Most teams in playoff spots at Christmas hold on...which would translate to the following this year:
5 Surprise teams that are IN:
Philadelphia
Vancouver
Arizona
Washington
Nashville
5 OUT:
Minnesota
Edmonton
Carolina
Tampa Bay
Pittsburgh
Some of these are more surprising (Philly, Edmonton) than others, but I'm sure a team or two will swap by springtime.
Fabulous

Carolina is the team I'm most surprised about. They've been such a well oiled machine during the previous regular seasons.

Two questions for anyone who can answer these.
1. Why are there two separate broadcasts for the Boston Bruins and the Minnesota Wild? Does each team have their own camera crew and equipment and broadcast the games separately from the other team?

-------------
2. What do the two sets of numbers in parenthesis mean on the bottom left? The (21-8-5) and the (18-12-2)?

Thank you.

Yes, they each record the game independently, at least in cases where a national network isn't broadcasting. They'll have different announcers, stats (more emphasis on the home team), et cetera.
2. What do the two sets of numbers in parenthesis mean on the bottom left? The (21-8-5) and the (18-12-2)?
That's the team's record. There's three of them because in hockey you can tie/have OT/shootout losses, which are scored differently for the standings than normal losses.

This should be everybody's first goal.

VGK is looking like a new team after this trade deadline...not sure if that will end up being a good or bad thing
Will The Coyotes just move and end this nonsense.
Finally it ends.

Playoffs are set! I think a couple upsets may happen first glance...TB over Florida, Nashville over Vancouver. Obviously cheering for VGK over Dallas (which I think could easily happen)

Loner, may the best team win. And by 'best team' I mean the Oilers and by 'win' I mean they sweep the Kings and eliminate them for the third year in a row.
It's tough being a fan of a western conference team living in Toronto. 10 pm starts - I can't do it these days. I think I'm going to be watching in the mornings.
Also, enough, USA. This is getting to be a bit much. Canada needs a cup. I don't care what Canadian team wins. It's been over thirty years. We need this.

If the Kings lose to The Oilers again, Rob Blake should be fired. Bad contracts, poor talent evaluation.

One team down, three to go. Sorry Loner. But not really. Canucks or Preds? It will be interesting if it's an EDM vs VAN series. I'm happy with how the Oilers played this series. I hate the Knights so hoping they lose to Dallas.

VGK has quickly become the NHL's most hated team haha
I'm cheering for Nashville...they gotta win at least one game at home, right?
Game 7 in Boston is gonna be outstanding. What a series for them to be up 3-1 for the second year in a row, and now I'm just hoping Matthews plays.

Well that series went exactly as expected. Like the tired out Fast and Furious franchise regurgitating the same crap year after year banking a few bucks along the way. People watch, eat their popcorn, and when it's done it joins the brain mush of the previous sequels (seasons) and expectations, and you can't even tell the difference between films anymore. Poor Leafs fans. I've lived here almost eight years now and I can feel it when talking to them, more and more each year. You can feel it in the streets. I'm sorry, guys.

Bruins lose all 3 games at home...wow
Didn't expect Colorado to go out like that either
Well Bruins lost 3 in a row haha no thanks to a bad call by the officials to not overturn the goal by Bennett (cross-checked Coyle into Swayman before scoring)
I still think that was the right call. It was an extremely light cross-check (dozens of harder ones aren't called every game), and the main reason Coyle went against Swayman was his skating trajectory. I don't want that kind of goal overturned.
And speaking of overturned goals, in the last DAL-COL game, there was one of the worst overturns I've ever seen. Thankfully, Dallas scored again, and justice was served.
A Finnish NHL viewer's dream final is still alive, FLA-DAL ;)

05-19-24, 11:17 AM
It worked out for Edmonton, but Knoblauch's decision to start Skinner again could have really blown up in their faces...it will still be for naught if they can't win game 7
It would be great if The Oilers play The Panthers, but I don't think that will happen.
chawhee
05-21-24, 08:35 AM
Well the two "hungriest" teams in the West made the conference final...it's easy to think Dallas is the heavy favorite, but I still think Edmonton has a shot
EDIT: Panthers are actually a heavier favorite over the Rangers...that makes little sense to me

06-19-24, 08:41 AM
Haha well I didn't bet it or anything, but it worked out in the NBA. NHL is a bit different, and though I still think Florida wins the series, Edmonton's shot to win was way higher than the Mavs all along in my opinion.
I don't know why The NHL allows this to happen during the playoffs but goodbye Pierre-Luc Dubois. No salary retained from what I understand. Another Rob Blake addition through subtraction deal. :(

VGK finally drops their home win streak to Carolina, who scares me more than Winnipeg as far as a contender.
chawhee
11-29-24, 08:45 AM
The story goes that NHL teams have shown their true colors by this point in the season...looks like Winnipeg and Carolina are juggernauts yet again (until they get to the playoffs) and the Blackhawks might get another first overall pick with how awful they have looked.

12-19-24, 09:04 AM
Playoff forecasting irritates me every year...ESPN for example:
UTAH playoff chances: 73% (way too high for a team fighting for a wildcard spot with numerous other teams)
LA playoff chances: 64% (way too low considering they are currently 2nd in their division)
NAS playoff chances: 8% (also way too high for being statistically tied for the worst team in the league)
CHI playoff chances: 0% (tied with Nashville in points percentage...what a dumb analysis system)
chawhee
01-19-25, 10:49 AM
Quick update:
Utah still well out of a playoff spot, LA still top 3 in their division, Nashville and Chicago still bottom 5 in the league.
Also, VGK going through their annual January slump...lets see how long it lasts. And the Blues still can't win 3 games in a row.
chawhee
01-23-25, 10:06 AM
Another quick nonsensical playoff projection update...
-Islanders (who have a below .500 pts %) with a higher % chance of making the playoffs than the Blue Jackets (who are currently basically tied for a playoff spot)
I think we just saw the season's biggest trade when Mikko Rantanen moved to Carolina. As a Finnish NHL fan, this trade cemented the Hurricanes as the most interesting team in the league (followed by Florida and Montreal).

Necas fitting in well with Colorado so far
Yeah, I think it's easier for him to adjust to Colorado's game than it is for Rantanen to Carolina's. Hurricanes have had quite a unique system since Brind’Amour took over.
The Utah team name is down to three:
The Utah Hockey Club
The Utah Mammoth
The Utah Wasatch.
chawhee
02-05-25, 09:26 AM
Gotta go with the Mammoth, though I saw they swapped out Wasatch for Outlaws.
JT Miller to the Rangers might be the shot in the arm they need to finally climb back into the playoffs.

Well maybe Carolina can get past New Jersey based on their recent problems...
Blues looking to make a Cup run similar to 2019 apparently
It all depends on playoff performance, but the Jets have consistently been the best team all year (and yet sportsbooks don't even have them top 5 to win it all)

04-18-25, 11:09 AM
Playoffs anyone?
As far as upsets...Ottawa over Toronto could happen. Maybe the Blues can get playoff Hellebuyck and win that series. Even if Minnesota recaptures their early season strength, I'm not sure they can beat VGK. And I'm surprised to see the Kings as an underdog this year to Edmonton.
