Instrumentals Song Tournament

This tournament is open to pieces of music as long as they have absolutely no vocals - not even one word! Each nomination must also please be limited to no longer than ten minutes duration, whilst this may exclude a few fantastic longer instrumental pieces it has to be remembered some of us have lives outside these forums too (at least that's the rumour) ;)
Admission for participation is now CLOSED, many thanks to those that have joined!
Y'all know the general rules of one of these but for those that are new to the process...
As usual nominations will go head to head in each round with the winner progressing and the loser falling by the wayside to perhaps live and fight another day in another tournament (no pieces of music will be harmed by this process).
Please indicate over the next couple of days if you wish to participate and once the final number of participants is known the exact number of selections required will be determined (it should be at least eight each so feel free to start nominating straight away).
For selections please do not post videos but URL links (if you are unaware how to do this please just ask). All selections must have links provided to them to enable voting, Youtube is the most popular source but as long as a link is accessible in the various countries of those taking part any free and legal source that does not require one to sign-up to is acceptable. Please post your links with the textual nominated artist and song such as: Clive Dunn - Grandad (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zFbrA_P2uu0).
When voting you must listen to both pieces. Voting on each round is intended to be open for 24 hours but may be closed earlier if all nominating participants have voted or extended if voting is close and not all nominating participants have yet voted. Voting is not restricted purely to those that have nominated songs but for those that have not they must vote from the beginning of the tournament to continue voting beyond the first round. Unless a tie-breaking vote is requested, anyone without nominations who hasn't voted consistently will not be allowed to vote in the final rounds.

I mourned, though. I am over it now. :D
Seriously, though, I am kind of hoping that we can add a couple more songs (maybe) because I have at least 8 more that I could easily use. This was hard for me. I look at my list and I think "Do I want to take (blank) away from this list for (blank)?", but I just can't do it. I like my list. And I really like what I have as "extras". I don't know what to do!
These song tournaments always put me into such dilemmas. :D

Two things:
1. I kind of wish that the Gershwin overture would've been the Broadway version (yes, I can tell the difference - the orchestra has a "stronger" sound)
2. I would've voted for that Gershwin piece no matter what because I think I am the only person that isn't crazy about Chopin. I've tried for years to really get into him, and I just can't. But, seriously, everyone else can love him if they want to. :D Vote for Chopin to your heart's content. :) I don't mind. :)

I must've heard the Barber before but I heard it in Terence Davies film A Deep Blue Sea (a director I feel an affinity for) which is set in shabby post war London where a sad woman with a staid husband is having an affair with a feckless guy who is pretty horrible to her. sadly it doesn't look like it's going through, but I'm the same. Whenever I think about that piece of music I have to go and find it again and listen over and over . There's something about that bit of repeated melody (there must be a word for that , Neiba would know. Hook is what you'd call it if it were a pop song!) that's absolutely entrancing

Of all the draws with my own nominations, this was the only one I admit I could have serious doubts! Blue in Green is a legendary song from probably the best album in jazz history. Carlos Paredes, for those who don't know him, is the master of the portuguese guitar, an instrument with a beautiful sound as you can hear. The specific song is very cherished by portuguese university students because it's part of a great tradition.

Philip Glass - Osamu's Theme vs. Massenet - Meditation (from "Thais") - I do like the Massenet, but I liked the music from Mishima A Life in Four Chapters, one of the best things about a film I struggled through.

Yann Tiersen- Frida vs. Kalifa and Moustapha Dembélé - instrumental for balaphon and n'goni from Segou, Mali - Frida is good, and I loved Yann Tiersen's music for Amelie, but the Malian music is really great. I spent an excellent afternoon listening to West African music but it was hard to find one where the crowd weren't clapping and whooping with delight during the singing :D I love the idea that the griots pass the music down through lots of generations and it's still going.

Antonio Vivaldi - Four Seasons (Winter) vs. How to be a Werewolf- Mogwai - I like the Four Seasons but love Mogwai. That track is off the album of music for the French mystery series Les Revenants of which the music they use for the opening is brilliant. Can't wait for the second series.
Kondo - Super Mario World Ending Theme vs. Antonio de Lucena - Estudo Cano - Like I said before I'm too old for computer music to produce nostalgia votes, but Estudo Cano is good too so voted for that :)
Saint-Saëns - Aquarium vs. Purcell - March (from Funeral of Queen Mary) - I knew Aquarium before. I always thought it was particularly mysterious, but never knew what it was called or who it was by, so that's my thing learnt for today! The March is fantastic, but too sombre for today
Theme from "Psycho" - Bernard Herrmann vs. Duke Ellington and his Kentucky Club Orchestra - East St Louis Toodle-Oo - Of course the theme from Psycho is a masterpiece of film music, but the other one is mine and as I don't see it getting many votes. It's a very dinky track which I've liked it since I heard it when I bought Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic years ago. When I was compiling my list I went and traced it back and found this great Duke Ellington version. I like it anyway :)

Sadly aye, really. Only in round 1 do I ensure no two pieces from the same participant are matched together, from round 2 onwards it can and does happen. I've had a look ahead and two of mine are pitted against each other on Day 4 of this round too. It's the way these tournaments have been managed (aside from the rare exception where even in round 1 participants songs could go against each other) since I joined the site.
Yeah I'm fine with it. I was just surprised those two songs were up against each other this early.

I am SO sorry for missing it! I just had a horrible migraine. I honestly considered coming on here just to do this, but I just couldn't do anything. My migraines are usually a two day process of being unwell and then "recovering". Again, I am very sorry.
