View Full Version : My Favorite Music Videos

Thanks to a little something cable television introduced in the early 80's called MTV, a new marketing concept for the music industry was born with a video called "Video Killed the Radio Star" when, in reality, radio experienced a renaissance because music videos gave new life to the recording industry. Couch potatoes saw a video that appealed to them and it made them want to go out and buy the record. The secret in an effective music video is picking a correct concept that will enhance the appeal of the recording. Sometimes, a song doesn't need a lot of help and a video of the artists performing the song in front of a camera is enough. Sometimes a song needs a concept or a story behind the video to make the song a little easier to understand. If the song is part of a motion picture score, sometimes the video will simply consist of clips from the movie. Whatever concept is chosen, the music video revitalized the music industry and thanks to the internet and web sites like You Tube, records that were recorded before the 1980's now have videos, but I will try to keep from those here. I will also try to steer away from the videos that are just movie clips. This will be look at videos where an original concept, however simple or elaborate it might be or songs that I like and the video stayed out of the way. WARNING: If you are not a fan of Madonna or Michael Jackson, you should just stay away from this thread because these two artists took this relatively new entertainment form and completely reinvented it and a large portion of this thread will be devoted to them. So grab your earphones and prepare for my list of my favorite music videos:

I'm not a fan of Madonna, but I like some of Michael Jackson's songs. I probably won't agree with a lot of this list because I listen mostly to country music and showtunes, but as always, I'll be following your list. :)

"Under Pressure", Queen & David Bowie

Technically, this isn't a video, but a straight performance of a song that doesn't need a lot of help in terms of video concept.

"How Does it Feel?", D'Angelo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxVNOnPyvIU

They say sex sells and this video was a test of that...the allure of a man appearing naked on camera made this video a classic.

No, there aren't many Broadway videos, but there are a few good ones from some shows that have either been released on DVD or aired on PBS, and a few from the TV show "SMASH". That's probably the closest we'll get to some good Broadway videos.

"That's the Way Love Goes", Janet Jackson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac0eU-wHuGg

I love the simple concept of this video...Janet and her posse just chillin at the crib...in case you didn't notice, one of Janet's "homies" in this video is Jennifer Lopez.

"I'm Burnin' Up", Madonna

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pufec0Hps00&list=RDpufec0Hps00#t=0

Madonna makes her first appearance on this list with the video for her first major dance club hit...I actually remember dancing to this tune in clubs.

"Heartbreak Hotel", Whitney Houston

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEmdW3_bi4c&list=RDxEmdW3_bi4c#t=0

This was one of the unsung heroes in Whitney's videography...quietly sexy, Whitney has rarely looked better, with an assist from Faith Evans and Kelly Price.

"Straight Up", Paula Abduhl

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El1kgCqD7Xk

Abduhl was actually a viable talent before settling into American Idol and this was the song that put her on the map...love that she utilized her dancing talent and the black and white photography is striking.

"Hello", Lionel Richie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84RxK4N1wfE

"That's What Friends are For", Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK6mUJZYcVU

Videos became so popular that that at times they were used as fundraisers...if memory serves, all profits from this video went to AIDS research...no frills here, just four music legends jamming on a great song.

"Physical", Olivia Newton John

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWz9VN40nCA

"Dancin in the Street", Mick Jagger and David Bowie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G4jnaznUoQ

Two legends cover an old Martha and the Vandellas tune...you don't have to do a lot for a video with these two...just let the camera roll and let them do what they do best. I've always been of the belief that right after these two shot this video, they had sex.

There are several schools of thought as to what it means to "bop", but those arguments aside, this loopy, off-the-wall video is a winner.

"Open Your Heart", Madonna

"Remember the Time", Michael Jackson

"Sweet Dreams", The Eurhythmics

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeMFqkcPYcg

The creep factor of this video is a little disturbing, but it didn't deter the song from putting the Eurhythmics on the map...and no woman has ever worn a man's suit the way Annie Lennox does.

"We are the World", Various Artists

I prefer "Do They Know It's Christmas?" over "We Are The World" but I like both.

I gotta say -- if I made a music video thread like this, most of these songs would be included in it.

"Control" and "I'm Still Standing" were songs I included in the Getting to Know You Song Tournament, where we picked songs that we felt said something about us personally. And "Sunglasses at Night" was a song I didn't use for that, but strongly considered.

This is another example of a video not getting in the way of a great song and great artist. When Tina performed this song at the Grammys that year, the late John Denver introduced her as "the woman who taught all other women how to walk in high heels."

Whilst I think Vogue is the better video, there's no doubt that Like A Prayer is my favourite Madonna song.

"Take On Me", Ah Ha

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKspel3BEog

This video scores for imagination and for state of the art video technique and makes the song seem a lot better than it is.

A-ha's "Take On Me" video is one of my all-time favorite music videos. It might even be my #1 favorite if I ever made a list like this, (that didn't include country music videos).

"She works Hard for the Money", Donna Summer

The late Disco Queen had more than her share of top 40 smashes, but this is the only video that I think is worthy of this list.

"When I think of You", Janet Jackson

This video is colorful and atmospheric...the choreography is wonderful and Janet really seems to be enjoying herself. And the song RULES!!!!

"Girls Just Wanna HaveFun", Cyndi Lauper

The song that put Lauper on the map...this video is so much fun and so is the song...love Captain Lou Albano as Cyndi's dad.

"Live To Tell", Madonna

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axak5QvlHSU

I was going to try to avoid videos that consisted of clips from movies, but I had to include this one because this song is positively haunting and it was refreshing to see Madonna utilize nothing but vocal technique to sell a song and she knocks it out of the park.

"Thriller", Michael Jackson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA

Bet you thought this was going to be # 1, huh? It was when I began this countdown but I decided I like one video better, but there is no denying the monstrous technical achievement this video is. Directed by John Landis (Trading Places) and choreographed by Michael Peters, this was the art of music videos at its zenith and the likes of which we will never see again.

Okay, down to # 2 now...As always, this is my opinion and my opinion only...drum roll, please...and now my #1 favorite music video:

"Beat It", Michael Jackson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRdxUFDoQe0

Scoff if you must, but this is my favorite music video...the song, concept, and Michael's choreography. One of the dancers in this video is Michael DeLorenzo of the Fox series New York Undercover, who was also a dancer in the 1980 musical Fame.

Hope you enjoyed the list.

"Straight Up", Paula Abduhl

Abduhl was actually a viable talent before settling into American Idol and this was the song that put her on the map...love that she utilized her dancing talent and the black and white photography is striking.

Thanks for creating this fun, fun, fun thread, Gideon! Can't BELIEVE I didn't drop in earlier. I loved this song & video ever since it came out. It was '89 I think...Wow, that woman has beat in her, she can move, she can dance. I was even in love with her for a while. So Sexy, Material Girl not withstanding, what did you think of the list?
I think it's great. For the most part, it's like a peek inside my own mind on what are great music videos. My earliest memories of life are watching MTV in the '80s and constantly seeing these songs when they were new. And waiting for them to play again and getting excited when suddenly they were on. I can remember seeing some songs when they first debuted on MTV. I loved it then. But then when music styles changed in the '90s, a lot of my interest in it went away.

Well...according to an albeit highely unreliable source they did do it. I heard they both said so. As we all know, they were both bisexual.

Very nice list, Gideon! I'll admit that I'm not a huge fan of Madonna, but I do like a lot of her videos. Michael Jackson, I love his music and especially his videos, and you picked several of my favorites, including Bad, Scream, Thriller, and especially Beat It, which is my favorite Michael Jackson song and video.

And those videos helped send Weird Al Yankovic's career into the straosphere...or at least the atmosphere. :)

"She Bop", Cyndi Lauper

There are several schools of thought as to what it means to "bop", but those arguments aside, this loopy, off-the-wall video is a winner.

Ah! I LOVE her! I am in looovvvee now I need to put myself together. The entire She's So Unusual album totally rocks or pops or bops or whatever. I couldn't believe it. It's hard to find an album like that, that's great continuously start to finish. I mean, I really love her anyway. My fave:

"Under Pressure", Queen & David Bowie

Technically, this isn't a video, but a straight performance of a song that doesn't need a lot of help in terms of video concept.

Maybe a bit of info that I learned last summer or spring watching a Queen documentary. It was in fact the bassist John Deacon who came up with those first notes dumdudmdudmdumdumduuumdum. Messing on his bass guitar or whatever. But then he went away and forgot it! But the drummer Roger Taylor remembered it and ...the rest is history.

Ah, the memories...When I first saw this in '83 or '84, we were still living in the centre of the town. It was filmed in Cannes, right? i like that instrumental part when everyone's showing just how French they are.
