MoFoGirls have their own threads if they want them, for instance that totally sexist Men Of Our Dreams Thread... some MoFoGirls might even be able to take part in this thread...
The MoFo Beard Club... post your Super-Beards... or have a diary of your Super-Beard in progress in this thread...
Goatee, Van Dyke, Fu-Man-Chu, Dutch or Full Beard... this is the MoMale Thread for the Manliest of Manly stuff... the Beard.
This is my current one... just posted in Personal Pictures... "Full Beard"... 10 weeks old...

I always have a beard (above pic from last week in Hawaii). I have since about 1999, anyway. I keep it trimmed and don't let it get too unruly, but I haven't completely shaved my face in about fifteen years. Nor do I plan to. Lice or chemo are about the only things that are gonna force me to get rid of it. So far, so good.

I've got a friend who's been dyeing his hair since he was 16 - Fine (and probably necessary due to the abuse he'd have got at school) at the time but these days it gives him the air of an ageing chat show host who's contract is up for renewal.

I always keep a little bit of facial hair because I look dumb if I'm completely shaved. That being said, to call it a beard would be an overstatement.

I prefer the first two. You know how we always have our favorite likes about the opposite sex, what attracts us the most, etc . . . I have always preferred three specific things. First, big strong hands, but clean, and no nail biting. I hate how that looks. Then, facial and chest hair. I loooove when a man has both.
Oddly enough, I've dated a huge variety of men. From 5'5", to 6'7". Over weight, skinny, to body builder. Short hair, long hair, or no hair. Pale, tan . . . black. Nine years younger, to fifteen years older. Business looking, hood, prep, etc . . .

I've briefly considered whether to let parts of the beard grow out for quarantine. I did grow it for like 4+ months a couple of years ago over the window. It looked okay at some of the longer lengths but at the end it looked weird, in part because it was different colors at different lengths.
It gets scratchy, though. I've got stuff for that but it's a lot easier to just keep it trimmed through all this, especially since it's warming up. Hm.

Shaved chins are girly anyway...
Well, I don't really shave. But last year I started going with a really short beard and I found it suits me. Here's what I looked like briefly a couple of winters okay, though, as I started to finally shave it off:

If you wait a bit after the itchy period, it becomes quite comfortable.
Yeah, I got past that, mostly because of some beard balm (which is what I was referring to with "I've got stuff for that"). But it was still more work than keeping it close-shaven.
That seems to be the order of difficulty: a short beard is probably the least amount of work, except for a crazy long one, like a year-plus. Anything short of that is more work. And really properly clean-shaven is the most work.
So, I think short of a crazy wizard beard, I'm not-coincidentally doing the thing that generates the least work and the most comfort. Lucky me it works for me, and kinda happens to be the style anyway. Low-effort stuff seems to be becoming the style everywhere.

I shaved my beard off completely a couple of weeks ago at the start of isolation but seeing as I think we're going to be in it for a while now I might try growing it again and see how long I can get it.

From this female POV, this guy looks great. I think a beard should be short & well-groomed.
Silly question: if a guy grows a beard, does he grow his mustache also? Can one have a beard without the tache?
62740
Yeah, for sure, but the "chinstrap" thing looks odd sometimes. I almost don't even count it as a mustache if it links up with the whole rest of the beard. When I think "mustache," I think hair above the lip that's separate from the rest. Which is pretty rare, all things considered.
Anyway, I go shorter than that guy, but I think what looks best depends on your jaw/chin. For some people it makes sense to give it a clearly defined edge, but if you have that anyway I think it looks better to just have it short.

So right now I抦 watching a French movie & the guy has a nice short beard. But his tache doesn抰 connect with the beard & this doesn抰 look right. (Never noticed these things before.)
beards huh.
i have one, more or less. i can never get it to fill out though; and as thin as it can be it doesn't help that it grows kind of wildly. maybe 8 years ago i grew the thing out long. 3 - 4" was long for me. like Yoda noted, the longer it is the more manageable it is. at least that was the case for me. creams, wax, whatever, helped tame it with weight. i still had to keep the mustache area trim as that, to me, was the hardest part to deal with, what with hairs constantly tickling my upper lip, getting into my mouth, raking food, etc. i think that was far worse and longer to deal with than the under-the-neck itch while waiting for things to fill out.
now i'm lazy. i just run a 5 or 7 guard over it all once a week to keep it relatively short. only problem i guess is that the shorter it is, the thinner it looks.

Those were all taken in a row. I grew it out, then decided to shave it, and figured I might as well stop and do in-between shots to see how they compare. Which isn't to say I don't wear that hoodie quite a lot at certain points in the year....but in this case it was all in a short period of time.

I got another male hair question that I just now realized. When women go to the hair salon for a haircut, we get our hair washed there first. Would I be right in saying that men do not get their hair washed at a barber shop? They just get a haircut?

Yep.
In, cut, out.
Have a shower at home to get the itchy stuff off your back and neck.
Half way through shaving off my beard, I decided to make a goofy redneck video.

Mostly yeah. The places I go to are usually just a quick in and out. I could pay extra for the washing but I'm usually just chasing a trim. I will say that if I go to a proper salon or "stylist" then the wash is part of the service but the price already reflects that too.
Oh. They usually spritz my hair with water to straighten it but that's quick to dry as my hair is short. When I was young I had long hair (and more of it). They would wash that. Probably easier to manage longer hair wet and maybe to get any chemical product out that could make it more difficult to handle. Not sure men (in general) want to feel pampered either!
;)

Funny the things one thinks about. Never realized this until today. And no woman would ever have a haircut without a hair wash first.

When I used to daily walk past a local barber (sadly closed now) it occurred to me that men get a haircut or a trim or whatever more frequently than women do. Can抰 explain properly what I mean, but it seems to me that men stay on top of a haircut more than women do.
I think it's more obvious the shorter it is that its time to trim. Like lines over the ear and back neck. It only takes a week or so for that to grow out and start curling or creating small cow-licks.
The guy who cuts my hair usually offers to wash it after because of all the loose hairs and how itchy it'll get. More likely if we're not in a rush or if more was cut than usual, as well. That's after, though. I usually just shower a few hours before I come in.
This is kinda deliberate, since my hair's very thick and wavy and if he cuts it wet it'll look totally different when it tries, so it makes sense to cut it dry.

Should I assume that most men have never had their hair blow-dried?

Men would use car shampoo if they could.

⬆️ Untrue. We have 18 brands of dandruff shampoo. :p
What, like with a hair dryer? Or something more elaborate like those giant circles they put over you? I've done the former.
I think it's mostly about hair type/length. It'd make sense to wet my hair before it was cut if it naturally laid flat or was long enough, but given that it's thick and short, if it's cut wet it'll look totally different once it dries.
I discovered this after years and years of getting my hair cut at cheap places and just assuming I'd never be happy with it. Then we went to some place nicer, I explained the weird quirks of my head, and the guy said he'd cut it dry. Boom. Better ever since.

It's those huge green ears that get in the way.
As far as wet or dry, blow dried or otherwise I have done it all. When my hair is longer I use a blow dryer occasionally, but I almost always get my hair cut slightly damp. It really depends on type of hair and length from what I am told by a barber friend. When I was in the military it was pretty straight forward - I got a flat top usually and it was never long enough to matter either way.
⬆️ What I meant was if most men get their hair cut dry, should I assume that most men have not had their hair blow-dried with a hair dryer?
I wouldn't think so. Doesn't most hair dryer use happen at home, anyway? We have one. Wife probably uses it a lot more than I do, but I've used it occasionally.

That's the difference between a "stylist" and a "barber."
Yes, men don't get their hair washed at a barbershop, but if you go to any unisex stylist they wash your hair and blowdry it.

I think also that most men don’t make an appointment at the barber shop. Guessing one can’t even make an appointment. Women have “walk-in” salons too, but am guessing most women make an appointment to get their hair done.

Growing mine out a little because it's colder, but not too much. It gets scratchy pretty easily. That, and for whatever reason my beard has stayed darker than the hair on the top of my head, and the difference is more pronounced when the beard's longer. I found it all looks better together shorter.

It's only itchy at first. When mine is full grown, it's very comfortable. There are times I'll go to my porch with scissors just to do a 2-second trim.
I never grew out my hair until a couple of years ago. I shaved it two years ago during the hot summer, and I was freezing with chills. Long hair/beard makes such a big difference in these freezing winters.
Yeah, I did grow it out over an entire winter (maybe 3+ months) a few years ago. The itch did get better (I also used this stuff on it that helped). But it was awful for a bit. And it really did/does look weird, with the color difference. My old man had the same thing, his hair on top was basically white and his beard was close to black.

I was unfortunately one of those guys who could grow a beard in 9th grade. I remember the first time I had to shave. Freshman wrestling tourney. After weigh ins the coach gave me a disposable razor and said to go get rid of the whiskers. Had no idea what I was doing, so I dry shaved then proceeded to wrestle all day. At the end of the day it felt like I had shoved my face into a fire pit.

Yeah it's strange...
Mine goes through 2 stages of itchiness.
So like, chop it back... and around the 19 day mark it's still fine, then at the 20 day mark it gets almost unbearably itchy.
Push through that, by day 25 it's fine.
Then completely out of nowhere, around day 40 it does it again, then goes away :D
