From what you said, Sherlock is the first thing which comes to mind as it almost always seems to be paired with Doctor Who by fans. Especially if they're not from the UK.
I'd recommend The Goldbergs because it's funny with a few great characters. If you've not seen Buffy The Vampire Slayer or Angel, then both/either of those.

If you like things like Doctor Who, try the fabulous Warehouse 13. :D

Actually that's not a bad suggestion.

Are people just recommending shows they like or shows they think are like the ones mentioned?

Was there a common theme we should be hitting? BBC and Sitcoms are what I went off.

Glad to hear somebody else mirror that sentiment. I wouldn't say the show got bad, it's just evolved to where I quit watching. Love his humor, but just not the same show for me anymore.

Auf wiedersehen Pet!
One of the best British series ever made.
A bunch of construction workers from all over Britain head off in search of work to foreign lands during Thatcher's Britain.

Arabian Nights (TV Mini-Series 2000) - starring the incomparable Mili Avital.
Gulliver's Travels (TV Mini-Series 1996) - starring Ted Danson.
Both are very imaginative, with very good special effects and benefit from great acting.

If you like Supernatural, try Grimm.

It occurred to me the other day that I should've mentioned Grimm in relation to Supernatural. Good pick, mistique.

Sherlock (If you are Doctor Who fan you'll love this show, I personally think Sherlock is superior to Doctor Who in every way except the Sci-Fi aspect as Sherlock is what you'd expect it to be, a crime mystery)
Game of Thrones
The Walking Dead
Dexter (The Showtime series not the Dexter's Lab Cartoon lol) is much darker than any of the shows you mentioned but I always recommend people to watch it, one of the most interesting premises for a TV show I've ever seen and the execution is brilliant (a couple of seasons excluded)
also I personally don't watch it but I've heard Grimm is very similar to Supernatural.
