Thank you Doctor Soup for (unintentionally) reminding me to post this!

I've done this on another forum and thought it would be really cool to try here.

The only flaw I can think of for this forum is that there would be more interest in foreign actors that are not on the list. I don't really know a solution for this, but if anyone has an idea just let me know.

(copy pasted description from other forum)
-----
As we all know, Hollywood is a scary place with money hungry producers and scummy talent agents and overpaid movie star actors and actresses. This "Make a Movie Draft" is not just about creating a movie you would enjoy - its also about creating a movie others will watch and finding cast and crew who will work for you within your budget.

Your goal in this Make a Movie Draft is up to you, as always. You may want to create a big budget superhero movie or a small arthouse film or an Oscar bait period piece. But the decisions you make will effect other decisions you can make in the areas of casting, budgeting, writing, etc.

Awards: Films will be judged in the following categories (by the rest of the forum members).

-Box office flop/success (each film)

- Best film
- Highest grossing film
- Most entertaining film
- Favorite performance

- Most likely to win the Academy Award for Best Picture
- Most likely to win the Academy Award for Best Director
- Most likely to win the Academy Award for Best Actor
- Most likely to win the Academy Award for Best Actress
- Most likely to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor
- Most likely to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress

Draft: You will draft the following cast and crew members.

1 Director
1 Writer
1 Executive Producer (if you can't think of producers here (http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/02/28/interactive-hollywood-s-50-greatest-producers-of-all-time.html) is a helpful list)
1 Composer (optional)
8 Actors (minimum)

In addition, you may draft the adaptation rights to a series, book, or real life event. There will be 12 rounds.

Budget: You will have $45 million to spend on your cast and crew. If your producer has had a film gross over $500 million in the past decade, or has been nominated for multiple Best Pictures, you get an additional $5 million in budget. If your director has been nominated for an Academy Award and has never produced a big budget (budget over $50 million) film, Tier 1 and Tier 2 stars will work for $10 million. If you are adapting a major film franchise (film in this franchise has grossed over $100 million) you have an additional $5 million in budget. Your expenses are:

-- $2 million per actor unless the actor is listed below, in which case you pay the salary listed below. After the draft you may sign additional undrafted actors for $500,000 per actor.

-- $2 million for a writer (if your director has writing credits on a feature film, this is optional)

-- $1 million for a composer, unless that composer has won an Academy Award for Best Original Score (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Original_Score), in which case s/he will cost $2 million. If you choose not to draft a composer, you will pay $1 million for a popular music score.

Producers and directors work for free, as they get a sizable cut of the box office receipts.

*Note: Director must have had atleast 1 feature length film in the past 5 years (and be alive) to be eligible for drafting.

Actors salaries are based on the Vulture 100 movie stars list, which I broke into four tiers (first 20, next 30, next 30, final 20).

It's certainly a little late to implement a new category since it would probably throw the whole system off but a Cinematographer would be an interesting choice to add to the mix. And how do Executive Producer's work, they just seem to bring in more money if you choose them early on I'm guessing? Also I'm failing to see how not picking a writer effects you, in fact it just saves you money if you think the director can do a good enough job.

The Executive Producers would work with people voting. If there are weak producers/directors then people would probably vote that it'd be most likely a flop.

Bump again!

What do you guys think about the actors not listed and their pricing. Should we keep it as it is or find something to help make it more accurate for foreign/lesser known guys.

CiCi
01-26-16, 06:27 PM
Possibly add the most profitable actors from other Anglophone countries?
Like a fixed price for the top ten British, Canadian, Australian etc. actors/actresses who haven't already appeared on that list.

Then for foreign actors, I guess you could the most profitable ten by continent?

seanc
01-26-16, 06:29 PM
Up to you Cole, I'm fine either way. How are you going to work the draft?

We can make a new thread or keep it here. It'd be serpentine and you can choose any person each round... there isn't designated rounds for each job.

Alright. How in depth do you want us to go once the contest starts? Is it kind of up to us or so you have a basic outline of what you want?

Here's some examples from a previous one that was run.

Frank Herbert's Dune:

http://theepicbeyond.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Dune-Image-580x333.png

Set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which noble houses, in control of individual planets, owe allegiance to the Padishah Emperor, Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides, whose noble family accepts the stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis. As this planet is the only source of the "spice" melange, the most important and valuable substance in the universe, control of Arrakis is a coveted — and dangerous — undertaking. The story explores the multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the forces of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its "spice".[5]

Trivia

*Ben Foster will reunite with director Duncan Jones after starring in Duncan's upcoming World of Warcraft film.
*Paul Dano and DDL will share the screen again, except this time Dano's character helps get the best of DDL.
*Speaking of, Daniel Day-Lewis plays Leto Atreides, who is betrayed by Wellington Yueh and dies very early in the film. He's still an important figure and has several important scenes.
*Speaking of early deaths, Chris Evans as Duncan Idaho also dies early after going full BA and taking out a BUNCH of enemies in a heroic sacrifice. Duncan Idaho, however, returns in every Dune sequel and is a central figure in each novel after the first. My favorite fictional character possibly ever.
*Duncan Jones is David Bowie's son. David Bowie will play a small, yet important role.
*Helen Mirren will play her role completely bald.
*Dave Bautista plays a man with essentially no brain, but is a major villain.
*Gary Oldman plays Gurney Halleck, a trusted member of House Atreides. He's a warrior, but also a troubadour, which means he will have some singing duties in the film. Not to worry, however, as Gary Oldman - the greatest actor alive - is also a tremendously talented singer. He just so happened to sing a duet with David Bowie, and he also starred in a music video from Bowie's most recent musical release.

Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven the duo that brought The Dark Knight series to the Silver screen announce their latest project featuring a score from Hans Zimmer...

Plot

Brilliant Scientist Baxter Stockman and his assistant April O'Neil have developed have devloped a new pest control innovation, "Mousers"!. These machines hunt and destroy rat's and should help curtail the rodent population in New York City. But these machines could lead to other discoveries in the vast and dark New York sewer system.

As the weeks pass across town multiple banks have been broken into from the inside through tiny under ground tunnels. Could there be a link between this and the mousers? Is the scientist Baxter not Stockman quite what he seems? What other creatures live in the sewers underneath New York?

This is kind of tempting just because of these two things that were said:
an Oscar bait period piece
And
you may draft the adaptation rights to a series, book
I could really take advantage of something like this. :yup:

But I just don't know if I have the energy to be creative enough to join in.

How much time do you want to allow for a person to make a decision about joining?

Cole416
01-30-16, 11:22 AM

I'd like to keep this at 8-10 max, so until it fills up you have time.

So after the 12 rounds of drafts, if you have money left over can you get additional actors on a first come first serve basis? I think reading through the posts here I have the hang of most of it.

I think the pricing should be fine for now, see how it goes this time round and if everything goes well can expand it in future?

Cole416

Sure. That leaves us with 8. I can either start the draft now with no time limits until Friday, or I can wait (so more people can sign up if they want to) until Friday or sometime next weekend to start with a timed draft.

DrSoup007
01-31-16, 07:57 PM
I'm more in favor of the timed draft, which Friday would it be?

Daniel M
01-31-16, 08:00 PM
If we started now, and just did it in order, we could probably get most of it done by Friday, and then whatever's left can be timed? I don't mind really, is the first order going to be just the order of sign ups in the first post?

Cole416
01-31-16, 08:01 PM

Yeah that could work, waiting would just allow some people to sign up if they didn't see it. But I'm sure most of the people interested have already seen it so we can get started now if we want.

Highest budget $50m and nominated for Moonrise Kingdom, Budapest, Mr. Fox, and Tenenbaums. So yeah, tier 1 and 2 work for less. He'll be a free writer, but since he only has one Best Picture nom he wont get the additional $5m budget.

This might be recency bias but I have to go with Paul Thomas Anderson. My favorite director would be Fincher, but he doesnt have enough writing/screenplay ability for me. I'd rather a guy I can double dip with and I doubt PTA would be around next round for me.

Okay, I'm gonna grab my director, like most of you schlubs. I'm picking Alexander Payne for his skilled character building and clever story writing.

Ok guys, sorry for not updating. Lets do this.

Sean you're up with 2 picks.

Nearly 3 rounds done. I say no skips until round 7 and then we speed it up. Thoughts?

It's tough to get picks in with the major talent but once we get to 7-ish, you should be picking character actors or composers and I doubt it'll be as hard as picking yalls A-list leads and directors.

02-21-16, 02:53 PM
J.K. Simmons

Gatsby

If a film is released based on my idea, it will probably be a box office bomb and get panned by critics, but after a decade or so film buffs will say otherwise and make it into a cult classic. :)
