Does anyone know how to delete songs and videos off of an iPod Nano 5th Generation without using iTunes?

It's Apple, they keep you locked in to their stuff.

I know nothing about iTunes. Is it a free download?
You can remove songs and videos from a certain playlist but there is no way you can permanently delete them. Once you buy one it's stuck with you, as Sean said it's an Apple thing. Why do you want to delete them anyways?

I was at a garage sale this weekend late in the day, and the guy was just giving stuff away for free. I got an iPod Nano 5th Generation, and it's got about 2000 songs on it. Some of the songs are great, but there are a bunch that I want to remove so I can put better stuff on it. There are also a bunch of TV shows on it that I want to remove.
I've never been much of an Apple person, so I'm not too familiar with their stuff.

Yes, iTunes is free.
After I download iTunes, do I have to synch it with the iPod to remove the songs, or can iTunes just access the iPod as a device and delete the songs?

Itunes will wipe it clean because your a new user. If their are songs you want to keep rip them to your computer first.

How do I rip the songs off the iPod first? I thought I needed iTunes to do that.

You need to sync it with ITunes, but you can only remove them from your iPod.

I have no idea what that means.
If I synch it with iTunes, will iTunes delete the songs from the iPod, or not?
I want to save some of the songs, but not all of them. Is there a way to download all the songs to my computer, reset the iPod, and then reload just the songs that I want to keep?
Also, there are a few games on the iPod. Is there any way to save some of the games?
It will remove the songs from the iPod (but as I said not delete them forever) I think.... honestly I'm not really sure. I've never come across a used free iPod before. There's probably a few guides on how to do it so why don't you check them out? One Google search should do the trick.

I've been searching Google for how to use the iPod without iTunes, but I can only find a way to put songs on. I can't find anything about how to take them off.

When you hook you ipod up to itunes it will ask if it is new device. At that point it will wipe you clean. Honestly now that you say it I don't know if you can pull files beforehand. It has been a few years since I used an ipod. Apple is super strict about that stuff. That want you hooked up and buying stuff through them.

That's why I've never bought an Apple product. I don't like being locked into anyone's software.
I have a Sansa Fuze mp3 player, and I love it. I can just drag and drop files in Windows.

Yeah, I've been using my phone a lot recently since I got a bluetooth headset for it, but my phone only has about 100 songs, and my Sansa has over 2000 songs and a bunch of videos.
