CBS has apparently poured a lot of money into this extravagant action adventure series that I was a little hesitant checking out as my last exposure to this character was the dreadful 1984 film starring Helen Slater, but the pilot for this new series had generous portions of excitement, laughs, state of the art special effects and even some sexual chemistry. Melissa Benoist, who did an unmemorable season on Glee, seems to be a nice fit for the title role, a character who has been re-thought for this series. According to this teleplay, Supergirl/Kara was an older cousin of Superman who was sent to earth to protect him, which was news to me. Almost immediately, our heroine has found herself in battle with contemporary villains as well as villains established through our girl's legacy, who might be the springboard for some long term story arcs if the show lasts. Possible romantic interests for the star have been set up with Jeremy Jordan (Smash) and Mechad Brooks, who is playing Jimmy Olsen, now referred to as "James" and I also loved Laura Benanti as Karas birth mother and loved the irony of the casting of Helen Slater who appeared in one scene as her adoptive mother. Couldn't get behind Calista Flockhart's Miranda Priestly rip-off as Kara's boss; however, her scenes were minimal. The show is going to need "super" ratings to justify its expense, but the pilot was a lot of fun.

I enjoyed the "Supergirl" pilot. I watched "Glee" on and off, but I have no memory of Melissa Benoist in it. I've been a fan of Jeremy Jordan ever since I saw him in "SMASH", so I hope his character sticks around for a while. It's strange seeing Jimmy Olsen as an adult, but I guess I'll get used to it.

"Quite a few sources [TheVerge.com, Cinneblend.com, Variety.com and more] have reported the cost of the Supergirl pilot was $14 million!"

Wow. Well I was impressed with their vfx and I guess this explains why!!!
I wonder if they have the workflow now to cheaply replicate the effects from episode to episode.

Although the writing could have been better I'll be tuning in again next week. I like that they gave us a little tease of her in a skimpy outfit.

Melissa Benoist was only on Glee for one season and she was terrible.

I was a little more thrown by Jimmy Olsen now being black than being an adult.

I guess I've seen enough character changes over the years that Jimmy Olsen being black didn't bother me at all. But he's always been this young kid, kind of wimpy and immature. This new Jimmy Olsen just seems too old, mature, and responsible to be the same person.

Supergirl is the young and naive one now. They need jimmy to be older so that it would balance her out.

I have a theory that you can renew any old comic book franchise for TV or Movies by simply adding strategically-placed seams to costumes!
(Nolan's Batman Trilogy, Captain America, Man of Steel - it's all about the seams!)

I watched the premiere and thought it was fun. I am curious about where this show will take us.

Just wrapped up episode two and I am really liking the somewhat realistic path they are taking this character on. I love that the things she did in the pilot she didn't do right and that she really hasn't got this super hero thing down yet. I like the fact that she acknowledged and accepted the criticism and went to her pals James and Winn for help. I loved all the mentioning of the competition between Cat's paper and the Daily Planet and our girl's comparison to Superman...I wonder if we are going to see a crossover episode down the line where characters from National City meet characters from Metropolis? Loving this show.

Maybe I was becoming burnt out on dark, broody superhero stuff, because this has been a fun breath of fresh air. The second episode had a strong emotional component I wasn't really expecting from a show like this, and much of that is due to the surprisingly strong performance of the lead. This girl is a perfect fit for this role. I have my DVR recording this weekly! Love it!

Yeah,Melissa Benoist has been such an eye-opener in this role...she spent a season on Glee where she barely made a blip on the radar, but I am loving her in this role.

Just watched episode 3 and this show continues to deliver...the sexual tension between Melissa Benoist and Mehcad Brooks is off the charts...I hope they don't give into it too quickly, make us work for it. The only thing I'm not liking about this show is Calista Flockhart as Kat Grant, they can lose her.

I think it's odd how episode 2 was "stronger together" and episode 3 was "all by myself I don't need help from no man!"

I think the Superman stuff was fun for 5 minutes, but eventually this show needs to stand on its own and not constantly reference him. The entirety of the last episode and the existence of James are just "We're like superman but better" instead of being its own thing.

Agree with Ursa here. We get the message, so let's get on with the next batch of story elements. This past episode, while still good, had too much in-your-face exposition about what Supergirl stands for.

Show me, don't tell me. :)

Just finished episode 5 and despite everything that's going on with this show, I hate to admit it, but what's keeping tuning in every week is the convoluted love triangle between Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), Mehcad Brooks (James), and Jeremy Jordan (Win). What I'm loving about it is that I don't know which I guy I want her to be with.

I like her with Win. I think James is too old and mature for her. She just seems to be a better match with Win.

Last night's episode was great! I couldn't find a screenie of the scene where she got all angry and blasted RT with her heat vision, so i had to settle for this. That scene was awesome!

I thought it was the weakest episode so far. I liked parts of it but general lang was a total joke.

"Let the robot go!!! Stop hurting it!"
"What did you do??? You let it go and unleashed it on the city! This is all your fault"

I laughed for a while at how stupid the character and writing was.

Just finished episode six, which was very good but I'm a little conflicted about the character of Lucy Lane (Jenna Dewan Tatum)...I do buy her as viable romantic competition for James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) but not as this military hot shot who is out to destroy Supergirl, not to mention that she can't see through a pair of eyeglasses either. There's also a viable chemistry between Chyler Leigh and Peter Facinelli that I hope is explored further. The attempt to humanize Calista Flockhart's character by making her mother even a bigger bitch than she is didn'ty really work. I'm still not feeling Calista Flockhart on this show.

The unabashed corniness and sentimentality of episode 7 was almost redeemed by the ending...almost. I just about lost my lunch when Supergirl's powers returned with little or no justification just because the man she loves was falling down an elevator shaft...seriously?

It was explained earlier in the episode that she would get her powers back with a jolt of adrenaline.

Absolutely LOVED episode 10...several juicy reveals including further exploration into the James/Kara/Win triangle and a surprising look at Win's family tree. Love Cat's hatred of Lois Lane and am hoping that a face to face between the two might happen at some point because the only time I can tolerate Calista Flockhart is when Cat is bitching about Lois Lane. Also great to see Henry Czerny on my TV screen...really missed him ever since he was killed off of Revenge.

Just wrapped episode 13 where a lot of important stuff seemed to happen...I think there are going to be permanent repercussions regarding a lot of things that happened in this episode. Solid performances by Peter Facinelli, Chyler Leigh, and the severely underrated Laura Benanti really helped here.

Most recent episode with that whole 'dark whatever' thing with the hallucinations was boring as hell. I skipped a lot of that episode, a first for me in the series. But the second half was great.

"Falling" was really well done. It was great to see the homage to Superman III, with Supergirl flicking the nuts at the bottles of booze at the bar. Benoist is just slaying it week after week, and I think her acting elevates this show from a decent superhero show to something really engaging. She really got to flex her acting muscles this week!

Here is the scene this week's episode payed homage to:

I think you mean the black mercy, which has been around in Super comics for decades now. It first showed up in 1985 in "The Man Who Has Everything" by the legendary writer Alan Moore. Super cool creation, and it was awesome to see it appear in Supergirl. I thought the blac mercy episode was a bit rushed, and would have been better served as a two-parter with a cliffhanger, as the resolution seemed forced. It was still a good episode, though.

Pretty sure the visions are dreams, and not hallucinations, as well.

I'm liking this show. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it is better than what the other superhero shows are putting out this season. I really liked this past episode, if only because it's great to have the villain of the week be Supergirl herself. Benoist is a solid actress. Hopefully this momentum keeps up for the season.

Every now and then, it seems like TPTB actually listen to viewers because my # 1 complaint about this show was actually addressed...they got rid of Calista Flockhart.

I'm not a Supergirl fan either.

Also, for the notion of "lots of media does this all the time": UH-UH - this is far worse than anything I've ever seen; overly long diatribes, ironically hilarious messaging, unironic cringe-educing pandering, etc.

Most of the ideas they push don't even make sense within the implied story. The writers for this show are so retarded. I'm so glad I didn't have to deal with this garbage back when I was a kid and thought superhero stuff was cool. Imagine growing up and having everything targeted to sell you a narrative. Note: I would also dislike this if it had any other viewpoint. It's just too preachy and lacks any subtlety. For the most disgraceful works of art with messaging, are for those who already agree with said messaging, and just want nothing but validation for their viewpoints.

Seriously, watch it. Getting a writing gig for Supergirl must be the easiest job in the world. I mean, JEEZ, I see better sh*tposts on 4chan than this nonsense.

Supergirl might actually be the most dropped show in history

I challenge you to find anything where as many people have said "f*ck this, I quit." And yes, this show does have twice as many people who bailed as The Walking Dead.

Imagine making a series that a whopping 13 million people were interested enough to give a chance and then 11 million of them balked at it after viewing.

For the record, the show initially ran on CBS prime time, and was later moved to The CW.

That said, I cannot STAND this show now, and I really liked the first season, which was spunky and fun. Now it just drops SJW anvils on viewer's heads.

Yea, I think the idea when it moved, if I remember, was that the numbers were kind of low for a CBS show, but would have been a high water mark for The CW at the time.

Right. And it's a great fit for CW anyway.

I never watched it. I just assumed it would devolve in any number of ways, and I find I can enjoy one or two of those shows at a time (for me, it's Arrow).
