Movie of the Month (Master Thread)

Alright folks, let's see how this goes. This is sort of the "headquarters" thread for all things MotM-related. I guess my idea pitch was successful, now how about my sales pitch!

The Movie Forums Movie of the Month is a new (not really) forum activity that grants a member the opportunity to host their own thread, that thread puts a movie he/she holds dear to their heart onto the MotM pedestal for all other MoFos to see. For the duration of the month, members are highly encouraged to view and/or discuss the movie that member has chosen.

Why did that member choose that particular movie? What does that movie mean to them? How did YOU react to the movie upon watching it?

These questions and endless more can be up for discussion to make each and every Movie and the Month entertaining and memorable.

Not only watching and discussing though;other opportunities including games, quizzes, host roasts, and possibly even PODCASTS hosted by our Master Jedi himself are possible during the MotM!

Once that month has ended, then a new host will be chosen with a new movie and a new journey begins for us all!

The level of activity you wish to involve yourself in MotM is completely up to you. Do you want to possibly host? Do you want to just sit back and join the discussions? Do you want to help the host make his/her thread the best it could be? Many options are available, and you are completely free to choose your level of participation.

There are many ways to go about participating in this hopefully long-running activity—but there will always be one goal for everyone: have fun!


A quick overview:

- All hosts and movies chosen for the MotM will first be announced in this thread.

- If you wish to become a host, then please say so here and I will put you on the board. This is just so a person that has no desire to host does not get picked over others that do.

- All past MotM threads will be archived here.

- Anything related to Yoda's MotM/Movie Club podcasts can be discussed here.

- If you have any questions at all for anything MotM-related, please post them in this thread.

I've been thinking... it may be in everyone's best interest if I just go ahead and be the first host. That way I'll be the one to go through the growing pains of how all this will work exactly, and all the future hosts' MotMs will hopefully go more smoothly. Also, it'll give me more time trying to figure out how we'll do the voting system.

The host will be the one in charge of their own thread, he/she will be in complete control of how they want everything to be done with their MotM time. I figured there will be a great deal more freedom for the host that way, but there will also be a bit more responsibility. They can put questions, pictures, gifs, anything they want in their thread. Or if they want to just be like "Here's my movie. Go watch it." Then that's fine too. :)

As much as I'd prefer False Writer to host the first movie because it's more likely to be a movie that I might watch, I think most people would prefer Derek Vinyard to host this month because he'll probably pick a movie that will be a good Halloween movie.

(I'll probably end up skipping this month if that happens, but you know, the whole "needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one" thing. ;) )

Did you read the overview? It's not a super selective club or anything like that, just the people who have interest in hosting. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Even though it's only been about a week, I'm quite happy with how this is turning out. Definitely content enough to try it again next month. It's still in the infancy stage though, so there's a lot of room for improvement, but what we have so far I'd say is good! :)

I haven't had time to write any reviews, but I watched all three of the first three movies, and I liked all three of them. (That's not likely to continue just because my taste in movies is so different from a lot of people here, but it's a good start. :) )

So, general note to all future hosts: we probably won't be able to do a podcast for each film (partially just because the planning and editing might be a bit much to do every month), but the odds increase significantly if you pick something with a lot to talk about. Feel completely free to choose whatever you want, naturally, but if it's a comedy, or a dramatic showcase, or a really straightforward film of any genre, there probably won't be enough there to do a podcast for.

Again, choose whatever you want! But if you definitely want a podcast done for your choice, you're way more likely to get it if you choose something conducive to conversation and/or analysis. Carry on! :)

I really admire your integrity Slappy and it says a lot about you, that you have thought of others before yourself. I'm OK if you go back to back with BlueDeed. I think we would all look forward to what movies you guys would choose:)

I do have a request of the three podcasters, when it's my turn to choose a movie (which I think is next month), I hope you can do a podcast for it...but please don't rate my movie.

I don't want the burden of trying to impress or win a high rating. I had planned on picking only an average rating film, but one that had some interesting social aspects, so that people could discuss it.

I do enjoy the podcast and glad you guys can give of your time to do that for us.

I don't think any rating we give would reflect on you or anything. Lots of movies that don't make great movies still make great topics. And that's actually the primary consideration as to when we'll do the podcasts: a divisive film might make for better subject matter than a fantastic one about which there isn't much left to say.

Yeah, I agree with that. When I pick, I'll be choosing movies that I think are worthy of discussion, rather than picking favorites. I find a lot of my favorite movies very hard hard to talk about using words (John Ford, for example).

What I've been doing to pick the new hosts—which is what I'm probably gonna keep doing, is just handpicking them myself. I pick them based on their participation of the previous months, desire to host, how much they put into their participation etc.

Since you two are doing the podcasts, you're definitely higher up on the list, but there are some members that have been loyal since the start that I may pick next.

I've been meaning to host since the start but there have always been people that requested to go, so I went ahead and let them host. This is the first time that no one has requested to go, and a movie has come to mind that I thought would be perfect for a cold month like February.

Also, it's the shortest month of the year, so I can go ahead and get my turn done and then turn my full attention to helping other people host from then on.

I don't look at this as a "failure" but rather an idea that simply ran its course. It was a fun 7 months and hopefully not too long from now a new, fresh idea will take MotM's place.

Sorry to hear that, False Writer. I really appreciate your efforts, though. :up:

We've done several versions of some kind of scheduled discussion off and on for a decade or more, and it's always surprisingly difficult to get a large number of people involved. The people who partake seem to really enjoy it, but I think people tend to use the forum in a more relaxed, free form way, only getting into deeper discussions when the mood strikes them or the topic is particularly interesting. So you end up with a few people who'll gladly partake no matter what, and a whole lot more than might be interested every fourth or fifth time.

I still wonder whether or not something like this can work, but I'm thinking it might involve something more like a sustained recruitment effort, rather than just a come-and-go, informal thing.

All that said, I've really enjoyed doing the podcasts, and I'd hate not to keep doing them, so I'm going to think about how best to continue those. Open to suggestions on that front, but it might be as simple as one of us just randomly picking a movie each month or two, with input from the community.

Your idea of a Movie of the Month was a success. Seven months is a long run! I enjoyed it, there were lots of neat movies that I would not have watched otherwise. And I enjoyed my time as host, even if only a few people watched my movie, it was still worth it.

Please, when you have the time come up with your new fresh idea for a MotM, do it! I know we talked about some of your ideas and I think you are on the right track and will get more people interested with them. So I hope you won't give up on your idea. Thank you for doing this for all of us!

What do you say FalseWriter? Or, if you don't want to do it, we can run it on the honor system. A person calls the month they want to host. Everybody gets one turn before a host does it twice. I would love to see what GBG would have come up with for a movie.

I just can't say how much I'll be involved this time around. I'm at kind of a weird point in my life and I haven't been as active, which was part of the reason I decided to end this. I'll still try to support it as much as I can though.

I'm completely fine with you taking over Citizen! You were the biggest supporter when this was going on and—with all due respect to cricket, gb, Yoda, the podcast guys and all the other amazing participants—wouldn't want anyone else taking over!

If there was a way that you could take over this thread then I'd be all for that, but I don't think that's possible...only Yoda would know I guess. But yeah if not then go ahead and make a new one. Like I said I probably won't be able to be a regular participant but will try my best to support your thread, especially if I have easy access to one of the movies picked.
