When an actor is offered a role on a television show, one sure fire sign that the character is popular with audiences and is going to remain a permanent fixture on the canvas is when that character is given a romantic interest. And when the boyfriend or girlfriend becomes part of the canvas, that is also a very good thing and can be credited to the actor and his chemistry with his co-star. The following are my favorite television boyfriends and girlfriends:

Dondre Whitfield's winning smile was a big part of his charm as the young man smitten with Vanessa Huxtable (Tempest Bledsoe) to the point that straight A student Vanessa's grades began to suffer. Robert was first introduced on the show when Vanessa threw a Halloween party at her house for the express purpose of meeting Robert, not knowing that Robert was crushing on her as well.

Actually, he didn't leave Rose then. At least, not for good. He came back -- and then the person he was hiding from showed up (played by the guy who played Jerry's dad on Seinfeld) -- but he finally got arrested and Miles didn't have to hide anymore and he could stay with Rose.
BUT -- it gets worse. On their spinoff show, The Golden Palace, where three of the Golden Girls worked in a hotel, Rose discovered that Miles was actually cheating on her and in love with another woman. Then Rose, trying to be a good person, allowed Miles and this woman to get married in her hotel! While Rose watched the proceedings in the hotel kitchen through a window in the door!

John Corbett's breezy charisma and effortless sex appeal was utilized to maximum advantage as the long time boyfriend of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker). Aiden was a simple guy with simple tastes and pretty much the polar opposite of Carrie, which I guess had a lot to do with why they were such a great couple.

The Golden Palace did stupid things. It only lasted one season. They also tried killing off Stan, Dorothy's ex-husband, but apparently Stan wasn't really dead -- he was (like Miles) going into hiding and fleeing the country. But they still held a funeral for Stan, even though he wasn't dead.
I didn't like him. I don't like the actor. It has nothing to do with what happened.
Oh. Well, I liked him. I remember thinking it was upsetting that Carrie and him were breaking up. I think Carrie needed a more complicated man like Big. She wasn't into safe, easy, drama-free relationships. She thrives on drama. That's how I think she is.

Big, Sex and the City
http://theredlist.com/media/database/films/tv-series/comedy-drama/1990/sex-and-the-city/007-sex-and-the-city-theredlist.jpg
Before playing Peter Florrick on The Good Wife, Chris Noth lit up the screen with a character who I loved one minute and wanted to smack in the mouth the next. Big was the extremely wealthy and mysterious part-time lover of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) who was obsessed with Carrie, but couldn't make a commitment to her either. Yet, every time Carrie got serious about someone else and was ready to commit, Big would swoop in and make some grand gesture that would make Carrie re-think her life. I loved the mystery regarding Big...the show was also ambiguous about what, if anything, he did for a living, but I hated the way he wouldn't stick and stay either. I used to love the way he would slither up to the front of Carrie's building in his stretch limo and dramatically roll down the window and flash her that smile with all three hundred of his teeth.

Drop dead gorgeous Jason Lewis made a serious impact on this show as Smith, a long time boyfriend of Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall). Smith was one of television's best boyfriends and I sometimes wondered whether or not he was too good for Samantha. He put up with a lot of crap from Samantha but always put her first in their relationship. The only thing more important to Smith than Samantha was his sobriety...he was a recovered alcoholic/addict and extremely serious about staying sober. He loved Samantha so much that when she learned she had cancer and started losing her hair to chemo, he shaved his head as well.

I never knew about Baxendale's pregnancy but I don't think it would have been an issue regarding the character's tenure on the show...once the decision to write a character off a show has been made, there are so many options available to the writers that don't necessarily involve changing the character's behavior...personally, I think Emily was doomed from jump and never had any longevity on the canvas and her departure was just a matter of time.

The late Glenn Quinn alternately gleaned laughs and hisses from audiences as Mark, the slick and not-too-bright thug who began a long on again off again romance with Becky (Lecy Goranson, Sarah Chalke). Mark was initially just kind of creepy but when he became a permanent part of the canvas, the writers concentrated on his lack of book smarts and the character became a lot more fun.

Merritt Wever was wonderful as a girl who grew up with Fat Schmidt (Max Greenfield) who re-enters his life when he's thin even though she's not, severely complicating his relationship with CeCe (Hannah Simone)...I loved Elizabeth because she treated Schmidt exactly the same way she did when he was fat, even if he couldn't do the same and as much as she wanted to resume a relationship with Schmidt, she would not let him mjake her feel bad for not losing the weight that he did.

Jonathan Jackson plays one of the best boyfriends currently on network television. Avery was first romantically involved with Scarlett (Clare Bowen) but when that romance ended, he began a long and rocky relationship with superstar Juliette Barnes (Hayden Pannetiere)...neither Scarlett nor Juliette deserve Avery, who has stepped up as a single dad since Juliette has shown no interest in raising the child they conceived together.

Patrick Warburton was funny as hell as the dumb-as-a-box-of-rocks boyfriend of Elaine Benis (Julia Louis Dreyfuss), who other than being seriously sexually attracted to each other, seemed to have nothing else in common and didn't know what to do with each other when they weren't in bed.

I don't know most of these, but Richard Burke was a great character in Friends. I wasn't so happy when he reappeared a few seasons later to complicate things.
Interesting list. Haven't seen alot but Adriana would have been alot higher for me. If i was to do a worst list there's a good chance Meadows boyfriend Noah would take the top spot. Glad to see Dylan as well love his relationship with Phil. Richard, Kurt and Susan are great choices too.
Personally i hated Emily in Friends and it had nothing to do with getting between Ross and Rachel, their relationship was one of the worst parts of the show and was dragged on way too long. I just felt she was bland and unfunny, her presence just brought down one of the best Seasons for me.

He's really good and underrated on the show as Gideon said as well. I felt he really improved Dianes character who was getting a little stale at that point.

Kenny, The Cosby Show
http://thecosbyshow.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Kenny-aka-Bud-played-by-Deon-Richmond.png
Deon Richmond was a major scene-stealer on this show as the pint-sized boyfriend of Rudy Huxtable (Keisha Knight Pulliam). Initially, Kenny was so whipped by Rudy that she called him "Bud" and Kenny just allowed it. Kenny finally told Cliff that his name wasn't "Bud" and Claire had a "talk" with Rudy regarding her treatment of Kenny. Rudy and Kenny became close despite some sexist talk and behavior from Kenny that he learned from his older brother (a character we never saw). Even after their relationship ended and Rudy fell for someone else, Kenny and Rudy remained friends, though I don't think Kenny ever stopped loving Rudy, even though he wouldn't admit it in a million years.

Nathan, Will & Grace
http://www.infobarrel.com/media/image/99193_max.jpg
Woody Harrelson was introduced during season three as a boyfriend for the romantically challenged Grace Adler (Debra Messing). Nathan was basically a bum living off an insurance settlement but was a sexual god who kept Grace's knees weak, not to mention the knees of Will (Eric McCormack), Jack (Sean Hayes), and Karen (Megan Mullally), who were all as attracted to Nathan as Grace was. I loved Nathan because he was smarter than he appeared on the surface, had a wicked sense of humor and accepted Grace's friendship with Will and Jack without question and was completely at ease with their flirting. I may be in the minority here, but I liked Nathan even more than the guy Grace eventually married, Dr. Leo (Harry Connick Jr.).

Bebe Neuwirth won two Emmys for her work as the tightly wound psychiatrist brought onto the canvas as a romantic interest for fellow psychiatrist Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammar). Initially, Frasier just considered Lilith a colleague until one day while they were in the bar, just like the classic movie cliche, Lilith took off her glasses and took her hair out of a bun...Frasier was a goner.
This list was fun and brought back some wonderful memories for me. I will be skipping honorable mentions as I think I've covered the material that I wanted to cover.

David Healy, Roseanne

Long before The Big Bang Theory, Johnny Galecki made a name for himself as this beyond adorable character. True addicts of this show might remember that when this character was originally introduced on the show, his name was "Kevin." "Kevin" was the little brother of Becky's boyfriend Mark (Glenn Quinn, see #20), who Mark and Becky paid to babysit DJ (Michael Fishman) so they could go out. Galecki returned to the show later and was now named David and found himself falling hard for Becky's sister, Darlene (Sara Gilbert). David, of the sad eyes and puppy dog hair, was sweet and quiet and completely devoted to Darlene, despite the fact that Darlene treated him like dirt most of the time but threatened him with physical harm if he even glanced at another girl, like new next door neighbor Molly (Danielle Harris) for instance. Galecki made David sweet and likable and made you want a boyfriend just like him. I loved when Mark and Becky returned to the house after running off to get married and David said, "Thanks to you, I'm now related to my girlfriend." I loved David, even if Darlene didn't always love him as much as I did.
Hope you enjoyed the list.

Congrats on finishing this list, Gideon. I really liked this one and your last few choices were great. I loved Lilith, but that's probably got as least as much to do with my desire for Bebe Neuwirth as it did the character.

Yeah, Bebe Neuwirth brought this smoldering sex goddess quality to the character of Lilith that you could always see bubbling underneath the power suits and the bun...not to mention that flawless dancer's body.
