Hey now, it's the playoffs.
We all know the drill by now: the playoffs are a bit of a crap shoot. Your job as an owner is to try to finish among the top scorers, but whether not you actually take home the trophy is up to Fate, that fickle jezebel. It's kind of like winning the NBA draft lottery: your performance has a definite influence on the odds, but it's a long way from dispositive. You still end up in a flashy suit behind a lectern sweating it out while a lot of ping pong balls bounce around. I may or may not have lost control of this analogy.
In our league, however, the correlation has been fairly strong: the champions each year have been #1, #5, #2, #4, #1, #1, and #1 in scoring. And here's what those champions get:

The Byes
#1 seed Fabulous hopped aboard the Devonta Freeman train early in the year and rode it to such a strong start that he was able to more or less coast to the top spot. He needed that early-season dominance to hang onto it, though, as he heads into the Bye having lost his last two games and (more importantly) averaging under 90 points over the last four weeks.
Spaulding, on the other hand, has won his last two and scored over 300 points across them. In fact, the difference the last two weeks was such that he fell just 22 points shy of taking the #1 seed, which would've been unthinkable just a month ago.
Anyway, Byes in fantasy are nothing like Byes in real life. In real life the team gets a week off to rest up and prepare. In fantasy, all your dudes are still playing, so all you get is a) one more week of data to make lineup decisions, and b) a chance to have a crappy week (or run into an opponent with a great one) and not have it hurt you. Most of the time neither matters: teams with Byes tend to have stable lineups at this point in the season, and they don't usually have crappy weeks
This year, I think a) may have a noticeable benefit: Spaulding has an unusual glut of mid-range startable depth and, correspondingly, an unusual number of lineup decisions for a top-seeded team, so he may well benefit from seeing what everybody does in Week 14.
The real value of the Bye is that lower-seeded teams can have randomly great weeks. So Fab and the Cap'n get to kick back while the rest of us have to play a round of Russian Roulette with each other. Here are those of us who've gotta pull that trigger in Week 14:

#4. PlasticPads&IronMen (8-5, TONGO) vs. #5. Hired Goons (8-5, WBadger)
TONGO's the fourth seed, and fourth in points. Can't complain, especially given that he started off 2-4. Since then he's gone 6-1 and scored at least 106 points every week, averaging almost 140 over more than half the season. How's he done it? By nabbing Cam Newton on the cheap (I expect he's on a lot of playoff teams this year) and getting big returns from A.J. Green and ODBJ the last month or so. And the running backs, previously looking like a major weakness, have put up solid totals. And when you've got a top 5 QB and two explosive receivers, solid totals are really all you need at the position. He might be the scariest team in the playoffs.
Badger's gone the other way, jumping out to a 7-1 record before going 1-4 down the stretch. But like TONGO, his points ranking (5th) matches his seeding. There's no one reason for the second-half slump: Brady's been human lately, Cobb's been solid but has had very few big games, and Benjamin's been boom-and-bust. He may have gotten an exceedingly well-timed gift in the injury to Chris Johnson, though, which gives him a potential top 15 RB in David Johnson heading into the playoffs. A lot of fantasy football champions have won their titles on the backs of RBs who explode over the last few weeks of the season.
History: TONGO's played in all eight seasons, and this is his fourth trip to the playoffs--all in the last four years. This is Badger's fifth year, and his second trip to the playoffs, with last year being the first.

#3. 11 Angry Men (8-5, Yoda) vs. Clockwork Angels (8-5, Sedai)
A late rush got me near my own points record from last year (full-PPR adjusted), but I fell a little short. I nearly became just the second top scorer to end up as the #6 seed, along with Fiscal in 2011. Sedai was steady all year; he never dipped below .500 and he didn't win or lose more than two in a row until the very end of the season.
What's interesting about his team is that it puts up very decent totals, but has very little breakout potential (especially with Gronk out). Of his five RB/WR starters last week, only two of them ahve broken 20 points in any game this season, and one of those two only did it once. This is a team built to score a decent total almost every week, but it's not going to win many shootouts. In the regular season, the Angels only scored more than 124 points once, and never dipped below 84. In eight of the 13 regular season weeks, they scored between 95 and 120.
Put another way: if I hit near my projection, I almost certainly win. But we all know how often that doesn't happen.
History: Sedai's played every season, and this is his fourth trip to the playoffs, and his first time since 2011. He's yet to win a playoff game, though he scored 123 in a loss his last time out.
I've also played in all eight seasons and this is my sixth trip, my third time as the top scorer, and my fifth time in the top two. I've been boom-or-bust: every year I've either made the finals or missed the playoffs entirely. I'm trying to become the first back-to-back winner in league history.

Predictions
Pretty significant disparity in both points projections. It'd have been much more interesting if I'd lost (or Badger had won), in which case I'd be playing TONGO and he'd be playing Sedai. In that scenario both projections would be about 5 points apart. Instead, they're 25 and 13 apart, respectively.
That's an awful thick chalk line to cross. Nobody Knows Anything, as I repeat over and over every year, but the most likely outcome is that both favorites win. If they do, I think it'll be because TONGO's wideouts have big days again, and because Sedai's ceiling might not be quite enough.
Okay, some other stuff: thank you to all the teams who missed the playoffs. You guys were tough and fun to compete with. jiraffe, Frightened Inmate, and Pete all finished above .500 and only missed the playoffs on a points tiebreaker, and PW still had a path to the postseason as recently as last week. In all, 10 of the 14 teams were still in the hunt in Week 12, and that's really cool.
A big hat tip to our three new players, two of whom took the top two seeds! And Cole's 9th place finish in points was three spots higher than his position based on record, so that's not too shabby either.

I hope they get very, very scatched. So much scathing. I hope there's just scathing left and right.
Actually, I'd be looking pretty far ahead to say that, because we have playoff reseeding turned on so, if I win, I'll play Spaulding next week. If you and I play each other again, it'll be in MoFo Bowl VIII.
So, according to ESPN's consensus ranks, I'm rolling with the #1 receiver, the #1 RB, the #1 TE, and the #3 QB this week. I've got a higher-ranked player at every position other than DEF and Yahoo thinks I should win by 25+.
Somehow, I only find this mildly comforting. I expect to wake up in a cold sweat on Saturday fresh from nightmares about improbable Dalton-to-Bernard TDs.

Wow, Mark Ingram done for the year. Tough blow for Fabulous, and probably a lot of other teams in other leagues; like Newton, I suspect he's on a lot of playoff teams, given his performance relative to his draft position.

Was just going to post that. A game hasn't been played yet this week and I've already taken a big hit. I can't afford to lose another RB.
Well damn - I am pretty surprised my team hobbled into the playoffs this year. This is the most workmanlike team I have had in this league, and as Yoda said, with Gronk down, I don't see much breakout potential from any position. All I can hope for is solid numbers across the board, and perhaps a little bad luck for the Angry folk.

Yeah after the way I blew it big time in baseball this year, I came into the FFB season a broken owner, truly for the first time not care if I won or lost. I did my part and maintained my team fully, but I wasnt gonna do more. Best thing that happened as players that underperformed early on, that I normally would have moved (drop, trade) I instead kept, and now theyre keepers. Drafting Cam in rd 8, hell to the yeah. OBJ & Green are delivering, and my 3 RBs have been steady. Connor Barth has averaged 9.75 pts a game since returning to the Bucs, and thank you to whoever dropped Cincinnati.

Yeah, I forgot to mention: TONGO had a crazily normal (;)) number of transactions this year. Part of it was the league climate--we had just three trades all year--but I'm pretty sure this is the least tinkering he's done in any team, ever, baseball or football.
Anyway, post-Thursday-game update:
In the Badger/TONGO matchup, David Johnson scored 14.8 points, just a shade below his projection. But remember, the projected scores had up 9, so at some point Badger needs to overperform those (or hope TONGO's guys underperform theirs). From that view, I feel like anything around the projection is probably a positive for TONGO. He remains a (moderate) favorite.
In my matchup with Sedai, I had Carson Palmer and Arizona's kicker (Catanzaro). Palmer finish about a point shy of his projection, but Catanzaro finished 3-4 over his. Given that I can survive every player dropping 20% off their projections, this is an awfully good start. Especially since QBs are disproportionately high scorers; under the scenarios where I lose, "Carson Palmer has a bad game" is one of the factors in the majority of them, I'd say.
Wow, Seds had an uphill climb to begin with, but now Dalton's out for the game. That'll make things almost impossible.
CaM Newton puts up 20 fantasy points in the 1st quarter. I think I like him.
Wow, so many things had to break right for Mike to win...and so far, they have. Two late TDs, and Olsen left early. Lots of other players underperforming significantly. We're neck and neck.
Steelers have 33 points and neither Brown nor Bryant have scored. Only offensive TDs have gone to Williams, who Mike has. Wow.
Not looking good. Tate had his best game of the year and everyone on my team other than the kicker finished below their projections. Barring something crazy, that's probably gonna be it.
Wow! After Dalton went down with a thumb injury, I thought my MoFo fate was sealed...
Alas...we are playing fantasy football here.
My team continues to limp on...However, without a good QB, I am in trouble next week.
Yeah, congrats Mike. I won't pretend it isn't a bit of a stomach punch of a game; it was my team's lowest score since week 4, and it's definitely the biggest upset in league playoff history. It's the first time the top scoring team has been bounced in the first round (most have Byes, obviously, as it takes a weird confluence of events to achieve one but not the other), and it'll snap the three-year league streak of the top scoring team also being the champion.
Alas...we are playing fantasy football here.

Just picked up Hartline coming off three weeks with solid scores, and now he is sent to IR before I get to play him.
Blount also out this week. My injuries are beginning to rack up, my depth is looking pretty thin all of a sudden.
Looks like I wont have TJ Yeldon sunday, gotta love that timing. Ok, next man up. To go to waivers or bench, bench or waivers, hmm.
Guess Im going up against the artist formerly known as JirraffeJustin next week. Funny, looking at his roster it just doesnt exude a 10-3 record. Wait a minute, didnt this guy beat me in the finals last year?! Die Clowns Die!!

Tavon Austin with a nice game to lead things off for me.
Ivory and McFadden disappointed yesterday, almost 15 points or more off their projected. This will be close.
Dayum I like Cam! Another 40+ point game today, and he still has a quarter to go. Hes done that on more than a few occasions this year. :)
On the flipside, OBJ is goig into the 4th quarter with 0.00 fantasy points :eek: :(
OBJ recovered and scored 16.60 in the 4th quarter. Barring a 5% miracle it looks like Im going to the final, and Mike is struggling mightily vs The Empire. Who is Jonathan? Someone from the forum? Was hoping to get there against an old timer. ;)

It's gonna be Fabulous and TONGO in MoFo Bowl VIII.
Turns out my loss to Mike swung a fair bit: if I'd won I'd have played Spaulding and won by a couple of dozen points, and Fabulous and TONGO would've played each other (and TONGO would be the favorite--but not have things locked up--heading into tonight).
Hats off to Mike and Spaulding for finishing in the top four! And congrats to Jonathan and Rob for making it to the finals. This is TONGO's second trip to the MoFo Bowl, the last one being just two years ago.
I know how Darryl Hannah felt in Quest For Fire. Eighth year in the league and this is my second shot at winning. Would be nice to join Yoda as the only owners that have won the baseball and football leagues before.

The most dominant team in the league for 2015 was The Empire coached by Jonathan/Fabulous. So how did he end up with a 10-3 record and in the final? It all started at the same time for the two of us, round 8 of the draft. Jon grabbed Devonta Freeman who is the new sensational running back this year for Atlanta, and I grabbed Cam Newton (as a backup to Tony Romo). Cams Panthers are 14-0 this year and hes the #1 reason why averaging 29.15 fantasy points per game this entire season. Even his player number is 1 :)
It doesnt matter, all that counts is sunday. Empire has Drew Brees who only averages 5 points less. Brees is at home taking on Jacksonville sunday, good for the Empire, and Cam is @ Atlanta, bad for my Pads. QB advantage - The Empire.
WR1, and we both got some keepers in the draft! Jon got the awesome Julio Jones, and I got Odell Beckham Jr, BUT Beckham is suspended for sundays game due to the one man war he was fighting against the Cowboys. Nobody can replace him, and what would have been an intriguing WR1 matchup sunday becomes a huuuuge WR1 advantage to The Empire. (I'll be using Stefon Diggs :blush:)
WR2 isnt quite a mismatch, My Pads are sporting AJ Green, BUT the Empire has Calvin "Megatron" Johnson. Megatron has been quiet the past 2 weeks, but Im not stupid to think he's even capable of being quiet 3 game in a row. CJ in Detroit is up against a beatable 49rs secondary, and AJ is @ Denver who gives up the least to WRs in all the NFL. WR2 advantage The Empire.
RB1. Devonta has cooled since his hot first half, but so has my RB Chris Ivory. Ivory is @ New England who are focused on shutting him down, plus Bilal Powells been consistently leeching a noticable piece of business from him the past month. Devonta is at home vs a tough Panther defense, but honestly its RB1 advantage The Empire. The way this is going my team feels like that video of the singing bass on a mantle, who gets hit with a hammer everytime he does. By the end of the song that poor Bass has bandages, is in fear, and they planted dynamite in his mouth, but I digress...
One last analogy, the RB2 position looks like an episode of M.A.S.H. for us both. For me its either TJ Yeldon who is really hurt, only 50/50 chance to play, or Karlos Williams who is really hurt too. The Empire has turf toed Andre Ellington, and yknow, Im just gonna say RB2 advantage Plastic Pads & Iron Men! So there! hmph ;)
Tight End is finally some good news for my squad. I have Jordan Reed who is the 2nd highest rated fantasy TE this year, but Reed is @ Philly who are equally strong. Empire go with the Romoless Jason Witten. I gotta say advantage TE the Pads.
Swing slot Ill be using Darren Mcfadden and Empire will have Reuben Randle. DMC has been steady this season averaging near 11 fps per game, so you think advantage Pads BUT that OBJ suspension not only cost me a slot, but helped one of Jons because Randle will get more targets sunday. Crap!! Hm, ill say the swing slots a tie.
As for Kickers and Defense my Pads have Connor Barth vs Chicago and Cincinatti @ a Peytonless Denver :). Empire has Justin Tucker vs Pittsburgh and New England @ NYJ, both tough matchups, so I say these 2 peripheral positions advantage Pads.
So if I made a prediction, analysis, guess, or whatever Id say Jonathans Empire is gonna win the final. This is my 4th trip to the playoffs in a row, and Im wishing I never picked on Buffalos 4 failures now. Even the "karma" I feel isnt going my way :eek: My squads slogan is "Next Man Up", and if I win itll be due to some of these filler players blow up strong. My stars are in tough matchups.

Jons Fabulous Empire has Derek Carr as a backup, and he aint too shabby, I played him some his first year. Hes going up against San Diego, but Id have to say my Pads have the advantage at QB now. Dont know if its enough to level things off.

I probably shot myself in the foot. I just couldn't risk starting Brees, and Carr's TNF game couldn't come at a worse time. I figured he'd perform a little better than he has anyways, but it wasn't the case. I just have to hope that Brees doesn't play Sunday.
Yeah, interesting move there going with Carr. Puts up an average total; doesn't kill you, but doesn't help much either. TONGO a slight favorite, though a) Green has a tough matchup AND injury and b) Beckham's missing the game. That's huge. I feel like TONGO would be a significant favorite in a "normal" week, but it just so happens week 16 isn't going to be normal.

I just figured in a meaningless game, it would be pointless for Brees to play. Plus I made the switch at a time where I wasn't able to put Brees back in even if I wanted to. Now with Brees talking very confidently about playing, I have to take it on the chin.
Yeah, I'm not suggesting it was a terrible idea; it'd be really rough to find out Brees isn't playing late in the week. So there's just a lot of variables: the upside of Brees against the difference between Carr and some other late replacement, adjusted up or down based on what kind of total you think your opponent might force you to put up.
It might not end up mattering, though, because TONGO had two guys going during last night's game and both put up great totals: Jordan Reed had his best game of the year (and as someone starting Cousins in my money league championship: whoooo!), and the unusual decision to play another TE (Ertz) in the flex pays off. TONGO's projection is now 26 points higher. Not enough that one great game on the other side can't bring the matchup back within reach, though.

Yeah, I mean Carr has put up pretty good numbers all season. I figured at home against a poor San Diego team would result in a similar score that Brees would put up. Obviously he didn't do as well as I expected.
Yeah Jordan Reed had the best game of his career (so far) and Ertz went off too, and Im looking great going into todays games. Which means nothing :nope:
Julio Jones with a huge 70 yard touchdown. TONGO had built up such a margin that he's still the favorite after that, but this at least gives Fabulous a chance again.
Calvin Johnson with a really strong second half, capped off (for now, at least) with a TD. Suddenly (and thanks largely to Cam Newton's mediocre total thus far), we've got a game on our hands.

Ugh! Today everyone but my TEs were mediocre at best, actually below average. Im behind 11 points, but I have Stefon Diggs tonight, AJ Green & Cincinnatti tomorrow night, and Fab has Reuben Randle (who could go off too like Julio & Megatron). ugh....

..but Randle could go off huge, and Denver could shut down AJ Green tomorrow, some scary variables. Glad you didnt play Brees or youd have an additional 18 points, and Id be scared, like in terror.
Worrying about Green is reasonable; he's a little banged up, he's got a second string QB (and a large part of his recent production with him came on one huge play), and he's up against Denver, so it wouldn't shock me at all if he only put up a few points. But I'd only be worried if Randle puts up at least 10-12 tonight. Otherwise, even really lackluster totals from Green and Cincy get the job done tomorrow.
Reuben Randle comes up with 15 solid fps for Fabulous, and Stefon Diggs gave me 3.90.
So Fabulous is up 105.36 to my 83.78. I need 21.59 fantasy points from AJ Green and the Bengals tomorrow @Den :bawling: Theyre projected to get 19.41, so theyll have to surpass their projected.
AJ Green against Denvers D is ridiculous and I cant depend on my Defense to earn since...well, its a Defense and the slots flukey. So damn close...
Yeah, it's a tough one. Fair to call Fabulous a slight favorite now. Both Randle and Jones had 70+ yard TDs. At this point it looks very much like Odell's suspension could end up being the difference.
Definitely winnable, though. Cincy's put up 15 or more in three of their last four games, and if they score about that tomorrow night you won't need more than a few catches from Green. Best of luck.

I still think you will pull through. I'm still hating myself for playing it safe with Brees.
I might have made the same call as you regarding Brees. It would really have depended on if there was someone as good as Carr at least on waivers I couldve slotted in sunday if Brees didnt play. After all the Plantar talk and doubtful he'll be playing talk NOBODY expected Brees to have a 35 point game. Alas, this is where absentee owners have the advantage. :laugh:

Yeah, the best argument for playing Brees is that whoever you'd get as a backup for Sunday, while not as good as Carr, might not have been a huge step down from Carr. So the question is whether or not you'd trade the difference between Carr and the next-best option for the chance of playing Brees.
Anyway, TONGO has positively stormed through the playoffs to this point (140+ and the highest score in each of the two weeks), but this one's coming down to the wire.
Weird that I may get the third place trophy this season. Such a team of underdogs!
AJ Green touchdown yeah!!! Nice. Takes a load off the stress, but not certain.

TONGO, I can feel it... finally your championship title.
It helps that theyre only giving Green single coverage, as Gruden has said over and over and often. His droning doesnt bother me when hes bragging on my guy. Yeah Im feeling damn good right now. :)
Really, really close. TONGO's down just a point with a quarter left to go; you've gotta think Green gets more than that. But Cincy's defense could go down a bit, too. They can afford to give up a field goal without losing anything, but anything more than that and Green'll need a few more.
....and with CJ Anderson giving Denver their 2nd TD, shaving my Defense total, Fabulous has his 105.36 vs my now 101.98.

Yeah, that's a really big deal. 15 minutes ago I would've bet on you (if forced to pick), now I'd probably bet against you. But I wouldn't have been confident before, and I'm still not confident now. Only takes a couple of decent catches for Green to put you over the top.

Yeah, I was just gonna say: if the Cincy D can add a point or two, that makes Green's job way easier. Just needs one good catch, really.

Oh, easily. We've never had a MoFo Bowl within even 10 points. This could easily be the closest playoff game in MoFo history, and it wouldn't be shocking if it ended up being one of the closest games of any kind in league history, too.

Big deal...if Denver scores a TD, it's over, and barring a stat correction, Fabulous wins. If they kick a FG, though, the defense doesn't lose any points and Green really just needs one solid catch (which you have to assume he'll get at some point on the ensuing drive).

There's the field goal. The point range for defenses goes up to 20, so that doesn't hurt TONGO. He needs 1.39 points from Green in this next drive, which means one reception for just nine yards gets it done.
Denver only got a field goal :) Cincinnatis' turn now. Cmon Green get a catch....

Congrats Fabulous. You had the dominate team all year, well deserved. Tongo great year as always buddy.
What's really interesting is that he was a freight train the first half of the year, but a lot of that was Freeman, and when he came back down to earth (it had to happen), he really limped into the playoffs. TONGO, on the other hand, was on fire around the end of the year. At that point, I would've preferred his team to any but my own, and maybe to my own, too, given the way Newton was playing.
Oh, and just to torture myself: if I hadn't lost to Mike, I'd have cruised in the semis and possibly won in the finals (depends on which defense I played)--maybe by an even closer margin than the actual finals! So at least I got spared that nailbiting.
Speaking of which: just how close was it?
Obviously, it was the closest MoFo Bowl by far; none of the others were within 10 points (though in the broad scheme of things, 10 points is pretty close).
It was also the closest playoff game, beating the previous record of 2.40 points (Pete beating Jay in the Semis in 2012).
It was also tied for the 22nd closest game of any kind in league history, and it was the fourth-closest game all season. Wow!

Well, stat corrections are up, and none of them effect the two teams in the finals, so we're clear. Congrats to Fabulous, and to TONGO for putting together a really scary team in the end that, if not for Beckham's suspension, probably takes this thing down. Tough break, but really well played man. :up:
I talked to Fabulous and he's doing some traveling, so it'll be a few weeks until he gets his trophy and we get our picture of him gloating with it. :D Will keep you updated.
