View Full Version : Upcoming Animated Musicals Hall of Fame
gbgoodies
06-17-15, 01:25 AM
This is my first time running a Hall of Fame, so we may have to work out some bugs together, but I'll do my best to make everyone happy.
For those of you who don't know how a HoF works, everyone who joins nominates one movie. In this case, it will be an Animated Musical Movie.
Once all the nominations are in, (we'll work together to decide on a good deadline for this), everyone who nominated a movie will watch all the movies, in whatever order you want to watch them, and then we will discuss them here on the board.
When we're done watching all the movies, (we'll agree on a deadline for this too), everyone who joined will PM me a list of the movies, ranked #1 - however many movies were nominated, and then I will calculate the votes and announce the winner.
I haven't had a chance to compile the rules yet, but I will list the rules in this post tomorrow. If you have any questions, please ask.
You can start calling "dibs" on your nominations now right here in this thread.
Members and their nominations:
需st铖y - Beauty and the Beast (1991)

That's funny because I was thinking that whoever picks Beauty and the Beast will probably win.
I'm probably the only one who wasn't going to pick that because I like to pick movies that I think are underrated and underseen.
BTW, I watched a little bit of Team America, and if Camo wants to nominate it, it's okay with me if it's okay with everyone else. It's not really animated, but it's not live-action either, so I'll allow it in this HoF if nobody objects.

Actually, I just hold a severely high score for getting around on this board. My banning record is insane. Something like 22 seconds 3 times, and then 34 seconds for the last. I move like greased lightening, girl friend!:D

Oh what the hell, I'm in.
I nominate The Nightmare Before Christmas
I'd like to nominate The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I'm hoping someone else nominates Fantasia. I haven't seen it since I was a kid, so I can't really nominate it as I don't remember much about it, but I've been meaning to rewatch it.

I don't care. To me, whoever runs the famer, should decide everything. I'm too easy going, I suppose. I just like for it to be peaceful. I like peaceful. I REALLY LIKE PEACEFUL!!! :p

Well, I have to be honest. For one brief moment I looked at Pinterest. And I went back and there it was! All that went through my mind was "Not again!". :D
Well, I have 2 films in my mind. I will think about it tonight and if nobody has said anything, I will announce my nomination tomorrow.

One question though, does Fantasia even count as a musical? It's set to classical pieces, but to me a musical involves characters singing, which Fantasia lacks.
Sorry for being a d earlier GBG :) . South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut?

I'm trying to be as lenient as possible with the nominations so that everyone's happy, so as long as nobody objects, Fantasia would be eligible.
But I knew I should have added a comment about no spider movies.

I don't expect South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut to rank high on my ballot either, but I've actually never seen a full episode of the TV show, so maybe it will surprise me. I watch "The People's Court" every day, and Judge Marilyn Milian quotes from the TV show a lot, and she's awesome, so how bad can the show be?

Just a note. I'm adding the nominations to the first post of this thread as people call "dibs", so if you nominated something and you don't see it listed there, please let me know so I can add it to the list.
Also, I'm trying to do this as democratically as possible, so if anyone has any questions about eligibility of a movie, we can try to make a group decision here. Hopefully we'll be able to work it out together. If not, my decision will be final, (and hopefully as fair as possible).

Also, if anyone wants to change their nomination, changes will be allowed as long as we haven't started the HoF yet, but obviously once we start, there will be no more changes allowed.

It doesn't have a great rating on IMDB, but that's never stopped me from watching a movie before, so I won't let it stop me now.
Plus it stars both Nathan Lane and Kelsey Grammer, so it should be pretty good. :)
I nominate Fantasia.
The only Disney animated film in my 100, and for a good reason. The segments all play together in harmony, even though they're all totally different. The imagery and music are things I can listen and watch all day long.
I was originally planning to nominate South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, but I saw Swan had already nominated it, or Frozen to annoy everyone. :p

Just out of curiosity, can anyone just start a HoF thread?
There's usually a schedule for the HoFs so we don't have too many of them going on at the same time. There was only supposed to be one Musical HoF, but it got divided into two separate ones, (Live-Action and Animated), at the last minute.
I know that there's a Documentary one scheduled after these, but I'm not sure what's on the schedule after that.

Is Allegro Non Troppo animated enough or is Gauche the Cellist musical enough? Whichever qualifies I'll nominate.
I only saw Allegro Non Troppo once, and I've never even heard of Gauche the Cellist.
I remember that Allegro Non Troppo had quite a bit of animation, but there was some live action too, so it kind of falls in between the two categories. Hopefully someone here knows the movie well enough to know if it qualifies as animated. If nobody objects, then it's okay with me, so I'll tentatively put you on the list with Allegro Non Troppo, and I'll make a note that Gauche the Cellist is your backup.
We'll have to ask on here tomorrow when more people are online to see if these are eligible. Meanwhile, I'll try to research them a bit tonight and see what I can find out about them.
Miss Vicky

Was it because of the donkey scene?
That and the Whale scene, also just the story in general. Disney often took f'd up stories and made them into pleasant things, but I've read Pinocchio (now) and for whatever reason they decided to make it a lot darker. Disney a lot of my love for The Exorcist comes from my childhood nightmares, same for Poltergeist 2 I prefer it much more than the original now which just feels like the 12 year old Spielberg attempting horror. I still love Poltergeist, but think of it more as an adventure film now rather than a horror.
Also I know Spielberg did not direct it.

Is it too late to change The Little Mermaid to The Lion King?
So I just caught up with the other musical thread.
I know that most of the racket was for laughs. but did it have to go that far? Nobody gave enough room for CR to even breathe. It seemed like everyone left him out because he's an old geezer that doesn't think properly. Even though I also don't agree with him I would have taken the time to discuss and reach an agreeing point, and at the same time joke around. Once the first few flames were ignited the thread went to the wrong direction, leading it to be closed.
I really wish this could all start over again, because something is going to go wrong, eventually, in such an unstable state. Both threads were barely standing and now one of them has fallen. Maybe we can start again after the main MoFo Hall of Fame thread is created again and the docs one gets a proper schedule. Or we can all take a break from HoFs for a while because if every single HoF gets planned and run like this in a rapid speed I'm not joining anymore.
Edit - Alright, I just found out that CR didn't act cool even after apologizing. So it pretty much means that everyone is being real cranky all because of one message board tournament. We all need to chill. Chill Club anyone?

I stated earlier that I was going to keep this open for about a week to allow people to decide on their nominations, so until then, you can keep posting your nominations.
I updated the first post with the nominations list. allowing Allegro Non Troppo, changing Nope1172's nomination from The Little Mermaid to The Lion King, and adding Friendly Mushroom's Pinocchio nomination and Gunslinger's Sleeping Beauty nomination.

I think Alice is the best bet of those three. I loved An American Tail when I was a child, but a recent rewatch of it just annoyed me. I watched Hunchback for the first time not long ago and didn't like it either.

I've never seen The Hunchback of Notre Dame, so I can't compare it to the other two movies, but IMO Alice In Wonderland is better than An American Tail. I loved An American Tail when I was a kid, (I even have a big doll of Fievel Mousekewitz), but it wasn't as good when I re-watched it recently for the Animation List.
As long as nobody comes along and picks those movies, you still have a few days to decide.

Alice In Wonderland is better than An American Tail. I loved An American Tail when I was a kid, (I even have a big doll of Fievel Mousekewitz), but it wasn't as good when I re-watched it recently for the Animation List.
It is funny that the two of you both, essentially, said the same thing about "An American Tail". I only started to consider it because I bought it really cheap at the store a few months ago and haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet. I haven't watched it in YEARS. So, this would've been my excuse to get around to finally doing so. But with both of your opinions, it makes me wonder how I will feel about it after all of these years (I, too, loved it was a kid, which is why I went ahead and bought it). So I will keep that one for when for myself to watch sometime. Hopefully I will feel better about it than the two of you after the rewatch. ;)
I will just nominate "Alice In Wonderland".
I kind of like "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (I haven't seen this one in years either), but I was leaning more towards "Alice In Wonderland", anyway. So, I will nominate that one.

I added your nomination to the list in the first post. I hope you enjoy An American Tail when you re-watch it. It's still a pretty good movie, but it wasn't as great as I remembered it.

I think Alice is the best bet of those three. I loved An American Tail when I was a child, but a recent rewatch of it just annoyed me. I watched Hunchback for the first time not long ago and didn't like it either.
Then again, I hate musicals and most animated musicals aren't exceptions to that.
I have noticed that as I have gotten older Don Bluth movies have lost their luster. Loved them as kids, not so much on revisit.

I've only seen it once, and I think it was OK. In my mind, it was a pretty decent movie, but that was years ago that I saw it. So I will be curious to see how I feel about it now.

I just watched this one about 6 months ago or so. I hadn't seen it in years and really wanted to watch it again. I always loved it. And it was still pretty good, I thought. Although it was a lot shorter than I remembered it being.

I don't remember exactly, I'll have to look when I get home. But it didn't even make the near miss list, while two other inferior Bluth movies made the countdown. :(

I'm getting pretty excited for this. I've never seen Fantasia or Allegro non troppo, I'm most pumped about seeing those. I've probably seen the rest of the Disney noms, but not since I was a lot younger. The exception being Beauty and the Beast, I've never seen Beauty and the Beast. Also, three-year old jiraffe cried when his parents took him to see The Lion King, so this hall of fame might bring to the surface some traumatic experiences for me.

I didn't have Fantasia on VHS, so it didn't get watched a million times like The Patriot, Shrek, Austin Powers, and other movies I don't remember.
Allegro Non Troppo is fantastic, I voted for the Bolero part in the Animation countdown.
I've seen all of these except JJs nomination. The only one that truly needs a rewatch is Fantasia which I haven't seen since I was around ten, but I'm going to rewatch them all anyway. Probably watch a few of them with my nephew.

JJ's nom is the only one I've not seen, too. I'll be rewatching all of the the others (except Pinocchio, which I just watched), but there are several that I don't like or am indifferent to.
I like them all to varying degrees. Chances are my nom won't be my #1.

Out of the 13 nominations, I have seen 10. Other than "Beauty and the Beast", I haven't seen any of them recently (or even in the past 10 years or so). I am expecting this to be a good one to kick off my Hall of Fame experience here. After all, I remember liking most of what I have already seen.

I have seen lets see how many disney animated features and lets face it all the disney animated films were musicals. The Pixar and Dreamworks movies were animted but had modern music thrown in not composed music. My favorite Animated Music cal Movies were The Land Before Time yes i know a Don Bluth film but he worked on many disney Classics. Then there would be Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, Jungle Book, Fantasia Movies. Lion King and Hunchback Of Notra Dom. The List would go in that order for me.

Not true. Most of the modern Disney animated films are not musicals and even among the classics you have films that don't qualify, like Bambi.
Bambi is a horror film.
@SilventVamp I remember Fantasia 2000, I probably watched it when I was little, back then I immensely enjoyed it, but I rewatched it for the MoFo Animation List countdown and I was hugely disappointed, the music was there but the magic wasn't.

That would be a good idea just to get the chance to really compare the two. I know it doesn't live up to the original, but I really don't remember that much about it. Maybe I should make a double feature out of it, too. :)

You guys can always start slow. Make sure everyone has a good start to collecting the movies in some sort of way for viewing, and then maybe set it up to watch them together, or close to, anyway. Why rush!?!

Hello there, I hope it isn't too late. I would like to ask first of all what would be an animated musical movie? I mean it's any animated movie with a song? Also in the HoF of this category, the movies are voted by it's song or by movie itself?. I asked this because maybe the whole point is the songs or maybe it is a category and we have to vote the best movie. May I nominate The Emperor's New Groove, I am not sure if it is an animated musical? If it does then I'd like to nominate it :)
Vote by how good the movie is not the songs. It is up to GBG to decide what does and doesn't count, personally I feel New Groove doesn't despite how much I enjoy it. Still I'm sure you can think of some more that do count Tat :) . Assuming anyone agrees with me that is.

I didn't remember The Emperor's New Groove having any songs in it, so I just looked it up, and it only has two songs. I don't think that really qualifies as a musical.
An animated musical is basically an animated movie that has more than just a few songs or musical selections in it. If you look at the first post of the thread, you can see the movies that have already been nominated,so you can get an idea of what has already qualified.
I'm willing to be lenient on allowing movies to be nominated, but I don't think that only two songs really qualifies it as a musical. (There will be an Animated Movie HoF sometime in the future, which will be animated movies that don't have to be musicals, and The Emperor's New Groove will qualify for that one.)

I just had a thought go through my mind. Which version of "Beauty and the Beast" are we watching? Is it going to be the original theatrical release or the special edition (which, essentially, just has the one song added to it - a song that was supposed to be in the film but was cut)? It is a very minor thing, I suppose. But I was just curious. :)
Does it matter? I'm actually asking you vamp, if it makes a difference and everyone has access to it, I'm sure that's the one we will go for. :)
SilentVamp
06-22-15, 01:54 AM
I suppose which version a person watches doesn't really matter that much. I was just wondering because with that one song put back into the film (where it should've been to begin with - I believe it was cut because they thought it made the film too long), it would make the movie more "complete" with it back in its proper place.
But I don't care. I will just go along with what everyone else wants to do. :)

I have the Diamond Edition Blu-Ray + DVD that has 3 versions of the movie, so I'll probably watch the Extended Edition, but I don't think it really matters. Anyone who has access to the Extended Edition will probably want to watch it, but I think the Theatrical Version is okay if that's what people have access to.

Tatmmw2, I answered your question earlier about what would qualify as an animated musical. Do you want to join this HoF before it officially starts? The Emperor's New Groove doesn't qualify as an animated musical, so you would have to pick a different movie, but there's still time to join. (However not a lot of time because this will probably officially start tonight.)
Also in the HoF of this category, the movies are voted by it's song or by movie itself?. I asked this because maybe the whole point is the songs or maybe it is a category and we have to vote the best movie.
BTW, I missed this part of your question yesterday. The movies are ranked by the movie, not just by a song.
Each person who joins nominates one Animated Musical movie, and after you watch all the movies, you would rank the movies in the order that you liked them, numbered from #1 through however many movies were nominated, and then you would send your ranked list to me by private message before the deadline. (The actual deadline date hasn't been determined yet, but it will be about 1 week per movie nominated, so for example, if there are 13 movies nominated, then the deadline date would be 13 weeks from the official start date.)

That was the other segment I enjoyed. I get that the movie was a groundbreaking achievement, but it didn't really feel cohesive or engaging. It felt like "here's a little bit of this and now a little bit of that."
I agree with you, I can't consider myself a fan of the overall product.
