View Full Version : MoFo Turns 15; Knows Everything
Yes, today is the site's birthday. On July 14th, 2000, the site officially launched. Which means it's been online for 15 years, which as you probably realize is a really high number for a website, and a really really absurdly high number for a forum.
As always, I want to thank all of you for being a part of this--the biggest part, as it so happens. As much as I have building stuff for you guys to use, how you use it (and how you invent new traditions and games and tournaments of your own) is always the fun part.
In honor of the 15th birthday, and as the title indicates, a small thank you: for today (and maybe a little longer), you can know everything. Meaning you can ask me all sorts of random questions about various site statistics and I'll do my best to answer. For example, you can ask me exactly how many times you've used a particular phrase, or how many posts of yours contain a specific smilie, or what the single longest review on the site is, etc.
I'm sure a handful will involve too much work to answer, but if it's not too extreme, I'll do it.

What's the deal with airline food?
How many posts exist on the site altogether, and how many threads?
As of just now (but probably already out of date), there are 1,345,962 posts and 38,368 threads.
This includes all threads or posts that have been moved off the public board, as well as any that were "soft" deleted (which is most of the deletions). It doesn't include the ones that were totally removed (which is generally what happens to bulk spam).
What's the deal with airline food?
It's mediocre because of the preservatives and the environment in which it's consumed.

One, if that road is Become a Man Blvd.
If it's not, then seven.

Once you MoFo, you can't StoFo.
How long have you been practicing VooDoo? (How else do you explain your team in fantasy baseball being in first?)
What was my first post on the site?
who was the 2nd person to register?
A guy named wsresource (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=2). He was a guy I knew from a web development community where we were both members/learning how to make websites.

Congratulations on the longevity of the forum! I love this place!
How many people are registered here?
How many of those people are regular users?
- In total, how many times were avatars changed?

These might be too intensive to measure. But I might be able to do the first with a few minutes' work. Let me get back to this one.
- How many bad jokes have been made so far?
http://www.families.com/wp-content/uploads/media/infinity_symbol1.jpg
- Does SC spam posts count as actual posts?
Yup. Way back in the day we discussed excluding certain forums from post counts, but decided against it.

Nah.
How long have you been practicing VooDoo? (How else do you explain your team in fantasy baseball being in first?)
Funny story, I actually just thought making little dolls of my enemies and stabbing them would be therapeutic. It was only later I found out this was magic. What a co-ink-ee-dink!
What was my first post on the site?
Here it is (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=122419#post122419).
How many people are registered here?
Well, total users are 50,340. 42,177 are in the Registered group, but there thousands in the BANNED group and obviously a handful in the admin/mod groups.
How many of those people are regular users?
You'd have to define "regular users." Though most of the definitions you'd choose would be pretty hard to track. But if you have a few in mind I can tell you if any of them are feasible.
If you define it as people who've literally logged in today, it's usually about 150. But we have quite a few who log in just a little less frequently than that.
The Rodent

There's between 100 and 150 "regular" MoFos with around 80-100 of those being daily/hourly posters. I started the post counts so can answer that one for you.

Uh, what? Do I even grammar?
Okay, if I wasn't second to register, how close was I? Because I know I was in the first month-ish after you went live.
You were 27th.
Everyone can find out what order they registered by going to their profile and looking at the number in the URL. It's not perfect because lots of spam bots have been deleted and whatnot, but it gives you a general idea.
And what fortunate soul posted that 1,000,000th post? Did he or she get a prize?
It was me, actually. I noticed it as coming up and stole the glory.

You'd have to define "regular users."
I would call regular users people who log in at least once a week and are active in things. It doesn't really matter I guess if that is too big of a pain in the ass to figure out. LOL!
I know that I wasn't any where near being here when you started but, how many people have registered since I joined?
what was the 1st movie reviewed on mofo?
Depends on what you count as a review. We tag reviews, for example. But the very first thread in site history was about Mission: Impossible II (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=1), and people talk about what they thought, so if your definition is expansive enough, the first thread and the first review would be one and the same.
What movie has been mentioned the most?
Don't have any way to track that. I could, however, tell you how often a specific title has shown up in all posts.

Heh, yeah, sorry. But the 150-ish per day probably gives you a rough idea.
I know that I wasn't any where near being here when you started but, how many people have registered since I joined?
You joined August 30th, 2012. So about 14,400. Which is exactly ten times the number of minutes in a day (working with timestamps teaches you things like this).
BTW, what sorts of people were numbers 3-26 then? :)
Don't think you'd recognize any, though in the 30s I believe we get into OG- and thmilin.
You can bring up any by just changing the number in the URL, though:

Happy Birthday MoFo and congrats Yoda!
What was the single most active day MoFo ever had?
What was the first ever post? I'm guessing it was by you but what did it say exactly?
What was the first ever movie that was discussed?
Just cuz I'm feeling lazy, what was been my most rep'ed post so far?
What was the single most active day MoFo ever had?
You'll get different answers depending on how you measure activity (visits, pageviews, posts, threads, logins, whatever). But if you go by posts, it was quite recent: May 18th, 2015. Before that it was September 23rd, 2014. And before that it was September 12th, 2014.
If you go by visits, it was definitely Simon Pegg Day. That's the day Simon Pegg linked to us on Twitter:
https://twitter.com/simonpegg/status/28975536762
What was the first ever post? I'm guessing it was by you but what did it say exactly?

Both are answered via the link above: it was a post/thread about Mission: Impossible II (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1#post1), since that's what I'd most recently seen when I started the site.
Just cuz I'm feeling lazy, what was been my most rep'ed post so far?

Congrats on making another year, Yoda. :) It's needless to say (so I'll say it anyway) but this is my home from home on the net.
So, questions.... Umm... How many times have I mentioned Drew Barrymore? How many times has my username been linked to Drew Barrymore? Why isn't the HK 100 an official MoFo list? :D
Don't have any way to track that. I could, however, tell you how often a specific title has shown up in all posts.
Can you find out what movie shows up among favorite movies in members profiles the most?
Back when we had negative rep, Holden was number one in both positive AND negative rep at one point in time.
So, questions.... Umm... How many times have I mentioned Drew Barrymore?
"Barrymore" = 361 times.
"Drew Barrymore" = 199 times.
"Drew" = 724 times.
How many times has my username been linked to Drew Barrymore?
Posts containing both "drew" and "honeykid" = 349.
Why isn't the HK 100 an official MoFo list? :D
Because of the awfulness.
Can you find out what movie shows up among favorite movies in members profiles the most?
Yes! In fact, I can answer a whole lot of questions about movies and favorites and stuff, because I've got that all linked up to a centralized system since the relaunch.
The most listed is Pulp Fiction, which is listed by 309 active users (http://www.movieforums.com/community/favoritesearch.php?movieid=680). Second place is The Godfather, listed by 231 (http://www.movieforums.com/community/favoritesearch.php?movieid=238).

MoFo Yoda story time
http://oi60.tinypic.com/33xj6ki.jpg
Ready are you? What know you ready? For 800 years have i trained MoFos, my own council i will keep on who is to be trained !
http://oi57.tinypic.com/2yu1211.jpg
For my ally is the Arthouse, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us, and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Arthouse around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes
http://oi59.tinypic.com/wbqa2x.jpg
Yes, a MoFo's strength flows from the Arthouse. But beware of the Mainstream. Anger, fear, aggression; the Mainstream of the MoFo are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the Mainstream path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will!
Is the Mainstream stronger?
No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.
But how am I to know the Arthouse from the Mainstream?
You will know... when you are calm, at peace, passive. A MoFo uses the Arthouse for knowledge and defense, NEVER for attack.
But tell my why I can't...
No, no! There is no "why"
http://oi59.tinypic.com/3161dv6.jpg
But i can help them! I feel the arthouse!
But you cannot control it. This is a dangerous time for you, when you will be tempted by the Mainstream of the MoFo
i'd bet either Pulp Fiction or Taxi Driver
Pulp Fiction has been mentioned in 6,339 posts.
Taxi Driver has been mentioned in 5,061.
Note: this includes deleted posts, and the totals include the entire title, so shorthand or misspellings are not included, nor are oblique references, obviously.

I guess more of a personal question, but what "era" of this site has been your favorite? Like the site's inception, a particular year, right now etc.
This is going to sound like a cop out, but it's the truth: I like (and yes, dislike) different things about different time periods.
Years 2-3 were fun because the site was active for the first time, and I was adding tons of features. Everyone was pretty friendly (though everyone being so close-knit meant that, when there was drama, it was a bigger deal).
By contrast, I'd say the site is less friendly today, but it's also more active, has a wider range of opinions, and has way more (and more in-depth) reviews. The community is generally more self-sufficient, and dust-ups are more short-lived.
So, there are always trade offs, and I need a little distance from any era to form a clear opinion about it. But I will say that I think last year's relaunch was way up there. Everyone dug all the new stuff, so we had a nice mix of congeniality and activity, when there's usually a bit of a push-pull between those two.

Why "TWTCommish"?
TWT = The Warning Track, the name of a baseball newsletter I ran (and my first ever website, though it went through a name change at one point). Commish as in Commissioner, because baseball has a Commissioner and I thought it was fun/clever to use that title instead of "owner."
I'm curious what my most used non-trivial word is

How prevalent is multiply accounts for MoFos to have? (in percentage terms).
I couldn't tell you; we have to check case-by-case. But since we only allow it here and there for joke purposes, it's extremely small, even though people joke about alts a lot. You probably don't have to worry about anyone you interact with even semi-regularly actually being someone else, for example.

I know there are features such as the A-Z Members list, that doesn't have a link on MoFo's site. Is there a Site Map or list of these other pages?
We don't, no. I'm not really against the idea, though they seem to have fallen out of style, as they can be a little redundant (and therefore one more thing to keep track of). I suppose one might become necessary if we want to add a handful of extra sub-pages and don't have anywhere to link them from, though if that happens I'll probably just rethink the navigation a little.
Just out of interest have you ever had cause in all that time to have to remind young Austruck just who's site it is?
You mean like admonish her for rulebreaking? If so, no, I don't think so!

Oh wow - three minutes? I saw the post pop up on the recent activity and I was on that thing in seconds! But maybe it had been up for a bit longer and I just didn't see it!
Could be. I also could be wrong--I've never had to look the time up manually with that particular system, so I might have looked at the wrong thing. If you're pretty sure it was quicker I'll be glad to take a closer look.
Nah - no biggie!

This is another I can answer... my Star Trek review. I had to split it into 2 posts.

Yup. Way back in the day we discussed excluding certain forums from post counts, but decided against it.
Are you sure you don't want to talk about that again?!? :|
How many avatars did I make for Martian Leader, and why didn't you ever stop me? :p
I could, however, tell you how often a specific title has shown up in all posts.
Which movie has been asked about more times than any, in the Movie Questions forum?
I know the answer to this. :)
The tracker I built actually doesn't tap into that ban tool the way the other method does. But looking it up manually (assuming I'm looking at the right thing), I think it ended up taking about 3 minutes. So your high scores (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=393263#post393263) are unchanged, for now.
What about mine, please?
Also, how many people have I banned?
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Since you asked it yourself, I'm curious what is the longest review ever written on here (I bet JayDee's Avengers review)? ;)
Yup, that's the one (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1297204#post1297204). It's around 4,800 words. His Jurassic Park review (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1208570#post1208570) is only a couple hundred behind, though.
Since I used to spell 'definitely' defiantly, I wonder how many times I used the latter and thereby failed at gramma
"Defiantly" has appeared in your posts 78 times (including this one). However, that is a word, so I'm not sure how many of those were misspellings.
What is my longest post not counting reviews
I assume you mean excluding your film diary review collections, too (even though those aren't tagged as reviews because they're collections of reviews). If so, it's this one (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1321891#post1321891), at about 2,300 words.
and what is my longest post when counting reviews?
If you count film diary review collections, it's this one (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1283615#post1283615), which is 3,200 words. Among single reviews, it's the 3,300+ words in your Age of Ultron review (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1335553#post1335553)
Who was the first to do an official tagged review and which was it?
Well, we introduced a rudimentary version of the tagging system forever ago, but we used it to tag reviews that were older than the system, obviously, so it depends on whether or not you're asking about the first we tagged or the first posted that was eventually tagged.
For the latter, just go to Reviews -> View All (http://www.movieforums.com/reviews/search/any/higher) and you can browse every last one of them. And when you do, you'll find that the oldest tagged review is this review of Training Day by Holden Pike (http://www.movieforums.com/reviews/18529-training-day.html) from wayyyyy back in 2001.
Who has the highest post count on the forum?
honeykid, with a little under 55,000.
Here is a little to play with, I don't want to overstuff you! :D Congrats to you and MoFo once again btw!
Thank you! :) Thanks for being part of it.
How many times hv I used the word "so" on all my threads?
375.
What's the word I use the most?
Couple people have asked things like this earlier in the thread, and sadly, it's not something I can easily track.
Who is The Duchess a clone from?
Nobody. I know a lot of people think The Duchess is an alt, but there's no evidence of it.
How many posts have you deleted, not counting spam?
Unfortunately I don't have a way to exclude spam deletions from other types, since we go about removing them the same way.
How many people (again, besides spammers) have you banned?
Ditto, on the spam thing. But I can tell you that all mods together have banned almost 5,000 people. And that would be a lot higher, except that certain types just get deleted outright.
A decent substitute question, though, is how many people we've banned at various post count thresholds, since most banned spammers post very little. Here's a quick breakdown of that:
Banned users:
...with at least 1 post: 759
...with at least 5 posts: 334
...with at least 10 posts: 249
...with at least 25 posts: 100
...with at least 50 posts: 62
...with at least 100 posts: 39
...with at least 500 posts: 7
So, after 15 years and tens of thousands of members, we've still only had to ban a few dozen people with any significant board presence.
How many pictures have users uploaded?
16,649 images have been uploaded as attachments. Way more have been embedded from external sources, of course.
Do I hold the record for the longest period of time between registering and making their first post?
This is a great question. It was harder to figure out than most, technically, but I think I have. You took the 3rd longest in site history between your registration and your first post (a little over five years, or 1,834 days). But this guy (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=312) and this guy (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=21969) each took closer to six. That first one, though, came back simply because he got a "we're deleting all unused accounts" notice, and the second only posted once. So you definitely hold the record among any site regular.
Who are the Top 10 Banned MoFos?
By "Top 10" I mean banned users with the highest post counts. Who were not just spambots.
Powderfinger, 5402
cinemaafficionado, 3865
Django, 1826
Vertical Gunn, 1252
MovieFan31, 1139
Michael_10, 1022
The Next Big Thing, 521
darkhorse, 496
Purandara88, 489
42ndStreetFreak, 466
And, of course, some of these are actually one person (off the top of my head, darkhorse is Django, and I think TNBT is at least one other person on this list, but I forget which).
How many alternate accounts does Sexy Celebrity have and is one of them Santa Claus?
Answered earlier, as SC pointed out. He says I'm wrong about it being seven, but that was just a rough glance, so it might be one or two higher I suppose.
He is not Santa Claus, however.
What's my longest post?
This one (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=935738#post935738), at over 4,000 words. Just a really long list of movies, though. The longest "real" one is this 2,300 word one (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1066079#post1066079) where you're arguing with SC about The Wolf of Wall Street.
Can you see who is giving +reps to who?
Technically, sure, I can log in to the database backend and look it up. That's pretty tedious, though. I don't have a way to just look it up easily on the site itself.
If so, who has given me the most +reps and who have I given the most +reps in total?
Hmmm. Technically, people give rep with the expectation that it'll only be seen by the receiver, so I'm inclined to answer the second question more than the first. But I guess since it's in aggregate and not related to any specific post, there's no issue. But please, everyone, don't all flood me with this same question. ;) Though I'm kinda wondering if this is the kind of thing I should just write up a tool to calculate for everyone, anyway.
Anyway, you've received the most rep from Lucas (+639), and you've given the most to Daniel M (+539).
Who has quoted me the most (with actual quote tags)?
I can't calculate individual tags easily, but I can give you the number of posts that quote you (IE: if they quote you five times in one post, that still only counts as one (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/1b/54/64/1b54647e8350b19ec568da9d362e0730.jpg)). And in that case, it's Guaporense at 126.
How many times has Mark used 5?
It's appeared in 78 of his posts, though I'm guessing a handful of those were him quoting someone else. ;)
Question: Movieforums, what's the meaning of life?
I actually answered this just the other day (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1350928#post1350928).
Last night I was thinking. Who is the one MoFo, aside from Yoda (who owns the place), that most represents MoFo and sticks in my mind as not only one of the biggest contributors to the site, but that was also one of the most vibrant personalities on the boards, and immediately I thought of Holden Pike. The guy has been contributing reviews, info threads, conversation and film tidbits longer than I have been on the site, and I joined in '03. I must admit, when i first started interacting with him, I found him to be a bit gruff. Hey, what did I expect from a guy named Holden pike with a tagline that said "one honery sumbitch"?
Little did I know how big of an influence he would be on my watching habits and outlook on film in general. Up until then, I had been content to watch mere movies, and I rarely considered the subtext, happily ingesting surface concepts as light entertainment. I liked films like Bloodsport, Event Horizon, and Highlander. Yes, over the years my tastes and outlook on film have changed drastically, in no small part due to Holden busting balls, which was of course always followed by a slew of recommendations for films that were actually good. along with some information about the making of the film, the actors in the film or more frequently, info about the directors he liked with a shortlist of their best work. I don't think I would have given films a shot by directors such as Altman, Peckinpah, Lean, or Albert Brooks.
The guy has been here since almost the beginning - the old guard of Movie Forums!
How many avatars did I make for Martian Leader, and why didn't you ever stop me? :p
No idea/because I'm lazy.
Which movie has been asked about more times than any, in the Movie Questions forum?
I know the answer to this. :)
I don't log the solutions, so I dunno. But I assume you're referencing the unofficial, anecdotal count, by which we're all pretty sure it's Frailty.

Yoda, can you tell me about rep ratios...Who has the highest deferential ratio between giving reps and receiving them? (I mean which person is most free giving with reps but doesn't have many themselves)...And the flip side of that, who has the greatest difference in ratio between receiving most reps but not giving them out (stingy;))
And where do I fall in that line, have I given out much more than I have received?
Way too intensive to calculate some of that, I'm afraid--the quick version I tried initially just forced me to restart the database, and the version that won't crash the database would take awhile.
I can easily get you more narrow results, though. For example, your ratio is 1.6 received for every 1 given.

Is the Pulp Fiction live commentary chat ever going to happen?
I think so, yeah. Participation was looking like it was gonna be very sketchy last time, but I think with the rise of thread commentaries it's totally viable now. That, and I really want to replace the chat software for next year's Oscars, so it'd be nice to use this (and the Star Wars marathon Rodent's been planning for the end of the year) as test runs.
FYI, if someone wants to start a thread and start getting people to (really) commit to being there for it, that would help a lot from a planning perspective, on my end. :)
How many members have I banned all time? What's the highest amount of members I've banned in a month? What's the highest amount of members I've banned in a day? What's the highest amount of threads I've deleted in a day?

For some reasons the queries I'm using to group by date are coming up all weird, so I'm not sure I can figure this out all that easily. I'll try a bit more though and let you know if I figure out why it's misbehaving.

As far as the movie question goes, it's a movie that both Holden and I have answered more than a few times each, so we joked about starting a fan club, or something like that. The answer was The Wraith. I was gone for a while, so maybe Frailty caught up. I don't know.

Is there a chance you could do a screen grab from what your control panel looks like? I've always been curious to see how it differs from the serfs.
If you mean the User CP, it's identical.
If you mean the behind the scenes stuff, most of it is run through a piece of software called vBulletin. The control panel on the version of vBulletin we're using looks like this:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/filedata/fetch?id=4006096
There are a handful of other purely custom tools, but most of them are just used by me, so they're spread out and really plain; purely utilitarian. Like, blank white page that just spits out the results of whatever thing it just did (sometimes not even that).
There are, however, a few extra dropdown menus and checkboxes as we browse the site. Checkboxes next to threads and posts so we can move or delete then en masse, extra options under the Tools menu in threads. Stuff like that. It's pretty similar looking, though.

That's kind of like asking what you do to stop your car from breaking down. I could list every single thing that goes into it, but it'd be a lot easier to talk about what causes the errors in a given case.
If this guy's getting database errors with any regularity, and he seems powerless to stop it, then it's probably not a broken query or anything. It's probably the database server going down. I guess someone can sort of blame vBulletin for this if they feel it's not efficient enough (is the site highly active, for example? Like, several times moreso than this one?). But vBulletin can handle some pretty huge sites if you give it sufficient server power and/or don't bog it down with tons of plugins.
That said, I'm always willing to help out a fellow forum owner, if you want to put him in touch with me.

And yeah, it's kind of crazy to think about the scale. I turn 31 in a month. Around the middle of next year I'll have been running this place half my life.
You uploaded it on February 19th, 2004.
Are you joking? Or did you type the wrong year?

I spent most of my life on the Internet and sometimes get feels from remembering old games I played with (online) friends and posting on forums and discovering stuff, and what not. It's kinda scary I have more memories of this sort than these from 'real' life. Even if I still have a lot of these from real world, I still recall these online memories with greater nostalgia. No wonder, really good things mostly started like 5 years ago, or something and still I'd rather not think about these. Come to think of it, I may be the online generation of no-lifes.

I was about to say -- I would have felt bad if I really hadn't noticed Camo until very recently.

Whoops, sorry. Yes, 2014. So you were right: over a year.

It's a shame MoFo wasn't around in the '90s. I truly could have used it back then. It would have been interesting.

How many times did Mr Minio mention my user name on the forum? I randomly find my user name mentioned days after he posted it.

I've been online since 1987, when I was 26... so, MORE than half of my 54 years. Now THAT is crazy!
I like that I had an entire life *before* the Internet and now can't see how any of us lived without it. My own current career path (writing, proofreading, typesetting) would be very different without the Internet.
And I remember Yoda/TWTCommish starting this place, and before that, starting The Warning Track stat site. :)

I sat there for perhaps two minutes with grave doubts about my memory. How can I have missed this MoFo for over TEN years??
"Do I moderate this site while somehow being completely disengaged from the user base to the extent that I don't notice new users for over a decade??"
Whew!

Gah, sorry. Didn't meant to provoke an existential crisis.
This does kinda happen to me sometimes. I'll be browsing and think "I wonder why X hasn't been around." And no joke, the overwhelming majority of time I go check their profile and they're online right that moment, and have plenty of recent activity.
I used to be able to stay on top of the whole site at any one time, but I guess it's a little too big for that now.

I'd have killed this place in the 90's. If you think I post a lot now...:D
Okay, closing up shop on this, at least for this year. ;)
Thanks everyone. It was fun digging up these factoids.

5003 posts over 14 years averages out to 29 per month ... or a post a day.
I'm proud of my output :)
HBD MoFo (a bit belated).
