View Full Version : Extreme Music Tournament (caution: ears may bleed)

Zotis
01-21-16, 01:40 AM
Okay, so here are the official rules:
Every round each participant may nominate 4 songs.
Everyone participating will listen to all of the songs and rank them giving 1 point to the lowest ranked song, 2 points to the next song, 3 points to the song after that, and so on.
No one may nominate a song by any band that has already been nominated by anyone else on a first come, first serve basis.
Everyone will have 24 hours per round. Anyone who doesn't submit a list that round or vote that round misses the opportunity.
Anyone can join in at any time, but any submission that does not qualify as "extreme music" by the parameters below will not count.
I'm not going to chase people. If you aren't sure if something qualifies then ask me. If anyone submits something by accident that doesn't qualify and I let them know and they don't change it in time, too bad. Any points people give it won't count.
People only need to give points to the songs they like. You can simply not list anything you don't want to list, but just remember that points go in ascending order so the more you list the more points your top listed songs get too.
Having fun isn't a rule, it's a personal choice. Feel free to not have any fun if you want.
The 24 hours per round starts at midnight.
I will edit this post with the list of songs nominated, and the scores, so keep checking back.
After 8 rounds the 16 songs that were the winner and runner up of each round will be entered into a straight single elimination bracket.
Don't vote for your own nominations.

I hope that isn't too complicated for people.

First of all I would just like to say thank you to Sexy Celebrity for doing the Metalheads Song Tournament, and so speedily too. You did a great job. With it approaching the final round I think it's a good time to also start this up. I won't be going at as fast a pace as SC, and I have no idea how few entrants we'll have. I heard from 5-6 people who were interested, including myself. We'll see if anyone else joins. I'll be taking applications now, but we also may need to discuss what perimeters exactly the ambiguous term "Extreme Music" is going to have for the purposes of this tournament.

Extreme music is getting progressively heavier these days. So, I'll start with the genres that definitely qualify:

Death Metal
Black Metal (including UnBlack Metal)
Grindcore
Deathcore
Goregrind
Deathgrind
Pornogrind
Powerviolence
Screamo
Sludge
Drone

There are some genres that have some gray area. Some bands from these genres qualify, and some don't. I'll look at bands from these genres on a case-by-case basis:

Metalcore (including Mathcore)
Thrash Metal
Progressive Metal
Symphonic Metal
Hardcore
Crust
Emotive Hardcore
Post-Hardcore
Post-Punk
Post-Rock
Post-Metal
Noise
Doom
Grunge

Genres that some might consider extreme, but that I personally am going to exclude for the purposes of this tournament at least:

Crunkcore
Dubstep (I don't know who might include this, but some people I know seem to think it's pretty extreme)
Heavy Metal

I'm not sure about these genres, so any input is appreciated:

Power Metal
Viking Metal
Pirate Metal
Speed Metal
Nu Metal

I'm sure I've missed a bunch of stuff, so please let me know.

Swan

Oh.... I'm so in.

Zotis
01-21-16, 01:50 AM
Also, if anyone knows, is Djent a genre, and if not then what is it a sub-genre of? I did a little googling, and apparently some people think it's a sub-genre of Progressive Metal, but didn't Messhugga start Djent? Then wouldn't that make it a sub-genre of Deathcore? I'm pretty confused by it thus far. I'll continue looking into it, but if anyone who knows a little about it can shed some light on the subject I'd much appreciate it.

I won't be doing this. I don't know what to nominate. And I'm getting burned out on Song Tournaments. But Good Luck. It sounds awesome.

I'll pass it too.... good tournament !

AboveTheClouds
01-21-16, 02:26 AM
I'm in, but I think sludge should be included because a band like Khanate is extreme AF.

Zotis
01-21-16, 02:33 AM
Alright, I just don't have much familiarity with Sludge so I wasn't sure about it.

AboveTheClouds
01-21-16, 02:35 AM
Crust is pretty heavy too, I was gonna nominate a Doom(The band) song for sure, but I will leave that to your discretion man. Shall we include drone as well?

Zotis
01-21-16, 02:49 AM
I don't know much about Drone. Can you show me something that represents the heavier side of Drone, and something that represents the softer side?

I think the majority of Crust would qualify. Doom (the band) certainly would. I have the impression that there is stuff in the Crust genre that wouldn't qualify. For example, I think the perimeter of Crust that merges with Anacro-Punk may contain bands that wouldn't qualify. I'm not really sure though.

AboveTheClouds
01-21-16, 02:55 AM
I can agree with the Crust/Anarcho deal, that sounds ok.

I don't know if there really is a softer side, but heres a few bands.

Meh, they're pretty entry level. They're okay, but I got bored of them pretty quickly back in the day. I haven't payed attention to anything they've done in the last 8 years or so.

What if we tried something a bit unconventional for this tournament?

Here's one idea: What if each round everyone submits a new song and we have some kind of point system? Or after a number of rounds all of the winning songs go into a bracket?

AboveTheClouds
01-23-16, 03:14 PM
Yeah that sounds like it could be interesting, but would it make extra work for you?

Zotis
01-23-16, 06:15 PM
Maybe, but I think it will be worth it.

What about adding a rule, only one song per band? That way people are getting more exposure, and having to venture out more to find material.

I didn't like that there were like three Death, Metallica, and Iron Maiden songs in the Metal tournament.

AboveTheClouds
01-23-16, 10:09 PM
Neither did I, I agree with you for that. Once a band is nominated, they cannot be nominated again by anyone, or just again by that person?

Zotis

By anyone, first come first serve.

AboveTheClouds

Making your ears bleed is not a qualifying attribute unfortunately. If you think Taylor Swift is bad though, you should check out that chick who did the nude wrecking ball... Half her head buzz cut, slutty mcslutt slutt what's her name. Sometimes I walk into a mall, and the music makes my nose bleed. I am into Hardcore, but I'm not hardcore enough for that crap.

Don't worry SC, there will be. Whichever two songs make it to the finals of the bracket will be winner and runner up.

Whoever gets the most points officially wins the preliminary, and then whichever song wins the bracket wins the tournament officially.

+1 for Bloodbath

1.Thrice - Subtle Daggers ( For personal reasons, I hate this band, a lot)
2.Planes Mistaken For Stars - The Past Two (Too tame for me)
3.Cannibal Corpse - Rancid Amputation
4.UnderOath - Cries of the Past
5.The Partisan Turbine - Inertia
6.Boris the Blade - Serpent Crown
7.Carnifex - Dragged Into the Grave(Not bad for Deathcore, I liked it)
8.IWrestledABearOnce - Corey Feldman Holocaust(Love the chicks vocals, and Clerks sample)
9.Death - Painkiller
10.Pig Destroyer - Thumbsucker(I think this is the weakest track from Terrifyer)
11.Alexisonfire - Little Girls Pointing and Laughing
12.Sodom - Cannon Fodder (I'm more of a In the Sign of Evil type of guy though)
13.Nails - In Exodus
14.Cursed - The Void (One of the best Canadian Crust bands around, good pick Swan)
15.Bloodbath - So You Die (Opeth+Katatonia+Dan Swano = $Profit$)
16.Tragedy - Conflicting Ideas (Vengeance is one of the best Crust albums ever released, deadly choice)

I think I did that right, Thrice gets 1 point and Tragedy gets 16?

Zotis
01-25-16, 05:38 AM
I did mine in the opposite order, giving the most points to the #1 band, but it doesn't matter as long as you let me know which way you're doing it.

Thrice used to be my favorite band. I can understand not liking them, but did you rate them lowest because you dislike them in general, or did you at least give that particular song a fair chance? Anyway, it's up to you, but I'm just curious.

Zotis

Planes Mistaken for Stars do have some screaming so I'll accept it. I didn't particularly like it, and it was very tame, but it was okay.

Zotis

When I listened to the recent submissions by False Writer and Gunslinger I had to listen to my #5 to see if The Partisan Turbine would surpass it. Thanks for that False Writer, Partisan Turbine were really awesome! So, I was listening to Weapon for the second time and I really fell in love with it. Honestly I must admit I was a bit preocupied when listening to some of them, and I had to listen to my top 5 again to see how I really felt about them.

Listening to them again, and concentrating on them more, I had a really hard time placing them. Swan, and AboveTheClouds, I love you guys. I mean even outside of this you're both great people and I'm so glad I met you, even though it's just over the internet and not in person. Seriously I'm shedding a few tears right now. That music was so beautiful. This is why I love music and art. Dang... I actually have a few tears streaking down my cheaks making my shirt wet...

I added Leviathan, Weapon, Cursed, and Nails to my regular playlist. That Pig Destroyer song was from one of their better albums too and it was an excellent nomination.

Here is my updated list:

1. Leviathan - Vexed and Vomit Hexed

Back atcha Zotis. You're a great dude.

Anyway, if it's cool, I plan on getting to this after my guitar lessons later today. I just think that would be the perfect time for this.

I got about a minute into it dude, and shut it off, same with Planes Mistaken for Stars. I reach a point where certain bands just sound like From First To Last or something else like that, and then it reminds me of a few people I knew when I was younger that were like suuuuuuper scene, and how they would act like they were kings of the underground because they listened to Thrice, Glassjaw and garbage like Job For a Cowboy. It's really a bias based on people, but because of that I've never been able to really look at it in a positive light. It's funny when they think that stuff is like the most brutal stuff to ever exist. Then you show them Goregrind or some really raw BM, and they are just kind of like ".....uh....". I don't doubt the musical/technical skill of Thrice, but I just don't dig that kind of music.

I'm just happy to have people to talk about and share music with, my musical tastes are usually not given a straight go by most people before they dismiss it as noise or evil, so to have found a few people who want recommendations and want to share is very refreshing. So I will say a thank you to Zotis and Swan for being open minded and recognizing that this music is indeed beautiful, you are the kinds of people who deserve this music(/Elitist) There are certain people who don't deserve this kind of music, because they cannot fathom all the emotion and raw energy which embodies it. I always sort of thought that this sort of music has a way of finding you, not you finding it..

And a thank you to everyone who knew their ass from a hole in the ground during the Metal HOF, thank you for helping preserve the definition of what Metal is, not some stupid abstract musical concept that allows anything with tremolo picking, rough vocals and blast beats to be metal. Props to Gunslanger and Guap for being Tr00... even if they like power metal;).

Well that song was from their really early stuff. They changed drastically after that and got a lot heavier. I personally am not too crazy about their later stuff, but you might like their 2nd album. Give this one a chance:

Listened to it the whole way through, and got a sneaking suspicion that the vocalist was trying to do his best Marilyn Manson impression (Ala Coma White) after 1:20. The music and the vocals don't really mesh well for me (The music is too melodic and poppy to facilitate the vocals imo.) Thank you for hooking me up with another song to try out though False, I do appreciate it.

Yup no problem. I now realize to no longer nominate any songs that are even remotely "light" from here on out. I do know that this is extreme music and I'll try my best to keep it extreme!

A lot of good stuff guys. The main problem I had with it is there is a lot of variety here... which is a good thing on one hand, but of course makes it difficult when comparing two very stylistically different songs. Some of it I didn't personally connect with, but I respect almost all of these songs on some level. I apologize if yours is low on my list - it's not out of dislike of those songs, so much as it is a GREAT appreciation for the more higher-up tunes.

The Leviathan song was my favorite and is my number one, so this list goes in descending order.

Leviathan - Vexed and Vomit Hexed
Death - Painkiller
Underoath - Cries of the Past (Zotis! My buddy showed me this song not too long ago. I love it's horror feel...)
Profanatica - Mocked, Scourged, Spit Upon
Iwrestledabearonce - Corey Feldman Holocaust
Masters Hammer - Ritual
Weapon - Archana
Sodom - Cannon Fodder
Bloodbath - So You Die
The Partisan Turbine- Inertia
Thrice - A Subtle Dagger
Carnifex - Dragged Into the Grave
Cannibal Corpse - Rancid Amputation
Alexisonfire - Little Girls Pointing and Laughing
Planes Mistaken for Stars - The Past Two

I don't know what Black Metal bands/fans he used as inspiration for that. Black Metal isn't about politics or race, it's anti human, anti life. It doesn't care if your Black, White, Green as long as your dead. Black metal champions physical strength a warrior spirit and fosters a lone wolf mentality, not respect for the weak and sheepish. I know that was for the lulz, but that guy simply looks like a fool for essentially equating Black Metal to Goth.

Also a lot of these guys have careers and families outside of music and no hair/short hair is more professional/approachable than long greasy hair. And if you look at pictures of a lot of these musicians nowadays who are from the old school, they have short hair and actually look quite respectable out of black metal attire. No one wants to go to their daughters concert recital in corpse paint, bullets and a vest with long greasy hair shrouding them.

It's possible to be Black Metal without looking the part, because it's not about style it's ideology. Some people just choose to allow that ideology to show through in the way they dress.

The individual that is LUST is very eccentric, the album cover of his first release is him standing naked in a lake with what looks like a flintlock pistol in his mouth, ready to pull the trigger.

When I was tallying the points it was easier to have the number of points next to the song, so I'm going to follow suit with you guys.

16. Vrolok - Within the Master's Chambers
15. Xasthur - Storms of Red Revenge
14. Earth Crisis - Firestorm
13. Lust - Spear of Destiny
12. Sarcofago - Ready to F***

2. Sepultra - To the Wall
1. Destruction - Bullets from Hell

Honestly the only stuff that got me excited was Vrolok, and Xasthur. Earth Crisis and Lust were really good too. Sarcofago were interesting, but I really hated the subject matter. As much as I love a lot of Satanic Black Metal music, I despise most of it's subject matter. And I recently acquired a taste for Pornogrind, Goregrind, Deathgrind, Raw Black Metal, and I reached the point where I don't think any music is too heavy for me to appreciate and enjoy. But I still find that the vast majority of the most extreme forms of music are 90% complete garbage in terms of it's subject matter (actually I could probably say that about all forms of music, and all forms of art for that matter). At least Satanic music that takes itself seriously has an element that I can respect in it's lyrical content and subject matter, even though it's evil. Because I love God, and fear him, I choose to hate evil. So I try to go into it being very careful about my frame of mind. I get tempted to lust when I see nudity on album covers, so I just look away and try to focus on the music. And when I can understand lyrics that are about sex it's either tempting or/and disgusting (depending on how vulgar and perverted the lyrics are). So all this is to say that I found it challenging to listen to Sarcofago, at least that song. And I had to listen to the song about three times to really feel where to place it. Instrumentally I liked it a lot, and the vocal techniques were very interesting, but the subject matter was a hurdle for me. Even my own nomination, Black Murder, is a band that I love the sound of but don't really listen to often because of how evil their imagery and subject matter is. Personally I don't really think of Satanic stuff as much more evil, or necessarily more Satanic, than other secular things like glorified violence in action movies or sexuality and lust in pop music.

Anyway, I'm just saying this to give you guys some insight into me, not to influence your nominations or anything. Everything from Kreator and under I rate 2.5. I'd rather listen to that over what plays on the radio, but it's not music that I particularly enjoyed listening to. I listened to most of the songs all the way through, and about half of them more than once. A few songs I skimmed a bit because I started getting bored.

That Sepultra song was more interesting than the few Sepultra songs I've heard in the past, but I just don't really find Sepultra very interesting.

I Ate Everybody, Black Tongue, Suffocation, and Torture Squad were pretty generic in their Deathcore/Death Metal elements. I've listened to a fair bit of Deathcore and Death Metal, and it's some pretty muddy water with hundreds of bands that sound just typical and generic. So I don't really get too interested in them. I will drop some more Deathcore nominations myself before this is over so you can see what kind of interesting Deathcore bands I've found over the years (or at least what I consider "interesting").

Jungle Rot, Kreator, Krisuin, and The Berzerker had interesting elements, but overall did not particularly appeal to my taste/niches.

Lust were really interesting. I liked the sloppiness and the eccentric elements.

Earth Crisis are a band that has never particularly appealed to me, but that song was more interesting than probably anything of theirs I've heard before.

Vrolok and Xasthur were fabulous. I listened to a bunch more of their material. Amazing stuff!

As always AboveTheClouds, you never cease to amaze.

I'm sad you didn't submit anything this round, Swan. I guess it's a lot of new territory for you, and maybe you're feeling a bit overwhelmed. I'd suggest trying a couple of approaches during the course of this tournament.

1. Pick 1-3 particular niches that you have so far and do some googling for similar material. When you come across some material that you like throw it at us. Don't worry about listening to a band's whole album, or familiarising yourself with their discography before you decide to pick a song you come across that interests you. Don't bog yourself down too much.

2. Pick 1-3 particular genres/styles that you are not yet familiar with to explore and follow the same pattern as #1.

Anyway, that's just my personal approach to exploring music. It's nice to add whole albums to playlists, or to go through a great band's whole discography, but that can be very time consuming too. Sometimes you just have to sample a whole bunch of random songs to get a scope of what's out there and then when you have time you can pick the most interesting things that you've found to sit down and really absorb. I don't know what you're personal approach to listening to music is, but mine is kind of chaotic. Sometimes I go long stretches without even listening to any music at all, and sometimes I go through stretches of doing practically nothing but listen to music.

Judging from your taste so far I'd suggest sampling some first and second wave Hardcore (and maybe third wave and newer too), some first wave Metalcore, early Grindcore, Grindcore/Powerviolence, Crust, Death Metal, Thrash Metal (newer/heavier stuff than Metallica/Slayer), and some Deathcore too.

I don't know how busy you are with other things in your life right now, so just do whatever you feel like and don't worry about it. Just don't waste time doing things that are meaningless or not particularly interesting. There isn't enough time in life to sample every amazing awesome thing out there to waste time on things that are just mediocre. :)

That Blue Angel tombstone is really interesting. I couldn't find out much about the guy buried there other than he was a member of parliament and a lawyer/judge (I think). And apparently the angel is called the "blue" angel because of a blue spray paint bomb that they couldn't completely wash off.

Such a beautiful piece of artistry though. I love seeing sculptures of angels. I don't know why, they're just so beautiful and interesting.

Talking about the vandalism kind of reminds me of how much art and architecture and literature has been destroyed in wars. Like when Baghdad was bombed in 2003.

Edit: I couldn't even find a picture of the angel with her hand. The missing hand kind of suits her though, gives her character and makes her look so wounded, and vulnerable.

Yeah, Blue Angel is kind of the "slang" name for it, from what I understand it's called the Pooley Angel after the guy who's grave it marks.

I was seriously thinking about picking an Orchid song. It would've probably been Epilogue of a Car Crash.

Yeah, for me Aesthetic Dialectic was the first song of theirs I ever heard and it totally amazed me. I love the whole dialogue. I guess it's pertaining to the music scene at the time. Other favorite songs of theirs are ...And the Cat Turned to Smoke, New Jersey vs Valhalla, and as you say Epilogue of a Car Crash. They have so many good songs though. Later I'm going to nominate another band that has members from Orchid.

It's gonna be pushing it but I'm gonna try my best to get these songs listened to and ranked before midnight. Also, why did Swan not nominate anything?

Zotis
01-27-16, 12:22 AM
He said he couldn't this round. I'll give you some leeway since I know you're working on it. Just submit it as soon as you can.

I'm wondering if we should have a pause/overlap between posting nominations and voting on them. Like, maybe on the day you vote you also post your nominations for the next round, instead of posting nominations for the same round you're voting for on the same day. What do you guys think?

Zotis
01-27-16, 12:24 AM
This would extend voting for this round until midnight tomorrow, and submit your songs for round 3 tomorrow. Voting for round 3 would not begin until after midnight tomorrow, and at midnight tomorrow no more nominations for round 3 would be accepted, and nominating for round 4 would begin.

Ok, here is my list:

1st - Kreator - Riot of Violence (Kreator is the best thrash metal band of all time)
2nd - Vrolok - Within the Master's Chambers (the REAL shite)
3rd - Gospel of the Horns - Vegeance is Mine (very conservative sounding black metal)
4th - Xasthur - Storms Of Red Revenge - Part 2 (AWESOME!)
5th - Orchid - Aesthetic Dialectic (AWESOME)
6th - LUST - Spear of Destiny (AWESOME, specially the vocals)
7th - Destruction - Bullets from Hell
8th - Suffocation - Pierced from Within
9th - Jungle Rot - Gore Bag
10th - Black Murder - Tower of Tortured Ones (bad production gave me a headache ;))
11th - Breeze of the Dying - Blame Me Not (this is not music, it's noise ;))
12th - I hate sex - I ****ing Hate Sports (whoa, WTF is this shiite)
13th - I Ate Everybody - Gather All the Bodies (still good)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14th - Berserker - Forever (really didn't like this, the vocals and the voice over it, meh)
15th - Firestorm - Earth Crisis (vocals sound lame and guitarwork is just ok)
16th Black Tongue - Coma (vocals sound lame, guitars are lame, meh)

I lined up to separate the stuff I liked from what I disliked

For the record I am Eastern Standard Time (-5 GMT). After midnight tonight (it's now technically the 27th) I will tally the votes, so until then you can edit and make changes if you want. Post your nominations for Round 3 whenever you're ready. At midnight tonight I won't accept any more votes for Round 2 or nominations for Round 3.

Edit: Guap, if you want you don't have to give any points to the stuff you didn't like. Of course that would also subtract 1 point from everything you did like. It's up to you.

After this tournament I'll take a break, but then I plan on doing another one. Not only that, but I want the limit of one song per band to be carried over. I hope you guys don't run out, because I for one have too many bands in my memory banks to list all the ones I want to. I think I could do this indefinitely and not run out, simply because there's so many more bands I'm constantly discovering every time I look.

I'm listening to Le Tigre. Meh. I don't really see the comparison though... At least not with this random song I clicked on.

That was the first song I heard by them, and I thought it blew, then years later I heard TKO and it was stuck in my head for a week, when I found out it was Le Tigre I was gonna off myself, haha. For some reason she reminds me of the girl from Iwrestledabearonce. That same nerdy hipster look. I mean there's good nerdy hipster, and there's bad nerdy hipster, and sometimes the line is pretty blurry. I dunno... I try to have good taste in general, but what do I know?

Like, I would never think of Thrice as all that hardcore compared to stuff like Beherit or Lord Gore, but people who are into that really hardcore stuff often put Thrice in the same boat as scene garbage like Asking Alexandria and Alesana or that fake Screamo like Grealy Estates and Hawthorne Heights. I think in Post-Hardcore/Metalcore/Deathcore there's a very fine line between lame and respectable. In my experience those lame scene kids don't listen to Thrice.

AboveTheClouds
01-27-16, 03:50 AM
In my experience what I listen too seems to be at the end of the spectrum in terms of extreme. So I guess I understand what you mean, I find thrash and hardcore to be pretty tame in comparison. But I can see how Thrice would get lumped in, I've honestly done it before. Scene kids are funny man, they listen to stuff that's a step away from radio play and think their underground.

Zotis
01-27-16, 04:13 AM
They are funny. I like how hardcore they think they are because they dye their hair black, have piercings, and listen to music most people can't stomach and have never heard of, but most of them are seriously a bunch of push overs.

But meh, most people don't have good taste, or developed taste, or an understanding of "quality" or a sense of "culture." I think it's just about realising where we are on the spectrum. Most people compare themselves with people around them and think, "I am so much better compared to them, therefore I'm pretty high up on the spectrum." But people don't really think about how far the spectrum goes and how close to the bottom they are. They're "so much" higher than people lower than them, and they don't realise that distance is nothing compared to how high the top is.

I think the first thing that made me start to think about this was when I played Counter Strike competitively. Because if you play on public servers and you destroy 90% of the people you encounter, you may think you're skill level is 90/100. But when I was at the peek of my game I couldn't even play on public servers because they would assume I was hacking because I was "too good" and they would ban me. But even when I was that good, I was only one level above the open division that anyone can enter at. And that was in the amateur league. I couldn't even touch the people one level above me, who were still not even in the highest level of the amateur league. And we still haven't even reached the pro level yet. I was so far down on the spectrum, and most people thought I was hacking because I was so much better than them and they thought they were pretty high on the spectrum.

Ever since I saw the movie Angela's Ashes, this line keeps ringing in my head, "There's a great blight of ignorance upon the world."

I'm ignorant. But the most ignorant people of all are the ones who think they know a lot.

I like this review of Mastodon's first album:

11 Boat Loads of Random Suckage. - 23%
hells_unicorn, January 30th, 2007
PrevNextFirstLast
It is impossible to collaborate with a musician under the age of 23 who hasn’t heard of Mastodon, they have been a media darling of sorts as a token metal band for the masses for a few years now. However, until 2 years ago I was happily ignorant of their existence, then my band was in search of a drummer and we ended up going with a kid who was fresh out of high school and looking for a challenge. Our collaboration with him lasted a meager 6 months and the only real fruit of our labor in trying to get him to keep a steady beat was me receiving this album as a birthday gift, which was quite elucidating as to why we had problems with him.

Mastodon plays a rather unique blend of Groove and Technical Metal, unique in the sense that no one else plays Groove Metal like this because the two concepts completely contradict each other. When music grooves, the drum beats are usually boring straight beats meant to induce the urge to nod your head to the music rather than bang it, but in the case of Mastodon you’d have to have 5 heads coming out of your shoulders nodding in a random overlapping manner in order to be in sync with the drums, which are so steeped with changes and fills that any sense of beat is completely gone.

The next symptom of this contradiction is the rather large collection of random riffs thrown together to make a distorted collage of misshapen sounds. In order to realize the groove aspect of the dichotomy, we obviously need simplistic riffs that stick to your cerebrum, mostly by boring the hell out of you and leaving an impression of painful drudgery. But if we are also to be technical, we must have rapid changes, so what we get is a massive collection of unrelated riffs all pasted together, guising as something that can be followed by the human ear. When you combine the ridiculous number of over-developed ideas (yes, it is possible to do this, although Mastodon is the only band I’ve heard that actually pulls it off) with the pretentious drum wankery, you are left with one simple question. Where the **** is the song in this mess? The truth is, there aren’t any songs on here, there is only 11 tracks with varying time lengths containing noise, albeit noise that took a lot of effort to create.

While the instrumentalists are obviously in possession of technical ability, the vocalist exhibits the exact opposite extreme. At best, the vocals on here can be described as a non-Brazilian version of what you heard on Sepultura’s “Chaos A.D.”, which was probably a fairly big influence on this band. However, whereas on that album you could somewhat understand the lyrics (which were downright idiotic I might add), on here the vocals are so garbled that unless you read the lyric sheet you think your listening to gibberish being screamed by a Baboon with Tourette's Syndrome. When you actually read the lyric sheets, much of what you read is sheer nonsense, having a bit in common with the quasi-Dadaist style of System of a Down.

Naturally, there are some small areas of sound on here where you get something resembling music. Most of these are found on the closing track “Elephant Man”, where we get more groove than we do technical groove, resulting in a redundant though at least listenable ballad with some melodic guitar leads. The added bonus here is that the singer has decided to shut up and let the music go it's own way rather than add some stupid spoken part.

The remaining tracks on here are all interchangeable with each other and can be distinguished only by their time lengths. Whether it’s the short fit of pointless and meandering minimalist riffs surrounded by a 2 minute drum solo guising as “Crusher Destroyer” (what a dumb ****ing name), or longer swamps of musical diarrhea such as “Trainwreck” (hence the name) and “March of the Fire ants”, none of it can be recalled by memory after being heard. The only thing you get is an impression, and it fades quickly when you seek out better music.

Now how does one explain the massive following that this band has? Why are they so damned popular? I struggled with this for a little while before remembering where this music came from. Throughout the early 90s there was a rather comical yet pathetic display of monkey see monkey do that resulted in the quick life and death of both Groove Metal and Grunge. Kurt Cobain’s and Sepultura’s success in the 90s was the result of what drives lemmings to commit mass suicide, you don’t question why something is either good or bad, you simply listen because that is what everyone else is doing. The initial impression that anyone is listening is provided by the industry which produces it, and then it snowballs from there.

So to all of my fellow metal heads out there whom are either contemplating buying any releases by this band or questioning why they are so big, let offer some advice, don’t bother with it. This rather massive swamp of decrepit excrement is not worth anyone’s time. Truth be told, I’d rather have my eyes plucked out and then be skull ****ed by a T-Rex rather than listen to this again.

Bathory (This song means a lot to me, all of Bathory's work means a lot to me, RIP Quorthon, may you feast, drink and battle to your hearts content in Valhalla)
Mayhem (Although I prefer Dead's work over Attila, this song is a classic and atmospheric as hell, it's sent many a shiver down my spine)

Septic Flesh (Boring as hell, always thought they were pretty formulaic)
The Saddest Landscape(Strange fluctuations through out the whole song,)
Last X Minute (My buddy thought it was a kid singing, hahaha. Had a hard time taking this seriously dude, sorry)

I rated all the songs for this round and wrote it out on my laptop, and then forgot to bring it with me. I get off work at midnight, I'll get home around 1:30am. I'll post it then.

That Mastadon review was a bit pretentious I found. Clearly they know more about it than me, and a lot more about music than me, but I couldn't stomach a lot of their line of reasoning and obvious bias. I personally found Mastadon a bit boring, but I didn't hate it. I wouldn't make any effort to listen to it on my own, but my feelings towards it were pretty neutral. If it was playing in the background of a store I'd prefer that to 99% of what plays at stores.

Gideon - Gutcheck (2.5)
Mayhem - Freezing Moon (2.5)
Black Witchery - Deathrash (2.5)
Impiety - The Black Vomit (2.5)
Emperor - Into the Infinity of Thoughts (2.5)
Exmortus - In Hatred's Flame (2.25)
Blind Guardian - Fast to Madness (2)
Amon Amarth - Valhall Awaits Me (2)

Amon Amarth were really boring. I thought the lyrics, basically describing a viking's actions on a battlefield, were pretty lame. "The axe cracked the helmet, I twisted my sword, a weapon in each hand, bla bla..." The instrumentals did nothing for me either.

I don't like Power Metal, and Blind Guardian were no exception. Sorry Guap, I did give it a full listen, but I just couldn't enjoy it at all.

Exmortus were alright. Nothing special, but I didn't mind it.

Mastadon had some interesting elements. Overall I wasn't particularly interested, but I wasn't bored either.
I felt the same way about Emperor. It was really hard to place them. Different elements appealed to me, and different elments didn't particularly interest me. I gave Mastadon a slight edge. I think I liked Mastadon's Deathcore/Death Metal elements a little more than Emperor's Symphonic/hymn elements.

Mayhem were a bit repetative. I enjoyed the Black Metal elements, but I wasn't particularly crazy about them. It was hard to place, but I ended up sticking them in between Mastadon and Emperor in terms of overall enjoyment.

I've never been a fan of Bathory, but that song was actually pretty decent. I can see why they're so popular.

I didn't mind Gideon's style, but it was a big generic.

Pestilence were interesting. I've heard them before. They're not particularly in my radar, but they are good solid respectable old-school Death Metal. Nice job Gunslinger!

Septic Flesh... hmm... well... The singing reminded me of Billy Talent. I thought that was funny. But actually I enjoyed the various elements that accompanied the brutal heaviness. I didn't love it, but it was pretty decent.

Impiety and Black Witchery were okay. I stuck them in the middle-ish.

Conqueror were interesting. I liked their vocals, the low fidelity of their recording, and the fast heavy blasting instrumentals and other interesting elements thrown in. My cup of tea. It's kind of funny how, as a Christian, something titled "Christ's Death," with sounds that would repulse most people as some kind of demon possessed putrid debauchary, actually sounded so interesting, creative, and compelling. But these kinds of things only make me think about how wonderful the fact that Christ died for me really is. He endured this ridicule and shame even though he's God almighty, and because of that I can actually be free from my own wickedness and am enabled to turn my life around and be pure. Amazing. I guess that's why all this demonic imagery doesn't fase me. Actually, it reminds me of why I love horror movies and the feeling of being scared and experiencing fear. What would most people consider the most terrifying thing? A demonic monster violent, gorry, blood-thirsty, going to kill them and devour their innards. But what's really the greatest fear? What do those monstrous demons fear? They fear God and the eternal condemnation that awaits them. "Do not fear that which can only harm the body and then can do no more to you. Fear him who has the power to destroy the body and cast the soul into hell for all eternity. The fear of the Lord is the beggining of wisdom. To fear the Lord is to hate evil." That's a paraphrase of a few Bible passages.

Satyricon... I have the impression that I'm not particularly interested in them. I know I've listened to them before years ago. Well anyway, that song was pretty decent.

The Saddest Landscape are a great Screamo band, very popular among fans of the genre. Their blend of melodic hardcore puts me at incredible ease. I wouldn't say they are in my top 50 Screamo bands, but definitely top 100.

Morbid Angel's first album is one of my top 5 favorite Death Metal albums.

I will tally round three's results after I wake up. I'm really tired after a 12 hour shift and hardly any sleep yesterday.

I'll post my round 4 nominations before I go to sleep though.

The guys at Metal archives are very critical of stuff and very sure of their superior taste. So that if they dislike something that other people like its a puzzle: "how can people listen to that?", he concludes its because of social pressure. There is no acknowledgement of the fact that individual tastes might be different.

But I usually agree strongly with the tastes of some reviewers there like Hells Unicorn.

I slept for 12 hours today, and I'm at a tournament tonight, so I'll get to this first chance I get.

I'm terribly sorry all but I haven't been able to get around to doing this. Just go ahead and vote for your noms, don't wait for me. Just consider me dropped out for now. Sorry Zotis.

You don't need to drop out. You can just take a break and come back whenever you're ready.

Anyway, lets all take a breather. I have another Smash Bros. Melee tournament tomorrow that's going to last all day.

Alright well if that's the case then here's my next wave:

Joshua Fit for Battle - Opportunist (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XNVgEbuVbf4)

Fall of Efrafa - Pity the Weak (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hWYR9WuAuhU)

Rhapsody of Fire - Reign of Terror (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aItNg5SDX9Q)

From doing this I've learned that most of you like Black Metal, unfortunately I just don't listen to it much. However, there is this one band I found last year that I do like. They are black metal with folk elements, give this a chance:
Vorna - Jalkemme (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FbDVLgjeqb4)

It may just be the four of us though, as Swan doesn't pursue much extreme music and I'm not sure about False Writer. I like that False Writer likes Screamo and Deathcore though. And I wish Swan would just add Grindcore and old-school Hardcore/Metalcore/Crust to his regular template.

Some people just experiment with it and see where it takes them, some people really end up having a passion for it.

Have you seen the documentary, American Hardcore? The way they talked about that music is exactly how I felt when I was a teenager. I hated everything on the radio, but I knew awesome music that expressed how I felt had to be out there. I'm so grateful that extreme music exists. And I hate that cliche statement so many people make, "You can't understand what they're saying."

Yeah sorry but I probably won't continue with this. No one liked the stuff I nominated anyway so there's really no point. Good luck though and hope it goes well.

I liked the stuff you nominated. No one else besides you listens to Screamo...

Screamo and emo are amazing. I've been listening to quite a bit lately, I guess I've been in a sour mood. :p

Indian Summer is a band you should definitely check out if you haven't already... I'm not sure if we talked about them before?

Indian Summer are great. I listen to them from time to time.
