Enjoy.

100. Cuckoo

The cast is awesome, particularly the on-screen chemistry from the two leading men. Add to that you can root for both characters and at the same time. Well what can one want from this funny and amazingly written gem, I was pleasently surprised at how well Cuckoo addresses modern families and relationships through comedy. We've come a long way from the classic stigmata of working man, stay at home wife and kids, etc. Well, Cuckoo gives us a pleasent look at one type of modern family environment and relationships, that either many have experienced or will very likely experience themselves at some point in their journey of this modern yet ever changing world.

99. Humans

Humans is an unexpectedly good show. The reason for this is that it's understated in the technology and emphasis the humanity. The cast are all from the UK and mostly unknown and it gets us to know the characters more.

This series is dark and brooding. It raises more questions than answers with the interaction between the artifical intelligence synths and the humans who employ them to do ordinary household tasks.

The origins of the core group of synths is a mystery that weaves through the course of this series. There is some limited action, violence and beneath all that big question about the ghost in the machine.

98. The take

Dark, gritty, heartbreaking even tear jerking with a really sad experience for all women, and even sadder consequence of it. The take gives Britain a stepping stone that we can make good television. Brilliant tv with a good cast.

97. Jonathan strange and Mr norrell

The first episode started out a little slow, developing the characters and establishing the plot. I was sufficiently entertained and interested so I watched the second episode. By the mid-point of the second episode the pace of the story quickly picked up. The main characters feel real, as people, collegues and competitors. The Magic seems natural too. I found it very entertaining without it being too forced or fantastic. The acting, costumes, locations, photography and CGI are all first class.

96. Catastrophe

Right from the very start, it grabs you and does not let go.

It's a TV series comedy, but really it is so much more, and it has a not-real/ real-life quality about it that is most appealing and entertaining.

Rep for Catastrophe (a new series of which starts soon) and Humans, which I liked but not as much as I'd hoped. I wouldn't mind seeing the original to see how they tackled it.

95. Poldark

Poldark is a most promising series with a lively young cast and strong storyline - who can resist an eternal triangle = against the dramatic backdrop of the cornish coast.

It is visually stunning and the period enhances the feel of the young man returning from war to an uncertain future and trying to reserect the family fortune in a disused mine.

94. Wolf Hall

This wonderful drama just held me spellbound from the opening sequence to the closing shots of the first episode. Mark rylance was just mesmerising, from the moment he appeared he just held me in thrall. The atmospheric lighting, the scenery, the period clothing, all a wonder, but the acting! It was a genuine privilege to see something that will be talked about for years to come.

I felt I was there, in the dark recessed corridors of power, with betrayal working around every corner. Thomas Cromwell is just a fixture in our national DNA it was almost scary seeing him brought to life, but he, along with henry, laid the foundations for a Britain which was sure of its identity and purpose. Wonderful simply simply wonderful.

Having now viewed the entire series, all I can say is that it's a masterpiece. I felt drawn into the dark intrigue around the investigation of Anne boleyn, and her execution scene was without doubt one of the most realistic and best acted scenes I have ever seen.

93. The missing

This is a very slow, drawn out drama. This programme is about people, relationships, how a moment can change your life forever.

How people react so differently to situations and how it affects them. The actor's take on a journey, Tony, so blinded by guilt and rage that at times you have no empathy for him whatssoever until you reflect on his loss and wonder how you yourself would react.

I find the acting brilliant and I like the time skips, if at times, if you have blinked it gets a little confusing at what era you are looking at especially when the young french man goes to the UK.

92. My family

A great British sit com series that has evolved with the aging of its stars. The series is traditional British slapstick humour revolving around the relationship of family members and their close friends and collegues. Basically great humour that can be watched as repeats and still enjoyed by the wider family group.

nat666195

91. Threesome

A great British comedy. I love the fact that it isn't all happy endings and has somewhat of a wacky view of the world. I found it laugh out loud funny.

The roles are the usual sort of British oddities and I love the way they let you figure it out for yourself rather than hit you over the head with it.

A great fund.

nat666195

90. Outnumbered

The whole thing is just true to life, it's scary. Parents who are so absorbed in their own world they mostly overlook the gems of information their kids come out with. Kids who actually behave like real life kids rather than the usual spoilt little brats that most shows portray.

89. Jekyll

Just watched the first of the series on BBC. Was not sure what to expect as I had not seen any publicity leading up to the broadcast.

I was very pleasently surprised. Not with the slowly revealing dark tones of the plot but also with the underlying erocism from both the female and male protagonists.

There is quite alot of attention to detail which hand in hand with the competent acting makes this very believeable and therefore watchable.

88. Ashes to Ashes

The first episode begins on the sombre note but it's only a matter of time until the fun kicks in. Phillip glenisters gene hunt makes a very welcome return, this time with a bright red audi quattro. Keely Hawes is perfect in the role of DI Alex Drake. Aware of Sam Tyler's experiences, drake is a more knowing character and the script is lighter and full of more comedic potential. Despite this, it still retains the power to hit hard messages home and there's gritty realism in some scenes.

Gave you a big rep for that one. I actually prefer it over the others. And if the second season is as good as the first, this may end up one of my top shows.

I loved "Wolf Hall" (still need to read the stories, though). And I always love the fact that my hometown (here in the US) has a connection to the fantastic Mark Rylance. :)

And I LOVE "My Family". If I ever get around to posting my top 100 (and it will have to be 100 because I just watch too much TV!), this one is definitely going to be on it.

87. Death in paradise

Death in paradise is very easy to watch, even if you dispise the old fashioned workings of the likes of miss Marple and poiroit you can grow to love this murder mystery.

Set in more sunnier climbs than your usual crime drama, the quirky carribean police force combined with some brilliant acting from Ben miller this has the recipe for a fun loving watch that isn't as dark and dreary as other such shows allowing for the thrill of the chase as the team track down the evidence in their ramshackle police hut and jungle 4x4.

All in all a brilliant series that is brimming with rich and colourful characters and story lines that captivate the imagination as this somewhat old genre is taken to new territories.

86. Top of the lake

This us clearly a wonderful piece of work with very precise character development. There is a boatload of really skilled actors, a great writer/director, a story with motives slowly and carefully revealed and a beautiful location.

As well it is a clever detective story. What more could you want. All the characters seem like real people in that they have all suffered and struggled in some way and are quite imperfect and have all wound up in the same place.

Really worth a look if you like good stories made by professionals who get to tell the story the way they want.

85. Him & her

Him & her is a fantasic comedy. The writing is very well thought out because it is so simple and that's why it is extremely popular.

Laura is the twisted character I'm sure everyone knows one in real life. Her nasty and sly comments to everyone and how self obsessed makes her one of the best characters in the programme.

Russel and Sarah are perfect for the main role, playing a convincing couple which are adorable.

This programme focuses on characters rather than one liners.

84. The mighty boosh

The vivid imagination and unorthodox jokes make up the most beautiful and rib devastating show in history. The acting may not be worthy of much, but it has the best intentions and does what is necessary to blow your mind and lungs.

The surreal world and events makes thus a show to remember. Two mildly insane friends having fantasy fun in front of the camera, that's what it is.

83. Whites

This is a quirky, witty and quite often funny comedy about goings on in the kitchen of a posh restaurant. It has great characters played by a great cast, is very current in its subject manner and is actually funny.

Alan Davis plays the main character - a chef called Ronald white, whom I gather is based on a celebrity chef with the same surname but in french.

82. Dead set

Set largely in the confines of a fictional big brother house and cleverly containing appearances from real previous occupants, this low-budget British horror comedy is a surprisingly effective television mini-series.

The first episode is longer in length than subsequent installations but really sets the scene for the mayhem to come.

Jamie Winston is the feisty heroine of the tale, a runner who's just as competent at smashing a zombies skull with a fire extinguisher as she is fetching coffee for the crew.

The sight of a zombified davina mccall is genuinely chilling.

81. Inspector George gently

The characters. The solid, thoughtful inspector gently is perfectly matched against his hot-headed subordinate bacchus. I love both these personalities, and the way their peculiar, very 1960s outlook interlock.

The fact that it's about something. These are just mindless whodunit puzzles. Each episode of the show has a strong point to make. In fact, multiple points.

Apart from those two strengths, the show has atmosphere, a unique style, great dialogue, a seething emotional confrontations. It's thoughtful yet never slow. In fact, it's good on every conceivable level, including many that are rarely present in mere tv entertainment.

nat666195

80. First wave

The show is not driven by special fx, it's driven by solid stories, solid acting, in summary it's character driven. Each week cal and his pal crazy Eddie, try to stop alien experiments and expose the truth about them.

This is not your typical show, this show has it's own identity and a following that grows weekly.

In this day and age, we look for something to carry us into the future. First wave us the show, that will carry the ball for high quality, sci-Fi dramatic television.

79. Breakout kings

Breakout kings has to be one of the most well written shows in the past year. The depth of each character is played out with flawless precision. I was a bit skeptical of the show at first, but once I started watching, there was no turning back.

Each episode is purely original without any repeated plot structure. Add on the psychological expertise of one of the team members, it becomes gripping to delve into the minds of not only escaped cons, but convicts in general.

nat666195
10-05-15, 06:19 AM
78. Sleeper cell

The only thing worse than the suspense of this programme was the arrival of the closing credits. The title tells the setting. If suspense, plot twists, good acting and believable plots are your cup of tea then your in for a fine treat. The casting was perfect, as was, on the whole, the character development.

nat666195
10-05-15, 06:29 AM
77. A town called eureka

This is a great little show to originate on such a small network. I've watched it since the debut and there hasn't been a bad episode yet. They all have been good.

The writing is very good, and so is the execution. There are a couple of veteran actors in this, including Colin ferginson, who is really good at playing the reluctant sherrif of the town if eureka.

Eureka is a very eccentric little town, apparently designed as a haven for cutting edge, and eccentric, scientists. The characters are well drawn, so you find yourself caring what happens to them.

It's a good combination of science fiction, and light humour.

nat666195
10-05-15, 06:50 AM
76. Shattered

It's a rate copshow that at once stands comfortably within the genre as standing out as wholly original.

Shattered does well with the established atmosphere and the weighty feel of the haunted detective tv drama, from the dreary, wet streets of vancouver to the bluesy guitar underscoring it's lineage to such classics as the original edge of darkness BBC mini-series or the first lethal weapon.

There's a smooth, slow build throughout the episodes, transitioning from scene to scene with the music and tension sustaining throughout, making it feel more like a feature at times than an episodic cop show.

It's shot beautifully and lit in a way that really absorbs the audience into whatever rainy alley, cold interrogation room or lonely cars the characters find themselves.

nat666195
10-05-15, 07:00 AM
75. Dead like me

This show is a combination of extremely clever plot lines, a unique and unusual musical score, contemporary editing, and outstanding character casting.

The chemistry of characters with this cast is more than exceptional. The ability to give such realism to such an absurd story premise is bewildering and you find yourself taken for a ride down this fairytale as if it were real life.

82. Dead setThe sight of a zombified davina mccall is genuinely chilling.
I still found her a little attractive. :o But then I've been in love with her since she was an MTV VJ.

Some wonderful choice here, nat. I really liked My Family until Chris Marshall left. Dead Set was pretty good and I'll almost always give something Charlie Brooker was involved in a shot.

I love Outnumbered. I think it's possibly the best comedy on tv. The marriage of writing and performances is perfect and it's also managed to stay good despite three kids growing up onscreen. If anything, I thought that Ben's Spartacus stuff was funnier than when he was the boisterous kid charging about the place and asking awkward questions.

Another recommendation for Wolf Hall here. I've not read the book, but I thought the programme was very good indeed. Mark Rylance's reputation as the best theatre actor out there gets some screen credentials too here. I think the material helps, but he's really I wonder whether he wants to?

I really enjoyed the first few seasons of A town called eureka but, as I remember it, season 3-4 it started to lose me a little. I'm not sure if I actually made it to the end of the show or not because I have a feeling that it was moved about. Anyway, it was never bad and I usually enjoyed it, even if I felt it wasn't as good as it was.

I adored Him & Her but I still don't know how I feel about that last series. Part of me thinks it was a good way of ending the programme, but another thinks a two or even three part ending would've done. The first two series are great, though.

I need to watch both series again, but I've always been of the opinion that Ashes To Ashes was better than Life On Mars. I think the best of LoM is up there with AtA and the first series is really strong, but over the long haul I think AtA is better by a clear distance. Though I might prefer the ending of LoM but, as I said, I'd have to watch them again.

74. Out of practice

First of all, the pairing of Henry winker and stockard channing is brilliant.

Second, the humour keeps me in stitches. I've never seen such great use of irony as a comedic vehicle before. The humour is simply brilliant.

Third, at first glance the characters in the show are pretty generic. The divorced parents, the womanising son, the underachieving son and the lesbian daughter. The character development becomes apparent in just a few episodes and each one brings life to the show.

73. Burn notice

This show was stylish, cheaply made and lots of fun. Donovan has a lot of charisma but Bruce Campbell and the other supporting cast really make this show pop. Miami Is a great location for this show.

In the future it would be cool to see it move around season to season. The show is smartly written and avoids most of the spy standards.

nat666195

72. Ez streets

The writing, the acting, the mood created by the amazing cinematography and hypnotic soundtrack, everything works so well in this show to create the most amazing television experience i've ever had. It's better than most movies and the plot lasts for 10 hours.

nat666195
10-05-15, 07:00 PM
71. Fastlane

To me it's the best parts of charlies angels, mod squad, miami vice, fast and the furious, shaft and more, put into one great show.

The camerawork, the colours, the music, the cars, the clothes, the dialogues, the script and three good actors who work very well together.

nat666195
10-05-15, 07:09 PM
70. Reaper

Reaper is a brilliant show, not one episode has seemed flat and it truly does have an ensemble cast.

The end of every episode is satisfying; i've found very few plot holes or flaws. The show is deep and complicated without being confusing, and every episode has several laugh-out-loud and edge-of-your-seat moments.

The concept is very original, the script is flawless, the acting is phenomenal, the special effects are gorgeous.

69. Dracula

In my opinion the story, albeit different, is very enticing from the very first episode. What intrigues me is from whose perspective and how the story is told. I find it refreshing that it tells another story then what you would expect.

Mr. Meyers is perfect for this role, he looks the part and his acting, dare I say, flawless. Another thing that surprised me is that he was pronouncing the words in romanian with a natural accent.

nat666195
10-05-15, 07:39 PM
68. Life unexpected

This show may not be completely realistic, but it isn't real to begin with, so that's not a problem. You have to go into this like any other tv show or movie, with a willing suspension of disbelief, meaning you buy into the story and characters. The show is light-hearted, even though it deals with some dramatic issues. It sprinkles humour in with serious plots, making for a charming mix.

The show is about learning who you really are, and who you need to become.

Larry munch has a great personality, which is definately the funniest in this show.

66. The wire

This show has been recommended to me by a number of friends whose opinions I trust, so I was fairly confident that I was going to be hooked from the start.

The wire is the most honest portrayal of an inner city that has ever been done. There is no good guys or bad guys, just a complicated hierarchy made up of people looking out for themselves.

The Wire is fantastic.

I still don't really know how much I liked Dracula. I think I'd like to see it again and see what I think. Shame it was cancelled after one season as I thought it'd start to get closer to the original text.

65. Backstrom

I think Backstrom had a really solid pilot. Up to the current episode, it's a win for me. Very entertaining and keeps me wanting more.

Rainn Wilson portrays the lazy, humorous detective with complete genius.

64. Crash and burn

Crash and burn is a darkly comedic drama that focuses on the insurance industry. It revolves around the character Jimmy burn who is an insurance adjuster for protected insurance. This involves our protagonist swimming in the murky waters that surround the insurance industry. This makes it diccult for Jimmy who is trying to reconcile his checkered past whilst cultivating a brighter future for his fiancée and himself.

Jimmy's struggle for a better life is continually challenged by the dark underbelly of coporate life. He has to deal with Russian mafia come auto mechanics, medical professionals, ambulance chasing lawyers, shady cops and ethically challenged insurance managers. The theme in the show is summed up in the first episode.

All of the characters are fully fleshed out and 3 dimensional and every single one is flawed. The drawing of these characters, warts and all is what makes it so interesting to watch.

Jimmy is intriguing because each episode unwraps a layer of his darker past.

Crash and burn is an engrossing story with brilliant dialogue and character development.

63. Broadwalk empire

I think this is very well done. The costume ensemble, casting, direction, and special effects all stimulate the eyes and ears superbly.

The violence, sex and dialect used is convincing, and the show would not be what it is without those factors.

62. Game of thrones

They keep true to the epically written book, and they depict the characters in an amazing way.

This ensemble cast is amazing and I love all the characters and stories that this show has to offer. I've never seen a show with a better set of actors who have such an interesting interaction with one another. An excellent writing job that crosses the historical and mythological with action, fantasy and crime drama.

Something is telling me I watched Blood Ties (at least some of it) but I don't recognise it from its wiki page at all, so maybe I didn't?

I thought Alcatraz was pretty poor. I think I made it to episode 5 or 6. That was further than anyone else I knew, though. :D

Boardwalk Empire was really good, but the last two seasons.... Not so much. In fact, I didn't bother with the last two episodes of the final season. The first couple of seasons were great, though.

I watched the first two seasons of GoT. I only started watching it as a challenge, but I quite liked the first season. I like politics and intrigue so that worked well for me. Like a medieval drama. I might've carried on with season 3 had I had more time, but it really was a struggle to get through that second season for me and the appearance of the walker/zombie things at the end was more than enough for me to be happy to stop there.

There is a continuing story here and the characters and their relationships to each other are complex. But this is what makes this show so compelling. Once you get into the flow of this series it is impossible to not be totally entertained and involved.

55. Leverage

What I really liked about this was the team. It us made up of very independent individuals who are master criminals. The key is how they have been enticed to work for Nathan Ford. They all contribute to the cause and, because of it, find they are all a powerful force that can get them more of what they are looking for.

What I also like about this show is that it is not dark and seedy. While there is violence, it is not gratuitous.

54. Highlander

This interesting highlander series has a lot to it than action, fantasy and drama. The characters are well acted, and thought out by the actors and screenwriters, respectively. The plots were excellently written, especially linking Duncan mcleods past until now, the current time period.

I especially love it when events of the past are explained through such dramas like highlander.

53. House of cards

House of cards is an entertaining and frightening tale. Ian richardson, playing the intelligent and ruthless Francis Urquhart, immediately draws you into the tale with his wry comments to the camera, discreet confidences just between the two of you, and compels you to accompany him as the tale moves from an amusing political fantasy to something altogether darker.

The writing and acting is spot on and the pace of the show doesn't slow until the final, shocking end.

52. Zen

Zen is just terrific, I loved the concept and I think the programme lived up to this concept. The writing is witty, fresh and thought-provoking, the soundtrack is good, the episodes are all well paced and I think the perfect length too, the stories were both perplexing and interesting.

51. Terriers

The writing makes terriers - but the acting sells it. The characters are engagingly flawed, the by-play between them is superb and there are visual puns embedded in many scenes. It is funny, but not slapstick. The humour is often subtle; this isn't a laugh track comedy.

The cinematography is lush. The supported actors have enough back story to be credible parts of the plot. It is engaging and fun to watch. Even the theme is catchy.

50. Believe

It's refreshing to see a show that not only isn't completely predictable, but which also gives off a vibe of being entertaining and action-packed. It's not all action, and it's not all science fiction. It's a mix of the good qualities that any genre of television can provide.

Action, humour, science fiction, but without the repetitive nature that seems to come with following a specific genre motifs.

Believes vibe is one of a kind that breaks free of genre sterotypes.

Love seeing Zen and the original House Of Cards on here. I've not seen the remake, but I think I'll like it. Are you talking about the whole trilogy here or just the House Of Cards?

It's a shame that Zen didn't go over as well as they'd hoped. Or rather, that it cost so much but didn't do as well. :(

I can remember Highlander on Sky in the early/mid 90's. I have the first couple of seasons on a h/d and I've watched it quite a bit over the years on various channels.

48. Haven

The main characters FBI agent Audrey Parker and haven deputy Nathan wournos have their own quirks. Praker is uptight, brusque and by-the-book, while wournos is laid back and literally feels no pain. Together, they make an interesting pair.

It seems that everyone in haven has a secret, and each episode reveals those secrets.

One thing that stands out besides the decent story telling, is the absolutely gorgeous scenery. Although the setting is supposed to be haven, maine, it's actually filmed in Canada.

45. Lie to me

Lie to me is an excellent show with a highly original idea. It has it's own category. Numbers deal with maths, house deals with diagnostics, bones deals with forensic science and great character development for the most part, and now Tim Roth is the human lie detector.

The show is well acted and the chemistry between Tim Roth and his partner is excellent. The dialog is very strong while having slight moments of sarcastic humour. Blunt honesty tends to be very funny at times as well.

The writing in the show makes the show seem more on edge as well and I am anxious for more.

44. Bedlam

Ignore the flaws - this show is amazing

Cast is terrific, even if the characters motivations and history are non existent. Theo James is brilliant as the main character, a person who not only sees ghosts but how they die. Charlotte salt is also a standout but her character lacks a backstory to explain why she is the way she is.

The setting is terrific - an old asylum, renovated as a high level apartment building. Each episode is well directed, music is spot on for frights, and the writing is excellent. Each episode delves into the history of the asylum with the lives of the new tenents triggering off the ghosts.

I liked Lie To Me, but I'm slightly taken aback by how good people think it is. Enjoyable? Definitely. But it's hokey as hell and completely rests on Tim Roth.

38. The shield

The thing that surprised me about the shield is the way that it's hugely exaggerated while at the same time feeling very realistic. The documentary style in which the series is filmed, as well as the solid acting contributes to this feeling. That it doesn't shun away from harsh themes or sensitive or sometimes even grotesque subjects only increases my respect for the script writers and makers of this show.

37. Battlestar galactica

This is a wonderful sci-fi series. In the midst of the battles between human-kind and the robots, the dark side of the people are exposed whereas the robots display in themselves what humanity should be. The desire to survive, the yearning for the earth, and the hope fur the future drive both the humans and the robots as the distinction between them gradually disappear.

The casting was exceptional and the performances were more than convincing. The actor's did excellent jobs in expressing the emotional struggles within and without.

36. Chicago hope

Chicago hope is one of the best medical dramas, and television shows in general. The cast is amazing and includes some of Hollywood's top names.

The show follows the lives of numerous doctors through their daily work and personal routines. The show tends to be very dramatic, but it has comedic elements.

Each character has their own way of dealing with personal loss and trauma, which is a very common element in Chicago hope.

The characters are all different, with diverse personalities and temperments. Though there is some jargon, it is explained clearly and easy to follow.

I find myself relating to some of the characters and their problems. The episodes are very touching and realistic. The on screen chemistry between the characters is amazing.

I left Grimm a few episodes into season 3 when I didn't like the way it looked like it was going. I've said that to a few people and have heard that that's what they really liked. :D Which sounds about par for the course.

I don't think I've seen Alien Nation since the 90's, but I used to really like it.

I liked Battlestar Galactica for the most part. However, I loved the original series, though I'm assuming this isn't what you're referring to.

Unlike most/many people, I thought Dexter got better as it went on from season 1-4. The fifth was a drop off, no question, but I seemed to like it a lot more than many. Six and seven were watched because it was Dexter and that's what I did. That's not to say I wasn't interested or didn't like it, but I don't think it would've got to a sixth season had season one been like that. I waited most of the last season hoping they'd do a Dallas-styled 'it was all a dream' so much did I hate what they did there.

34. Stargate-SG 1

The movie was groundbreaking, and it's ideas had great potential for further development. Usually, sequels are made to continue the story on the bug screen. Creating this excellent series was a much better decision than producing lousy sequels for the masses.

Fans of the movie get to further explore the ideas: the Stargate system, used by humans to travel the galaxy for thousands of years; Egyptian, norse and alien mythology; true science fiction - with fictional devices and concepts based on current science; and human exploration of our known universe.

Ypu see the characters develop over time, the quirky unexpected humour, the use of an alien who doesn't fully understand american English, the battle of the oppressed, the lengths humans go to survive, politics and government bureaucracy, and the underlying tenet that there is more to human life than our brief appearance on planet earth.

33. Buffy the vampire slayer

No other show touches on the major issues of humanity like this show does: immortality and it's pros and cons, the power of love and friendship, the inner strength we all have in us, and the ability to appreciate life and learn to laugh at the things that get you down. There are moments of happiness, drama, tears and moments to make you reconsider who you are, and Buffy deals with all of them. Every episode is layered with meaning and insight into humanity, all in one show about a girl who slays vampires.

Seeing these characters change and grow over the course of the episodes is a gift.

The writing is spectacular, perfectly capable of balancing humour, drama and horror in every episode.

31. A touch of frost

A touch of frost is a truly excellent drama. Frost is exactly how you'd imagine a real life detective inspector to be.

The cases which frost investigates are truly thrilling. There are so many twists and turns in the plot you can never be sure who is guilty and who is innocent. Frost is all about sysmatic police work and just like Columbo, the reason for frosts success is the superb story lines. It's great to see frost methodically trying to solve a case with good old fashioned police work. Frost is no man of action bit the superb detective work more than makes up for the omission of any action scenes.

30. Numb3ers

Numb3ers offers a fresh and interesting look at the world's of law enforcement and mathematics. The two subjects, though seemingly different, work well together in this series.

The focus of this show us not the crime, mathematics or policing, but the relationship between these three components and how they can work together to find a solution that is otherwise elusive - each offering information that would not normally be entertained.

The relationship between Don, Charlie and their father is secondary to the plot, but no less important to the shows ideas.

This is an excellent show. The show manages to balance the fearsomeness of the supernatural undertones with a certain exuberance and delight that I am definately impressed with. The show can be truly funny.

25. Brimstone

Don't view with eyes thirsting for the macabre - it's more than that. Brimstone is about a guy who gets to come back from the dead, metaphorically speaking.

Many of the psychological elements, take the flashbacks that torture stone, tell us a story about a fair man who's not perfect, like any person, yet has to struggle with the frustration of the reality that is his life.

He's gone, but stone won't let go. Brimstone is more like a dead man's odessey on seeing the fruits he missed out on had he lived, as well as his regrets often cruelly reinforced by the devil.

21. The walking dead

While watching the pilot episode of the walking dead the only word that went through my mind was awesome.

We finally have a tv show that's associated with the beloved zombie franchise and what it does it does right.

The story takes place in the present day, a sheriffs deputy, Rick grimes gets caught up in an accident and ends up in hospital, after blanking out and waking up from a coma he finds himself in an abandoned ward with flickering lights, broken down hallways and barricaded doors. As he makes his way through the dark hospital he finds out that he is the only one that's not in a body bag.

The pilot introduces us to several main characters that actually make you want to learn more about them, with brilliant directing by Frank Darabont you will come across both dramatic and emotional scenes that seem appropriate for the time, this gives the show alot of realism and just works out great.

20. Lost

There several things to like about this show.

Outstanding, intelligent layered writing. The are multiple mysteries here, and for every answer you get, more questions emerge.

Rich complex characters. Just when you think you have a character pegged, you find out something new about them that's often surprising or even shocking.

Strong performances. This is a remarkable cast of mostly journeymen actors with a couple of newcomers, and they're all turning into star-making work.

A mysterious and fascinating setting. Of the four main story elements you learned in school, plot, character, theme and setting, the latter is often the poor, neglected cousin. Not here. The island is dangerous, beautiful, creepy and Undeniably creepy. Its like a character unto itself. Part of the fun of this show is unravelling the islands secrets.

Thematic depth. This isn't just a soap opera on a desert island. There are rich metaphors and themes to be mined here, such as on the challenges of morality; on the nature of communities and civilization; on our relationship with nature/the environment; and on spirituality, even mysticism as well.

19. Hustle

A very polished, interesting and insightful drama is the perfect discription of hustle. As a British TV viewer it is very encouraging to observe a very modern, slick drama.

The direction of the piece is very new-wave with exciting camerawork and colourful cinematography. Adrian Lester is very comfortable and evokes much presense as mickey Briggs. His past experience in high profile work shines through, as he confidently outshines the rest of the cast.

The director of hustle has taken a very modern view and adaption of great con and Heist movies. He uses slo-mo shots, stops time and allows the actor to look in the camera and give an explanation of the con.

A hilarious spoof/action about 19th century america that probably was too historic for most audiences. This was one of the most entertaining comedies on tv at the time, one thankfully without a laugh track or common sitcom jokes. The acting was really good, and although the subject matter and gore was about as far as you would want to go on tv, I would sooner have it this way, than toned down to suit the more prudish element amongst us.

As this was the first outing, normally you get the feeling that the actors are finding their feet with their new characters. I didn't feel that with this, they all looked comfortable in their roles and the show was much better for it.

14. The scandalous lady w

The most important thing to realise about David eldridges adaption of the book by Hallie rubenhold was the lack of power given to any wife in the eighteenth century. They were simply regarded as a husbands property, denied any possibility for self-determination. This film explored the ways in which the eponymous central character tried to circumnavigate the law.

Told through flashbacks, we learned how lady wolsey had a sexless marriage to Sir Richard. Rather he forced his spouse to make love to a succession of titled nobles, while he watched them in the act through the keyhole - the supreme act of voyeurism. Unfortunately things go terribly wrong when lady worsley falls in love with captain George bisset. There follows a protracted court battle, where sir Richard tries to obtain £20k in compensation from captain George for hurt feelings, while steadfastly refusing to allow his wife a divorce.

Although set in the 18th century, the scandalous lady w makes some important points about the necessity of female self-determination.

Scenery that makes you think but also draws you into an almost desolate place with a fear of death not only by the elements, or polar bears, but now a murderer.

A town like this in the middle of nowhere needs to thrive on something, and when one of it's main sources of income shows signs of possible loss, the town now relies on another source of income, and that income that could be their hope for the future, comes under threat.

There are many interesting characters introduced quick, but enough to let you know - you have no idea who is guilty of what, yet. However, the plot gives enough away to throw possible red herrings, and the end of the episode leaves you wanting more.

I find this show to be a fresh take on an old story. I enjoy the gritty depiction of humanities struggle for survival, yet their ability to unite together in such odds. I enjoy the progressive discovery of how the aliens think and feel. They don't dumb them down and don't simply a tyrannical race that is out to destroy the world, nor do they make them unbeatable. This is such a wonderful story and great cast, I am captivating by all the aspects. I do like how it is realistically portrayed and that it speaks in a secret way that sexualality had a great deal to do with how history is affected by it and how love/lust can change decisions that affect the aristocracy.

Women have many powers for sure, but it's those that know how to use their sexualality, denying the needs of those spoiled and used to getting their ways, become the main way one cab inspire to a higher status.

Grey is smart in her rise to the throne, though it is her mother who is the smartest of all. In the time of deception, chaos and death, love can exist, though it also seems to show that it can not last and in a time of war, love is never enough.

7. Reign

Women will love this show.

There's romance, mystery and drama all set in the 1500s at the french court.

This show isn't like other teen series that drag on; there is a love triangle, deception, magic, political struggle, death, and beautiful costumes all introduced in the pilot episode.

6. Supernatural

Supernatural is somewhat endearing in that the main characters are brothers, however, the writing makes the characters more believeable. They are different from each other, each with their own take on life and things that are not typical.

5. The pillars of the earth

Pillars is amazing. Yes, it does differ some from the from the original book but it's a different story-telling device that enhances an enthralling tale from the 12th century that is facinating and beautifully portrayed. I read the book as well as its sequel and throughly enjoyed both.

The characters in the mini-series were intriguing, beautifully casted and truly believeable. The sets, special effects, displays of church control vs early day life of many was portrayed amazingly well.

4. Downton abbey

Downton abbey was elegant, controlled and subtly witty. The scenery, of course, is very good. The house is suitably dramatic and the fabrics, the costumes, the camera shots of ringing bells and curious meal choices in the form of fences of asparagus, the morning light, or lit windows across the lawn, and the smooth work of all the actors make it something to watch and be both interesting and relaxed.

3. One Tree Hill

All the young actors are confident and convincing in their roles, and there is seldom a false moment in the show. The cast of one tree hill is of course helped immensely by the fact that their characters are so well written, they are people the audience really cares for and takes an active interest in.

It also has excellent writers, who are not afraid to deal with heavy topics like teen pregnancy, date rape, drug abuse and school shootings. The dialogue has a true ring to it, and the story lines are believeable and engaging.

2. Gilmore girls

I think this is a good series, a thoughtful, funny, beautifully written and well observed show about the relationship between a loving mother and daughter. At the same time, it features the quirks and tics of a fictional town with the kind of appeal that is unrealistic, but makes us nostalgic for a sweet hamlet that has taken the two formerly outsider main characters and claimed them as one of their own.

1. The tudors

The tudors is a fantasic show which showcases the life and times of king henry VIII. To get to the heart of the story you have to go back to the beginning.

I personally love tudor England and know alot about it. The show takes many liberties buy that's why it's entertainment and not a biography film on the king.

Hi Nat, sorry I've not kept up with your top 100 but I've read through it all now. Well done for completing it :)
The one show I feel is missing completely is The Sopranos. You not watched or not liked? Same goes for Mad Men.

Wolf Hall, Breaking Bad and The Wire would be much higher up on my list, but you have some great TV in your list. Included in yours which I would also have is : Lost, Ashes to Ashes (would also have Life on Mars) , The Wire, Wolf Hall, The Missing, Frost, Breaking Bad, Parades End.
The ones I like but may not be in my list is Mildred Pierce, Zen - thought it was under rated,I like the books too and Top of The Lake

Where I synchronise with you is on Call the Midwife. I've cried so many tears over that programme it's ridiculous!
