My Current Top 20 Favourite Songs
July 2015
Ok, so as the title says I am going to list my current top 20 favourite songs. Some of these songs may be new to me and I have been listening to them daily. However, some of these songs I don't often listen to, this doesn't mean I dislike them or anything though. It just means that when I do listen to them they bring back good memories and allow me to enjoy them more.
Because my tastes in certain songs and artists change somewhat regular, and my moods change too, I will be making more of these lists (for new additions that I hadn't heard of before and/or to edit certain songs with others I may have forgotten but adore).
Also, I would like to give a quick shoutout to Gatsby & Derek Vinyard for this idea.
Ok, so lets start!
20. Coldplay - The Scientist
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB-RcX5DS5A
This is one of those that I had forgotten about until compiling my list. I really do like this song and it is always nice to stumble upon something which you have forgotten about. You may think that it is strange to add a song you had forgotten about to a top 20 list but with my favourites changing fairly often it can sometimes be easy to forget some of the tracks you really adore.
19. Pink Floyd - Another Brick in The Wall
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrxX9TBj2zY
This one takes me back to when I was at school. My step-dad told me to listen to this song (however, I believe I had heard it before this time). I remember this because I didn't know the title and always assumed it was called "We Don't Need no Education". I probably liked this piece because I didn't enjoy school all that much and it was the hip thing (I guess) to believe in even if I didn't really know the true meaning of the song. A similar piece would be Alice Coopers "School's Out" which brings back specific memories of leaving school for the summer, however the song itself really hasn't stuck with me and I don't like it too much anymore.
18. Lowkey - Fire in The Booth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhrYQrLBiTQ
This is a new one for me. Lowkey kills it with his "Fire in The Booth". I listened to this recently but it took a few listens to really start liking it but once I did start to enjoy it, my love for it grew. Lowkey is currently one of my favourite artists and I am currently listening to a lot of his music and discovering more and more.
Fire in The Booth is a series of live, freesyle hip-hop broadcasts that air late on Radio 1Xtra in the UK.
17. Pendulum - Propane Nightmares
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPbeEtjo70g
You may think that this is an odd addition. It is however (probably) here for more nostalgic reasons. I do still like this a lot though, there is just something about it that has always interested me.
16. Mr. Hudson - Forever Young
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbkojVCo0GY
You may ask - "Why not Alphaville?". Well, prefer this version =). I have liked this song for a fairly long time now and occasionally play it. This often creates many feels aha. This song can really hit me sometimes.
15. Plan B - Playing With Fire
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6Xe3CMzMIw
This is the song that got me into British Hip-Hop and was the starting point for me delving deeper into the world of meaningful Hip-Hop and later, Grime.
Even though some of the power that this song held for me in past has been lost it still holds a place in my heart. I would have said that this was my favourite song at one point and Plan B my favourite artist but times have changed.
Wow I'm a huge influence. :D
Rep for Propane Nightmares and Another Brick in the Wall.

Hi Rhys not seen you around for a bit. Hope all is going well. Have a good summer hols!
My youngest son was always into hip hop and specially British hip hop and grime, it was always playing around the house. I remember buying him a couple of mix tapes called Key to The Game in the early 2000s from a very young Lowkey from an obscure website. I've just looked at the music on my phone cos I still listen to that sometimes, I've got Key to the Game vol 2 Still Underground. It's great, you should see if you can find it. I like Plan B too.

Great! I will see if I can find it on YouTube and give it a listen. Thank you.
I'm doing great thank you. I've been on and posted, but only very little. I've just been a little busy recently. :)
14. Muse - Time is Running Out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2IuJPh6h_A
This is a song that has stuck with me ever since learning it on guitar (not the solo, but a simplified version of the majority of the rest of the song). I learnt this as part as my past school's "Guitar Club" to play in front of an audience for an event I cannot quite remember. I played with the guitar club many times for many events, but mainly for the Christmas concert. This all brings back great memories even if I am not the greatest at playing guitar.
13. Simon and Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zLfCnGVeL4
I have really liked this song for a long time, from a young age when I was introduced to it and the artists by my step-dad. More recently, I have grown a deeper adoration for the song and Simon and Garfunkel due to my interest in the film "The Graduate".
12. Akala - Who's the Gangster
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae_6lCJ2HEc
Akala is still new to me. However, I have found a great interest in his music and I am constantly listening to him on Spotify. His music is very meaningful and he has inspired me to read more into the history of the world and into ideologies and theory. There will more Akala additions to this list.
I heard about Akala though a university friend who invited me to go to a talk on "Race, Class and Imperialism" with Akala doing the talk. I went without knowing about his music and became quite interested. I wish I went to the gig that night but I felt I had to get on with my university work.
11. Plan B - Couldn't Get Along
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgC0uRxYwl4
I have liked this song ever since I really got into Plan B and listened to his album "Who Needs Actions When You Got Words". It took me a little while to start liking the album due to it's big differentiation to "iLL Manors" but when I did start liking it I found that I actually preferred it.
10. 2Pac - Ghetto Gospel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do5MMmEygsY
This one takes me back a long way too. As a child I had been on and off rap but always been interested in the origins and culture of the genre. 2Pac has been a favourite of mine ever since a young age. Ghetto Gospel is, for me, one his most powerful songs.
9. Dead Prez - Hip-Hop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jNyr6BJZuI
Here is a bit of old school hip-hop. The bass line is fantastic and there is just something about the song as a whole that for me just clicks.

The Sound of Silence is so beautiful. I've known the song years before I watched The Graduate.
8. Dead Prez - Ill mind of Hopsin 6
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vuv2mvfO_mg
This is my favorite of Hopsin's songs and although I don't listen to the artist much anymore I often still come back to listening to this fantastic song. This is a great piece about his friend and the damage that illegal drugs, or more specifically hard drugs, can do.

I'm glad you think so because I agree. I knew the song before watching "The Graduate" too, but the film managed to made it even greater!
7. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Under The Bridge
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwlogyj7nFE
What can I say? This song grabs me from the get go with the fantastic instrumental and never lets go throughout. It is definitely one of those songs that I could quite easily watch on a loop!
6. Eminem - Mockingbird
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9bCLPwzSC0
This song means a lot to me for more personal reasons. I find myself coming back to this from time to time and it tends to manage to evoke some fairly strong emotions from me. I used to sing along/rap along to this a lot when I was younger too and managed to know the words off my heart. I liked that I could keep up with Eminem too (even though it's definitely one of his slower songs). However I cannot sing (nor rap) too well.
Fabulous

I hope number one is NOT Rebecca Black - Friday.
5. Akala - Find No Enemy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjvUMr1-AAU
This is a very powerful and moving song and I personally believe it is one of Akala's best. This is another song that is still new to me but I could still quite easy listen to this on repeat. I would recommend you give this a listen even if you don't like rap because it is an easy one to follow and it is definitely worth listening to!
4. Neil Young - Old Man
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An2a1_Do_fc
This song is a old favourite of mine. This another that my step-dad introduced me to. I find this song to be very beautiful and imagine that this may become even more powerful (for me personally) later on in my life.
3. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPL_SV3n7IU
I found this song recently (believe it or not!). I found it from watching Boyhood. I adore this song and it is once again one that I could quite easily watch on a loop. This song has one of the most memorable lines of any for me.

I'm coming to the conclusion that your step dad has great taste! Ask him if he likes the excellent live version of Southern Man of CSNY's live 4 Way Street :)

Will do! (and he does haha!)
2. 2Pac - Changes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nay31hvEvrY
I feel that there is not too much to say about this one. Changes is my favourite 2Pac song and it is still relevant today.
RIP TUPAC SHAKUR.

Just to let you guys know, you more than likely will not have heard of the song that takes the number 1 slot. It is a very new addition and is only my current favorite song. It is more than likely to be overtaken within the next year as I am always finish new songs and/or going back to old ones. The song is very meaningful and powerful (in my opinion) and I would highly recommend giving it a listen.

Post the number one song already!
1. Akala - Fire in the Booth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEOKgjoxoto
Please just listen to it. If you want to know what Akala is all about then this is the song to start with. He talks about a number of issues briefly in this song in which he separates in others to a greater depth. This is just a fantastic piece and to think this version in particular is done live on the radio seemingly flawlessly is just incredible.

Sorry to disappoint.
I like it. Hating on rap is getting seriously old.
