View Full Version : National Hunger Awareness Day
Tomorrow (June, 5th 2003) is the 2nd ever National Hunger Awareness Day in the U.S. It would be a great day to donate canned food, and other non-perishable foodstuffs to your local food banks.
Can 9 million hungry kids inspire a nation?

See... I think this is great and everything, but where in the world do you find a food bank? When I did it, it was always in school. I've never seen a place called "Food Bank". Millions of people wouldn't have to go hungry if we knew where the food banks were! I hate how they're so vague.

Below is a website that searches for food banks by state. You can donate food at the food bank or you can call to see if there is somewhere closer to your home where you can drop the food off. In Kong's town the local food bank has teamed up with all of the region's Albano Dry-Cleaners stores to make donating easier, and there may be a similar setup in your town as well.

Most of the local Churches around here collect for the Food Banks and also a lot of the grocery stores have bins up front to donate…

And that is just the number of children that are recipients from America's Second Harvest program (which runs that link Kong gave). That website says that, "In 2000, approximately 13 million American children were food insecure, meaning they were hungry or at risk of hunger (United States Department of Agriculture, Household Food Security in the United States, March, 2001)."

Worldwide, 6 million children under the age of 5 die every year as a result of hunger.

Most food banks distribute their food locally.

I know that the postal service collects food... you leave a bag out on your porch and they pick it up that morning (but it's only designated times of the year)...or you could even take it to the salvation army.

Uhm, if you want your donations to go to families in the U.S., and you live in the U.S. as well, then you can just give it to your local food bank because they will distribute the food to families that live in your region.
I hope you all are aware that I'm hungry right now.
