Welcome to Gatsby's music list! I asked a few MoFos if they wanted a music related top list from me, and most were enthusiastic about it. Ever since I started joining Song Tournaments I've always wanted to pimp my tastes to others, and now my chance has come (hopefully). :p

About the weird title. I started making a Top 50 list, but I hate ranking stuff, so I failed miserably. I also faced the problem of completing a list, then forgetting a few good song, resulting in a huge re-arrangement - quite a frequent nuisance. So I decided to post 40 songs I just love, and the rest of the 10 will be an actual Top 10. This is how it will work:

- This thread will consist of 10 sets of 5, a total of 50 songs. In each set there will be 4 songs, unranked, and the last fifth song will be my #10, then the next set will have #9, then #8, and so on.

- Each song will consist of a medium-length write up, a music video or lyric video if I can't find a music video.

- I will also have a video of a drum cover for the song, because I'm a drummer and drum covers are awesome, especially if they are "covering" songs I adore.

Hope everyone enjoys this thread! Questions and complaints via PM please.

The Who - Join Together

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HDMCCLlGl4

Even though the popularity has risen, this song, like many other The Who songs, is underrated. Join Together is really catchy, easy to dance with, and the harmonica sounds are great, used to introduce people into a world of eclectic young spirit.

White Stripes - Hotel Yorba

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZPEUyiNcjA

White Stripes just the way I like it. It has the great unique of Jack White with a simple, yet easy-going melody that you can't help but enjoy. And the chemistry between the two in the video is awesome.

The Notorious B.I.G - Juicy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JZom_gVfuw

I know this song is played over and over again, being such a memorable rap song and a huge influence, but it means it's really great, and it is. It's the kind of rap I like, with no annoying gangsta lovin' crap artists yaking about crack and hot women.

Deep Purple - Fireball

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q88koeaqrEg

I usually don't listen to speed metal, but when I do, it's most of the time a classic Deep Purple song. Their songs are full of unmatchable energy, and if it has a good drum beat, then that's Fireball.

10. Warren Zevon - Lawyers, Guns, and Money

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGhd53hV0Z0

The first official Top 10 from my list. This is my favorite Warren Zevon song that has everything I love about him. The lyrics are darkly amusing and vocals are a killer. My favorite used to be Werewolves of London, but I realized that his more under-appreciated ones are true gems.

Well, I knew you had a watchlist, but a listenlist is something entirely new to me. Maybe I should make one, but I want my life to be a bit easier. Glad you liked 3/5 songs from the list, and hell, the rest are one you haven't even heard yet, So I guess this is sweet victory.

Oh sh*t, I totally forgot about the drum covers last time, from now on I'll be sure to add them... whether you like 'em or not.:p:

Van Halen - Hot for Teacher

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M4_Ommfvv0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFzNdj-_iME

This song and video pretty much sums up the 80s. If released today Van Halen's masterpiece would be banned within hours, because these days people don't allow smoking hot teacher in bikinis and "attempted" child molestation. They also probably wouldn't know how awesome the opening drum solo is and the guitar solo in the library table.

George Michael - Faith

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu3VTngm1F0

Whenever I listen to this song I automatically catch the rhythm and bob my head, and it usually doesn't leave my head for the rest of the day. Also those ass close-ups are magnificent.

Reach Out I'll be There - Four Tops

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SpkOcbVYS0

Great cheer-up song that always puts me in a better mood than five minutes ago. It's like comfort food, nothing that special about it but it's definitely a favorite.

Edgar Winter Group - Frankenstein

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1mV_5-bRPo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI9cxp5VTz8

One of my favorite instrumental rock songs that goes from an average level of insanity into a head explosion inducing madness. I immensely enjoy playing this song on the drums.

9. People are Strange

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRAr354usf8

This song was a hit with me when the lyrics were extremely relatable back in High School, my dark years. (now luckily not so much, but it's been a year without a girl so the lonely feels are starting to kick in again :p). My favorite The Doors song, and I'm not even a fan of them.

Two songs on this list that remind me of my childhood.

"Hot for Teacher" for my brothers (I haven't heard this one in years).

"Faith" for my mother. She loved this song. Or maybe it was just the video. :D

Months ago you wouldn't have given me rep. You're finally starting to warm up to me. :p

What George Michael and The Doors song would have picked?

Miss Vicky
07-18-15, 03:00 AM
Both would depend on my mood at that instant.

For George Michael: "Too Funky," "Careless Whisper," or the Elton John duet "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me"
For The Doors: "Love Her Madly," "Break On Through" or "Riders on the Storm"

Break oOn Through is great, for how often you hear it it isn't usually cited as one of The Doors best.

Sometimes I feel like you two are polar opposites.

We are pretty dissimilar, which is probably why we get along. If she was a bitch like me we might be at each other's throats all the time. I don't think we've ever gotten into a bad argument (lots of debates, but no verbal fights) in all the years we've known each other.

Surprised you didn't like it. I wasn't alive in the 80s but when I picture it it is the first 20minutes of The Lost Boys. The rest is just cheesy fun, and the best Kiefer Sutherland has ever been. Yes I've seen 24, long haired cheesy vampire Kierfer > Solid Snake Kiefer!

But I don't think I ever watched Lost Boys back then.

KC & The Sunshine Band - Give it Up

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psFQMKcsIF8

Addictive tune and a great message (give it up! :p), I'm one of the view people who knew about the song before Kingsman: the Secret Service was released, when I heard the song being used to highlight the sheer ridiculousness of heads blowing up, I knew I just saw a great film.

Beautiful Child - Fleetwood Mac

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeREyEVBhHU

Really underrated song by FM, I guess because it's a bit too quiet and get boring during the relatively long 5 and a half minutes, but the great lyrics and vocals make up for it. Great song.

Nirvana - In Bloom

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbgKEjNBHqM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lw1uj3hgIk

The first song I enjoyed the now overrated Smells Like Teen Spirit (for me), and sits at my 3rd fav overall Nirvana song. I love the subtle rebellious melody and lyrics, drum fills, and Kurt Cobain's badass voice.

Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zLfCnGVeL4

Don't have much words for this one. Amazing lyrics and harmony between the two.

8. When the Levee Breaks

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NaQZojWi6U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kYDAuu6qj4

My favorite Led Zeppelin. The drum beat and sound. Is. F*cking. Awesome. Not only that, the song has a great sense of deep, low-pitched melancholy to it that I can't help but love.

Miss Vicky
07-18-15, 04:51 AM
Now you know you're gonna get rep from me when you post Fleetwood Mac, though as much as I love that song and that album, I'd be happier with a Lindsey Buckingham song than a Stevie Nicks one.

Also +rep for Nirvana and Led Zep, though again not the songs I would have chosen.

Camo

Nah, I'm not a big Stones fan, tbh, and don't have any of their albums. I do hope that one of your RS songs will be "Gimme Shelter," though. Hands down their best song, IMO.

I won a song tournament with it, too.

Also, being a double album, Tusk isn't exactly brief.

I like Start Me Up, but it isn't one of my favorite The Rolling Stones songs, but I enjoy the mix of various sounds and sub-genres.

About the version you posted - wow that's hilarious. I think I just received a cultural shock, I don't think I've heard folk rap before. :D. I knew about the existence of The Folksman but I had never heard one of their parodies before. Thanks MV.

Miss Vicky

The Folksmen are the same guys as Spinal Tap. That song is from the soundtrack to the movie A Mighty Wind. I highly recommend both the movie and the soundtrack.

Also, I'm not crazy about the Stones' "Start Me Up," but love that version.

I don't care for This is Spinal Tap, either. But I'm a fan of The Kingston Trio. The Folksmen are based at least in part on them.

And yeah, it's nearly 2:00 a.m. and I have to be at work at 8:00 a.m. I'm not sleepy though. I think I need to pop some Bendryl or something.

I know this is a jokish post, but I absolutely hate Gangnam Style. It's annoying, not funny, and reduces Psy into some weird fatso Asian when he is actually a fantastic artist and a great rapper, he created a revolution in my country with his direct, controversial lyrics (at that time) and hyperactive, eccentric beat. I'd rather put a Justin Bieber song on my list, you seem to desperately want him anyways. :D

Elvis Presley - Viva Las Vegas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJps6O86GQI

Classy Presley song, has everything you would expect, calm but powerful low voice and a great amount of energy, I love Rock songs but I wish there were more songs like this one.

Subdivisions - Rush

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYYdQB0mkEU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx3bQD90r8U

Sadly this song pretty much sums up my school life. Also Rush is my favorite band and Neil Pearth is my favorite drummer so you'll be seeing a lot of songs from them from now on. Saving the best for last. :D

Earth, Wind and Fire - Boogie Wonderland

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=god7hAPv8f0

If you can't dance to this song you're not human.

The Rolling Stones - Jumpin' Jack Flash

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQSGw0hMd_I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESixZtdWPwY

Near perfect song. Lyrics are always a strong point of the Stones and the lyrics of Jumpin' Jack Fish is one of my favorite.

7. Free Bird

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0W1v0kOELA&list=PL57iXsZuakd9LxvcJsxKoPW6Xm2rHtSaU&index=5

No, this song is not all about the long guitar solo and it is not overrated. I love how it starts out quietly and precise, then suddenly explodes and keeps on rockin'; amazing build up. My fav from Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Ozzy Osbourne - Goodbye to Romance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWyZjD8b-ZE

Osbourne is awesome when he gets a bit soft. The moderate tempo and the nice guitar sounds back a rough but surprisingly tender voice.

Pixies - Where is my mind

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFAnn2j4iB0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2Ph2ZFnwD4

Loved this song when first heard it during my first viewing of Fight Club, years ago, and today it still remains as a favorite.

"You're not your job
You're not how much money you have in the bank
You're not the car you drive
You're not the contents of your wallet
You're not the ****ing khakis
You're the all singing, all dancing crap of the world"

Queens - Another One Bites the Dust

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0WxgSXdEE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmj8GbeoB2M

If you ever perform CPR, remember that the beat of this song is perfect for reminding yourself how many pumps per minute you have to do. I predict MV will storm in and say, "You should have picked a better Queens song (Bohemian Rhapsody I assume)". :D

Michael Jackson - Billie Jean

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zi_XLOBDo_Y

Best Michael Jackson.

6. Bjork - Hyperballad

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26sP2WsA5cY

This pick is gonna rattle some marbles. Even though my taste is pretty pop and rock centered I find Bjork's songs to be beautiful, ominous, and dreamy, her videos are great too.

Big +rep for "Billie Jean," probably my favorite MJ song.

The Who - Love Reign Over Me

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDbAtWpoA6k

Just randomly chose one song about of every single The Who song I love, but I also chose this one it's very nice despite low recognition.

The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJDnJ0vXUgw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj0-HtMqROc

The iconic Stones songs still remains awesome and holy no matter how many times it is played. Some songs just never get old, they just get younger and younger.

Toto - Africa

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTQbiNvZqaY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWKCaexX_uk

New favorite for me. Did not know a thing about "Toto" until months ago, and I started really digging most of their songs. Africa is one of them.

The Kinks - Lola

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LemG0cvc4oU

I love a song when it tells a story, Lola nails it. The lyrics are quite funny if you pay close attention and is somewhat a simple unlikely love song.

5. Estranged

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpmAY059TTY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a61vLLZSB5Y

My favorite GNR song, which is a band that has generated so many favorites. Like CS, I used to listen to the song as a mean of comfort and escape from loneliness. I can't believe this wasn't added to the Greatest Hits album.

Major reps for the lists you've been laying down, Gatsby!

First off, a big YES! for Meytal Cohen. I was never a fan of Nirvana but it was nice to see her beating the skins on anything because she's so beautiful...oh, and talented, too!

Simon and Garfunkel---The Sound of Silence---love it, along with most of their catalog.
Led Zeppelin---When the Levee Breaks, one of their best songs, ever, and one of the best songs ever! Of course, the drums are epic, and I really love the blues harp by Plant.
Elvis Presley---Viva Las Vegas---one of his classics and I just happened to watch the movie again the other night....mostly for the song AND Ann-Margret. :randy:
Earth Wind and Fire---Boogie Wonderland---love this song and practically everything they've done. In fact, I have their massive boxed set, one of the few I've ever purchased.
Jumpin' Jack Flash & Gimme Shelter--The Rolling Stones---love the Stones and these are two of their staples that I like. Love the Let It Bleed album.
Lynyrd Skynyrd---Free Bird----yes, one of the greatest songs ever, but boy, did I get sick of it. I might give a listen now, as it's been a few years.
Queen---Another One Bites the Dust---another classic and Freddy Mercury had one of the best voices ever. I wish they would quit trying to insert Adam Lambert into the group. He's an awesome singer but there was only one Freddy and he's gone, so let it go, Queen members.
Michael Jackson---Billie Jean---great stuff and Thriller is one of my favorite songs/videos ever, especially with my man Vincent Price doing his "rap."
The Who---Love Reign O'er Me---one of their best songs ever, and Roger sings his guts out on this one. Classic!
Toto---Africa---I have a high school friend who is still ridiculed for liking Toto even after all these decades. I'm on his side. Great song.
The Kinks---Lola---One of their best. Good groove and hilarious lyrics.

Yes, finally someone who comments on the epicness of the drums! John Bonham is badass. :highfive:
Lynyrd Skynyrd---Free Bird----yes, one of the greatest songs ever, but boy, did I get sick of it. I might give a listen now, as it's been a few years.
Sick of Free Bird? Unheard of! You must have listened it 100 times every day for the last 10 years! :p
Toto---Africa---I have a high school friend who is still ridiculed for liking Toto even after all these decades. I'm on his side. Great song.
Shame, I don't get why people treat Toto very lightly and shallow. Hope those imbeciles who tease your friends learn a lesson later on.

Jude - King of Yesterday

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmE7mcEUxFw

Madonna - Material Girl

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNSUOFgj97M

For this list I decided to go with a lot of under-appreciated songs, and Material Girl is one of them. Just as good as a lot of her popular songs.

Bon Jovi - Livin' On a Prayer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDK9QqIzhwk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfKVqGoq9rI

Absolute classic. The song creatively combines electric sounds with soft-core rock to create harmony.

Culture Club - Karma Chameleon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmcA9LIIXWw

Guility pleasure for me. I know it's kinda corny and the video even has racist undertones, but everything else is good. Don't get the hate directed at Culture Club.

4. Boston - Peace of Mind

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGRrOEbY3pI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gkv3eGhCuAg

My wish is in right in this song - the entire world is in competition, all I want is a peace of mind. These laid-back lyrics is what makes Boston a fav band of mine.

Miss Vicky

Not crazy about this set, tbh.

My mother tells me that I loved "Material Girl" when I was little and would walk around singing it and even made up a little dance. I don't recall this, but I'm pretty sure if it's true I had no idea WTF the song was about. I probably thought it had something to do with fabric. I do like some of Madonna's other work though. "Like A Prayer" is my favorite.

Except for "Wanted Dead or Alive" I can't stand Bon Jovi.

I like "Karma Chameleon" well enough, but if I were to choose a favorite from Boy George's resume it would be "The Crying Game."

Boston's always been one of those bands that are pleasant enough to hear on the radio, but I've never had any desire to add their work to my collection.

When it comes to "classic rock" on my local radio station, Free Bird is practically the only Skynyrd song that they played for nigh on two decades, almost every day. I don't care how great the song is, I don't want to hear it every day...I'd like to hear some of their other songs for a change. So, that was right around the time that I started buying CDs so I could hear what I wanted. But, like I said, I'm at the stage where I can handle Free Bird again.

But it's sad when you've got a radio station (I don't have satellite radio) where, when they say a certain artist is coming up, you can guess which song (within two) by that artist they're going to play. And almost without fail, I guess right. If they announce Bob Seger, they play either Old Time Rock and Roll or Hollywood Nights. I love them both, but Seger has a huge catalog of great songs they could choose from. More examples:

Fleetwood Mac: either Dreams or Go Your Own Way
Boston: almost always More Than a Feeling, and the rest of the time, Don't Look Back
The Rolling Stones: Start Me Up is the main one, sometimes Honky Tonk Women
Ted Nugent: Stranglehold and that's it
Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody, and occasionally You're My Best Friend

Anyway, you get the picture. I love these songs but I'd like to hear some deep cuts or even some other hits by these bands/artists. That's why I keep my DVD case with me in the car.

Pink Floyd - Brain Damage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnExahMPPFI

Swan's theme song is awesome. :p

Guns 'N' Roses - Welcome to the Jungle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1tj2zJ2Wvg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-_Qk_hxtuU

I really like GNR, and one of the main reasons is how they handle heavy metal - a sub genre of rock I honestly do not dig. They don't just mindlessly scream while banging their heads, there is a mix of classic rock, great lyrics and even cowbell.

The Beatles - I Wanna Hold Your Hand

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipADNlW7yBM

Personally I consider The Beatles to be an influential, but overrated (The Godfather anyone? ;)), but you can't help but love this song. No wonder so many teen girls went crazy. This song brings out my inner madly-in-love girly spirit.

James Brown - Funky Drummer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNP8tbDMZNE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybqU2Uma97A

As a drummer it is impossible to not like this song.

3. Rush - Time Stand Still

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGsQ5n9Qu0A
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uF7J6lu_rW8

The best song from the most underrated band of all-time. Most have either not heard of Rush or hate them. I don't get it. In Time Stand Still, Rush creates an amazing electronic + energetic/subtly progressive rock sound, supported by a great featuring by the beautiful Aimee Mann.

+rep for Welcome to the Jungle and Brain Damage.

I grew up listening to GNR and Welcome to the Jungle was always a favorite. I Want to Hold Your Hand has long been a least favorite from The Beatles, but I've never been much of a fan of theirs anyway.

I'd not heard the James Brown or Rush songs before. They're okay.

Rush was always one of those bands that I liked well enough when they came on the radio, but I never explored any of their work beyond that. I also haven't really listened to the radio in many years and couldn't tell you when I last heard Rush.

Joan Jett - New Orleans

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVvchLlzehs

I like Joan Jett in general, but quite often her musical style gets a bit too predictable and repetitive, but New Orleans is extremely addictive and has subtle Southern soul/folk elements to create greatness.

Oscar Peterson - The Girl From Ipanema

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeDjbJMb1yw

Classic instrumental jazz at it's best, Peterson's songs are great to listen to while studying. Almost nominated this one for the Instrumental Song Tournament.

Warren Zevon - Splendid Isolation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awhGI0_o90s

Warren Zevon! Nuff said.

Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJkmHQ2q--I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyFYDZIAKFw
This is why I love progressive rock so much. The sub-genre elevates rock from simple enjoyment into a level of genius.

2. The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHhrZgojY1Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOzIVBTAGqg

The Who is my favorite band of all-time, Won't Get Fooled Again is my favorite from them, and the album Who's Next is one I revere and consider to be a masterpiece.

Why I love this song so much:

- The lyrics. Funny, accurate, clever, and strikingly realistic, in a way it kinda predicted the future
- Keith Moon's career height, his drumming is just insane
- 2 minute instrumental part gives me ear-gasms
- Amazing vocals, guitar, and especially the bass sound
- It's the theme song for my favorite CSI series

So actually Won't Get Fooled Again should be my #1 pick, but I wanted to spice up things with a relatively new favorite song. And that pick should rattle some marbles (hopefully).

The Yardbirds - Shapes of Things

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc17DqcA6Qc

60s rock music can make you cringe, but when it's good, it's really good. Shapes of Things is full of energy and has an old analog vibe to it - cool tune.

Sweet - Ballroom Blitz

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzpWJx3I2DY

Toto - I'll Be Over You

Don't have much to say about this song it's just... incredibly soothing.

U2 - Mysterious Ways

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxcDTUMLQJI

Really cool song and great music video that matches the level of the song itself. One of the view U2 songs that I like, but it might be because I haven't heard a lot of their song before. That will change.

1. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7EpSirtf_E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaWwuAzW4ps

First off, I want to say that this was not originally supposed to be my #1, or even be part of my ranked list.

But then I remembered Swan's director list and how he filled it mostly with directors that had potential to become a favorite - and that's when I made my decision.

Now back to the song. Pink Floyd's masterpiece is flawless. Absolutely flawless. The lyrics are painful but touching and dreamy, and the melody has an enlightening atmosphere to it. No matter how many times I mash the replay button, is always feels like the first time I met this song.

Miss Vicky
