Anybody on here play poker or like to watch it?

Used to do both a lot. I started playing a ton with my friends a year or two after the big poker boom, like everyone else it seems. As we've all grown up it's been much harder to get games together, though--we get to do it 2-3 times a year these days, generally. Still really enjoy it, though more as an excuse to hang out and make each other laugh than for the game itself.

Used to watch High Stakes Poker for high-level stuff and the WSOP on ESPN for general entertainment. Haven't in a really long time though. Last time I got interested at all was when Ivey made the final table.

I remember when Chris Moneymaker fluked his way into winning the World Series Of Poker, and Phil Ivey took the worst beat Ive ever seen on the River card against him to go out 9th or 10th. I like Daniel Negranu (prob mispelt), really like poker, but am real bad at it.

Must post this pic in tribute to this thread. If you havent seen Rounders and are a poker fan, DO IT NOW!!!

My brother and a couple of our friends started getting in to it quite a bit last summer. We found a local pub that hosted a standard Texas Hold Em game every Friday night, £15 buy-in with cash paid out to the top 4. I go to university so I can't always go, but when I'm back home I like to.

It's moved location since we started going (just down the road), but the people remain the same with a few new faces. Good crowd of people, normally about twenty turn up, with about fifteen regulars, it's something different to do on a Friday night. As you say it's not all about the game itself, it's fun to hang out and do something social, and actually saves me more money than a standard 'night out'. I think I've been about eight times in total, my brother/friends much more. I managed to win it once (£135 as me and other player in top two split it, although nowadays winner probably gets closer to £200) and normally I make it to the last table. I think twice I've finished outside of the top six since I've been going, and both of them have been recently.

I wouldn't say I'm that good right now, but I'm trying to improve my game. My brother records World and European Poker Tour whenever they're shown on TV, so I try and watch them when I can. I've downloaded the Coral app, although don't want to get involved too much in real cash games at the moment because of the obvious possibility of addiction. Normally I play the free-roll games in the background for a bit of fun, and to practice whilst I'm on the computer. I came 15th out of about 1000 people the biggest free-roll tournament the other day, which i was happy but also gutted with. As I continue to play and improve I'll probably try and enter more money games, and try out Pokerstars which most people seem to use.

I play often ... online and tournaments at the casino

Loved online poker. Freerolled a bankroll on Stars and Tilt. The ability to compete at a drop of the hat was one of the biggest draws.

It's hard to get a live game. Most aren't invested enough to take it seriously or use of wildcards waters down the experience.

Started with hold'em and became a fan of omaha and omaha hi/lo. If not for following the hi stakes players, I would have never learned chinese poker, which is one of my favorites.

I play on Facebook and used to play in a league.

My buddy Finchy is one of the best in the Country though. He wins almost every game he plays and earns a ton of cash in the process.

Had a few Poker Nights at mine over the past few months recently though, some pics on the personal pics thread.

I became pretty obsessed with poker a few months ago after watching a Stu Ungar documentary. Ended up watching quite a few WSOP final tables, including Stu's second and third wins. Never played it though.

I used to play Texas Hold 'Em quite a lot when it was a hype here a couple of years ago and I've also read some books about tactics, statistics and stuff like that.

I've never been brilliant at it and I've probably lost more than I've won (because I always used to drink during games, which made me kind of a "maniac" at times), but it's always fun to play it with some friends or in a pub.

Now we're playing other card games, though, like "kleurenwiezen", which is a Belgian card game that requires more strategic thinking and less gambling and bluffing, which I like better.

Poker has a charm to it, though. You need guts and brains to win it and there's always a lot of drama. I always keep watching when I randomly see a game on TV (and I used to regularly watch the world series, late night poker and stuff like that). Great entertainment.

I played online professionally for a couple of years about 6-7 years ago. Built up from coming second in a big free roll and played Texas and limit hold 'em daily. Played lots of tournaments and SnGs for a while but didn't like the variance.

Never made a lot of money but paid the bills for a few years. Ended up stopping due to stress - would have a day where I won $800 and think "that's fair because I'm better than most people" and then lose $500 the next day and be close to tears. Got too much for me.

Have gone back to it a couple of times and can usually still win but it's not like it used to be - too easy for people to find books that teach them how to break even so even at low stakes you have five people trying to fight over the money from the one guy at the table who doesn't know what he's doing.

Paying the bills is pretty good. I guess you were playing at least $1-2.

At no limit I think I only got to 0.50/1 but did play 1/2 on capped tables for a while. Even at those stakes you could make a basic living if you played enough hands. I'd play 6 tables of 6 handed or 12-15 tables of full ring at once.

On limit tables I think I got to 2/4 four tabling 6 handed. I always preferred limit over no limit and whilst they were far less profitable if I always played with bonuses and/or rake back I did ok.

Played last night, my normal £15 game, came fourth and got £30, not much but at one point I was on 2,300 chips (start with 26/7k) and the shortest stack with about 15 still in, so I was pleased to get something back.

Bump!
Getting super into it these days, the online scene sucks in the states now with the strict regulation. I prefer live though. Anyone have any must read books?

gandalf26
03-29-17, 01:30 PM
Yeah read Super System back in the day and a couple of others, played very heavily online from 2007-2010, since then used to travel to the nearest Casino(sub 90 minute drive) a few times a year though I've stopped last 2 years or so. Play online a couple of times per year but it's gotten very hard, everyone is solid. Had a few solid online tourney wins, 1st prize anywhere from $2000-5000. Want to go to Vegas at some point though.

My worst bad beat story

Casino in the UK, drunk maniac sits down with £1500-£2000 ($2000-$3000), everyone else has on average £400($600). Game is dealers choice, switching between PLO and NL Holdem.

The maniac has been playing every hand, dominating the table, everyone waiting for a hand to take him on, he loses puts more money down, busts a couple of people etc, this goes on for 2+ hours, EVERYONE wants a seat at our table but NO ONE is leaving.

Finally I get dealt AdAxJd5x at PLO and I fire out pot bet after his standard every hand raise, I start hand with £450, he starts with £2000ish. Myself, Maniac and 1 other guy see flop. Flop is a mother****ing DREAM, of Ax Qd 5d, giving me the nut flush draw and 3 aces, I hold the nuts( poker term for best possible hand at the moment), of course maniac bets, other guy folds and I pot again not leaving too much behind, maniac looks at cards for a good 2 minutes with drunken eyes and calls. Turn is a 7x, everything is fine, I still have the nuts, so I go all in and he quickly calls and shows........J569, so he has been calling his dead 2 pair and has hit a gutter straight draw on the turn, his only outs are 3 non diamond 8s, my heart is thumping out of my chest, at this point in time my bank account was worth about half the pot. Dealer turns over the mother****ing *********** 8 of clubs, I nearly throw up all over the table, get up and walk out and drive home. Pot was around £1000 ($1500). My hand was a 99%+ favourite on the flop.

Had to share this gem. New levels of Degeneracy reached by this guy.

Had been in Iraq for about a yr, this is mid to late 2004 on a ****ty forward operating base aka no girls, nothing to do. I had been playing holdem since '99 so hadthe bright idea that since these jagoffs all had at least 20 or 30k in the bank id donk em off all of it in our downtime. I order chips and cards and put out the word that we are gonna start playing holdem, cash only. There were atms on the main airbase about 20 min from us and whenever a squad would have to go there all the boys would throw their ATM cards and pin numbers and max withdrawal w whoever was going. Needless to say, by the time i got the chips we had a helluva lotta cash. Now i was a sgt, the other guy that knew how to play was one rank above me. The rest were just clowns that had some idea how to play but sucked. Long story short, im up about 4k. Ive gotta take a helluva **** but the actions juicy and i cant pull myself away. finally im on the button and announce that after this im running to the latrines to drop duece.

Naturally i pick up a hand. Dont remember what. Me and the guy who outrank me get it all in preflop. Theres like 7k in the pot but im gonna burst. My turdcutter is literally winking in anticipation of letting this massive **** fly.i say " i gotta go, tell me what happens". The villain aka guy outranking me, says if i leave the hand is mucked. Im like ****. Goes down to river. i flip. He wont turn his cards over hes just giggling watching me quiver. Im thinking i won and he is being a dick. The dude turns his hand. He had called my 4k shove w pocket 2's. Flopped trips. Rivered quads. Spent what must have been 3 minutes slow rolling me.

I screamed **** in a voice i cant explain, opened the door and literally ran for my life to latrines, which was about 200 meters away through deep ass pebbles, get to the toilet, dance in place unbuckling my pants, SLAM toilet seat up, turn around and am lowering my buns to the rim of the toilet w turds already SPILLING out of my ass. Imagine my surprise when i realize i threw the lid to the toilet up too hard in my frantic state and that it had immediately fallen back closed whilst i was turning around. The shock of having lost 4k in cold hard cash (on a soldiers pay) and now being steeped in my own turds was... Surreal. I can still remember the feeling of those piping hot turds being squeezed beneath my ass and it makes me gag.

Anyway. I ****ing clean myself and get back to the game. Even though i only bought in for about 200 bucks i still considered that 3-4k lost mine. I just CANT get this guy in a pot w me and we r **** talking like crazy. no one knows about the latrine saga btw. Somehow we r talking about getting mortared and rocket attacked at random on the base. I tell him ill give him 2:1 that we get mortared or rocketed TODAY. Hes like pfft. Ill give YOU 2:1 we DONT. We have a third guy thats his rank hold my 2k and his 4k. The deal is that the bets over at midnight. This was at about 7. Im living in a connex which is basically a shipping crate PRAYING we get rocketed. It gets to be about 11 and im dying inside at this stupid bet, how i could lose 4k to DONKS and then ride 2k that we get hit by the ****ing rocket man. LIGHTBULB!!! I have a 40mm grenade launcher on my M4. Ill zip one of those ****s into the field in the middle of the base and presto change-o ill be up. But then i think ahhhh theyll hear the discharge or ill kill some bonehead i didnt see, whatever. So then i think HEY we have these burn pits where we burn all the trash etc. They are always ablaze. Ill throw a 40mm grenade in there, haul ass and be back by our quarters by the time it burns enough to blow.

I go to the pit. Look around. Toss TWO 40 mm grenades in and run back to connex. Im in my cot, thinking anytime now. Its been twenty minutes. ****. I have a couple of m67 grenades, real deal frags, that i stole from the ammo dump where we take siezed weapons. There was a whole crate and i think i snagged 4.

So now im ****ing nerve wracked. I know if i toss the m67 frags in the burnpit ive got 5 seconds to get my fatass outta there or either be ****ed up or have my squad leader be super suspicious that i did it. Im like **** man what to do. I go by the pit. No ones around i pullout a frag. I think about it and am like frags arent THAT loud. Why go through this and no one hears. I pull out a second one. I pull both pins. I flip both thumb safeties off, and at the last second hesitate realizing i cant let the spoons pop off and be recovered or the gigs up. One last look to be sure no one sees and i threw those ****s straight in the fire.

Now many times in my life have i done ****ed up ****. Many times have i been trying to run from something or someone and been laughing so hard i could barely put one foot in front of the other. This was NOT one of those times. Those two frags and those two 40Mm grenades on that quiet night...*******. I was about to stop running so i wouldnt be suspicious but people started pouring out hauling ass for the bunkers so i just went with. The sgt i was in the bet with apparently saw me coming from that area and actually asked me if it was by me. I was like "hell yeah so ****ing close". He paused for a second, i was sweating balls, and he says" mother****er thats what u GET for betting we take incoming, i dont care. Was your money anyway".

Swore i wouldnt play like games like that again. Not two weeks later we have 200 dollars a piece on who can shoot a 40mm grenade closest to themselves, while making it explode AND not getting hurt. They take like 14 meters to activate. The very first moron shot it CLOSE and caught an amazingly large piece of shrapnel in his own leg. Was sooo good. That game ended quickly. No monies were exchanged.

Just been to Vegas for 5 days and put in a solid shift of low limit $1-2, and $1-3. Played in the Aria, Bellagio, Caesars Palace and my own hotel Excaliber twice.

Won money every day +$100 first 2 says, then +$300 next 2 and last day was +$400 for a nice $1200 week.

Last day I turned $500 into $1240 and took a nice pic of my huge stack (now my Facebook cover). However lost a pot after that and only cashed 900.

Lost about $400 gambling in casino and spent about $800 so came home with around what I took.

Games were quite soft really, I reckon if you are competent you could do OK over there.

Expensive place though.

Sounds like fun, although I'm surprised they spread games with those small stakes. In a lot of places they don't even bother with limit games. They'll only play no limit.

We host a poker game once a month or so at my house. Mostly for fun with a $10 or $20 buy in and tourney style - usually no limit hold em.

I get to Biloxi 3 or 4 times a year and will play in tourneys there but nothing ever high stake. I have won a few and cash out about 50% of the time. Most everyone there plays the same, they like to go all in early with a singleton Ace and any other card. It usually winds down to the same 10 to 15 players I see there every time I go.

I like the game, but the social aspect is what draws me in.

I also like to play Craps a lot, I only win about a 3rd of the time and break even about a 3rd - but when I do win its usually a good amount of $$, for me anyway. My wife loves slots and does fairly well at it, and of course the comp points, free rooms and buffets - at the end of the year it is usually a wash money wise, but I am cool with that because its like a paid vacation.

Funny, Scarlet Pearl is the only casino I've not been in on the coast. I hear it's very nice, though. And they treat their employees great: good pay, good bennies.

I don't guess that any of the poker rooms do that well here on the coast. Everyone likes to throw their money away in the slots.. And once the State lottery gets in, it'll probably take a lot away from the casinos. I don't know how the sports books are doing. Probably pretty well.

Went and played at Harrah’s Cherokee on Saturday. $1/3 NLHE cash game. They limit the buyin to 100x bb.

Played for about 7 hours and did well. The only serious misstep was running a semi-bluff on the hottest guy at the table. Every hand I turned over that day was big and the guy calls me down with pocket aces when I bet all three streets.

My mistake. Recent experience shows people will call down with any pair, so I should know better.

Technically lost money if you count the $40 in gas and money for drinks that you now have to pay for.

I use to go to local tournaments up until about 10 years ago I think? Won twice. I’m not the greatest, but it’s pretty easy to figure out betting habits with some people. And then there are the ones who will make wild calls with lawful odds to win the hand.
And then they pull it out and they act like they made the greatest call ever.
Man, those were fun times.

I think the $1/3 is definitely beatable, it’s just a matter of if my bankroll holds out. Betting/gambling doesn’t appeal to me, but poker is fascinating 🤩

Today’s trip was unsuccessful. Death by a thousand cuts. Only made 1 big mistake. My pkt QQ vs another guy’s KK. No overs on the flop, yadada.

Just a day of never making hands when people don’t fold any pair.

Gonna stop for a while. Played well yesterday and just got unlucky. I didn’t start with a $6k bankroll, which is what a standard $1/3 strategy would require. Hard to fade luck with essentially a 3 buyin bankroll.

Looking to get back in by the end of the year when Danville opens up. The 1 hour drive will be a lot better than 6 hours in a car just to play.

Last two weekends have been good. Essentially two double-ups. Game selection is a golden rule and becoming more and more apparent. You don’t have to be a good player, just better than the player you’re in a hand with. Feels like a lot of people come to dust-off money at $1/3. Last week was the first time the sportsbook was jumping (college football) and it is right next to the poker room. A lot of players seemed more interested in the games and cashing a ticket, than paying attention to the cards.

Edit on 9.7.24

Last week was a complete meltdown. Anytime you are at a table with a guy wearing a cayman head as a necklace, with a pyramid of chips…remember that table selection is a priority. Dusted two buyins getting beat by “one hand better”.

This week was better. Even though I didn’t participate, all of NC was lined up to buy sticky on the reservation. As far as card playing…When you raise, call the rr from AA w/ AQ and the flop come KTJ 👀

Bet 1/3 pot, AA rr to 4xs, you rr allin, they snap call…Somebody needed more than one rack when they left the table today. All on a bankroll from vacation money.

Have never played, and don't know anything about it. When they have poker scenes in movies, and show the cards, I never know what the hell it all means. I suppose the picture ones are better to have than the number ones, or something.

I was never any good at it. I was good at a game called Auction or 120s which I played as a kid and young man.

When I was in high school as seniors some of us got to school almost an hour before it started because of the bus schedules. So we would set in the cafeteria playing a poker type game called Guts, replayed for good money too. It was played with two cards dealt down to each player with an ante say like a dollar, no wildcards. On a one, two, three count everybody held their card in one had horizontally to the table and at three anyone he did not drop their cards was in. All the losers who staid in had to match the dollar amount on the table. Anybody play that?
