Growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, I loved to listen to music on the radio. Once MTV hit the scene, it was a big deal because you music with video. One of the first videos I remember from MTV was "Brass In Pocket" by The Pretenders. The Pretenders hit the scene in 1970's within the punk rock and new wave movement.

They had hits with "Don't Me Wrong", "Back On The Chain Gang", "Message of Love" and "Brass In Pocket".

Pat hit the scene in the late 1970's. Her voice was a unique one, she is a mezzo-soprano. Her first hit from 1980, "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", shot her to popularity. She has had countless hits, such as "Hell Is For Children", "Fire and Ice", "Shadows of The Night", "We Belong" and countless others.

I'm generally not a fan of female vocalists, but Pat Benatar is one of the few that I like. She has a very powerful voice.

I think "Heartbreaker" is probably my favorite of her songs, followed closely by "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" and "Love is a Battlefield".

Annie Lennox
(Eurythmics)

http://styleshoutout.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ed2.jpg

Annie Lennox hit the US airwaves back in 1983, as the vocals behind the British duo, the Eurythmics. Their first break through song was "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", which has been recorded since by other artists. They had other hits with "Here Comes The Rain Again", "When Tomorrow Comes", "There Must Be an Angel" and other songs. The Eurythmics dis banned in the mid 80's but Annie continue to make solo albums and reunited in 1999 with David A Stewart to bring them into the 2000's. Annie has continued her solo career as well.

Natalie Merchant was lead vocals for the band, 10,000 Maniacs during the 1980's. However, I did not become a fan of her's until she started her solo career in 1995. She had solo hits with "Carnival", "Wonder" and "Jealousy".

True, her best songs are on her full albums - I find her singles to be her more "poppy" songs while her albums have a lot of more diverse and darker songs

WTF?! Patty Smyth! I thought she's Patti Smith for some time! The song's pretty good no matter who she is!

I thought Fleetwood Mac is a modern indie band. -_- Whatta mistake.

Another band from the 1970's that graced the airwaves and one of the first videos on MTV was Deborah Harry and Blondie. Their were one of the early bands of punk and new wave music. Deborah Harry has a unique voice as well. In 1978, Blondie released their "Parallel Lines" album, that included "Picture This", "One Way Or Another" and "Heart of Glass". Harry and Blondie were a smash hit worldwide. They continued to release hits into the 1980's. Harry is one of the trendsetters for female vocalists.

Missy Higgins

http://cdn2.greatsong.net/photo/ext/missy-higgins-166965.jpg

Missy Higgins is a female vocalist from Australia. Missy hasn't ever hit the American airwaves with any #1 hits. I discovered her from the CW's "Smallville", which featured one of her songs. She has had multiple hits in her home country. Her song "Where I Stood" hit at #10 on Billboard's Hot Adult Contemporary Chart.

I will listen to some classic albums many people love and make a new thread about it and if they suck I will bash them, but if they rock they will get a special kind of award. No idea as to how should I call it, though.

Cyndi Lauper

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/blog_post_349_width/2010/11/lauper_2010_a_p.jpg

Back in the early 1980's, I was a young teenage girl and I knew I wanted what Cyndi wanted, I just wanted to be young and have fun! To me, Cyndi Lauper has the most amazing voice! Even today! Her first album was released in 1983 and she had four top 5 Billboard hits with "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "Time after Time", "She Bop" and "All The The Night". Even after she dropped out of the 80's culture limelight, she continued on to make amazing music!

Sharon den Adel

http://i58.tinypic.com/2dlnqxx.jpg

First thing you need to know is that I am a HUGE Within Temptation fan and fan of Sharon den Adel. Her voice is amazing to me! That's why I paired her with Cyndi Lauper. Within Temptation is a Dutch Symphonic Metal band. Their first cd was released in 1997 and they became prominent in the Dutch underground music scene. Their music has been considered "Doom Metal", "Goth Metal" and "Symphonic Metal".

I found Within Temptation's cd "The Heart of Everything" a few years back at Hot Topic and bought it on a whim. I am glad I did! They are popular on the east coast of the United States but haven't made it to the Midwest yet!

I hope you don't mind me playing catch up and recapping some of the vocalist you listed on page 1 and 2.

Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders)
Growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, I loved to listen to music on the radio. Once MTV hit the scene, it was a big deal because you music with video. One of the first videos I remember from MTV was "Brass In Pocket" by The Pretenders. The Pretenders hit the scene in 1970's within the punk rock and new wave movement.

They had hits with "Don't Me Wrong", "Back On The Chain Gang", "Message of Love" and "Brass In Pocket". I remember when my high school friend's parents got cable and in between the movies on Showtime they played music videos, that was before MTV was created. Of all the videos I seen I was enamored with Chrissie Hynde and the song Brass In Pocket. I had 2 of their albums, well cassette tapes really, and listen to them all the time. I liked all those songs you listed I also remember Talk of the Town being good.

Pat Benatar
Pat hit the scene in the late 1970's. Her voice was a unique one, she is a mezzo-soprano. Her first hit from 1980, "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", shot her to popularity. She has had countless hits, such as "Hell Is For Children", "Fire and Ice", "Shadows of The Night", "We Belong" and countless others. I was in High School and the local radio station was having a Rising Stars concert series and for $2 you could see a rising star in a small venue in Seattle. I remember saying to my classmates, "are you guys going to see Pat Benatar?" Their reply was "uhh, who's he."...I didn't go to that concert but I seen Pat a couple years latter in another small venue with Bryan Adams opening. Good times.

The band's music combines unique and stylistic elements of horror, punk and electronic music as well as pop and their work contains imagery revolving around medical experiments and grotesque societies.

Chibi
(The Birthday Massacre)

http://data.whicdn.com/images/52527512/large.png

Chibi is the lead female vocalist for the Canadian band, The Birthday Massacre. They are a dark wave/goth rock band. I found them several years ago. Since I have grown older, my taste in music has expanded into other genres including the dark wave/goth rock genre. For some reason, it just seems to fit me.

Sorry for invading your thread. Though I heard it's not known if Prince is male or female. Seriously. That's why (s)he has become 1st 'the artist formaly known as prince' and then simply the sign.

I'm probably completely wrong, though.

Prince, as he is again, is definitely male.

I have decided to revive this thread. I have come across some great vocalists over the past few years.

Lousine Gevorkyan
(Louna)

I found this band randomly but no less, I really liked their sound. Especially Lousine's vocals. They fit right along with other female singers I have enjoyed in the past. She can sing in her native Russian and English. I really like the song "Mama". The lyrics describe the person explaining to her mother that she's into rock n roll and what it has to offer.

Lauren Strahm
(goes by stage name of Fleurie)

A singer that Last.fm suggested when I was listening to another female singer. I like her quietness and her soft vocals.

Helene Bøksle

I found this artist from the soundtrack of the film "Birkebeinerne." In my opinion, she has one of the most beautiful voice in music. Most of her music is in Norweigan, her native language, which I don't understand, however, the music is still enjoyable.

Sigrid Hausen
(Qntal)

I actually found Qntal as Toby Froud, son of artists Brian and Wendy Froud (a conceptual artist who assisted Jim Henson with "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal"), directed one of their videos. I have been a fan of this band for several years. I continue to search out new music of theirs. They are considered a Darkwave/Neofolk band.

I'm familiar with most of them. To be honest, seeing Chibi up there was a very pleasant surprise. I've heard thousands of albums, and it's rare that I find a song that really resonates with me anymore. Here's my most recent new jam.

I listen to a lot of music with female vox. I'm familiar with most of the singers mentioned in the thread and like a good portion of them. I'll probably make more posts here, but for now, this will have to do as Anneke van Giersbergen must be mentioned.

Hildur Kristín Stefánsdótti
(Rökkurró)

Singer for the Icelandic band with a rare-sounding and soft voice. She sings in English and Icelandic. I found them as a suggested "band" of an Icelandic composer I enjoy.

Theresa Jeane
(The Nearly Dead)

I found this band randomly looking at a list of musicians at a festival that someone mentioned to me. I really like their sound and her voice.
