I'm so sorry everyone, I'm going to have to pull out of the tourney. I've had to volunteer to work Friday, Sat and Sunday at the local community centre helping to organise the kids and the old people's Xmas parties. There isn't a lot of us so that's the whole day I'll have to be up there. I'm just not going to have time to listen to everyones songs and as I always like to listen properly, I'd rather not hold everyone up.

Maybe we just need to better explain to the newbies how these things work when they want to join? I think sometimes they join because it sounds like fun, but they don't understand how it works, so they don't realize that they have to be here every day to vote.

As the tournament veterans, it's our job to explain it to them so they can participate properly, not to push them away.

And as far as I know, I never have been. :nope: Although there was that time when two of the high school girls (who happened to be black) that I used to have to work with were talking about something (I was doing something else - I wasn't paying that much attention to the exact topic). Okay, so here's how this is going to work:

-In the first few rounds, I will post 32 matches per day but will allow people two days per set to get their votes in. Yes this will make the first few rounds take a day longer to complete each, but I think will make the voting process easier.
-Anybody may vote in the early rounds, however once we get closer to the end, I will only accept votes from people who have been voting pretty consistently from the start.
-This tournament is massive, so for the sake of my sanity, please make sure you state which set you are voting in ("Round 1 Day 1").
-I find it personally quite irritating when people skip matches. So I'm not accepting partial votes. Find SOMETHING that you like more (or hate more) about one song over the other. It's really not that hard. People are voting for or against your crappy songs, you can do the same with theirs.
-If a link doesn't work for you, search for the song on YouTube. "The link doesn't work" is not a valid excuse to skip a match or to vote against a song.
-I will not post any matches on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Period. I may also not post anything on December 26th, depending on what I feel like doing.

Beautiful. It's great to be reminded of the old days of Song Tournament, when people did whatever they felt like doing, such as this insane first round with 32 matches. I love it. I feel like I'm home.

1. Edward Maya ft. Vika Jigulina "Stereo Love" vs. John Lennon-Happy Xmas-I generally hate modern pop/dance music, so that first song was a big surprise. I liked it a lot. The second is one of the best Christmas songs for me, and makes this a close match.

2. Was (Not Was) - Walk The Dinosaur vs. Cristina -Desperate Journalist-I thought I'd be going the other way just based on familiarity, but it just didn't do enough for me. Christina gets my vote by a hair.

3. Talking Heads - Road to Nowhere vs. Let It Whip - Dazz Band-Never heard the first song before; it took a minute, but it's pretty catchy. I didn't recognize the second song by title, but it turned out to be a song I know and like.

4. Eska - Shades of Blue vs. Poison - Nothing but a Good Time-Poison isn't exactly great, but they're a fun band, and I saw them live in the 80's so there's memories. I didn't care for Eska.

5. Buckingham Nicks - Frozen Love vs. The Chain Gang of 1974 - Sleepwalking-Frozen Love went on a while, but it's a strong song and I could picture myself getting into it if I heard it with more frequency. I thought the other was ok.

6. Rock Steady - The Whispers vs. Stevie Nicks – Stand Back-These are both songs that I've never loved all that much for what they are, but I've always liked both.

7. Nadine Shah - Fool vs. Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone-I was a teenager who loved Top Gun and 80's music, and although I like it, I never felt Danger Zone and I find it slightly corny. I'll throw my vote to the song that felt fresher, since I liked it well enough.

8. The Rolling Stones-Monkey Man vs. The Jimi Hendrix Experience – All Along the Watchtower-Both are great but the Stones are my favorite band, and while I don't hear Monkey Man that much, I hear Watchtower too much.

9. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You vs. Five for Fighting - Superman-I'm already sick of Christmas and I think All I Want is the first I've heard this year. It pains me to vote for either.

10. Wham - Last Christmas vs. Sting-Fields of Gold-Close match between two songs that have always been average to mediocre for me.

11. George Strait - Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye vs. Henry Rollins-Liar-The first is pleasant but forgettable, while the other was ok once it got going.

12. The Hollies - Bus Stop vs. Pink ft. Nate Ruess "Just Give Me a Reason"-I've nominated The Hollies a couple times with no success. They're a great band and that's another great song from them. I didn't like the Pink song.

13. CCR-Fortunate Son vs. Let's Get High- Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros-That's one of my favorite CCR songs so this is an easy vote, but I did enjoy the other one.

14. Republica - Drop Dead Gorgeous vs. The Jim Carroll Band - People Who Died-I nominated People Who Died a few months back, so obviously I like it. I liked the other one a bit as well.

16. Cruella De Ville - Who's At The Door? vs. People Everyday (Metamorphosis Mix)- Arrested Development-Not especially fond of either, but I didn't dislike them.

17. Blues Traveler - Run Around vs. Leona Lewis "Run"-I've heard the first, and it's decent. I wouldn't ever like the other song, just due to my taste.

18. Tricky-Excess vs. John Schneider - Life After You-Schneider's song is a little bland.

19. Queen - Killer Queen vs. Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water-My only hesitancy is that this is the third time that Smoke on the Water has been nominated in about the last five tournaments. It's a favorite of mine so I'll go with it, but I like Killer Queen enough that I wouldn't mind it winning this match.

2. Tim McGraw - I Keep It Under My Hat vs. Paul McCartney & The Wings - Band On The Run-I'd love to go with McGraw here, but to me, modern slow country all sounds the same and is just alright. Band on the Run is great, but as soon as it's up against a song I like, I'm going the other way. It's one of the most overplayed songs around, in these tournaments and everywhere else.

3. Future Islands - Seasons (Waiting On You) vs. Frank Sinatra - My Way-That first song was weird for me; is it pop/country?

4. Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmas Time vs. Michael Jackson - Leave Me Alone-Not keen on either, but I'd rather hear Paul's voice than Michael's squeals.

5. Fool For Love- Lord Huron vs. Lana Del Rey "Born to Die"-Surprisingly, I didn't hate either of these.

6. Mansun - Stripper Vicar vs Tinchy Stryder ft. N-Dubz "Number 1"-Not into either, but I wouldn't mind the second if I was at a club.
