View Full Version : Tattoo virgin. Opinions?
Right. I'm an idiot and I am getting a tattoo. ;)
I've asking opinions from as many peeps as possible.
Originally I wanted this on my chest but I asked a tattooist and they said it would work well on my inner bicep (I'm thinking right arm).
Just want some opinions on this location.
Cheers.

Think twice before deciding on any design. There's a lot of gawd awful tattoos out there and scant few good ones. Look online and see what looks good and what looks like crap.

My opinion is don't get a tattoo, and if you do, you're right that you're an idiot.
I reckon it'd be quite painful on your inner right arm, although if it's small, it probably wouldn't take too long?
Haha, nah that's cool. I know people can have their opinions on this and that's fine.
I'm thinking and have thought hard about this. For me I think it is right.
Pain isn't being considered here hehe. It's a permanent decision so I'd rather put it in a place I'd prefer for temporary pain.

Ouch, GB.
I think a lot of tattoos look beautiful, but so do a lot of pictures that can be hung on walls, without damaging someone's body. Or design your own T-shirt, jacket, hat, wristband, etc. with that saying. One that can be removed without damaging your body.
I don't think that people think about what they're doing to their body when they get them. I know several people who got tattoos when they were young, who regretted getting them later in life.
I just think that he should think about it, and how he might feel about it when he's 50 or 60 years old, before he rushes in to actually getting a tattoo.

Your opinion is just that, an opinion - shame on you inferring that anyone who gets a tattoo is an idiot just because you obviously wouldn't want one and don't agree with them, disappointed in you Gbg.
He called himself an idiot first. I just agreed with him.
Best advice I can give is if you want to get it then have it placed somewhere that can be covered up if necessary - other than that get it wherever you're happy with the location.

Yeah, I'm not getting a tattoo that cannot be covered up as I don't think that would be too wise. I'm thinking my inner bicep because I can have it on show and also cover it when I want to.
Yeah no bother really. I know the conflicting opinions on this and I thank you for the advice.
As long as you are sure you want one - some people live to regret them, others like me still like theirs 30+ years later :)
Yeah I'm sure. It's definitely a saying that is very true and I highly doubt it'd be something I would disagree with later.

Multiple reasons, but the basic reason -- it's just three little words. They better mean something really MAJOR to you. Like, your mother better had said that to you everyday growing up or something.

That thread made me think what I would do if my girlfriend (if I had one, that is) told me she's getting a tattoo. Probably would have no other choice than to respect her choice. I guess if we loved each other such a thing couldn't break our relationship. Except for a "I'm a stupid whore" tattoo on her fore head, or something. That would be stupid. However, If it was a new girl I'm dating... I don't know. I don't like tattoos, but I got more mature about things lately... Piercing is way worse.

I love almost all my tattoos. There is one that will be covered and two that have been covered. I would say, make sure you put a lot of thought in it. Get it in a place that YOU want it. Don't change your mind about placement because someone says it will look better. They are probably telling you that because of the level of pain that either place will cause. The inner arm hurts like a son of a bitch. I have heard that the chest isn't any better. Anyway, get a lot of thought put in it and make sure that is what you want. I wouldn't say that tattoos damage someones body. Body mutilation is a broad term, I know, but everything I have seen about it almost never refers to tattoos unless people go overboard and do every inch of their skin. I have seven tattoos and intend to get more. I enjoy it. I don't think that it hurts badly, in most places, and I kind of enjoy the pain that it does bring. Tattoos are a very personal thing, they are not for everyone. Don't assume that I am any less educated because I have tattoos. Don't assume that I am a criminal because I have tattoos. You know what happens when you assume.....

Dude, I used to love Disturbed about 5 years ago. I'd say they're my favourite band. Say, I made Disturbed tattoo back then. Nowadays I find their music boring and uninteresting. If it didn't teach me anything, I'd cover it with a tattoo of another band I used to love - Agalloch. But in couple of years I may think they're lame, too.
Why don't you make a temporary tattoo of that saying and wear it for like half a year. If after that time you still feel like you want it, make a real one.

Will you be able to cover it up if you want to (or need to for your current or any future job)? What will it look like with different types of clothing - it might look silly if you can see half of it when you're wearing a short sleeve t-shirt. Is it important to you to be able to look at it and read it?

Rhys, I hope you don't mind me saying this but I know you've recently split up with your girl and I know you're saying you were planning to have a tattoo anyway, but remembering waaaayyy back I seem to remember feelings of unrest and pointlessness when love didn't work out. I'm not saying that's you, but if it is, then just take a few weeks for your feelings to sort themselves out before you decide on getting a tattoo, or even if you still want to, what it says.

Rhys, just think of this when you are getting your tattoo..
1. Will it be in a place that may hinder me from getting a job I want in the future? I know a guy who had a full back and arms tattoo and guess what? He got a job where he had to wear long sleeve shirts every day... because of the office environment.
2. Is it something I might regret in the future? A tattoo is permanent, sure you can cover it with another tattoo but how many times are you going to be able to do that?
3. Is it some that is worth the money? Tattoos are expensive. You need to look at that.
There are so many more questions you need to look into and ask yourself before you do it..
and JUST FYI everyone else! (SC, Minio, CS, Swan and whoever else gives me ****!).. NO I dont have any tattoos...

Rhys - make of this what you will. My dad is a Korea War vet. Navy. He got his tattoos in the 50's. He's 86 years-old-now. His tats (on each forearm) are faded to a dull bluish gray. He says getting them was one of the biggest regrets of his life, and he felt this way long before their color faded.
My personal view: do what makes you happy, but remember permanent decisions based on temporary feelings don't always provide the anticipated fulfillment in the long run.
I've got scars all over - from injuries, beatings, etc. I've even got pencil tattoos on my hands and wrists - these were defensive wounds from kids in school who attacked me with sharp pencils that pierced my flesh and left indelible marks (basically lead tattoos) that forever remind me of the viciousness of my once classmates. Granted, none of these marks were by choice, but I wouldn't have any if it were up to me. I guess I'm saying that I view my physical surface as a place that should be kept as beautiful, unmarred, clean and pristine as possible - it is not an area intended for graffiti.

Tattoos fade because they're actually very slowly being digested by the body. They're "permanent" in a sense that they'll last a long time, but they're actually very slowly being digested by the body. In fact, tattoo removal is actually all about making the body just digest it much faster. That's what I heard somewhere, at least.

I think what bothers me most about tattoos is the fact that they are so FAD-ish.
Like piercings and so many other things, I don't like the idea of people altering themselves (permanently) just because they feel it's the "in" thing to do. It's the form of expression their current friends or celebrities they admire are currently engaging in. Or this is how my little counter culture practices non-conformity to express our dissatisfaction with the establishment... by conforming to exactly what my little counter culture currently thinks is our expression of non-conformity. ;)
And it is totally a fad. It's only exploded (as fads do) in the last few decades - and it is just a bunch of people conforming to what their current social circles think is "cool" & represents their counter-culture of non-conformity. (And I'm stressing that twice for a reason - to emphasize that every act of non-conformity is really an act of conformity to a different demographic. You may think you've never been part of the herd, but by trying to let everyone know you're not part of the herd, you're simply conforming to a herd - the one that worries about being perceived as being part of the herd.)
Prior to current times, tattoos were a fad mostly limited to the military (in western culture anyway). And in that case it's just another form of marking to establish belonging to a gang - a form of brand (like on livestock) if you will.

Tattoos are the new cigarettes. Smoking is out but body altering art is in. Youth is always looking for a way to rebel, even if it means conforming to their peers ideas.

I've never cared to get a tattoo or any form of body art myself, but I think they're kind of neat.

OK, the body art is utterly stupid. All you have to do is piss one person off. Can you imagine?!? :|

I'm referring to a scene in a movie, where maybe it was Chris Farley, and they had a nose ring. When he pissed someone off, that person ripped it off their nose. Dangerous stuff.
However, those things that people now wear in their ears, stretching them out in a big circle . . . Those do look stupid. Sorry, but they do. Also, it's called opinions in fashion. No being close minded.

Those look kind of goofy to me too. But again, personal expression.
I think the back laces MG posted are awesome.

Yep, they look cool, but utterly painful, and it seems they'd be dangerous. What if you got it snagged on something. I mean damn!
I do think it's funny how often people call others closed minded, just because their opinions don't match. Hell, if anything, that's close minded. Not allowing people to like what they want, or dislike what they want. It works both ways. ;)

I once worked with this guy named Chris Longo (you can look him up). He was a welder and I was a site Safety Coordinator (feared and hated by those I was sworn to protect!)
So Chris (who was a hell of a nice guy, btw... in case he's reading this) had all these rings in his ears, nose & face at that time (in addition to tattoos everywhere). He was actually quite scary looking when I first met him. He also appeared on a TV special about tattoos.
Anyway, I began to kid around with him, telling him that his rings were a safety hazard - all that needed to happen was for one or two of his rings getting caught on something on the construction site, and his whole face could be ripped off! (Hey, it COULD happen - thank God it never did). We didn't have any actual regulation regarding face rings for general construction, (I don't think OSHA does either).
Chris, btw, intended to get a "full shirt" of tattoos, but I remember him saying he'd never get one on his face. After looking him up, it appears he fulfilled his goal.

I'm not a fan of numerous tattoos. So many like that, covering your arms, chest, and back. If you gained a lot of weight, wouldn't they look weird? Anyway, I think small tattoos, placed here and there, are neat. Placed on the lower back, near the tail bone, the back of the neck, and maybe even a tiny one on the leg, but never anything huge.

I genuinely don't understand this. My cousin wants it done, but I don't understand it. The beautiful part is, I don't have to. I think that it looks incredibly painful.....

I think what bothers me most about tattoos is the fact that they are so FAD-ish.

Prior to current times, tattoos were a fad mostly limited to the military (in western culture anyway). And in that case it's just another form of marking to establish belonging to a gang - a form of brand (like on livestock) if you will.
In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, tattoos were as much about self-expression as they were about having a unique way to identify a sailor's body should he be lost at sea or impressed by the British navy.

My main concerns are
- It's not a true translation from Spanish (or any language) and is just a well known phrase (from way before the song came out) in Spain.
- Is it too feminine?
If you like it then do you.
Also, it is really feminine. I googled it and only saw one guy that had the tattoo. It was in the place that you are considering getting it.

I guess it doesn't matter about it being feminine though. I'm feeling a lot more confident about this now to be honest. Sure, girls get it more-so than guys but it doesn't devalue the meaning.

Well there ya go then, bud. :) Problem solved. Like I said, do you. Who cares what everyone else thinks? As long as it isn't something that is going to monumentally screw up your life, go for it.

Ive got 2 tats and I still love them. I never really cared what other people would/do think of them, if you like them then get it, simple as.
Regarding location (still inner bicep?) it will probably hurt but it'll be fine. 1 of mine kinda curls over bicep towards inner and it did hurt the closer i got but it was no problem.

I vote don't get one. I got 3 a long time ago before everyone had them. It used to be cool but it's just not anymore. You're more unique if you don't these days.
I guess I'm an idiot now, I'm thinking about getting one.

Since you guys are feeling like idiots, why not get a couple of Prince Alberts instead?
Just as painful to get (or maybe a bit more!); just as disrespectful to your body; not quite as permanent if you don't want it to be; sure to impress the ladies!!! and guaranteed to break the ice at parties!
I don't actually feel like an idiot. :p

My mother's advice on tattoos...
"If you are going to get one, get it where no one will see it, like your ass."
