Even though I'm not quite as addicted to video games as I used to be, I have just gotten back into playing The Witcher 3 and I must say that it is a very good game, definitely the best next-gen RPG so far.
This got me thinking of the many great RPGs I played over the years, I know that we got some gamers on here, and I'm interested in hearing what some of your favorite RPGs are.
One of my all-time favorites is definitely The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, everything about that game was just so epic. The quest where you first become a werewolf and then get set loose on a pack of werewolf hunters is still one of my favorite gaming moments. The game also did a phenomenal job with handling the very cliche use of dragons. Giving them their own language and having your character speak it and gaining amazing powers while doing so was awesome. The main storyline involving the dragons was great, and it had some of the best side-quests ever in an RPG that I've played. Just a fantastic game all-around.
Another one that I had a lot of fun playing is Dragon Age: Origins. It played very much like a conventional RPG with turned-based combat and a party following you around, but it did those things very well and on top of it had a pretty awesome storyline. It also had one of my favorite endings, it was generic RPG fare (spoiler alert: the ending boss is a dragon) but it was a tough fight and it was very satisfying to be able to take it down and have you and your party members celebrating in grand fashion afterwards. Then the ending credits rolled and then a 30 Seconds to Mars song started playing—I couldn't think of a better way for the game to end! I downloaded the song literally like 30 seconds (pun intended) after the credits ended.
I'm not sure if Kingdom Hearts is considered an RPG, or just an action/adventure game, but I'll include it anyways. I'm pretty sure most of you know about it. It's one of my all-time favorite games. A mix of Disney and Final Fantasy that is impossible to resist.
Last one I want to mention is World of Warcraft. I was completely addicted to this game for about 5 years. No other game pulled me like WoW did; I quested, I raided, I pvp'ed, I did freaking everything in that game. I had two max leveled characters, one Alliance and one Horde. I can't even begin to fathom how much time I put into that game. When the Cataclysm expansion came out in I think 2011 was when I finally stopped. Needless to say though, there were times where I had a lot of fun on that game, and I met dozens of people on there that I talked to all the time. Sadly I never kept in touch with any of them after I quit playing, there were some really awesome people on there (my favorite was a 60 year old Canadian guy that I would get in long conversations with about pretty much anything) Sometimes I feel a little tempted to start playing again... but I think know better. :p

I'll need to get back to you on this but my list would probably start with Arcanum and include Witcher 3, where I've embarked on the New Game + mode and am doing the starting areas again with lvl 35 wolves and a resolution to use Quen as little as possible.
Some chance. :p
Kingdom Hearts is my favourite video game series ever  I love everything about it. The first one is probably my favourite though, I always felt it was the darkest and that was really strange considering half of the characters come from innocent films, like I remember fighting with Ariel was so cool yet so bizarre at the same time

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
I didn't even play this game until a year after it came out, for some reason I had never heard of the Elder Scrolls series before this game which is weird. The minute I started playing it I fell in love with it, and I still play it to this day. I also play some WoW as well every once in a while.
And I also live playing Bethesda's other series Fallout and I cannot wait for Fallout 4 to come out this year.
And Dragon Age: Inquisition, the character creator in that game is insane and the world is huge and not as restricted as Dragon Age II was.

I'm looking forward to it! Yeah Witcher 3 is really good, I'm maybe 8-10 hours in. I stopped for a couple months because a save bug erased everything I did in an hour plus session and I was kinda mad about it. I finally started playing again about a week ago and am getting back into it again.

I absolutely love the first game, I remember getting it for my 11th birthday and it's still one of my favorite games ever. Agreed with the dark tone of the first game, it was crazy seeing those Disney characters in that light. I loved the second one also, I remember going crazy over the Steamboat Willie world, and the final boss fight was awesome. I wasn't a fan of the handheld games at all though, I just wanted KH3 and have been waiting so long for it. At least we know it's finally coming out! :)
Vampir for me (aka RPG-29) :)
Not familiar with that one. Could you say a little bit about the game?

I think part of why I love Skyrim so much might be partly due with the day I got it. It was release day (I still remember the date: 11-11-11 :p) I was mega-hyped for it. So hyped that I made sure to completely clear my schedule so I could play it all day. I woke up at like 8 in the morning and drove over to the nearest store. I went over to the electronics section but didn't see it! The guy who worked there told me that they didn't get it in for some dumb reason. I was now mega-pissed because I had to then drive to the closest GameStop which was about a 20 minute drive, but then I needed to wait for over an hour and a half because they didn't open til 10. So then while I waited I called my friend up and I hung out with him til the store opened.
When the time came to go my friend decided to come with me, I was talking to him about how much I wanted to play the game and how awesome it was gonna be, I think he just thought it was funny how crazy I was being about it. When we got there lo and behold it was packed, with Skyrim stuff everywhere. A big statue of the Dovahkin right inside the door, music from the game playing in the store, and like 4 TVs showing footage from the game. There was a long line and I just heard everyone when they got to the counter saying "Skyrim?" "Skyrim?" "I'm here to pick up Skyrim." and then one of the workers was on the phone and I heard him shout "If you want Skyrim you're gonna have to come in here and get it!" Then he violently hung up the phone. I thought that was hilarious. While we were waiting in line for a bit my friend said he thought he heard someone say you could only get it if you preordered it.
Oh boy. I didn't preorder it and now I was starting to think I wasn't gonna be able to get it. I started to get extremely nervous and irritated and told my friend things that I'm gonna do something I'm not gonna repeat here if I didn't get a copy (I'll just say that what I told my friend made him laugh really loud in the middle of the store) After about a 15 minute wait the moment of truth came, I pathetically begged for a copy that I didn't preorder, the guy who worked there just laughed and said yeah they had a couple available. A huge wave of relief came and I got my hands on my copy and held onto it for dear life. My friend who wasn't even planning on going there randomly decided to buy an Xbox 360 console right then and there, which I thought was kinda funny. I stayed with my friend for a little bit but then I told him "No offense man, but I waited 4 hours to get this game, I'm gonna go play it now."
Then I went home and played for it for I think 9 hours straight. :p

It really was, I loved fighting with the Disney characters more than anything I think, I remember barely being able to tap anything when Donald and Goofy first fought alongside me
I really liked the second one too! Although I hated what they did with Maleficent, and I wished it had been as dark as the first one. The only handheld one I've played is 358/2 days (if that's right ) and yeah, I didn't like it at all. Birth By Sleep seems pretty good though.
I'm so excited for KH3  I currently don't have a console, but I'd probably buy one just to play it! Sora and Kairi had better happen as well, I'm sick of them avoiding this bit

Yeah, I took a break from the game while they were working out the big patch which resolved a lot of issues and gave us the alternate control scheme. 105 hours in now but I think they've mucked up the achievements again - I'm pretty sure I got the one where you use Axii to kill an enemy via a mind-controlled one but it didn't register.
Achievements never usually bother me but I'm using the second playthrough to hoover up the ones I didn't get (and the final 5 or 6 were bugged and never appeared) first time round.
Anyway, my favourite RPG is Arcanum Colon Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura from 2001.
It was by Troika, a team comprising of most of the guys who made the original Fallout. A lot of them are now at Obsidian. ;)
A non-linear (ish) open world (ish) game set in a Steampunk and magic-heavy world with huge amounts of character customisation, dialogue and ways round problems. It was, like most of Troika's games, buggy on release and didn't sell terribly well but the community has patched out any problems and the GOG release can run on modern systems with ease.
I think the mechanics are as good as Fallout's (although combat is worse) but the world is so much more interesting. It's also got a killer score...

Love me some Pokemon. Good call, Slinger.
I prefer action RPG games like Legend of Zelda for the SNES to the "Japanese style" or the MMOs where "leveling up" is the main priority.
IMO the latter type is flawed as a concept since it boils down to repetition and "status" over skill - unless you're just looking for a casual game and playing just for the story rather than the game-play itself. (Neverwinter Nights is one that I like since the story and dialogue is good enough to hold your interest).
I always get lost on what classifies an rpg. My gut always says turn-based, but apparently those days are gone.
Not totally sure - basically it involves some concept of "getting stronger" or learning new skills as you progress so that you can explore new areas or defeat tougher opponents than you could before.
I consider games like Legend of Zelda to be action RPGs.

I always think of rpg as a number battle (probably what D&D is). Nowadays a bunch seem like action/adventure games with stat-building.

I am pretty sure the "R" in RPG is important. Most RPGs have classes or allow you to mold your character into a certain build, class, species, etc.
Just the obvious ones Final Fantasy, Zelda, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, etc. The only one I can think of that I really enjoyed when I was younger that hasn't been mentioned is Square Enixs The Last Remnant.
Whoever plays Persona needs to speak up!
A game based on the film Persona? What the hell would you do? Guess which chick is which? Go on a magical journey to find Liv Ullmann's lost voice?

As much as I do like the Fallout series and Elder Scrolls series, if we're talking absolute favourites then only one name stands above the rest...

So many games have RPG elements these days (like the above Deus Ex) that the lines have become very blurred as to what is and what isn't. You could just as easily call Deus Ex a shooter or a stealth game, depending on how you play.
Character classes/creation, levelling up, buffs/debuffs etc are all expected in rpgs but also appear in many other genres now. To be honest, if the developer says their game is an rpg that's good enough for me.
These days I think the main strands of the genre are the traditional C(omputer)RPG (Baldurs Gate, Pillars of Eternity, Fallout 1 & 2), the A(ction)RPG (Diablo, Titan Quest, Torchlight), the J(apanese)RPG (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest) and the S(trategy)RPG (HOMM, The Banner Saga).
Stuff like the Elder Scrolls games are harder to pin down but I'd say they are ARPGs at heart. Mass Effect is even weirder: 1 was an ARPG but 2 and 3 had their mechanics streamlined/dumbed down to the extent that you could make the argument for them not being rpgs at all but story-driven action games with rpg elements.

Good point. There should be an easier way of determining what side of the action/RPG scale a film ends up leaning towards (like I'd say Deus Ex is more of an RPG than, say, BioShock).

I agree. Bioshock has you equipping and levelling up various (for want of a better word) weapons but your character stays the same throughout.

I agree that today it's harder to tell just what is an actual RPG. The main reason I think is because so many games today are implementing RPG elements into their games. Nowadays it doesn't matter if it's a shooter, platformer, stealth game, adventure game etc. it's more than likely gonna have some kind of leveling system. Or you're gonna gain experience points to unlock new skills and stuff like that. Of course all of those elements came from RPGs, but they are now becoming staples of video games in general.

How about Pokémon Red? I spent a lot of time playing this pixelated goodness! I remember having played 10 hours of it with no breaks one day and then felt like my eyes are gonna explode. I went to sleep and when I closed my eyes, I had some images from the game showing up.
Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader is another RPG I loved. As far as I remember I never even finished it, but it was a really nice game.

I played some of Blue but it was when I was very little (like 6 or 7) so I barely remember it. I do remember playing Yellow a bit though, I remember liking it because it had a lot of stuff from the TV show in it. It was funny facing Team Rocket. I remember playing Gold also, which was really good. I stopped playing them after that one though.
I also did play Deus Ex, but just like many games from that era I played it once and can't remember it really. All I know is that I didn't get far into it and was very confused. :p

Luckily, Deux Ex Human Resources Revolution is excellent and still really playable with 2015 thumbs. The less said about Invisible War the better. ;)

Yeah it's also kinda weird how I can barely remember anything about it. For example playing Half-Life for the first time was very memorable, and I played both games around the same time-frame, but I can't remember what happened in Deus Ex at all.
