Scientists Just Spotted Something in Space That "an Alien Civilization Might Build." (http://mic.com/articles/126727/scientists-just-spotted-something-in-space-that-an-alien-civilization-might-build)

Scientists, however, are increasingly feverish over a new Kepler Space Telescope discovery between the constellations Cygnus and Lyra. A series of irregularities between a star and the light it emits has led at least one expert to conclude that the star is being orbited by a number of strange objects, which could be more than just asteroids.

"This looked like something you would expect an alien civilization to build," Jason Wright, an astronomer from Penn State University, told (http://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2015/10/the-most-interesting-star-in-our-galaxy/410023/) the Atlantic this week. Wright added that the "swarm of megastructures" could be related to be extraterrestrial efforts to collect and farm energy from the star.

Beginning in 2009, Kepler began a four-year period of observation of the area between Cygnus and Lyra. The work left scientists with no doubt that even if aliens weren't whizzing past on Jetsons-style aerocars, the region was worth increased exploration.

The observation period yielded a number of periodic dips in the light emitted by stars. Spotting the dips has historically been how stargazers have identified distant planets. The dips are caused when the planet traverses the path between the star and Kepler, causing an irregularity — essentially a quasi-eclipse. But this star, observers noticed, had an unusual light pattern, suggesting a large amount of matter was closely orbiting a mature star, which normally would have enough mass to engulf such objects in a flash.

So much data was collected that computers proved insufficient. Scientists at Yale University (http://news.yale.edu/2010/12/16/citizen-scientists-join-search-earth-planets])launched a program called Planet Hunters (http://www.planethunters.org/) in 2010, which opened Kepler's data to the public in a challenge to crowdsource the patterns and sleuth out the hidden worlds they revealed. It was these planet hunters who flagged the unfamiliar — unique — light pattern.

Space Anomaly Gets Extraterrestrial Intelligence Experts' Attention (http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/15/world/extraterrestrial-intelligence-anomaly/)

The California-based astronomer, who's been working on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence for about 10 years, called the findings "very atypical."

"This is one of maybe only two or three times we've been contacted by an astronomer who says there's something we don't understand," he said. "It is a very strange object."

Siemion submitted a series of proposals to use telescopes -- including the Green Bank Telescope (https://science.nrao.edu/facilities/gbt/) in West Virginia, which the National Radio Astronomy Observatory calls the premier single-dish radio telescope -- to look deeper into the anomaly.

The Green Bank telescope would be a good fit, given that SETI involves the search for extraterrestrial intelligence using, of all things, radio waves. According to Siemion, "There are particular types of radio waves that as far as we know can only be produced by technology."

"The advantage is that it's very easy to distinguish," he said. "Lots of the galaxies produces radio waves. If we see lots of energy in an area, it's an unmistakable marker of technology."

Scientists Can't Explain This -- Say We Need to Consider the Possibility of Aliens (http://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-can-t-explain-the-bizarre-mass-of-objects-orbiting-a-distant-star)

Been reading up on this since this morning. Seems kinda exciting.

And only a week after they found liquid running water on Mars which points to the possibility of life there too.

One theory they've stated is that this could be caused by captured comets from a passing star. It wasn't even that long ago, really, when scientists couldn't even conceive of hot Jupiters in other solar systems. This is probably another instance of a natural phenomenon they did not anticipate and that is all. It seems kind of irresponsible to be throwing out suggestions of alien civilizations, especially at such an early stage. These researchers probably need more funding, is a more likely theory than E.T.

I have no doubt that in the vastness of the universe there is life. I sometimes wonder if there is some other world, some other civilization, some other intelligent race like our own, who write what we call science fiction, and look up at the sky and wonder..just wonder...

God... well, if they're hoping for us, maybe we should stop hoping for them. Do we really need a universe full of people like Earthlings?

It'll be funny if we find life somewhere else.

A lifeform that had no idea we existed, and has evolved without us... and the first thing we will do is try to police it, and "look after" it.
We've done it with everything else.

On one hand, I hope we don't find life because we'll just screw it up... and on the other, I hope we do because it will mean the end of current religion. Religion, the cause of every war since forever.

And what if the aliens actually police us or cause wars with us?

Some people theorize aliens actually are policing us -- they believe Earth is really a prison planet.

Could well be... I would laugh my ass off if it turned out to be true.
