View Full Version : What is Your Current Favorite Song?
Not necessarily what you would consider your favorite song of all-time, but the song you have been loving lately, the one that's been playing on repeat, that you can't get enough of and that gives you a musical high.

Sometime around Xmas I was visiting my sister for her Bday in a town close by. We went bar hopping. Ended up at the bar where this guy was playing. I was pretty lit if you know what I mean, but dude blew my socks off. The talent oozing out of this kid is unreal. He is like a solo Black Keys. He is a local kid, really hard to find his stuff on the net. But I ended up finding a few songs on SoundCloud and it was just as good as it was live. It's just going take the right person to hear him and I hope it happens. I've been trying to catch him live again but it's so hard to get info on him, must do it part time. But I found out he is playing tomorrow night in town again. I'm so going be there to make sure I wasn't too hammered to impair my judgement.
Anyways he has like 4 songs on that sound cloud. Hole In One being my favorite. Enjoy!

I've discovered that I'm a big fan of ZZ Top's latest effort Mescalero (album). I particularly like the title track and 'punk ass boyfriend'.
Really grungy, heavy sound they started with the album Rhythmeen and perfected with this one.
I remember them before they scored air play (being a Houstonian familiar with the Balinese Ballroom) and like them even better now.

Actually, I am an idiot. I know what my current favorite song is. Woody Guthrie's "Great Dust Storm." I've seen some people criticize it for being "dry" on youtube and stuff like that. I don't really get that at all, it's some pretty dark stuff about the world seemingly coming to an end. Though on second thought, maybe the person calling it dry was just being cheeky. Of course it's dry, it's about f*cking dust swirling around and consuming people and their entire world, completely scaring the wits out of them, which you know is a result of things being too dry. The imagery is beyond frightening. You couldn't hop on Facebook and check on your loved ones, you couldn't text your dad and ask him where he and Mom are. While listening to his Dust Bowl Ballads compilation*, I experienced an outbreak of chills on more than one occasion. The most lasting impression was this track though.

*two of his LPs bizarrely combined into one 50 years later by intertwining them with the tracklist alternating between songs from each album for some reason

The only flaw I find with the Sisters of Mercy's goth-rock masterpiece Floodland is that its last two tracks are by far the weakest on the album and so I am convinced that any of the bonus tracks on the remastered edition would make for better closers (including the 12-minute version of "Never Land", which is cut down to about 2-3 minutes and loses a lot of power in the process). Given the choice, I would most definitely give the edge to the Sisters delivering an emotionally staggering cover of Hot Chocolate's "Emma", which is currently "my jam" in the parlance of our times.

The YT clip you posted, MovieGal. The Blind Melon one. It says it's unavailable in my country. I'm getting these from time to time. Where the hell do I live? Freakin' Antarctica?!
Terrible song, Miss Vicky and the second one by MovieGal. Why aren't you listening to porngrind? That's sooo in your style.
That's a pretty good song, Camo. I only know Mollusk from this band. I rated it rating_3_5.
I remember myself being disappointed with Pet Sounds, jiraffejustin. Sure, it is a pretty good album, but after all the hype i expected two slimy tongues coming out from my headphones and licking my ears while whispering sexy words in Japanese. I only got some nice tunes. Guthrie is interesting, though, although I've heard similar sound from these times.
Amish Paradise is a song I've known for a very long time. A decent parody, but I'd never have considered it a good song I could seriously listen to every day.
The Sisters of Mercy are an amazing band and Floodland is freakin' awesome. I've never listened to their other albums. Now I see what mistake that was. Oh, so the song comes from the remastered edition of Floodland... Interesting. It's glorious.
Painkiller is a cool song. I remember it was impossible in Frets on Fire. :P
Priest's 2015 album was a big surprise for me. I fell in love with it! Kudos, RealHero.
Nausicaä! The Stone Roses is one of my favourite albums of all time! Timeless masterpiece!

Not only a viscerally beautiful song, but also quite a story behind it. It was the first song ever recorded in Korean (it was recorded in Japan). The singer of this depressive song commited double suicide with a man she fell in love with, but couldn't marry. He was already taken, but loved her, too, so they both jumped into the water and drowned. This song was recorded not so long before that happened. You can hear the depression and incredible sadness in her voice. If it's not gloomy for you enough, look up the lyrics:
First verse:
Through the vast wilderness, in this life of uncertainties
You are running, yet where are you going?
In this lonely world, through the rough seas,
What are you searching for?
Chorus:
This world that will become tears, will everything end if I die?
Those lives searching for happiness,
it is really sadness that you are seeking for.
Second verse:
Those smiling flowers, and those crying birds,
Their destinies would all be the same.
Engrossed in living this miserable life,
You are the one dancing on the blade of a knife.
Third verse:
This far-flung life that has fallen to vanity,
You are being deceived, don't you know?
Everything in this world to you is emptiness;
After you die, nothing exists anymore.
The unadultered, genuine expression of hopelessnes and depression years before Depressive Black Metal. This and Gloomy Sunday are two of the most depressing songs ever!
Bitchin' riff. I tried playing it on my guitar, but in Drop D tuning. Given up before even starting, but was playin' around some ideas for some time.
It's so much fun to play, dude. It rekindled my love of just rocking out with power chords to a song. The riff is seemingly simple but then you start playing it and there is something with the rhythm that makes it take a second to get down. I can play it now though, almost perfectly, though not quite up to speed yet.

I can play it now though, almost perfectly, though not quite up to speed yet. My biggest problem always was that I wasn't patient enough. I'd learn the song fast without learning it slow beforehand and therefore play it pretty sloppy and unevenly.

Going at a comfortable speed and using a metronome to get the timing and rhythm down helps me a lot. I would think I'd get impatient too, but surprisingly, lately I just like playing guitar - I don't really care what it is, and so I do a lot of boring stuff that will improve my technical proficiency because I'm Superdork. Of course, I jam to my favorite songs as well. What kind of guitarist would I be if I didn't?
but srsly metronome bro

I've always had a thing for obscure songs. I'd always find a "B-side" song that was never played on the radio and that many never heard of and think that was a much better song than whatever made the "Top-10."
That brings us to Sha-Na-Na (okay, I'll give you a minute to stop laughing).
This group was known for doing covers of Doo-Wop music, appearing live at Woodstock in 1969, appearing in the movie Grease (under a different name) and for their extremely goofy 1970's musical variety TV show. But most people don't know that the group had a repertoire on some of their albums that did not feature Doo-Wop cover songs.
So here now from the "B-Side" of Sha Na Na's "Gold Boots" album: an original, non-Doo-Wop song written by Screamin' Scott Simon: "Only One Song in the World."

Yeah, I recently re-listened to all three of their main albums and am starting to think of First and Last and Always as an extremely solid example of dark '80s post-punk to the point where it's only just under Floodland in my estimation (at the very least, it's a lot more consistent in terms of track quality and at least ends on its highest note rather than an anticlimax). That being said, I'm not that big a fan of Vision Thing because a couple of the tracks do feel like Eldritch selling out a bit as he tried to distance himself from Gothic rock and instead aimed for a more industrial-sounding tone (but not without a couple of ballads of varying quality). The B-sides and rarities compilation Some Girls Wander By Mistake is also worth checking out, especially for "Valentine", which definitely comes across as a rough draft for their cover of "Emma".

I had one a long time ago, Painkiller was my official favorite song if I were asked. It's the pinnacle of heavy metal in a sense.
Edit: Oh, I noticed that Gunslinger45 had already posted that song here. :D Makes me happy!
Anyway, Though I would guess in recent years a particular favorite "song" of mine is this 8 minute composite of 3 tracks from my favorite Black Sabbath album, last and longest is called Valhalla:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEUrhtxo7aE
I was also very fond of Iron Maiden's 13 minute epic Rime of the Ancient Mariner as well as Helloween's 13 minute epic Keeper of the Seven Keys at some points.
Thought right now I would think another song named Valhalla is my favorite "current" one, also very long:

Pink Floyd - Time (it's been my favorite song since I was 14)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL3AgkwbYgo
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.
I've been listening to these songs continuously for ages now
