View Full Version : So who's ready for another Song Tournament?

I was thinking it might be nice to do a different kind of theme, instead of just a certain type of music genre. I thought it might be fun to do a song tournament with a subject theme instead, like the song titles must have a place in the title.
It could be kind of generic, like the place doesn't have to be a specific city, state, etc., so generic places would be acceptable. Therefore songs like "Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis Presley, (a hotel is a place), "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" by Paul Simon, (a schoolyard is a place), and even something generic like "Here, There and Everywhere" by The Beatles, would be acceptable. It could even be stretched to allow "places" like Heaven and Hell.
However this is just an idea, and if most people are against it, I'm open to suggestions.
So who's up for another song tournament, and what kind of theme/genre is everyone interested in this time?

Assuming enough people are ready for another song tournament, do we want the nominations to be visible to everyone or kept secret again?

Since bands almost always win, maybe a solo artist tournament?

Instead of just places, why not call it People, Places and Things Song Tournament?
I just worry that not everyone will be able to think of a place, or people think of the same songs. If you include people (like people's names, or something like "My Dog" - if there is such a song - or "My Car" for things), there's more options.

I'm with Sexy. More options make more fun, but still is limited enough to call it a proper song tournament with a theme.

I wanted the theme to be kind of generic because I don't want to limit it so much that people can't find songs.
If we go with "people, places, and things", I think it might be better to have the songs listed publicly, so if there are any objections to what's considered a "person, place, or thing", we can discuss it before the tournament starts.

an idea - have people places and things but let's not have pronouns , so no me, I, he, she, they, everybody, it etc . The people have to have a name like My Sharona, or a description like Coal Miners Daughter. The place can have a name or a description like Dirty Old Town. The thing part has to be a noun so you could have Fat Bottomed Girls but not Don't Stop Me Now .
Just an idea :)

I don't understand why "Welcome to the Jungle" would be no good. Isn't "the Jungle" a place?

If we decide to use the "people, places, and things" idea, then maybe we should use rules like no pronouns (I, me, us, we, you, he, she, him, her, etc.) for people, but people's names and occupations would be okay, and the things must be something physical or tangible that could actually be touched.
I'm not sure how to limit places because originally that was the only theme I was thinking about, so I was trying to keep that generic, so I was hoping to include places that weren't necessarily an actual place that you could physically go, like "here" or "there", and "Heaven" or "Hell", or even someplace generic like "the sky" or "the ocean".

So where did we land on this tournament? Do we have enough people who are interested, and do we have a theme?

I think the song tournament idea based on nouns isn't really that exciting. It will force people to have to hunt down specific kinds of songs, while being confusing at the same time. People may end up nominating songs they don't really care for.......
I'm actually kinda intrigued to just do an "anything goes" Song Tournament 12. I like seeing what new stuff people nominate. Plus it would be your first time doing a normal Song Tournament, GB. You did a themed one already ('70s).
You could always do something Godoggo did once -- she made it mandatory that ONE song in your list had to be something specific. For this tournament, you could say -- ONE song from our lists has to have a place, another has to have a name, etc. etc. But not all of them.

SC could run a solo singer tournament, I'd join that as I know lots of you love rock and heavy rock, I don't mind listening to some myself but a lot of tourneys have a lot of rock songs in them, so a solo one would be nice :)

This really isn't that difficult. gbg pick a theme you like and I think most will go with it because it seems that most of us will play, pretty much, regardless. Of course everyone has they're own interests and there are areas that people just don't have any interest in, but if you pick something broad/universal, such as places, names/people, weather, working, space, the beach, the sea, the family, animals etc then it should be broad enough to accommodate everyone's genre tastes without overly favouring or restricting any genre in particular.

I suggest when the One Artist is done, the number of seed songs are reduced, why?
Because, it's summer and people don't have as much time to listen to 100 plus songs.
And because many Artist don't have 10-12 great songs, so less seed songs to start will make it easier to pick Artist with fewer hits.

I took it to mean either one. A group or a solo singer.
I use the Grammy Awards as an example as to why I didn't assume that it was only solo singers. For example, both Bobby Darin and The Beatles were nominated for Best New Artist, and they both won.
So, looking at it that way, I would think you could choose whichever you'd prefer.
But if we are going to set rules as to what sort of artist we can choose, then I call Paul McCartney. If I can't use songs from a band (meaning Wings), then I will choose the solo artist from that band. :) Yes, I am being lazy about finding someone else. :D But until then, and assuming groups are still allowed, I am still going with Wings.

If there's a cover tournament, I'd like it to be covers & remixes.

Could somebody pick someone like Paul McCartney and be able to use his solo songs, his songs with The Beatles, and his songs with Wings, or would that be three separate artists?
Or could someone pick The Beatles, and also use the solo songs from each of the individual band members, or would they all be separate artists?
Using those three as the example, they are definitely different artists. I consider them that, at least. I don't know how others would feel about that.

I would join one-artist but I think it could end up lame. I always suggest it so I will again, a solo artist tournament-because rock bands usually win.
I would like this too and I'm bored with rock bands . Can't we have a general song tournament but using only solo artists?

I'm okay with a Solo Artist Song Tournament.
I'm not running it, though, and that's for everyone's benefit.

Who's going to run it then? I'd love to run one but I've not got time with work an all.

I didn't even know that Bananarama had more than one song. I thought they were a one-hit-wonder.
Bananarama are an English female pop music vocal group formed in London in 1979 by friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward. Their success on both pop and dance charts have earned the group a listing in The Guinness Book of World Records as the all-female group with the most chart entries in the world, a record which they still hold.
I think the only Bananarama song I've heard is "Venus", and I'm not even sure that it's their song.

Now, I was looking forward to doing the One Artist thing. But if people are not too interested in bands participating, I have a suggestion.
And it is only a suggestion. :)
How about we do this:
1. General Song Tournament
2. One Artist Tournament - Solo Version
3. Whatever it is people would want to do next
4. One Artist Tournament - Duo, Trio or Group Version
I want to use who I picked out. I want to have that band in a tournament like that. But if people are worried that a solo artist won't have a chance to beat a band, then why not just separate the two?
And I was thinking about having a different tournament between 3 and 4 just to have a break with the One Artist theme.

I have my songs picked out for a General Song Tournament...unless it's really big. I think somewhat smaller amount of seed songs would make the tournaments faster, funner and with better songs.

Although, if GB runs it we might be getting something like Country Time Lemonade Song Tournament.

Just another thought I had to try and ensure a mix of songs would be a 'genre' tournament .... not where the whole tournament is one genre (like Metal) but where each player picks a different particular genre and nominates only songs that fall into that genre (like disco, heavy rock, reggae, blues, rap etc..).
Great minds think alike! I was thinking the same idea.
I thought each round could feature all the songs from one participant (and therefore one genre)... A metal round, a country round, etc. On rounds Day 2 Day 3 etc, the winners from each music category would be paired only with themselves, until there's a mini winner in each category. Then the categories for the final round would battle it for best overall song.
It's easier then it sounds and at least it's different! and has not been tried before.

Okay, it looks like nobody seems to be stepping up to run the next song tournament, so I've been thinking about running a general song tournament, but I have one concern.
There have been a few threads about metal music recently, and as most of you know, I don't like metal, but I don't want to run a general song tournament and then say something like no metal songs are allowed because that wouldn't be fair.
I'm willing to run it, if those of you who love metal try to not bombard the song tournament with metal music. I'm not saying no metal music, but would you guys be willing to keep the metal music to a minimum?
This wouldn't be a "rule". It would just be a "request". Basically the only "rules" would be the normal ones like no previous tournament winners, and no songs over 10 minutes long.
What does everyone think of this?

I'm cool with that and as it takes somebody to run a tournament, I appreciate your time on doing this for all of us.

Honestly, I think if people bombard the tournament with metal songs and you don't like metal... don't listen to it. Don't vote for it. It's that simple. I don't want a metal extravaganza either, but frankly, I see nothing wrong with just passing over those songs and not even listening to them. Just don't let anyone know you didn't listen to it and you'll be fine. Discretion is key.

I'm just trying to be fair to everyone, and it wouldn't be fair to exclude metal songs, and it also wouldn't be fair for me to not listen to them, so I thought this would be a fair compromise.

I'm kind of with SC on this one. I'd be fine with you listening to it once (if you didn't know the song) and then not listening again if it made it to further rounds. But if you just didn't listen because you don't like metal, I'd be ok with that.
That said, if we just don't nominate anything too heavy or a great deal of it, then it's not really a problem.

None of mine would be metal anyway. I don't mind them, it's the preponderance of arena rock songs that have dominated song tournaments that have got on my wick. That's why the instrumental tournament was so refreshing.

Alternatively run one that suits you Gbg, if no-one is prepared to step up and run a general one then the next one can be whatever the person that runs it decides it should be.
I thought about running something specific, but there were a few people who wanted a general song tournament before both the TV Show Theme Song Tournament and the Instrumentals Song Tournament, so I didn't think it would be fair to make them wait again.
