My schedule is all over the map theses days so I can't be sure if either date will work. I'll just take whatever day you pick and try to plan on it. The auction sounds fun but I don't think I can truly give it the kind of time that it will take to be prepared. I mean, I don't prepare now, so... I feel I'd be at a disadvantage. Changing some of the stat categories sounds fine too, I guess. Although I'm pretty happy with the way they are now too. So I guess I'm a solid maybe.
Oh. and IN!
I'mma win this bitch this year!
Youa winna nothing! NOTHING!

I'm fine for the 13th and whatever rule changes you guys want to make im good with.
Well I guess were sticking with normal draft. Its too bad as Auction seems to be alot more fun. Getting into a bidding war is fun. :yup:
The Rays got Corey Dickerson. I know that guy can seriously earn, I really hope he doesnt fall off dramatically leaving the thin air of Colorado. If he bats behind Longo, oh baby! Hopefully we'll be keeping Loney too and he can rebound from last year where he missed 80% of season from injuries.
Fabulous
02-23-16, 08:39 PM
I should be available for both draft dates. I would prefer a standard snake draft. I've never participated in an auction draft and it's my first year in this league, so I would prefer to stay in my comfort zone for my first season. I'm fine with everything else. :)
Since he just replied, now's a great time to welcome our newest owner to the league! :) seanc decided to take a break this year, so Fabulous is filling in. He joined (and won) the football league this past year, too, so a few of you have already competed against him.
We'll probably be adding one more new owner in the next couple of days, too, which would bring us to 12. Unless we get a couple of more requests for entry, that's probably where we'll end up.

I'm in! Either Sunday works for me. Heading to Bradenton the 26th thru April 3rd. Going to live the dream. I played a work league last year where we used QS over wins and it was great. So I am in on that. As far as the Auction format I do think a number of owners would get blown away by the changes of switching. Probably myself included. I am too afraid to give up what we have to try something new and have it blow up. Because this is 6 wonderful months of baseball that we don't want to be sour about because we messed up and over bid on some lowsy players and let someone run away with it because they had the remaining money. Why don't we do a secondary league of an auction style for those who what to give it a whirl and reconvene at the next winter meetings to see if we can agree on it. I do like the Auction style but I don't feel comfortable in staking a half year of my time to a team that might be completely crap.
Also idk about you guys but if you can find a 13 & 14th player I would be down for that as well.

A couple of thoughts:
-It looks like the idea of an auction draft is dead for this season—which is sad, but certainly understandable. If there was sufficient interest, I'd do a mock auction draft with the other members of this league that wanted to try one to see what it's like.
-I don't know how serious we are about expanding beyond 12 members, but I think we should decrease the roster size if we do. At the moment we have 12 teams of 23 players (276). If we went to 13 or 14 managers, we'd be looking at 299 or 322 drafted players, respectively. Approaching 300 drafted players really thins out the bottom of your active roster and really thins out the FA pool. So, I'd propose that we cut our roster size by 1 spot per added manager (so 13 managers x 22 roster spots = 286; 14 managers x 21 roster spots = 294).

I would like to do more Auction style drafts. We did do a 14 player league a couple of years ago if I am not mistaken. I actually like the depth aspect the most here. You are not just drafting the top all-stars all the time. For the same reason why everyone likes the Auction, I like this because it requires more preparation and you need to stay constantly in-tune with what is going on in the league. The attention for this is something you need throughout the whole year and not just in the initial draft week.
So I am Pro 14 players with full rosters, but that also requires 2 more serious FB owners.

So I am Pro 14 players with full rosters, but that also requires 2 more serious FB owners.
So having a bigger roster means a thinner FA pool and I think that puts much more emphasis on the draft and doesn't reward people who want to keep up with the daily happenings of MLB.
I think fantasy baseball should be a balance of the draft, in-season transactions, and who you actually start and it should be roughly to the tune of 45%, 45%, 10%; which is to say that in-season moves matter a lot and, over the course of the year, can have as large of an effect on your team as the draft, whereas picking the daily start versus bench roles shouldn't matter too much provided you're updating your roster and rotating your pitchers. (For comparison sake, I think fantasy football is something like 60/20/20 and the draft matters a lot more).
So I proposed and would be in favor of increasing our roster size to 24 if we don't add anybody else, but I do think we should avoid having gigantic rosters (or large(r) rosters with more teams in the league) because it cuts into the potential rewards for the managers who are active.
Banknotes Harper
02-24-16, 04:16 PM
And I think that - current roster size plus snake draft - strikes a nice balance between the people who are very active and those who are less active. (I think our league is really, really good and all of the managers do a nice job of keeping up with their teams)
Don't let me disrupt the conversation or anything, but a quick update: please welcome Matt (aka ursaguy (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=87463)) to the league!
That gives us two new owners, and 12 teams total. Barring a late surge in interest for a couple more people, this'll probably be our slate. And since everyone who's weighed in has said they're okay with March 13th and Quality Starts in place of Wins, the plan for now is to go with both.
Adamantium18
02-24-16, 04:38 PM
So what are all the categories for this year. I remember something else being different last year.
Also I want my Pirate hat back! :)
In addition to Wins in place of QS, the other non-standard categories are OBP and Holds.
Yeah, we gotta get you that hat back soon!
Oh screw it, lets just do the draft in a half hour, send the emails and we'll just get er dun' ! Charge!

Can we draw our draft positions ahead of the draft again? Did anybody have a problem with that?
We didn't do that last year, I don't think, but we can, yes. I could draw them randomly and then enter the order.
Banknotes Harper
02-25-16, 02:54 PM
We definitely did that last year:
http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=38876&page=5
Yeah I remember now. I got rd 12.
Wow, how'd I forget that. My bad.
It'll be too hard getting everyone to even check this thread, but I think because this is still random and everyone was cool with it last year, I'll give everyone about 24 hours to object, and if nobody does, I'll determine the order randomly tomorrow.
Oh, but worth noting: that only applies to "pick the order randomly in advance." I think we need a lot of buy-in if we want to pick the order that in turn decides who gets to pick their order. We should've remembered to bring that up last week, but it might be hard to do now, especially since a few owners only check in every couple weeks.
Banknotes Harper
02-25-16, 03:06 PM
Wow, how'd I forget that. My bad.
To be fair, when you said we didn't do it, I panicked and thought I was crazy, so I only somehow barely remembered that it happened.
I only remembered today in the first place because my friend, Doug, told me that his league drew in advance and he got the #1 pick.
Fine with knowing our draft order in advance. :)
Adamantium18
02-25-16, 06:07 PM
I am down with knowing ahead of time. Gives everyone more time to prepare a strategy and where they would potentially pick from. I am also down for randomizing an order so you can pick a spot to draft from. I actually like this option the most.
Banknotes Harper
02-25-16, 06:34 PM
I would be for that also, but I also understand that it's somewhat difficult to hear from all 12 managers on here in a rushed manner.
Yeah, we'll have to do that early next year. I do think it's a fun idea.
Anyway, no objections yet, so I'm going to randomize the order soon. I'll just take the team names as listed on the league site, number them 1-12 on that order, and use random.org or something to pick the order. First team goes first, second goes second, etc.
I'm going to announce them one by one as I they get picked in a little bit. GET HYPED.
Banknotes Harper
02-26-16, 12:03 PM
I know that there's no way to do this, but it would—in the parlance of our times—hype, if you could live stream this.
Lets do this!

I know that there's no way to do this, but it would—in the parlance of our times—hype, if you could live stream this.
I actually could, when I got home, stream it on Twitch, but that's probably overkill and I'll bet only like three of you would watch.
I'll start making selections in like 10-15 minutes.
Banknotes Harper
02-26-16, 12:13 PM
After I typed that, I realized that Twitch exists, plus it's 2016 so there's actually a lot of ways to live stream it, but also agree that it's overkill and unimportant, largely.
Okay, so here's the list:
http://i.imgur.com/JjcPZpF.png
So for purposes of the random draw, that makes me team #1 and North Side Chi team #12. I'll use random.org to draw a number 1-12, and that team will pick first. Then I'll reorder our teams 1-11 and do the same thing to see who picks second, and so on. Here we go.
Sorry, work stuff. Just a minute.

Okay, first number is: 3!
First pick goes to mikeython1 (Done and Dunn).
Second number is: 8!
Second pick goes to rauldc14 (Peanuts&Crackerjacks).
Third number is: 7.
Third pick goes to Frightened Inmate (The Loose Seals).
Fourth number is: 7 again!
Fourth pick goes to Powdered Water (The Russell Wilson 9).
Fifth number is: 2.
Fifth pick goes to Sedai (Clockwork Angels).
Sixth number is: 7 yet again.
Sixth pick goes to ursaguy (North Side Chi).
Seventh number is: 6.
Seventh pick goes to Fabulous (The Empire).
I love that the three people on here now following closely still haven't shown up.
Eighth number is: 2!
Eighth pick goes to Banknotes Harper (High-Level Arbitrage).
Ninth number is: 4!
Ninth pick goes to Adamantium18 (Quickie Marte).
Tenth number is: 3.
Tenth pick goes to TONGO (The Naturals).
Eleventh number is: 2!
Eleventh pick goes to mark f (Dodgers).
Which means the last number has to be 1, which means I pick last. Ha.
For a moment I worried that the random number generator was only picking numbers at least above 1 and I'd have to do it over, but I did it a few more times and it turns out 1 can indeed show up, so we're good.

Yeah, ESPN's board slates something like Giancarlo/Abreu/Gomez/Kluber for my first four picks. Not that those are even close to being concrete, but it's fun to see what the slots give me.
Mine would be Altuve/Bryant/Marte/Sale. Not that I'll take all four, but it gives you an idea.
At first glance, I think my ranking is fine. I think there's a tier of guys from 9-15, so if I'm going to be in that tier, best to be near the end of it. I think if I could pick I'd be 5th or 6th, but who knows.
Sorry I missed this, something came up and I had to go.
10th is ok I guess. I picked last before and its really nice to pick 2 at a time. Youll be fine Yoda. I dont think FBB is like Fantasy Football being where you draft is so critically important. Baseball talent pool is huge. Glad we can know now ahead of time, ill be haunting the 10th slot in mock draft rooms now.
Banknotes Harper
02-26-16, 02:45 PM
I'd ultimately prefer a top 3 or maybe 4 pick, but what can you do? I would say that after (maybe) your third pick the draft order stops mattering a whole lot and it's just up to you to craft your team.
8th pick firmly puts me in the McCutchen/Giancarlo/Scherzer zone, I'd imagine, but it's hard to assume a lot here. Concretely, I'm sure that Trout, Harper, Goldy, and Kershaw will be gone (in some order), but then it starts to get a bit hazy.
5th! I'll take it!
I better get a few mocks going to see how things are shaking up, even if it's a bit early yet.
Still a little over two weeks away to the draft. Ugh. Its gonna be a long month till opening day. March really is a stupid month :|

Are we allowed to trade draft picks? 6 is kind of an ugly spot to be in with such an obvious top 4 and a pretty equal rest of the round.
I...guess so? It's never come up, but I can't think of an issue if it's just a straight swap. Though you just undercut your argument by saying your pick is ugly. :D
Im way out of the loop when it comes to current baseball. I was shocked to see Aroldis Chapman is gonna be the Yankees closer -ouch ouch ouch!-, and knew Price was with the Blue Jays, but then he isnt! Hes on the Red Sox now. No difference really.
Doing a mock in the 10 spot now, and after round 5 I have Miggy, Encarnacion, Jose Fernandez, Grienke, and Tulo. I just know this will not actually happen, but every year I still get a charge of confidence from it. Every year the sky falls. :yup:
Hey Ursa if you can wrangle that deal then go for it, but I truly believe you can win a season regardless of draft positioning. The fantasy baseball talent is deep, and gets deeper with newcomers.

Hey guys, one of our owners might have to take a break from the league, it turns out. Or the Charlotte Hornets. Although PW would have to take his team back next year for that analogy to work.
Ill be picking 10th and so always go 10th in mock drafts. The mock Im doing now Ive got Cutch, Encarnacion, Grienke, and Price. Im wondering if Im wasting my time with these mocks as Id be shocked if I could land that drafting against y'all. It happened last year when I went last. I haven't done a mock yet, but I should do a couple sooner rather than later. I made some spreadsheets, though! Hopefully ol' Goose Gossage won't come through and call me a nerd.
I know I can't wait! I have been doing Mock Drafts like crazy!
I just did another picking 10th and my first 4 rounds were Correa, Bautista, Price, and Braun. Not as impressive as many already done.
I've done a handful of mocks. Last couple of years I've mostly just waited until the last week and done a few a day.
I have a general strategy, but very often the draft takes crazy turns and I have to tweak what I'd planned to do. We'll see what happens. With baseball, though, it really is won and lost during the season a lot more than during the draft.
Just jumped into a mock, but forgot I already had my position until a couple of picks in, so I am in 12th...I will grab a few at the correct position after this!

12th a pretty sweet spot to pick from. I built a keeper last year from 12th.
Yodas gonna be in the top 3 again  At least Ill be in the top 1 :)

No love for the defending champ. Typical.

Honestly you were more of an anomaly than me last season but to the good. Your draft was so whacked, only drafting 1 or 2 starting pitchers, and ended up on top in pitching categories. Its gonna be tough year, but I gotta make dayum sure you Pittsburgh boys get nothing this season. :D
Plus Ive made it too easy for yall by playing like a dumbass. Ive held to a nonfiddle playing style thru fantasy football this last season and will carry it over. It finally clicked when I realized its better to lose normally than to win like I did in 2011 ever again.
Fabulous

Well, something just came up and I most likely won't be available for the draft... :(

Just make sure you rank your players and it will draft accordingly for you.
I am like, uh, ready for some baseball. Less than 24 hours to the draft im doing a gotta go pee dance level ready.

Defending champs are always so defensive.
Get. Hyped.
Hype is mandatory.
I'll be coming around to check on each of you to make sure you're hitting your hype quotas.

Okay, that represents an acceptable hype level. Move along.
I needed some coffee before any hypeness could happen.

Am fully hyped!
On my second cup over here. By the time the draft starts I'll probably be too jittery to even click the right names.
And believe me, I know the right names.
The coffee is flowing... Eating a sandwich, as well!
I am wondering if I will get Harper in round 3 like I did last year...
:nope:
MoFo fantasy drafts, a place where the coffee flows like wine.

Everyone move their clocks forward an hour. Just in case, dont want someone showing up hour into the draft, well uh...., hm. Nevermind!
Yeah, I think next year I think I'll make a special point not to hold the draft the afternoon after Daylight Savings Time. D'oh.
That said, half an hour to go, so the draft room should be opening shortly.

Almost time - get in that draft room!

I'm moderately happy. I got way more of the early round guys I wanted than I thought I would, but fewer of the mid draft picks. We'll see how it shakes out.

Looking over the teams, I'm a big fan of the Dodgers, Ducks, and Mudville Nine, but pretty much all of the teams have strengths and/or upside.
