View Full Version : What personal superstition you have ?
I have been carrying my cash in the same old wallet for years because I have earned a lot of money since I began using it and feel that it has been lucky for me .

I have no superstitions, however, I have been carrying a Cambodian bill (kip) although I noticed yesterday it wasn't there when I was trying to take out all my American dollars.

Whenever I see one magpie, I'll say "Hello Mr. Magpie, how's your wife and children?" to be honest, I've always found the magpie song quite accurate.
I also have this thing called Raynaud's, so my hands or more or less always blue, or at least cold, so I like to believe that "cold hands, warm heart" superstition :p
My mother has absolutely loads though:
She refuses to let anyone put shoes on a table
She won't have pictures or statues (or anything similar) of birds in the house
She won't have blue things touching green things
Like me, she salutes magpies
She has to have any slippers facing the fire, always
She won't let anyone open umbrellas indoors.

Shoes on a table? That's a superstition? It sounds like common sense for health and hygiene. I wouldn't let anyone put their shoes on a table either. Shoes stay on the floor (or on the steps or in a specified shoe holding area.)
I can't think of any actual superstitions I have, but I do talk to my car sometimes as if it was a person or an animal (like a horse). I usually only do this after a long trip or if I've taken "her" through snow or deep puddles (like she's worked hard), or if we had a near miss almost-accident on the road.

coming to mothers , my mother has this superstition about not giving a birthday party before the birthday .
for example , if my birthday falls on monday and i want to give my party before it happens---on either saturday or sunday ( just one or two days before )---because no one has time for partying on monday obviously , my mom puts her foot down and totally opposes it saying that giving birthday parties before birthdays gives bad luck .

That would be a very bad idea. Don't walk under a ladder, either. Hmmm, there are soooo many. Let me think . . . You don't want to break a mirror. Make sure all the candles in your home have a burnt wick. I love black cats, though. I've had at least one black cat in my life, since I started high school. If you know my age, you know that's been a loooong time, now. I've been called a witch, more than 100 times in my life. For several reasons, too, but that's just silly. ;)

You should only pick up a found penny if it's on heads. If it's on tails, it's bad luck.
I also agree with not walking under ladders, and you shouldn't step on lines and cracks in the sidewalk.

That head's up thing wasn't a part of the saying, way back when, so I don't use it. Besides, it sounds stupid, trying to work that line in on the little poem. :p

Finding money in and of itself is considered good luck - so the "luck" is already fulflilled by the discovery.
Once you pick it up, you now have more money - no superstition involved there except for the prophesy that good luck will continue for the rest of the day.
But the prophetic part follows logic and human psychology... by finding money you've found some good luck. That could change your attitude from negative to positive which will alter your perception to see more opportunities and interpret events as positive or having potential as opposed to viewing things negatively.

I see the finding-a-penny motto as more a practice in positive thinking (based on an already positive event) than a superstition.
Good luck or bad luck is really a decision in thinking.

Believing in good luck is the superstition. A lot of people know that it's a word, with a definition, but they don't actually believe in it. They don't believe that it has anything to do with their life. To literally see a penny, and get excited because you just found a 24 hour good luck charm . . . Yep, that's a superstition.

True enough. I guess I fall more into the former crowd. When I find a penny I get excited because I now have one more penny.
Now, what if I view that penny's appearance as a sign from the universe that abundance is all around us, and the penny's message is: to increase the flow of abundance into my life, I just need to become more tuned into it, more open to it, and embrace the momentum of the universe? Is that superstition?

I used to have an Evil Dead tee shirt. I wore it under a nicer shirt on my very first date. The date went well, and we dated for a few months, nothing serious. The next time I asked someone else out, I made sure to wear the shirt again, and I dated that girl for about 6 months. I kept wearing the shirt on first dates til it finally didn't fit and was fraying. All told, I had that shirt for about ten years. I considered it lucky. I no longer have the shirt, and my luck has definitely soured as of late. Coincidence? :D

That's the attitude I've been talking about. "Luck", whether viewed as good or bad, is all a matter of perspective.

Superstition is all about attracting or ensuring good luck, and repelling or negating bad luck.
There are many versions to the following story, but it demonstrates that "luck" is all a matter of perspective...
The Taoist Farmer:
This farmer had only one horse, and one day the horse ran away. The neighbors came to condole over his terrible loss. The farmer said, "What makes you think it is so terrible?"
A month later, the horse came home--this time bringing with her two beautiful wild horses. The neighbors became excited at the farmer's good fortune. Such lovely strong horses! The farmer said, "What makes you think this is good fortune?"
The farmer's son was thrown from one of the wild horses and broke his leg. All the neighbors were very distressed. Such bad luck! The farmer said, "What makes you think it is bad?"
A war came, and every able-bodied man was conscripted and sent into battle. Only the farmer's son, because he had a broken leg, remained. The neighbors congratulated the farmer. "What makes you think this is good?" said the farmer.
Taoism is awesome. I'm a sort of a believer. Or else how could I have films like Plan 9 From Outer Space on my Top 100. ;)
I never turn the page of my calendar unless it's a new month. I turn my mirror to face the wall each night. Never put new shoes on a table even when they are still boxed.

I'm thrilled if I find a penny on the street (which I did today). I always call it a lucky penny. Makes no sense, I know. And nowhere near as good as the $50 bill I recently found.

Swedes have a weird one about manholes. If you step on one that's marked with a K, no problem. But if you step on one marked with an A, you have to spit 3 times or it's bad luck.

Shared knives don't care who they cut.
Gifting knives without some sort of coin changing hands is said to sever the friendship (don't worry, I'm well aware it's usually one friend being an arsehole and the other friend not having any of it that severs friendships  I just really like the feel of that superstition.) Origin? The East, I think. The mediterraneans did a lot for that, too (my granny drummed all that into me, the only superstition that stuck). Added all kinds of addendums to the initial superstition. The shared knife thing is uncannily true (for me, although I can explain that with common sense too, but that's not half as romantic. :) )

Don't have any now but when i was very young i wouldn't play in a match without a certain pair of football (soccer) boots. They ended up seriously worn out so my mum bought me new ones but i refused to wear them believing those were my lucky boots, i constantly argued about it and even didn't play a few times before i ended up just taking the new boots as well as the old ones in my bag which i'd use . They ended up too small for me causing me to get a blister on my heel which is when i admitted to my mum i had been using them all that time, she was mortified haha. Funnily enough my performance didn't drastically change with my new boots and i haven't bothered with anything like that since.

Whenever I eat chicken nuggets at Mcdonalds I peel the skin off of the first one and eat it, then eat the second one normally, and repeat the process until their all gone.
