What's you view of social media and constant drama that comes with it. Could forums become popular again because of it?

I think social media is a diversion. Instead of civil disobedience, people will opt for a lazy "LIKE" and try to pander to get them. "See how well-intentioned I am?"
Plus, the "I'm here to express myself" is usually bunk - 99% of what I read is neutral (neutered) and sanitized. No one wants to rock any boat, still concerned what someone from high school might think.
It's nothing but a big data mining collecting center, where a kid can make billions of dollars from the people. You probably won't hear "Remember ten years ago when we were on Facebook?"

I thought for sure this was going to be an Ace90 thread:p
So look, video killed the radio star, and Facebook killed the .com forums. But I'm happy this place exist.:)

My view of it is that I prefer the more enclosed forums such as this, and I'm enjoying being on Movie Forums as I think it's a very positive atmosphere. I recently left a forum and fan community having been part of it for a number of years as I couldn't stand the negativity and hostility of the majority of its members.
As far as the more public social media goes, I get the impression it can be pretty toxic and I steer well clear of it.

I love message boards though. There are no local movie groups, or any interest groups around here, so there's not much choice but to go online...
It's like an individual who wants to find a woman.. If 99% of women only go to bars or dating sites, you really don't have many choices if you're a romantic who likes random precision.

Social Media is a safe space. Forums are edgier.

I grew up posting on Forums, I've met a lot of really cool people throughout the years on them, and learned some good stuff. I have always thought that forums are just a better means of discussion than sending pokes and wall posts, aside from that I've never been a fan of Facebook, I preferred Myspace because of bands pages and the fact that they could post music and stuff. Every forum I've ever been active on except this is long shut down and it's kind of disheartening to know that I probably won't have the pleasure of seeing a bustling forum with a couple hundred active users at least again.. Oh well.

That's interest Foster, can you explain why you say that?

I am somewhat willing to do more comments sections and even social media type things as soon as those things have bigger avatars like 150x150 pixels.

On my trip to SF, I hung out with a guy I talked with on imdb - turns out he's an editor at the SF Chronicle, which was responsible elevating the career of Mort Sahl, the reason I went to SF... I think it started with Cassavetes and again with the film "The Swimmer" and we were both surprised someone replied to the message board on there. So I planned to hang out, and I learn he's only 2 stops away on the train. We walked , hung out at his place, listened to music (lots of similar taste) saw a bunch of movies, talked for about 4 hours, even had time to go to the local library and talk about each movie. I love message boards, but I would love to have movie friends around the corner for a chat in person.
A problem inherent with any kind of text (social media, phone messages) is the amount of misunderstandings. Of course, people won't say anything until it's too late. At least with voice you can better identify tone, sarcasm. Just a few octave changes in the voice can make all the difference.
That's interest Foster, can you explain why you say that?
For 95% of people on social media -
If someone keeps posting annoying **** all the time or really asinine opinions they will get unfriended. If someone says a bunch of bad stuff about you they will get unfriended. This creates a safe space where it's only positive and like minded people that you interact with.
In contrast, on forums, most people don't use the block functionality. Also you have family and **** on Facebook, so most people don't troll like they would on a forum.

I don't troll, but I antagonize people indirectly by what I say about religion, politics, society. I just want responses, and sometimes I just wanna rub events in. Sometimes I'll post "I'm bored, any1 wanna have sex?"
