That's why I said that I won't force anyone to give up a nom. I'm only asking for people who are willing to offer a nom.

We might not get the full eight, but we might at least get you a few songs. (It only takes one song to win if it's the right song. :))

Thanks Chyp. If Tugg wants the spot, I just need to know which song to remove.

See Tugg, that's two noms for you already. :)

I'm just verifying that this is the right song to drop:

Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c3nScN89Klo)

And I dropped George Strait - Lovebug (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kTg2-T-PTr8) from my noms, so as of right now, I need two noms from Tugg to replace them.

I sent a PM to everyone who joined this tournament, just to make sure that they saw the request above, but again, nobody is under any obligation to give up a nom, and there are no hard feelings towards anyone who doesn't want to give up a nom.

I'm just hoping that maybe we can get Tugg a few more nom spots. :)

ROUND 1 - DAY 1:

3 - The Outfield - Your Love vs. 11 - Peggy Lee - Fever-This is tough because I really like both. I'm going with the song I think of more as a love song.

3 - Don Henley - Boys of Summer vs. 7 - Extreme - More Than Words-Two good songs that I've been sick of for many years. I'm going to be partial to slow songs this tournament.

6 - The Fureys And Davey Arthur - Sweet Sixteen vs. 1 - Roberta Flack-The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face-The first is very nice. The second is one of my favorites.

10 - Bananarama - Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye vs. 12 - Heartache Tonight - Eagles-The second is fortunate to get my vote because, while I love it, it's not what I'm looking for here. I just hate what Bananarama did to a song I love.

10 - Dean Martin - Ain't That a Kick in the Head vs. 6 - Brothers Osborne - Stay A Little Longer-The other song was nice though.

7 - Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl vs. 6 - Dean Martin - Sway-Of course I love Jessie's Girl, I nominated it recently. I just don't think of it in this way, but the other I do.

8 - Ed Sheeran - Give Me Love vs. 15 - Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up-I was a teen when the second song came out; I liked it then and I still do, but it's just a pop song to me. Never heard the first before, and it was good.

1 - Billy Joel-Just the Way You Are vs. 2 - Billy Ocean - There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)-Like the Ocean song, but I prefer the first.

ROUND 1 - DAY 1:

The Outfield - Your Love vs. Peggy Lee - Fever ("Your Love" just has more flavour to it)
Don Henley - Boys of Summer vs. Extreme - More Than Words (Both great songs, but "More Than Words" is more consistantly great throughout)
The Fureys And Davey Arthur - Sweet Sixteen vs. Roberta Flack-The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Such beutiful voice of Roberta Flack and she sings the song dreamily. I added "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" to my favorites, thanks Cricket. The first song was good too)
Bananarama - Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye vs. Heartache Tonight - Eagles (I feel the rhythm of "Heartache Tonight" more)
Dean Martin - Ain't That a Kick in the Head vs. Brothers Osborne - Stay A Little Longer ("Ain't That a Kick in the Head" is fun to listen, whereas "Stay A Little Longer" is less dynamic)
Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl vs. Dean Martin - Sway ("Sway" is classic, great melody, singing, music and violins hard to beat, "Jessie's Girl" could only have won agaist song I don't like)
Ed Sheeran - Give Me Love vs. Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up ("Give Me Love" was allright, whereas "Never Gonna Give You Up" is one of the best pop songs of 80s)
Billy Joel-Just the Way You Are vs. Billy Ocean - There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) (Both rather good songs, but Billy Joel gets the edge in this match up because of lyrics and not over singing)

ROUND 1 - DAY 1:

3 - The Outfield - Your Love vs. 11 - Peggy Lee - Fever...Oh Crap! The first pair of songs, in the first tournament I've been in for awhile, are both awesome! How can I decide?

3 - Don Henley - Boys of Summer vs. 7 - Extreme - More Than Words...Easy choice:)

6 - The Fureys And Davey Arthur - Sweet Sixteen vs. 1 - Roberta Flack-The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face...Both are good, familiarity wins out.

10 - Bananarama - Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye vs. 12 - Heartache Tonight - Eagles

10 - Dean Martin - Ain't That a Kick in the Head vs. 6 - Brothers Osborne - Stay A Little Longer...Yeah Deano.

7 - Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl vs. 6 - Dean Martin - Sway...It's Deano again.

8 - Ed Sheeran - Give Me Love vs. 15 - Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up.

While I'm listening to the songs, I was thinking that most of the songs in this tournament would make a great playlist on my mp3 player. :)

Speaking of, I normally run Love Songs on my "Now Playing" list from my Zune, before any other type of music, and I love at least a little bit of everything. Once I finished with my list of Valentine songs, this early morning, I placed the songs I nominated, on my now playing list. I wanted to make sure I added every last song to that list, so I counted them. I counted ten songs, and worried that you all would be sitting here, waiting on my return, so that I could delete one of the songs from my list of nominees. I could have swore I had this song on my list of nominated songs, but it looks like I deleted it. This was such a hard list to make. I could have used another 30 plus songs, so easily . . .

ROUND 1 - DAY 1:

3 - The Outfield - Your Love vs. 11 - Peggy Lee - Fever - An easy one for me. The first is ok but, even at three and a half minutes it starts to annoy me. Fever is classic gold, though.

3 - Don Henley - Boys of Summer vs. 7 - Extreme - More Than Words - TBH, I didn't even have to listen to either of these. I hate More Than Words. If this had been up against Be With You I'd have given up my right to vote.

6 - The Fureys And Davey Arthur - Sweet Sixteen vs. 1 - Roberta Flack-The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Another easy win. I was going to nominate this myself, but felt it was too long.

10 - Bananarama - Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye vs. 12 - Heartache Tonight - Eagles - Two songs I like, but its' still an easy win for the girls.

10 - Dean Martin - Ain't That a Kick in the Head vs. 6 - Brothers Osborne - Stay A Little Longer - The second is OK. It's inoffensive and forgettable.

7 - Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl vs. 6 - Dean Martin - Sway - I like the first, but this is a slam dunk.

8 - Ed Sheeran - Give Me Love vs. 15 - Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up - Like I was ever going to vote for Ed.

1 - Billy Joel-Just the Way You Are vs. 2 - Billy Ocean - There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) - Now this tie was tough. It's a shame one of these will go so early.

3 - The Outfield - Your Love vs. 11 - Peggy Lee - Fever - I know this is my nom but honestly there's no contest. Fever is such a sexy song, what's wrong with you people! ;)

3 - Don Henley - Boys of Summer vs. 7 - Extreme- More Than Words - two nice songs

6 - The Fureys And Davey Arthur - Sweet Sixteen vs. 1 - Roberta Flack-The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - very very hard choice. I thought I'd immediately vote for Roberta Flack as it's such a tender song but so is Sweet Sixteen. Listening twice to them both, I think Sweet Sixteen feels like a real love song for a real old couple with such a lot of nostalgic sentiment so I'm voting for it

10 - Bananarama - Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye vs. 12 - Heartache Tonight - Eagles - cos it's our Bananarama!

10 - Dean Martin - Ain't That a Kick in the Head vs. 6 - Brothers Osborne - Stay A Little Longer - Dean Martin - it's the better song

7 - Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl vs. 6 - Dean Martin - Sway - I always thought that Jessie's Song has a great melody, but has really creepy lyrics...I mean just go and get your own girlfriend! But besides that Sway is sexy and Dean Martin is so cool

8 - Ed Sheeran - Give Me Love vs. 15 - Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up - always thought this was a brilliant pop song no matter people always take the piss, it's still around so who has the last laugh?

1 - Billy Joel-Just the Way You Are vs. 2 - Billy Ocean - There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) - hard choice, but of the Billys I think Ocean has the heart

I'm generally very lenient on nominations fitting into the theme. I allowed people to decide what romance, heartbreak, Valentine's Day, etc. means to them. As long as it's close to the theme, I usually don't ask people to change their nominations unless someone complains about it. (And sometimes I don't even know the songs, so I don't take the time to look up the lyrics to every nomination that I don't know.)

4. Orange Colored Sky - Nat 'King' Cole (To be honest, I wasn't a fan of either song, so I chose the one I felt was more like a love song)

5. Chris DeBurgh - The Lady In Red (Both songs were great in very different ways, and it was difficult to compare the two, but this one had the slight edge)

6. Huey Lewis and the News - Power of Love (The other one was pretty decent, but it still paled a bit in comparison to this one )

7. Godley & Crème - Cry (Another difficult one, but this one was just closer to my tastes really)

8. Adele - Someone Like You (Love the woman, and this is one of my favourite songs by her)

I love the Dean Martin song Ain't That A Kick, but I just don't see it as a romantic song, or something I would sing or play to my wife on Valentine's Day. The same goes for Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley.
But as gb said, it's up to the nominator's taste and opinion of the song.

Mojo, Ain't That A Kick in the Head is about a whirl wind romance and the singer Deano is thrilled to be in love, but very overwhelmed by it, he's literally being swept off his feet, and he's not quiet sure that's what he wants. At least that's my take on it:p

You should never regret picking a song you like just because other people may not like it. If you like it, then you want to share it with the world, and that's a good reason to nominate it.

I regret nominating "So Sick". It's one of those filler songs I always put in because of my limited music catalog.

You should never regret picking a song you like just because other people may not like it. If you like it, then you want to share it with the world, and that's a good reason to nominate it.
The problem is, I don't really like it.

That's a shame because I liked it a lot. If there was a country version of "So Sick", I'd probably love it.

On a lighter note, did anyone else think of this version (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dPoz_ywhydI;t=27) when they saw Roberta Flack-The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Id_UYLPSn6U) nominated?

I'm a Believer - The Monkees (I'm a believer as been overplayed in song tournaments I give the other a chance.)
:( A) I wasn't around for all of the other tournaments to know if it had been overplayed in them. B) I haven't seen it nominated since I have been participating in these. C) Not that the other song shouldn't have a chance (it should), but it is kind of unfair to the person who nominated it if you are only basing your vote against it on it being overplayed in these. I'd much rather you didn't vote for it because you just didn't like it. That would make me feel better about its possible loss, actually. :)

It's too upbeat and loud to be a romantic ballad, though.
While I did nominate some ballads, I kind of prefer upbeat love songs over the ballads. I just do. If the definition of a love song is a ballad, well, I wish someone would've informed me because I could've gone crazy with nominating nothing but that. :) I think a lot of upbeat songs are romantic. It is all based on the lyric for me. And, honestly, I much prefer to be in a relationship that could be based on a good beat and happy tune over one that is slow and sappy all the time. :)

But if I were to say, though, what I think is THE MOST ROMANTIC love song of all-time is, it would be this one right here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I6s1J9ZSNw

I love the melody (and Frank's vocals are so perfect on this version), but most of all, what does it for me is those lyrics. They are incredibly romantic. If this was actually done as an upbeat song, it would be just as romantic to me. The only reason I didn't nominate this is because I figured that it wouldn't be all that popular. I know what music people prefer around here. :) So, I didn't really want to see the love song, that I think is the best one ever, lose in this tournament.

I just think it will be saved for that maybe "Old Fogey" tournament that might happen someday. ;)

It's actually pretty common for people to vote against a song because it's been nominated too often. It's not that people like the song any less. It's just that it tends to get boring hearing the same songs over and over again.

Unfortunately, without any kind of a "master list" of the previous nominations, it's almost impossible for new players to have any idea which songs are overplayed.

(But just for the record, I like the song "I'm A Believer", but I only voted against it because I liked the other song better. It was more in my wheelhouse. But if it had been Neil Diamond's version of "I'm A Believer", my vote might have gone the other way.)

I think there are some great upbeat love songs, but I don't consider them to be "romantic" love songs. However that wouldn't stop me from voting for them. The theme was "Love & Heartbreak Songs", not "Romance & Heartbreak Songs", so even upbeat love songs were well within the theme for this tournament.

I actually had two upbeat songs in my original eight nominations, but one was removed when we had to add a ninth song, and I couldn't choose between two romantic songs, so I removed one upbeat love song to make room for both romantic songs, and the other was removed when I gave up a song so Tugg could join. Hopefully I'll get a chance to nominate them in a later song tournament. (My original nominations list was not edited when I made changes, so if you're curious what songs were removed, they're still posted earlier in this thread somewhere.)

I love that Frank Sinatra song, and I wish you had nominated it in this tournament. I probably would have voted for it, as long as it didn't go up against one of my own noms.

And if enough people are interested in an "Old Fogey" tournament, you all need to speak up. I thought I was the only one interested in it, so I wasn't planning on actually having one. It was only a "wish list" thing for me.

10 - Cheap Trick - The Flame vs. 7 - Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing-I hate the Aerosmith song in a way because it's one of my favorite rock bands going soft. I still like it better here.

13 - Kelis - Caught Out There vs. 5 - Dan Fogelberg - Longer-I don't exactly love the second, but it's still a slaughter.

2 - The Carpenters - (They Long To Be) Close To You vs. 8 - Olsen Brothers - Fly on the Wings of Love (Alternate link for U.S.)-The Carpenters give me the creeps so this was close. I just prefer ballads for my love songs.

4 - Orange Colored Sky - Nat 'King' Cole vs. 12 - Leader of the Pack - Twisted Sister-Goodies listening to Twisted Sister by candlelight on Valentine's Day lol.

14 - Bon jovi ~ I'll Be There for You vs. 2 - Chris DeBurgh - The Lady In Red-Never been a big Lady in Red fan.

10 - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - You Got Lucky vs. 12 - Huey Lewis and the News - Power of Love-I'm not feeling either of these all that much, but I prefer the Petty song by a mile.

13 - Godley & Crème - Cry vs. 4 - I'm a Believer - The Monkees-I'm sick of hearing I'm a Believer, and I don't think it's that much of a love song, but I like it much more than the other.

Aersosmith doing cliched rock ballad? No, just no.
Kelis - Caught Out There vs. Dan Fogelberg - Longer

The Carpenters - (They Long To Be) Close To You vs. Olsen Brothers - Fly on the Wings of Love
"Fly on the Wings of Love" has interesting percussion, but it isn't enough to make me feel indifferent about the lead singer's voice
Orange Colored Sky - Nat 'King' Cole vs. Leader of the Pack - Twisted Sister

Bon jovi ~ I'll Be There for You vs. Chris DeBurgh - The Lady In Red

hmmm, romance is in the eye (or the ear) of the beholder! Personally I find all these soft rock love songs a bit dirge like. I like uptempo love songs, after all love is a joyous thing and something to be celebrated, and I also like very personal sad songs about love or breakup that seem like they're sung from the heart.

Round 1 - Day 2:

10 - Cheap Trick - The Flame vs. 7 - Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing

13 - Kelis - Caught Out There vs. 5 - Dan Fogelberg - Longer, Longer is a bit slushy for me but I love that Kelis song anyway, she's got spirit!

2 - The Carpenters - (They Long To Be) Close To You vs. 8 - Olsen Brothers - Fly on the Wings of Love (Alternate link for U.S.) Shame that Olsen Bros were up against The Carpenters cos it's a good song, but Close To You exudes class

4 - Orange Colored Sky - Nat 'King' Cole vs. 12 - Leader of the Pack - Twisted Sister - No contest with this one.

14 - Bon jovi ~ I'll Be There for You vs. 2 - Chris DeBurgh - The Lady In Red - Not keen on either. It was a struggle to decide

10 - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - You Got Lucky vs. 12 - Huey Lewis and the News - Power of Love

13 - Godley & Crème - Cry vs. 4 - I'm a Believer - The Monkees - I like Cry too, but love I'm a Believer

Basically it's old, mellow music. The stuff your parents, or your grandparents would listen to. Artists like Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Dean Martin, etc. Classic Broadway showtunes would probably fit into the description too.

I'm also open to suggestions about the definition. Like I said earlier, this was just kind of a "wish list" tournament for me because I'm tired of hearing so much metal and rap music, so I wanted something nice and mellow for a change. I never really expected any interest in it, so I never came up with a clear definition.

Those of us who are interested in it can work together to come up with a definition that we all agree on. I suggested the idea, but it's not just for me. It's for everyone who's interested in it.

5. Bryan Adams - Summer of 69 (My nom :D but the other song was very strong too)
6. Heart - Alone (Brutally tough as well, and as much as I love Bruce Springsteen, I just love this one a bit more. Both are amazing songs though )
7. Pretty Maids - Please Don't Leave Me (I loved this song, and I'm not just a very big country fan)
8. Harry Connick Jr - That's The Recipe For Making Love

I changed the link for the Dan Seals song "One Friend" because something sounded a little bit "off" at the beginning of the video. (It didn't sound that way when I first posted it, so maybe YouTube made the uploader change it for some reason.)

It's not different enough that anyone has to re-listen to it if you've already listened to it, but I noticed it because I've heard the song so many times before.

Round 1 - Day 3:

8 - Elton John - Your Song vs. 10 - My Dinner With Jimi, Turtles - Happy Together-Both great songs, but I am getting sick of hearing one of them.

4 - Woman - John Lennon vs. 6 - Rammstein - Ohne Dich-I thought the second was a great song, but so is the first which has the unfair advantage of already being a song I love.

14 - Martin Nievera & Regine Velasquez ~ Forever vs. 15 - Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time-I wouldn't quite call the 2nd a favorite, but it's a great one. The 1st was nice.

11 - Gladys Knight - Help Me Make it Through The Night vs. 4 - Everlasting Love - Carl Carlton-It sucks to have to vote against one of these.

9 - Earth Wind and Fire – I'll Write a Song for You vs. 3 - Bryan Adams - Summer of 69-I don't really like Summer of 69 as a love song, but I like the song much more overall. The first was still not bad.

13 - Heart - Alone vs. 11 - Bruce Springsteen - I'm on Fire-A great match, but I do have a preference.

5 - Dan Seals - One Friend vs. 8 - Pretty Maids - Please Don't Leave Me-Tough to pick between two good songs I never heard before.

9 - Chuck Berry - My Babe vs. 13 - Harry Connick Jr - That's The Recipe For Making Love-I like Connick Jr but I thought that song was a little corny.

Cheap Trick ~ The Flame vs. Aerosmith ~ I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing - I don't really like this, but I don't dislike it much either. Familiarity probably puts it through for me here.

Kelis ~ Caught Out There vs. Dan Fogelberg ~ Longer - Nice and easy for me.

The Carpenters ~ (They Long To Be) Close to You vs. Olsen Brothers ~ Fly on the Wings of Love - I'd have nominated this if I could've.

Nat King Cole ~ Orange Colored Sky vs. Twisted Sister ~ Leader of the Pack - Just no.

Bon Jovi ~ I'll Be There for You vs. Chris DeBurgh ~ Lady in Red - Up there with the other two songs I mentioned yesterday.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers ~ You Got Lucky vs. Huey Lewis and The News ~ Power of Love - I'd have nominated this had I remember it. :D

Godley & Crème ~ Cry vs. The Monkees ~ I'm a Believer - Going with my own here, but it's the toughest one of the round.

Ne-Yo ~ So Sick vs. Adele ~ Someone Like You - This is like being in front of two evil bastards and only having one bullet.

I just watch to remind people that this is a "LOVE & Heartbreak" tournament, not a "ROMANCE & Heartbreak" tournament.

Several people have commented that the Bryan Adams song "Summer of '69" doesn't fit the theme, but it does. If you listen to the lyrics, he's talking about how much he loved the Summer of '69, when he fell in love with a girl.

"Spent my evenings down at the drive-in
And that's when I met you, yeah

Standin' on your mama's porch
You told me that you'd wait forever
Oh, and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life"

You guys are all welcome to vote for or against a song based on your own criteria, but I just want to remind you that just because a song isn't "romantic", it doesn't mean that it's not about "love".

I also want to add that the person who nominated "Summer of '69" has offered to change the song. It's complicated to do that once the song has been posted in a match, and it's unfair to ask people to listen to another song and re-vote, but if enough people feel that you really don't believe that it fits the theme, and it should be changed, we can discuss the possibility of changing it. (I don't want this to become another fiasco, like what's going on in the B-movie HoF right now over the movie The Toxic Avenger.)

I think songs are different because one verse can mean something for someone, but then not mean anything to someone else. If I say I don't think a song fits the theme, I more or less mean for me personally. Power of Love for example; I think that's a song I don't find romantic because he's not singing about his love. Most songs you can find an angle though, but I think this theme is the most personal when it comes to feeling something.

Yeah, that's why I wanted to be lenient and allow people to choose songs that fit the theme based on their own personal interpretation of it.

I don't want to set any criteria for voting, but at the same time, I want this to be fair to everyone too. So please keep that in mind if and/or when you vote against a song that you think might not fit the theme.

I could nominate NIB or a thousand other hard rock songs for this tournament, but if someone else can't feel the love in it, it has to be understandable. I don't think anyone is saying a song isn't about love, but rather they're just not personally feeling the love in it, and I think that's an important criteria to judge these songs on.

Gladys Knight - Help Me Make it Through The Night vs. Everlasting Love - Carl Carlton ("Help Me Make it Through The Night" is pleasant to listen to, but it doesn't pack a punch like "Everlasting Love" does)
Earth Wind and Fire – I'll Write a Song for You vs. Bryan Adams - Summer of 69 (again, alrigh song vs. a great song in "Summer of 69" which is sureley one of the best songs by Bryan Adams)"
Heart - Alone vs. Bruce Springsteen - I'm on Fire ("Alone" might as well win this tournament as far as I'm concerned)
Dan Seals - One Friend vs. Pretty Maids - Please Don't Leave Me ("One Friend" has the edge because of lyrics and slightly better melody)
Chuck Berry - My Babe vs. Harry Connick Jr - That's The Recipe For Making Love ("My Babe" sounds cool, but it is too repetitive and starts to become anoying by the end of it's 2 minutes run time, so I would rather listen to up beat and fun "That's The Recipe For Making Love")

I don't think CiCi should change Summer of '69. Once the tournament has started that means that the person running it has accepted that in their view the songs chosen match the criteria. Whether they do in all the participants eyes is besides the point. To me Summer of 69 is about looking back on friendship and young love.

There seemed to be a few comments about that song not fitting into the theme of "romance", so I posted the question to find out how everyone here felt about it, and to remind everyone that the theme is about "love", and not just about "romance". We all interpreted the theme in our own way, so it's unfair to vote against a song just because it doesn't fit into a very narrow interpretation of the theme.

I agree that the song shouldn't be changed, especially now that it's been posted in a match, but hopefully now people will be a bit more lenient about the theme when they vote.

I think the conversation about Summer Of '69 is rather moot tbh - the tournament has started and it is already up for voting so imo it cannot be changed now anyway. As to whether or not it fits the theme I think in some ways it's a subjective theme so that has to be up to each individual to determine - as it does with each and every other nomination in the tournament.

I'm sure every participant regards each and every one of their own nominations as fitting the theme in some way or another, whether or not others concur with that is a valid part of the voting process imo - for instance I very much regard my nomination Lately as a song about certain facets of love but others may not see irrational jealousy, insecurity in the relationship, fear of losing someone etc. as fitting thematically and I'd have no problem at all with that.

Elton John - Your Song vs. My Dinner With Jimi, Turtles - Happy Together - I do love Happy Together but I've always thought that Your Song is a proper real love song

Woman - John Lennon vs. Rammstein - Ohne Dich - Not heard that Rammstein song before, but a song that has 'woe is me' in the lyrics can't be ignored! It's so portentous, I love it. I'm not right keen on Woman, it's a bit grovelling.

Martin Nievera & Regine Velasquez ~ Forever vs. Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time - Forever is too slushy for me, and I've always liked Cindi

Gladys Knight - Help Me Make it Through The Night vs. Everlasting Love - Carl Carlton - I could've voted for Everlasting Love - great song, but Help Me is my song and it gives me the shivers Gladys's voice is so tremendous

Earth Wind and Fire – I'll Write a Song for You vs. Bryan Adams - Summer of 69 -

Heart - Alone vs. Bruce Springsteen - I'm on Fire - Alone is a good song, but I'm On Fire is a dirty sexy song and I love it

Dan Seals - One Friend vs. Pretty Maids - Please Don't Leave Me - Not heard either of these before, but I liked One Friend much more, it's a lovely song

Martin Nievera & Regine Velasquez ~ Forever vs. Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time - Time After Time is just a great song. I do tire of it quite quickly, though. If I keep hearing it over the next week or two I might vote against it.

Gladys Knight - Help Me Make it Through The Night vs. Everlasting Love - Carl Carlton - Not my favourite version of this, but it's more my thing.

Earth Wind and Fire – I'll Write a Song for You vs. Bryan Adams - Summer of 69 - Like both. Prefer this one.

Heart - Alone vs. Bruce Springsteen - I'm on Fire - Not a fan of The Boss, not that I hate his stuff, but Alone is a great song.

Dan Seals - One Friend vs. Pretty Maids - Please Don't Leave Me - Coin toss.

Chuck Berry - My Babe vs. Harry Connick Jr - That's The Recipe For Making Love - This was the first song which came to mind when this was announced. Even before I'd thought about whether I'd be in it or not.

Yay, I finally won a coin toss. :)

But sadly this may still be a case of winning the battle, but losing the war. :(

Glad to put a smile on your face, gbg. :) I was happy to put either of those through because it really was an either/or choice, for me.

1. Lionel Richie ~ The Only One (Both were great, but I prefer Lionel's voice a little bit more)
2. Nazareth - Love Hurts (I loved it, a lot more than I thought I would too )
3. Jacques Brel - Ne Me Quitte Pas (it's the language of love for a reason )
4. Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan - Especially for You (I'm a Kylie fan )
5. Faith Hill - There You'll Be (My nom, and it would be up against an amazing song. Both are big favourites of mine)
6. Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline (Both are more or less classics now, but this one is so infectious!)
7. Led Zeppelin – All my Love (Being brutally honest, I wasn't too keen on either song, I just slightly preferred this one)
8. Kim Wilde - You Came (I like Aerosmith, but this song was terrific!)
I also do deeply apologise for any inconveniences/drama I caused before, I certainly never intended it, and I'll do my best to ensure it won't happen again! :)

Round 1 - Day 4:

2 - The Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love vs. 14 - Lionel Richie ~ The Only One-The Richie song was nice.

5 - Tracy Byrd - Keeper Of The Stars vs. 7 - Nazareth - Love Hurts-Not a lot of rock songs I feel in this way, but Love Hurts is one of them. I liked the other a good amount.

14 - England Dan & John Ford Coley ~ Love is the Answer vs. 11 - Jacques Brel - Ne Me Quitte Pas-I didn't like the first in the beginning, but it grew on me a little. I just think the second one sounded better.

5 - Kenny Rogers - Buy Me A Rose vs. 15 - Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan - Especially for You-I thought they were both decent, but I'm not a fan of the type of sound the second one has.

3 - Faith Hill - There You'll Be vs. 8 - Whitesnake - Is this love-The Hill song was pretty good to be voting against.

10 - Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline vs. 11 - Nathalie Imbruglia - Torn-They play Sweet Caroline at every Red Sox game, so I've been sick of it for a long time. Even before that, I was more of a Cracklin' Rosie guy.

9 - Led Zeppelin – All my Love vs. 2 - Mr. Big - To Be With You-I've always liked both of these, but neither does a whole lot for me anymore.

9 - Aerosmith – Love in an Elevator vs. 15 - Kim Wilde - You Came (Alternate link for U.S.)-I don't think of the first at all as a love song, but I like it so much more than the other.

Damn, more times than not, that thing matches my song up with a really famous group. It's not like Dionne Warwick isn't known, but The Bee Gees, yet again. I've already lost to them once.

p.s. Chypmunk, you seem to hate every last song I've nominated. :(

p.s.s. I'm not really upset, but don't go thinking I didn't see your remark on that birthday post you made yesterday. ;)

Oh my God, you just voted for my song. How cool was that?!? :p

2 - The Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love vs. 14 - Lionel Richie ~ The Only One

5 - Tracy Byrd - Keeper Of The Stars vs. 7 - Nazareth - Love Hurts - I'm not mad on either really, but I'm obviously not a absolute romantic as I'm finding a lot of the slow ballads way too schmaltzy

14 - England Dan & John Ford Coley ~ Love is the Answer vs. 11 - Jacques Brel - Ne Me Quitte Pas..seriously? how are you voting against Jacques? I even put an English subs version on there for you. No accounting for taste!

5 - Kenny Rogers - Buy Me A Rose vs. 15 - Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan - Especially for You - I like the sentiment of the KEnny Rogers song, but Kylie and Jason will always hold a special place in most Brits hearts

3 - Faith Hill - There You'll Be vs. 8 - Whitesnake - Is this love

10 - Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline vs. 11 - Nathalie Imbruglia - Torn - I'm going with my choice as I love it a lot but I would've voted for Neil against most of the other songs in this round
9 - Led Zeppelin – All my Love vs. 2 - Mr. Big - To Be With You - two good one but Led Zep just takes it

9 - Aerosmith – Love in an Elevator vs. 15 - Kim Wilde - You Came (Alternate link for U.S.)

11 - Stay With Me Baby - Lorraine Ellison vs. 4 - I Could Write a Book - Harry Connick, Jr.-I don't recall hearing that first one before; I thought it was brilliant.

7 - The Beatles - Something (Alternate link for U.S.) vs. 2 - Kool & The Gang - Cherish-Love Kool & The Gang, but never really cared for that song. The other will be tough to beat.

1 - The Bee Gees-To Love Somebody vs. 14 - Dionne Warwick & Kashif ~ Reservations for Two-Never been a Warwick fan while I've loved the other since I was a child when my parents used to play it.

13 - Shakespeare Sister - You're History (Alternate link for U.S.) vs. 11 - The Foundations - Build Me Up Buttercup-I like these about the same, but lean towards the 2nd for the purpose of this tourney.

12 - Beth - KISS vs. 8 - The Seekers - I'll Never Find Another You-I love Kiss, but Beth has never done anything for me. I liked that other one.

10 - Frank Sinatra - Witchcraft vs. 14 - Damn Yankees ~ High Enough-I liked that 2nd one but I thought it sounded a little generic.

2 - Kenny Rogers - Lady vs. 13 - Marc Almond & Gene Pitney - Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart-I enjoyed the 2nd but it's up against a great one.

4 - More Today Then Yesterday - Spiral Starecase vs. 9 - Sugarcube – Hit-For some strange reason, I always thought that first song was sung by Stevie Wonder. I liked the other a good amount as well.

I've certainly nothing against it but for me it pales against something like Stay With Me Baby for instance (as do lots of others) as that one just contains so much passion in it's delivery (can you tell I really wish I'd remembered that one for my nominations :().

Round 1 - Day 4:

2 - The Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love vs. 14 - Lionel Richie ~ The Only One - This was always going to be a tough match up.

5 - Tracy Byrd - Keeper Of The Stars vs. 7 - Nazareth - Love Hurts - If the first wasn't so country or, maybe, even a little shorter this might've been a tougher choice for me.

14 - England Dan & John Ford Coley ~ Love is the Answer vs. 11 - Jacques Brel - Ne Me Quitte Pas - Almost a coin toss. I don't know if I'd have preferred the second in English or not. Probably not.

5 - Kenny Rogers - Buy Me A Rose vs. 15 - Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan - Especially for You - Another song I've thought about nominating for various tournaments.

3 - Faith Hill - There You'll Be vs. 8 - Whitesnake - Is this love - I'm more of a fan of the video than the song, so familiarity is probably taking this over the line for me. The other one was OK, though.

10 - Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline vs. 11 - Nathalie Imbruglia - Torn - Love this song. I think I nominated it for the 90's tournament.

9 - Led Zeppelin – All my Love vs. 2 - Mr. Big - To Be With You - It isn't To Be With You.

9 - Aerosmith – Love in an Elevator vs. 15 - Kim Wilde - You Came (Alternate link for U.S.) - I don't think it really goes with the theme, but it's allowed and it's the better song.

I was saying that many of the songs nominated didn't sound like love or heartbreak songs to me. Personally, when I think of love/heartbreak/romantic songs, I think of low to mid-tempo songs with lyrics that express an extreme adoration of a female or male figure, depending on the gender of the one who is singing, and/or feelings of agony for not being around that love figure.
It was just my opinion. I was not dictating the nature of this tournament.
Can we drop this already and move on? I promise I will not make anymore controversial statements, at least not intentionally.

Round 1 - Day 5:

11 - Stay With Me Baby - Lorraine Ellison vs. 4 - I Could Write a Book - Harry Connick, Jr. . Prob couldn't not like anything Harry Connick Jnr did, but if you're talking breakup songs then Lorraine Ellison has the rawest, most heartbreaking of all. That woman is prepared to go down on her knees to keep her man and my heart always goes out to her no matter how many hundreds of times I've heard it

7 - The Beatles - Something (Alternate link for U.S.) vs. 2 - Kool & The Gang - Cherish I prefer Kool and the Gang's funky stuff, but besides that Something is a better song

1 - The Bee Gees-To Love Somebody vs. 14 - Dionne Warwick & Kashif ~ Reservations for Two

13 - Shakespeare Sister - You're History (Alternate link for U.S.) vs. 11 - The Foundations - Build Me Up Buttercup I like You're History, but I've always loved Build Me Up Buttercup

12 - Beth - KISS vs. 8 - The Seekers - I'll Never Find Another You - The Beth video made me laugh - it was supposed to right? but there's something sweet and innocent about The Seekers, always was. Maybe it's Judith Durham's pure voice but I like it anyway.

10 - Frank Sinatra - Witchcraft vs. 14 - Damn Yankees ~ High Enough = anything drawn against Ol Blue Eyes will have a hard time, specially such a fantastic song in a brilliant Nelson Riddle arrangement, just great!

2 - Kenny Rogers - Lady vs. 13 - Marc Almond & Gene Pitney - Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart - This was hard cos Kenny Rogers reminds me of my mum, she loved him a lot, but then Somethings Gotten Hold of My Heart reminds me of her too. This version is good, I like the two great voices together.

4 - More Today Then Yesterday - Spiral Starecase vs. 9 - Sugarcube – Hit - I've never heard of Spiral Starecase before, liked them

Lorraine Ellison ~ Stay With Me Baby vs. I Could Write a Book ~ Harry Connick, Jr. - Connick's songs just sound perfect for this kind of theme!

The Beatles ~ Something (Alternate link for U.S.) vs. Kool & The Gang ~ Cherish - Both songs are amazing. I'll go with the song I nominated.

The Bee Gees ~ To Love Somebody vs. Dionne Warwick & Kashif ~ Reservations for Two - Bee Gees all the way
