Call me Picasswan. Swan Barrett. Leonardo Da Vincswan. Then imagine someone who is way less talented than all those guys, and you get me!

I wanted to make a thread to post my musical sketches in, but Gatsby encouraged me to make it a general art thread just in case. Makes sense.

Anyway, I'll post art I make in here. If you want to call it art. I mean, I'm a bird for Pete's sake. I don't even have hands! Yet somehow I manage. There is a lot of honking involved.

Moving on...

I guess I'll start with what I'm most proud of having made so far in my musical ventures.

This was really just a little experiment I made when I rented a cello. I wanted to test it out, so threw together this little diddy. But damn was that cello inspiring. It's not perfect but whatevs, I like it. I think one of these days I'll go back and fix the issues I have with it.

Specific inspirations? Hildur Gudnadottir, one of my fave musicians. Sunn O))). The Fountain score. The Turin Horse score. Stuff like that.

Swan!

I challenge you to play this riff and record it on vocaroo!

You don't necessarily have to play it as crappy as me. You can play it better!

Here's my try:

* messes up *
WHAT?!"

Haven't posted anything in a while, so I figured I'd share a little something I made. It's not a full song - actually, it was an assignment from my guitar teacher. He had a chord progression assignment, make a basic chord progression, turn the chords into more interesting chords (for example, turn a C into a C dominant 7th), then create a melody for it. This is what I came up with.

I used my new multitrack recorder, the Zoom R8, to create it. It's kind of a huge step-back for me, since I'm used to using Ableton and not a hardware recorder. The multitrack recorder is far more limiting and basic, in a great way - I love it - but I still have to get better at it. My fave thing about making music is the continual, noticeable progress you make, and I'm not sure that's something that ever ceases to happen. You're always evolving as an artist, and I feel I still have a ways to go before I am as good as I want to be. In fact, I'm not sure I'll ever reach that level I want to be at - I think it was Lynch or someone who said, an artist is always reaching for a level of greatness they may never feel they get to.

Anyway, here (http://picosong.com/NjhB/) ya go. It's pretty simple, but my teacher was really enthusiastic about the progression/melody that I wanted to share it with you guys.

Stuffed Mushrooms (http://picosong.com/JvRM/)

Yes this is good. I completely think of this as background music to something spookishly medieval, lots of fog and darkness, steel plate armor covered in blood as warriors prepare for another onslaught. Right at the climax of the song when the roaring stops, maybe someone dies.

Interested to hear your other tracks :)

Good. The beginning is almost a honkey tonkish sort of feel, and then becomes sort of a daytime driving song. I also liked that you have another range of sound other than heavy and dark. You definitely have the knack for mood, do you listen to jazz by chance? Ever hear any of Tangerine Dreams old stuff?

Yeah I love jazz. Miles Davis is one of my faves. Also Charlie Mingus. I'm not a jazz expert, it's something I recently ventured into, but I do love it. Adding a sort of jazzy flavoring to songs almost always makes them that much better and more interesting, at least to me. My teacher and I were studying the genre for a while, which is probably why it sounds a bit jazzy.

And yeah, I love Tangerine Dream, but I'm only really familiar with their biggest stuff like Stratosfear, Phaedra, and maybe some other stuff. Why do you mention them, if I may ask?

Background & mood music may be your niche. Tangerine Dream were involved in scores of films. Also many say John Carpenter never was the same once his music went away. Sound is easily the most underrated aspect of a film, but less than a handful can claim mainstream popularity. You have real ability, and it sprang to my mind when I heard these pieces.

I agree about sound in film. Sound editing, mixing, and of course score all go a long way.

I definitely have a great appreciation for mood in art, so I'm glad that seems to come across in my own stuff. Thanks a lot for the kind words TONGO. :)

I'm going to track my progress as I learn all of "Stairway to Heaven". Technically my teacher and I aren't going to start learning/studying it until next week, but he gave me the sheet music and I couldn't resist but try the solo out. I ended up spending about two hours practicing it (or, the main solo, minus those fills at the end), and this is the result of that! I played at a slightly slower tempo, because that's what you do for practice until you've got it down, then you pick up the pace.

So here we go.

"Stairway to Heaven" update. I've been practicing the solo more, and have started playing it up to the songs normal tempo.

I recorded it, but a few things to note:

- I'm not really happy with the take, but I'm okay showing it because this is meant to show my progress, and it was the best one I had so I went with it and stopped after because...

- I have a f*cking blister on my ring finger from playing too much guitar. For those who don't know, that's the finger I'm using every time you hear a string bend (and the finger that starts the solo). It hurts like a b. So, what you're hearing is me playing while in pain.

I missed the first one but just listened to this one. You seem to have a melodic way of not hitting the strings too hard, and it works. Its more like the guitars a singer in the solo, rather than a rhythm maker.

I briefly took guitar lessons whe I was a kid, and my teacher did not want me using a pick, just have long nails. Blister city, and for some reason I lost interest. Wish Id stuck with it now.

Mr Minio

Good work! Keep practising!

PS: I'm using my ring finger to bend a string, or more specifically both my ring finger and middle finger for more strength and stability.

Weird that he had you use just your fingers instead of a pick. Was he a classical teacher?

Thanks Minio. Do you use heavy strings?

No he was just some dude at a guitar shop. He was in a band that played at one of those Knights Of Columbus lodges.

Interesting. I can't imagine starting a kid off using just his fingers instead of a pick would be a good idea, unless you were maybe doing classical.

I started using Ableton again. Such a fun program when you really get into it because there is so much freaking experimentation you can do. There are all sorts of different avenues you can take to achieve a particular thing you want to achieve, and each way will produce a slightly different quality in some way.

The past few days I'd been meaning to get back into it and make something, but was having "Ableton block," if you will, and only managed to noodle around with the program a bit. But an all-nighter, home alone, always does the trick, and it did this time as well. I produced a song I'm quite proud of. And that's what matters.

Here (https://soundcloud.com/swancore/chaos-reigns) it is.

Would you like a drum track for the solo? I can start recording when it nears noon, and have it done in a few minutes.

It was really just a test, so I don't see much point to be honest, as cool as that would be. That being said... I'd love to collaborate. If you want, I'll try and make an original guitar composition (maybe with some piano), and you can lay down a drum track to it? Might take some time before I can get to it/get it finished, but that would be pretty cool.

I have spent the last four or five hours clicking away like a madman. My intent going into this song was to make something absolutely chaotic, and that flowed organically. I wanted something to always be going on. Naturally I continued the abrasiveness of my past few tracks, as I'm still obsessed with Death Grips and chaotic music in general.

Okay I wasn't even going to post this officially (even though technically I did for like 30 minutes... before deleting it. :p) but cricket was pretty enthusiastic about it which helped build my confidence enough to do so. It's honestly just something I cooked up in about an hour last night. Kind of a demo more than anything. A bit rough and I will definitely work it into some fuller and better structurally. Actually, it's a pretty novice attempt at doing something singer/songwriter-ish. I want to pursue that genre more as I get more and more confident in my singing and lyrical abilities. I haven't done too much stuff like it, so I reckon it's not amazing, but I only have improvement ahead of me.

I made this song as a kind of ode to the show Stranger Things, one of my big inspirations right now. I had the show and it's soundtrack on my mind while making this song. Completed overnight, so it's pretty basic, but whatever. I had fun making it.

I liked that, it's the perfect length for an instrumental piece. I enjoyed it more than a lot of the stuff I hear in the song tournaments. In my mind, that would be great on a soundtrack.

Thank you sir. :)

Should note I was watching John Carpenter stuff and checking out his recent album Lost Themes II last night, while making this, so that must've influenced it too, but I think this time it was by way of Stranger Things (which sonically is clearly influenced by him), as opposed to being influenced by him directly, which is often the case.

Finally coming to make sense of this whole sidechain compression thing, too, I think.

Awesome Swan, agree with Cricket;s comments that it would work well on a soundtrack, would be cool to see what a load of these would look like on video/in a film.

If I ever make a neo-giallo, I will put this song in the OST.

Cooked this up tonight. Inspired by John Carpenter, Stranger Things, Blade Runner, and the script I'm starting to think about writing.

An excellent modern day Halloween industrial sound. I liked in the beginning what almost sounded like silverware dropping or a glass breaking, thought it would reoccur at some point in the song. I know David Fincher would use this in a film.

Man I urge you to watch a movie youve never seen or heard with the sound off subtitled, and make your own mood music for the film, then compare after. Good work Swan. :)

Thanks TONGO. Yeah, I need to try that. I want to see how I'd do scoring a short film or something. That's where Daniel Metcalf comes in. ;)

Kind of a one-off, didn't take five hours to make this time (:p), but I wanted to make an industrial track using mostly field recordings and whatnot... i.e. no synths or midi or anything.

I compiled a few of my recent creations into my first EP as Spiral Vi. I'm just doing it for fun, this is all for fun and I'm probably not going to do anything with it except share it around or whatever. I think these three songs capture a similar mood even though there is variety, and I like how they flow from one track to the next, and so I wanted to compile them into a cohesive whole.

My friend and I made our second EP as Non Sano di Mente. We want to put it on Bandcamp too, but for now it's here on Soundcloud.
