Who is psyched for this game? I sure am.

The original is probably the prime game from my childhood and is the first game I played with my step-dad. He in fact introduced me to the game and franchise.

I just thought I would make this thread to see if anyone else shares the same interest as me in the franchise.

Also, I think it would be great to discuss both the upcoming remake and the original game.

I'm dubious about a remake. The original is brilliant. Will a remake be better graphics at the expense of story? To me, VII was the high point of the franchise, although I stopped playing after X-2.

I've heard that they are building upon the story. Trying to add extra elements and depth maybe.

Although yes, FF7 is the high-point of the franchise for me too and if they don't make this good I will be very disappointed.

I like the scope of the original story though, all the unanswered questions, all the things that don't quite add up, all the little side stories and subplots, it's all part of the charm. I hope they don't try to tie up loose ends or make it tighter.

Will the characters talk? I'm not sure how I feel about that. It wouldn't be the same without Cid swearing in a little blue box...

Final Fantasy VII is my favourite ever game. I do agree with TN though that I'm not exactly crazy about this idea, still I'll play it. I had a copy of FF7 that my uncle gave me for about two years before I finally played it and I've since completed it multiple times and have a save on my ps1 memory card as well as my PS3 in which I'd done everything. And I'm not even much of a gamer.

I hope they dont change the Materia concept. That was the best power concept they had in the entire series, and made most sense.

Loved this game. I wonder though...will the magic remain if i return to it after all these years, or is it best left as a fond memory of gaming's past?

I liked VII a lot, but it wasn't the high point of the series for me. For that, I'd choose the FF spinoff Final Fantasy Tactics, which got a typical Square Enix semi-remake some years back. As far as main series goes, I like FF IV, VI, and X more that VII, though I still like VII a lot.

My hope is that they don't turn it into an ARPG and retain the Materia system to keep character customization up. I liked FFXIII's fast paced combat system, but one of the things that this lacks is full party control, which most ARPGs lack as well. I think full party control is essential to FF's storytelling and should not be scrapped for a "more fun" (read: modern) combat system.
As far as voice acting, I fear that with Nomura directing there's a fair fear of it being cringeworthy performances. I'm not fundamentally against voice acting, but I don't have much confidence in them to pull it off, especially for the angst-filled Cloud and for Barrett.

FF X is probably my second favourite. While I'm one of the few who actually liked FF VIII even if it was a bit easy

I get what you mean yeah.

I imagine that it will be voice-acted too.

X is probably my third favorite (just above IX).

I don't have an Xbox One or PS4 but after seeing the reveal for this... It's got me thinking of picking a Playstation up. I'd like to get into all the Ratchet & Clank games I've missed since PS2, as well.

I remember those games! I heard that the PS4 is soon to be backwards-compatible and I haven't played the PS3 ones. I'll probably purchase them at some point after it is possible to play them on a PS4.

Judging by Square Enix's current trends, it'll probably come out on PC too, so you're good if you have that

Oh!! If they have FF VII II (?) on PC then that would be perfect!!! Could you imagine the graphics quality?!

I hope they go all-out on the music because believe me it was award winning in the first one yet was the most underappreciated aspect of the game. Aint no way someone could play that for hours on hours if it sounded like an episode of Barney.

Agreed I love some of that music.
And yeah I'm excited for the game.

Tried to show my girlfriend FFX but we only made it to the first blitzball match and she lost interest.

I'm really glad about this because I never played FF7, I started with FF8 onwards. Everyone has always said "YOU MUST PLAY FF7", or "ZOMG YOU NEVER PLAYED FF7!!! GO RIGHT NOW AND PLAY!!".

I never could be bothered to go and play it with mid nineties graphics but now that it's getting a remake looks like I'll finally give it a shot.

Loved FF8 and FF10 way above every other one played. FF9 was awful, 12 was ok and 13 was just terribad, tunnel after tunnel of mobs with no freedom of movement and awful combat that felt like it was all automated. Apparently it got better after 20+ hours but I never got that far.

Sedai

Thank you! FF13 was absolutely, terribly bad. I tried so, so hard to like it, but dammit, it was just no good.

Camo

I wouldn't say 9 was awful while certainly one of the weaker points in the series I still found it pretty enjoyable. It had awful characters though I'll give you that.

Also agreed with both of you on FF13, I still ended up completing it but yeah it wasn't any good.

Square Enix had this strange system of different teams working on different titles, so you would play FF8 love it, then play FF9 and have it feel totally different. FF 10 was made by the FF8 team and was great again.

I really liked 8 as well, probably my third fav after 7 and 10. It seems to be pretty hated by a lot of fans but I think that has more to do with having to follow FF7. My only problem with it is that I thought it was probably the easiest out of the ones I played.

I got out of gaming for a while when 8 and 9 were released, so I missed those. Once I got into a PS2 and got back into gaming, I had to give X a try. My GF at the time wasn't a big video game fan, but both of us got completely sucked into that game. We were up late, trying to do all the side quests, swearing at blitzball, and marveling at the then cutting edge tech they had used for the game.

I still recall almost everything about that game, all the story beats, the boss battles, and how blown away we were by the Aeon summons at the time. We even got most of the ultimate weapons, except that one where you had to dodge 100 lightning strikes in a row. Whomever came up with that challenge was a complete jerk! So impossible!!!

Yes, we found all the little cactus people and did the Chocobo races and all the rest. Final Fantasy X represents a high point in JRPG gaming for me, even though VII was bit more cutting edge when it first hit, as no one had seen anything on that scale before. I still look back on all the FFX characters like old friends, and I wouldn't mind returning to that world again sometime.

Great stuff Sedai  . I actually have a save were I got all of the ultimate weapons, including the lightning one which was the blue guy with the spears (can't remember his name) if I remember correctly. Did you beat Penance? I'd say that was the most difficult boss I beat in a FF.

Haha I remember that lightning strike challenge, I did it but prob took days. I do remember controller getting thrown across room. I remember to get the Cactuar King Aeon in FF8 you had to go to Cactuar island and kill 100 in a row before boss would appear. Like trying to get all the 00 challenges on Goldeneye, or some parts of original metal Gear Solid on extreme difficulty.

Characters were great in FF10 like you say, off top of my head epic Auron with his cool shades. Epic Aeon summoner Yuna, Rikku(I think), Wacca. Can't remember the woman sorceress name, or the hero(could you name him in this?) was it Tidus? What was the big snow guy called? What was that epic Samurai Aeon called again? Zanmato getting me out of scrapes more times than I can remember, especially when the Dark Aeons show up.

Card game from FF8, triple triad greatest mini game ever. Great card game on Witcher 3 aswell.

Camo

The woman sorceress was Lulu, Tidus was the main hero can't remember the snow guys name. Yojimbo was the Samurai Aeon, i remember his main attack was instant death as long as you offered him enough money  . Still the best Aeon was Anima IMO.

The first time i played FF8 I always avoided the card game, but yeah it was fun and very useful for equipment for weapons and stuff.

Sedai
06-19-15, 05:47 PM
I was all about Anima once I got it, but I recall that being pretty far into the game at Baaj temple. Dang, I wish they would do a hi-res PC port so I could play this again - I don't have a PS3 or a PS4.

It will be interesting to see how it shakes out. The more I hear, the more my enthusiasm wanes. Reportedly not being done in-house and changes more than just graphics.

Yes, everybody wants turn-based combat. It's a 20 year old game, that's part of it.

turn based combat is nice. but I wouldn't mind if they added real time as an option.

Looks like the US version didn't get Penance as a boss. Bummer!

Hardest for me is still Ruby Weapon in FF VII

Speaking of FF VII - I started a new game this weekend! Sort of a half-assed HD modded version, but the backgrounds still look outdated and rough, Regardless, I am having a blast playing it. just finished up the section with Aerith and the flower garden after Cloud falls.

Did the US get The Emerald Weapon? I always found him harder than Ruby but beat them both.

I have been considering playing it again as well. I bought 7,8 and 9 on PlayStation Store a few years ago so I would probably just play it on that.

TONGO

I ended up beating Emerald, and then a long while after beat Ruby. Damn Ruby was so hard, you had to get a Knights Of The Round Table summons, and then a Mimic duplicate TWICE just to beat the mean red bastid. I was watching WCW Nitro the last time fighting Ruby, put it on automatic, and actually missed my heroes finally killing it.

Wouldnt have been a great graphics display anyway, and did you notice the least graphically designed things in game were the mega-bosses?! Just a big ol splotch of green and red. Like the designers were saying "Chew on this you OCD idgits!" :)

Heroes I used in game the most were Cid and Valentine.

Underwater? I remember you could stop Ruby for a few shots by hitting him with the Hades Summon, didn't figure that out until I had beat him for the first time :D

@Tongo I ended up beating Ruby before I had Knights of the Round with Omnislash mostly. I actually beat Emerald with KOTR. I usually used Cloud, Vincent and either Barrett or Tifa.
