View Full Version : My Favorite Prime Time Soap Characters

Anyone who has followed my television lists should be well aware of my passion for the television genre affectionately known as the prime-time soap opera. For the purpose of this list and recognizing some of my favorite actors/characters that would not make the list otherwise, I will be including characters from some shows that aren't technically soaps, like Scandal and Grey's Anatomy, which aren't really soaps, but do have continuing long running storylines and consist of episodes that aren't self-contained. This is a list of my favorite prime time soap characters:

Linda Fairgate

Knots Landing

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/Hs_bb_f1O2M/hqdefault.jpg

Linda Fairgate (Lar Park Lincoln) was a maneater who arrived at CBS's most famous cul-de-sac as the allegedly virginal young bride of Eric Fairgate (Steve Shea), but ended up having an affair with Eric's brother, Michael (Pat Petersen).

Ray Krebbs

Dallas

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd304/KrebbsOne/Rodeo54.jpg

Steve Kanaly made an impression as the unassuming and quietly sexy farm hand at Southfork who was eventually revealed to be another Ewing, not before having an affair with Lucy Ewing (Charlene Tilton) though he did eventually find happiness with Donna (Susan Howard).

Harrison Wright

Scandal

http://cdn2.crushable.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Columbus-Short-in-Scandal-still.jpg

Despite some questionable shirt/tie combinations, actor Columbus Short was slick and sexy as a devoted gladiator to Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) whose undying loyalty to Olivia was his eventual undoing.

Matthew Blaisdel

Dynasty

http://www.der-denver-clan.de/img/mdb/matthew007_1.jpg

Bo Hopkins was a strong presence during the early years of the show as a business rival of Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) who, despite being married to the mentally fragile Claudia (Pamela Bellwood) could never really get Krystle (Linda Evans) out of his system.

I'll be here repping the ones I know and like. Being a Brit there's bound to be a good few that I won't know, so don't take that as disagreement. :D

Dr. Michael Mancini

Melrose Place

http://static.tvfanatic.com/images/gallery/michael-mancini-photo.jpg

Thomas Calabro was funny and sexy as the apartment complex's resident doctor and manwhore. Despite being married to a beautiful fashion designer named Jane (Josie Bissett), Michael was probably the only male character on the show who had sex with every major female character on the show, with the exception of his sister, Jennifer (Allyssa Millano).

Dr. Miranda Bailey

Grey's Anatomy

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/87/Dr._Miranda_Bailey.jpg

Chandra Wilson has done Emmy-worthy work as the crusty and brilliant surgeon who has kept new residents shaking in their boots for almost a decade now. She has a wonderful bedside manner with patients but her people skills with her co-workers definitely leaves something to be desired. Bailey's obsession with her work destroyed her marriage to the father of her child (not a doctor) but she did find love with a doctor (Jason George) a season or two ago.

Edie Britt

Desperate Housewives

https://dvdbash.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/desperate-housewives-dvd-s1-nicollette-sheridan-edie-britt-006-dvdbash.jpg

Nicollette Sheridan provided a seamless combination of sexual heat and comic relief on Wisteria Lane as the multi-divorced aging sex kitten who threw herself at just about anything in pants that appeared on the Lane. Her original battle with Susan Meyer (Teri Hatcher) over the attentions of Mike Delfino (James Denton) was consistent entertainment.

I haven't observed a lot of love for this genre on this board, so yeah, there are probably going to be a lot of characters and shows mentioned here that you've never heard of.

Brian Darling

Dirty Sexy Money

http://www2.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/Glenn+Fitzgerald+Disney+Launch+Party+Dirty+O8z23HdL38Ql.jpg

Actor Glenn Fitzgerald created an explosive, funny, and unpredictable character in Brian Darling, the so-called alleged black sheep of the Darling family who was a priest and hated being a priest. Brian found his world rocked when he learned that his ex-wife (Sheryl Lee) had been keeping a son from him for years and when it was revealed that he wasn't really a Darling after all.

I don't remember him being that good in DSM, though I think I might've not seen the whole run as I don't remember him not being a family member. Though maybe that's just how little impact it had on me.

I loved Dr. Michael Mancini, though. Especially once him and Kimberley got together. They were great together and, maybe, just as good once they fell apart.

I lasted about 3 episodes of Desperate Housewives before I decided against it, but Nicollette Sheridan is one of the least attractive 'hot' women I've ever seen.

Sammy Jo Carrington

Dynasty

http://www.newnownext.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Dynas34.jpg

Heather Locklear made her first major impression on prime time as Krystle Carrington's niece, a manipulative sex kitten so self-assured in her ability to use sex to get what she wanted, she managed to seduce Blake's gay son Steven and even had his baby, then proceeded to use said baby as a bargaining chip in getting what she wanted out of the Carringtons.

Dr. George O'Malley

Grey's Anatomy

http://www.artsyglobe.com/media/30-gay-actors-who-play-straight-characters/t-r-knight-dr-george-omalley.jpg

TR Knight played the young idealistic resident who failed his first year but actually came back to practice with the residents he began with, nurse an unrequited crush on Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), have a toxic affair with Izzy (Katherine Heigl), and marry Callie (Sara Rodriguez) before dying tragically. Sadly, the knowledge that Knight was openly gay IRL overshadowed his work on this show, indirectly causing the termination of a cast mate (Isaiah Washington).

Aiden Mathis

Revenge

http://www.tvgoodness.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/revenge_aiden.jpeg

Barry Sloane's smoldering good looks and elegant English sensibility lent itself perfectly to the agent and true love of Emily Thorne (Emily Van Camp) who did everything he could to help Emily with her mission, but didn't quite get the happy ending he and Emily wished for. I would also like to put in Sloane for your consideration as the new James Bond.

I loved Aiden on "Revenge", and I hated when they wrote him out of the show. I thought he was one of the best characters on the show, but I guess he just got in the way of Emily's true love.

I tried watching Barry Sloane in his new show "The Whispers", but I just couldn't get into the show.

I hadn't thought about him as James Bond, but you're probably right. He would probably be great as Bond.

M. Patrick "Mack" Mackenzie

Knots Landing

http://coolinthe80s.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/mack.jpg

One of the show's most popular characters, Mack blew into the cul de sac working as a special investigator for the governor but eventually ended up opening his own law practice, but Mack definitely had no shortage of a personal life...he romanced widow Karen Fairgate (Michele Lee) into remarriage and gave us one of prime time's strongest and most romantic marriages. He welcomed a grown daughter named Paige (Nicollette Sheridan) into his life as well as her mother, Anne (Michelle Phillips). He was there for childhood pal Greg Sumner (William Devane) when his wife died and convinced Karen to take in a young teenager (Thomas Wilson Brown) who Mack suspected was being physically abused by his father.

Gabrielle Solis

Desperate Housewives

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/tpqwVM0cHzQ/maxresdefault.jpg

After a couple of years playing a psycho on The Young and the Restless, Eva Longoria became a star playing this deliciously entertaining character...Gabrielle was a former model who married Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chavira) because he was rich and kept her dripping in furs and diamonds but her inner boredom with Carlos manifested itself in an affair with the 16 year old kid doing their yard work (Jesse Metcalfe).

Dr. Richard Webber

Grey's Anatomy

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8b5826e970b-pi

Dr. Webber, played by James Pickens Jr., was the Chief of Surgery for many years and the central father figure for most of the residents and was the only person who commanded any respect out of Miranda Bailey. It was revealed during the early seasons of the show that, as part of his backstory, Webber had an affair with Ellis Grey (Kate Burton), Meredith Grey's mother, a brilliant surgeon who neglected Meredith in favor of her career. I'm still hoping against hope that before this show goes off the air, we learn that Richard is really Meredith's father.

Sable Colby

Dynasty/The Colbys

http://dynastie.wifeo.com/images/s/sab/Sable.jpg

Sable, played by Stephanie Beacham, arrived in Denver as the manipulative cousin of Alexis (Joan Collins) and made such an impression that Aaron Spelling decided to spin her off into her own series, The Colbys. Prior to that, scenes between Beacham and Collins were definitely appointment television.

Conrad Grayson

Revenge

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/QgqOBLzbaHQ/maxresdefault.jpg

Henry Czerny was commanding and surprisingly sexy as the Grayson family patriarch who had so many secrets that he really couldn't keep track of them all and, as expected, led to his eventual downfall. Czerny's onscreen chemistry with Madeleine Stowe, who played his wife Victoria, was off the charts.

59.

Nick George

Dirty Sexy Money

http://cdn.pastemagazine.com/www/blogs/ctrl-v/nickgeorge.jpg

Peter Krause brought sincerity and sex appeal to a rather complex character. Nick George was an idealistic young attorney who agreed to take over as family attorney to the wealthy Darling family after his father, who held the job prior to him, was fished out of the ocean in a body bag. Sometimes it seemed like this guy had the hardest job on the planet...Nick had to cover up a lot of Darling dirt, neglecting his family in the process and fighting off the constant flirting of teenage sweetheart Karen Darling (Natalie Zea), the multi-divorced Darling daughter who has never really gotten over Nick and barely acknowledged the fact that Nick is now a married man with a daughter.

Miranda Hobbes Brady

Sex and the City

http://i.lv3.hbo.com/assets/images/series/sex-and-the-city/character/miranda-hobbes-1024.jpg

Some might not have thought of this show as a prime time soap, but I did and this was my favorite character on the show...Miranda (Emmy winner Cynthia Nixon) was a brilliant attorney who often let work get in the way of her social life but never let it get in the way of being there for BFF's Carrie, Samantha, and Charlotte. Miranda spoke without filter to her girlfriends and it caused a lot of tension but their friendship always endured. Miranda also found her world turned upside down when her romance with Steve Brady (David Eisenberg) resulted in an unplanned pregnancy. Pregnancy and motherhood weren't really part of Miranda's DNA and she fought it tooth and nail, resulting in a lot of funny and memorable moments and the show's most three dimensional character.

Peter Hollister

Knots Landing

http://hbfansite.weebly.com/uploads/1/6/2/3/1623999/6685445_orig.jpg

Hunt Block was sexy and charismatic as the manipulative business-savy wanna be who heated up as many bedrooms on the cul de Sac as he did board rooms at Lotus Point. The character juggled steamy affairs with Abby Ewing (Donna Mills), Paige Matheson (Nicollette Sheridan), and Abby's daughter Olivia (Tonya Crowe). Juggling these three women ended up resulting in his death and being buried under a block of cement.

Gideon58

56.

Kimberly Shaw

Melrose Place

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/riIqKVdbUOI/hqdefault.jpg

Marcia Cross should have won an Emmy for her work as this show's most fascinating character...Shaw arrived at the apartment complex as a brilliant doctor who, through some bizarre circumstances, was eventually revealed to be a full-fledged psychopath who, at one point, actually blew up the apartment complex. As crazy as she was, it didn't keep Michael Mancini (Thomas Calabro) from getting seriously involved with her.

55.

Huck

Scandal

https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/huckbloody.jpg

Guillermo Diaz has done some Emmy worthy work on this show as the tortured, conflicted member of Olivia Pope's team who has never been able to let go of his torture and training from a dangerous political organization that has actually turned him into a deadly assassin without him really realizing they were doing it. This character is explosive and unpredictable and after the recent season finale, possibly unredeem-able, but always riveting to watch.

Carlos Solis

Desperate Housewives

http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/desperate/images/3/36/Promo_715_10.png/revision/latest?cb=20120521142046

Ricardo Antonio Chavira brought major sexy to Wisteria Lane as the husband of the previously mentioned Gabrielle (Eva Longoria). Carlos was a bit of a groundbreaking character on serialized television in that he was probably one of the first Latino television characters who wasn't a janitor or a busboy. Carlos was a wealthy business executive and loved sharing the wealth with his trophy bride up to a point...when Carlos went to jail for insider trading, he refused to tell Gabrielle about hidden assets until she threatened to withdraw his legal representation by sleeping with the guy. Carlos loved Gabrielle but he also was well aware that his wealth was a primary drawing card to him for her, driven home by Carlos' explosive reaction to learning that Gabrielle was having an affair with the boy (Jesse Metcalfe) who did the Solis' yard work.

Adam Carrington

Dynasty

http://www.der-denver-clan.de/img/mdb/adam042_1.jpg

Gordon Thomson brought a smoldering intensity to the role of the black sheep son of the Carrington family. Adam's number one agenda was getting his father's approval and really didn't care what he had to do to get it. His mother Alexis (Joan Collins) always had his back but he didn't seem to care, the approval of Blake (John Forsythe) meant more to him than anything. While seeking Daddy's approval, Adam did find time to romance Matthew Blaisdel's wife Claudia (Pamela Bellwood), Sammy Jo (Heather Locklear), and Kirby (Kathleen Beller), the daughter of the family butler.

Amanda Woodward

Melrose Place

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/ba/Amanda_Woodward.jpg

When the initial ratings for the show were rather lackluster, Aaron Spelling decided to spice things up at the apartment complex by hiring his "good luck charm" Heather Locklear to play Amanda Woodward, the editor of a major magazine who also ended up owning the apartment complex. Amanda had a hate/hate relationship with her employee Allison (Courtney Thorne-Smith) that stemmed from Amanda sleeping with Allison's boyfriend Billy (Andrew Shue), and also had dalliances with Jake(Grant Show), Kyle (Rob Estes), and, of course, the previously mentioned Michael Mancini before eventually finding happiness with Dr. Peter Burns (Jack Wagner).

The MP era of Amanda, Kimberley and Sydney was the best. Especially Kimberley and Sydney.

I don't think of S&tC as a soap, but that's OK. I loved that show and, while I liked Miranda (and all the women) I think she was my least favourite. Hell, I thought she was everyone's least favourite. :D

Huck is a good character, but I'm really bored with the entire torture and B613 angle. It seemed to dull it down a little last season but we'll see. I nearly dropped this show after season 4 because of it.

Dynasty

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/ae/47/06/ae4706f231e1adbb6922b22dff19c13c.jpg

Chip Roberts

Knots Landing

http://soapchat.net/index.php?attachments/chipgrab6-copy-jpg.35431/

Sue Ellen Ewing

Dallas

https://dallasredoneblog.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/linda-gray-as-sue-ellen-ewing.jpg

Linda Gray did some very underrated work as the tortured wife of JR Ewing, who pretty much turned the woman into an alcoholic and any actress who can do scenes with Larry Hagman's JR and not be blown off the screen deserves mention here.

Gideon58
08-31-15, 09:19 PM
48.

Cyrus Beene

Scandal

http://www.tvequals.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Cyrus.jpg

Jeff Perry has been nothing short of brilliant as the personal assistant to President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) who protects the President at all costs, cleans up all presidential messes with unbelievable discretion but could not protect his husband (Dan Bucatinsky) who got caught in the middle of some of Cyrus' crossfire. Cyrus was fired from his job at the end of this season, but I'm pretty sure this is not the last we've seen of him because pretty much every scene this actor has done has been appointment television and a master course in television acting.

Felicia Tillman

Desperate Housewives

https://flowerysam.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/screen-shot-2011-07-18-at-03-12-06.png

Harriet Sansom Harris was often bone-chilling as the sister of Martha Huber who arrived on the Lane for her funeral but was curiously unmoved regarding her sister's death, but eventually found herself in a battle of wills with her sister's killer, Paul Young (Mark Moses) where she was so bent on revenge that she actually cut off two of her own fingers in an attempt to frame Paul for her murder. Felicia was one of those rare soap characters whose every move and breath made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Thanks. That's very kind of you. :)

I guess I've not had much to say mostly because I've not seen many of these. However, Dex I remember well as my mum had a huge crush on him. :D His scenes with Alexis were often the best part of that particular episode. Soaps are usually about the female characters, but Dex was a character in his own right. Though, obviously, without Alexis that wouldn't be the case.

I'm with you on Linda Gray, too. She was fantastic in Dallas and her reprisal of the role in the Dallas reboot was one of my favourite characters. Sue Ellen was often too whiney and pathetic for me to really like, whereas in the newer one she'd learned to be her own person. I noticed the pic you used was from the new Dallas. Should I expect to see any of the new characters appearing? I thought Josh Henderson turn as J.R.III was fantastic. Especially in that last season.

I don't know who my favourite character in Scandal is, but Cyrus Beene would be in the running and, as you said, Jeff Perry plays him wonderfully. It's the perfect blend of rat and puppy. Not an equal blend, of course, that wouldn't be perfect. You need to like him (or at least understand his motives) enough most of the time, but hate him when it all seems too much. Then he manages to win you back and redeem himself. It's a very well written and acted part.

Gideon58

I have to confess that I didn't realize the picture of Linda Gray I used was from the Dallas reboot, which I haven't seen. There won't be anyone else from the reboot on this list obviously, though I do remember Josh Henderson from Desperate Housewives.

Justin Walker

Brothers and Sisters

http://images.tvfanatic.com/iu/t_full/v1371129407/justin-walker-pic.png

Wilhemena Slater

Ugly Betty

http://www.dadt.com/uglybetty/assets/images/characters/character_wilhelmina.jpg

Vanessa Williams provoked laughs and hisses in this delicious send-up of Alexis Carrington...Wilhemena was the associate editor of a fashion magazine whose agendas all revolved around getting the editor-in-chief job away from Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius), a spoiled playboy she felt didn't deserve the job.

Constance McCashin played Laura, a housewife and mother of two sons who, after dumping her cheating husband Richard (John Pleshette), found a new career as a real estate agent and even found love again with the enigmatic Greg Sumner (William Devane), with whom she had a daughter named Meg. Not long after, Laura contracted cancer and left Knots Landing to die alone. Before she left, she made a videotaped message to her friends and family (the above photo is from that videotape) to say goodbye and everyone was invited to the Sumner ranch to watch it...this all happened in my favorite single episode of the show ever called "Noises Everywhere Part II", which had me weeping buckets the first time I saw it. The videotape ended with Laura reading a story for her daughter Meg.

I've not seen him in anything other than Dallas, so I don't really know if he's any better or worse. He was good, though, especially after JR died and his character had to kind of take on both.

I'd recommend the reboot, should you get the chance. If nothing else, it's nice to see the old gang again, as well as a few cameos here and there.

I really liked Brothers & Sisters, but I never really cared for Justin.

Rowan Pope

Scandal

http://d39ya49a1fwv14.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/scandal-2.jpg

After quietly toiling in this business as an actor since the 1970's, Joe Morton was finally awarded an Emmy for his bone-chilling work as the father of Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) who, on paper, has a job working at the Smithsonian, but is really the head of a deadly organization called B613 that has been responsible for more torture and death on this show than I care to mention.

Betty Suarez

Ugly Betty

http://www.dadt.com/uglybetty/assets/images/characters/character_betty.jpg

America Ferrara created the most unique heroine for a prime time soap ever...she was not really a maneater or manipulative or evil or prone to blackmailing people to get what she wanted...Betty was hired to be the personal assistant to magazine editor Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius) and all she wanted was to be the best assistant she could be. Betty did develop feelings for her boss at one point, but the writers smartly never crossed that line.

Andrew Van de Kamp

Desperate Housewives

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/desperate/images/e/e3/Andrew.png/revision/latest?cb=20120418222443

Andrew (Shawn Pyfrom) was the smart-ass son of Bree and Rex Van de Kamp who had a heated relationship with his mom, who he blamed for his dad divorcing her and for his eventual death. Andrew's relationship with Bree wasn't helped by the reveal that Andrew was gay and Bree sent him away to be "deprogrammed." Richard Burgi was slick and sexy as the ex-husband of Susan Meyer (Teri Hatcher) and father of Julie (Andrea Bowen) who left Susan after drifting into an affair with his secretary, Liza. After Liza dumped him, he slithered back to Wisteria Lane and after unsuccessfully attempting to reconcile with Susan, had affairs with Edie Britt (Nicollette Sheridan) and Bree Van de Kamp (Marcia Cross). Karl was such an entertaining character and Burgi always seemed to be having a ball playing him.

This show may have only completed its freshman season, but Oscar nominee Tariji P. Hensen has already created a classic prime time soap diva in this character. Hensen effectively chews the scenery as the ex-wife of record label owner Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) and the mother of his three sons, two of whom are artists on the label and one who works behind the scenes. Cookie has just been released from jail after 17 years on a drug-related charge, but it was drug money that helped Lucious start the record company and now Cookie has come back for her share of the pie and with Lucious being arrested for murder during the season finale, could Cookie be getting it all?

Dr. Alex Karev

Grey's Anatomy

https://anaalmazar.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/alex-3-alex-karev-8407097-624-3512.jpg

Justin Chambers has created an explosive, unpredictable and undeniably sexy character in Alex Karev...Alex somehow survived an extremely troubled childhood to graduate medical school and has actually found a passion for pediatrics...some of Alex's most memorable moments on the show have been with characters under the age of 12. Not that he hasn't stirred things up with the grown-ups, especially ones of the female persuasion...his on again/off again romance with Izzy (Katherine Heigl) was at times maddening and I have always loved his relationship with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) even though it has never been romantic. I'm not really feeling his current relationship with Dr. Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), but most fans seem to like it.

Tom Scavo

Desperate Housewives

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/it/e/ef/Tom_Scavo.jpg

Tom Scavo was the one husband on Wisteria Lane who pretty much let his wife be the man of the house. You could serve this guy on pie he was so whipped by his wife Lynette (Felicity Huffman), but he loved her dearly and their four children. He also stepped up when a fifth illegitimate child named Kayla came into his life; unfortunately her psycho mother (Kiersten Warren) was part of the deal. Tom was originally an advertising executive and at one point gave it up and decided to pursue his dream of opening up a pizza parlor but when that folded, he went back to advertising. At one point, Lynette was going crazy being at home and wanted to get back to work so Tom agreed, with no arm twisting, to stay home with the kids and be Mr. Mom while Lynette brought home the bacon.

President Fitzgerald Grant

Scandal

https://tribzap2it.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/tony-goldwyn-scandal-recap-abc.jpg

Tony Goldwyn, an actor known for playing against type (seen Ghost lately?) struck gold and so did Shonda Rhimes when she cast this seriously underrated actor as the President of the United States, who won the election through some not so kosher means but didn't learn that until years later, whose First Lady, Mellie (Bellamy Young) is jealous vindictive schemer with her own political aspirations, but is really in love with Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), a DC "Fixer" who was originally his campaign manager and as much as neither will admit it, Fitz and Olivia are still in love with each other and always will be, despite the fact that Olivia became seriously involved with Jake Ballard (Scott Foley) this season and Fitz threw Mellie out of the White House during the season finale. This is an extremely complex character and Goldwyn makes him flawed and fascinating. As far as I know, the only fictional President of the United States who has actually committed murder.

Dr. Meredith Grey

Grey's Anatomy

https://www.theedgesusu.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/greys-anatomy.jpg

Ellen Pompeo has managed to keep the central character of this show interesting for almost a decade now. Meredith is a doctor who met a man in a bar the day before she started her new job at Seattle Grey hospital and was floored when said man (Patrick Dempsey) turned out to be her new boss and the rest is history. Meredith has been at the center of this show for years and has had quite the backstory built around her, including a brilliant surgeon mother (Kate Burton) who succumbed to Alzheimer's and had a passionate affair with Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), an alcoholic father (Jeff Perry) and two half-sisters, one of whom died in a plane crash that Meredith survived. And through it all at Meredith's side has been her "person" Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) a cardiac surgeon who is all about her work.

Gary was passionate and ambitious but a little naive and did the majority of his thinking below the waist...it didn't take a lot of effort for Abby Ewing (Donna Mills) or Jill Bennett (Teri Austin) to make Gary forget his marriage vows to Valene, despite the fact that they had twin babies, who in a memorable storyline, were kidnapped and returned to the couple. Gary was also a little hot-headed...when he learned that his business venture called Empire Valley, was being funded by dirty money, he blew it up.

Paul Young

Another character who made the hair on the back of my neck stand up...Paul was the husband of Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong), the character whose suicide occurred in the pilot and also served as the show's narrator. Among Paul's most memorable deeds, he kept son Zach (Cody Kasch) in the dark about his real parents and when nosy neighbor Martha Huber (Christine Estabrook) learned about it, he murdered her, which got him involved in a battle of wills with Martha's sister, Felicia, who eventually framed Paul for her murder. Mark Moses' work as this character was so creepily effective because, on the surface, the character was so quiet and unassuming, the actor rarely spoke above a stage whisper...possibly Wisteria Lane's creepiest character.

Grey's Anatomy

https://theproactiveprofessional.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/cristina-yang.jpg

Sandra Oh was robbed of at least a couple of Emmys for her work as this show's most fascinating and complex characters...Cristina was a brilliant cardio surgeon who was all about her work and let absolutely nothing get in the way of being the very best she could be, including men. She left Dr. Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) at the altar and didn't even get that far with Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd)...she broke it off with him when he wanted to have children and she didn't. Cristina had no connection with children at all...whenever her "person" Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) would ask Cristina to hold one of her babies, she always held the child like a sack of potatoes. Cristina left Seattle at the end of this season to head a new cardiac hospital in Paris run, ironically, by Preston Burke.

Donald Sutherland was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the wealthy patriarch of the Darling family, a dynasty not unlike the Kennedys with just as many secrets. In two seasons Tripp had lawyer Nick George (Peter Krause) cover up the accidental death of his eldest son Patrick's wife and then broke up his romance with a tranvestite (Candis Cayne). He pimped out his daughter Karen (Natalie Zea) to his sworn enemy Simon Elder (Blair Underwood); bought a role in a Broadway play for his daughter Juliet (Samaire Armstrong) who can't act and made her twin Jeremy (Seth Gabel) start at the bottom of his company by working as a parking valet. Amanda Clarke/Emily Thorne

Revenge

https://emilyvancamp.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/emily-vancamp-blog-revenge-season-1-promoshoot.jpg

After a supporting role on Brothers and Sisters, Emily Van Camp proved she had the chops to carry the lead in a prime time soap which was pretty much centered around one storyline for her character. Amanda Clarke is a woman who, after years of training, preparation, and research, comes to the Hamptons and assumes the identity of a girl she was in juvenile detention with the intention of clearing her deceased father's name by getting revenge on the power couple, Conrad and Victoria Grayson (Henry Czerny, Madeleine Stowe), who Amanda believes set up her father as being responsible for the death of hundreds of people in a plane crash and had a role in his death. This character was too cool and re-defined the word "bad-ass"...she had what seemed like unlimited capital to support her mission with a help of a young millionaire computer hacker named Nolan Ross (Gabriel Mann) and really didn't care who she hurt in pursuit of her mission (or so it seemed), but no matter what happened, Emily never took her eye off the prize.

Gregory Sumner

Knots Landing

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g261/GregSumner/1988-sumner.jpg

The amazing William Devane created one of prime time television's most complex and enigmatic characters. Gregory Sumner was a wealthy industrialist with his own company called The Sumner Group, but he wanted much more. An old college chum of Mack Mackenzie (Kevin Dobson), we learned that they were both seeing Anne Matheson (Michelle Phillips) and that the paternity of Paige (Nicollette Sheridan) was in question for awhile. Sumner was a shark in business and had no mercy on anyone in that department and rarely spoke with any kind of filter. Greg was sort of a social hermit though, not allowing anyone to get close to him, until he met Laura Avery (Constance McCashin), a divorced real estate agent who somehow was able to break down the wall between Greg and the rest of society. Greg and Laura had a baby girl together named Meg and shortly after, Laura contracted cancer and, not wanting to die a vegetable in front of her family, she chose to leave town and die, leaving a videotaped message to Greg and the rest of the cul de sac. After watching the section of the tape Laura made for him, tears streamed down his cheeks and he stopped the tape and told Laura, "You left me in a bad spot, Red." Greg had a built a giant dollhouse for Meg which he set on fire a week later and eventually decided he didn't even want to raise Meg and agreed to let Karen and Mack Mackenzie raise her. Greg remained alone until he met Paige Matheson who somehow got through to him and sparked one of prime time's sexiest relationships. How Devane or anyone else on this show never won an Emmy or never even received a nomination is such a mystery to me.

OK, admit it, there are a few of you out there who thought this character was going to be number one, but number 2 is pretty damn good. Alexis originally arrived in Denver to testify at the murder trial of ex-husband Blake (John Forsythe). The character appeared at the end of the first season finale wearing a huge hate and veil because the role hadn't been cast yet. One of the show's creators, Esther Shapiro was actually under that hat and veil. Sophia Loren was originally approached to play the role but turned it down. The powers-to-be turned to B-movie queen Joan Collins, who accepted the role and the rest is history. When the term prime-time soap is mentioned, this is usually the first character that people think of...Alexis was larger than life and consistently entertaining.

This list was harder than I thought it was going to be, there are so many great characters to choose from. Here are some honorable mentions:

Dr. Calliope Torres, Grey's Anatomy
Daniel Grayson, Revenge
Michael Fairgate, Knots Landing
Karen Darling, Dirty Sexy Money
Dr. Owen Hunt Grey's Anatomy
Quinn Perkins, Scandal
Joshua Rush, Knots Landing
Steven Carrington Dynasty
Sydney Andrews, Melrose Place
Lisa George, Dirty Sexy Money
Ellis Grey, Grey's Anatomy
Dr. Derek Shepherd, Grey's Anatomy
Lilliemae Clements, Knots Landing
Tish Darling, Dirty Sexy Money
Abby Whelan, Scandal

And now my # 1 Prime Time Soap Character:

Dr. Derek Shepherd

Grey's Anatomy

Patrick Dempsey reignited a dead career when he accepted the role of a brilliant surgeon whose ego sometimes overshadowed his skill who met a girl (Ellen Pompeo) in a bar one night and it began a relationship that lasted almost a decade. Dempsey received so much attention from females on both sides of the screen that the character was nicknamed "McDreamy."

Didn't I see Dr. McDreamy already listed yesterday?
And I don't remember seeing Nolan Ross from "Revenge" on your list yesterday.

Did you change some posts?

Yes, I did, I had to include JR Ewing and I had to lose Derek Shepherd...including Nolan Ross was also a must.

I'm glad you included Nolan Ross. I couldn't imagine this list without him.

Abby Ewing

Knots Landing

Those big blue eyes, that gorgeous blonde hair, the flawless figure, the endless sexual heat and unabashed bitchines this character provided made her my favorite prime time soap character. Abby was the cul de sac's answer to Alexis Carrington, she arrived as the sister of Sid Fairgate (Don Murray) and within a couple of seasons, got both Richard Avery (John Pleshette) and Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford) to cheat on their respective spouses...hell, Abby even got JR Ewing into bed. I think Abby can best be summed up by one memorable scene she had with Valene Ewing (Joan Ark Van Ark). Valene confronted Abby to ask her if she was having an affair with her husband, Gary to which Abby replied, "I'm not saying that I am and I'm not saying that I'm not, but I will say that I could have Gary anytime I want to." Abby's only vulnerability was with her children, details of which can be found on "My Favorite TV Moms" list.

Hope you enjoyed the list.

I don't watch a lot of Prime Time Soap Operas, but I always enjoy reading your lists.

Congrats on finishing your list, Gideon. JR, Alexis and Olivia Pope are all great choices. Kerry Washington was the reason I started watching Scandal. I've just always found her so attractive, but now she's getting older she's absolutely gorgeous. JR and Alexis really are soap legends, so there's little more I can add there.

I still don't really care about Jake Ballard. I like what his character does insofar as getting between Olivia and Fitz, but I can't say I'm a fan.

Totally agree with you regarding the aging process of Kerry Washington...she's like Raquel Welch, the older she gets, the better looking she gets.
