I'm making this thread mostly for my fellow commentators, so we can have an easier time picking a movie. Raul's DVD thread is extremely helpful when I'm planning a commentary with him, so I'm following suit. To my fellow commentators, I also have Netflix and Hulu.
I recently got rid of most of my movies, for various reasons, including the majority of my collection of Criterions (I used to have about 100 Criterions, maybe a few more than that), but I still have a good amount of films, I feel.

I just added my movie collection to my signature, since you said you find it nice to be able to see what people own if you want to do a commentary. :)
It is 90% complete, but I'll update it soon... And on another note, if we plan the commentary in decent time, I'll be able to find a copy of whatever film we might choose, in less than an hour - 30 minutes if all goes well - so it's not like my movie library is the only stuff we can watch for commentaries, but it's a great thing to have. :up:;)

I can personally only vouch for Who Can Kill a Child?, it's a great movie, but it's less exploitative than most exploitation films.
I have The Mack on vhs, I bought it for like 50 cents a couple years ago.

Between that and Thriller: A Cruel Picture you'll have all you need to see where Kill Bill's 'inspiration' comes from.

Don't worry I have junk too. Chuck and Larry, Fun With Dick and Jane, Traffic, Morning Glory, etc. etc.
I still like arthouse, but I have a newfound love of grindhouse/exploitation. Why? Because I'm a style guy, and that stuff was often incredibly stylistic, I've found. It's also just fun. Live a little, buddy.
Anyway, for some reason the trash really appeals to me.

I just got into collecting heavily this past year. Have spent a bit too much, but the collection is still in it's baby stages. In a year or two it might be something somewhat impressive.
I really need to get more Criterions, only have Summer Interlude and All that Heaven Allows at the moment.

Yeah I did that for my DVD collection like six years ago, had about 50 titles. I made the horrible mistake of trading them in at MovieStop. I got seriously ripped off lol. :mad:

I really want to build a good blu-ray collection, my only worry is that a newer and better format will emerge in the future.
I have a feeling the next step will just be having a digital collection, but who knows.

Violent Professionals is a film I've wanted to see for a while, I think. I think it's one of the trailers I saw on one of those grindhouse trailers discs one.
Yeah, it seems there might be some good gems on that set. I think it'll have been worth the price.

That's a real shame about Stone which would be a good film to watch right now what with all the Fury Road talk. It often feels like the godfather to the original Mad Max film, and also co-stars Hugh Keays-Byrne who gives another oddball performance.
I Drink Your Blood is a funny Romero knock off with cut rate gore effects and the lovely Lynn Lowry from Davey C's Shivers . It's an oft mentioned exploiter that doesn't really live up to it's 'classic' reputation. I say there's better stuff out there to be going on with.
Looks like you've been adding a lot of films close to my heart. I also recently picked up that blu ray edition of Ms. 45. Had a bootleg of the French dvd release for years so it's great to own a legit copy at last.
Not seen that much Jess Franco stuff - only Vampyros Lesbos (which is rubbish, but has one of the coolest scores of all time), Venus In Furs, Jack the Ripper, Wanda, the Wicked Warden (which was marketed as an Ilsa movie because of Dyanne Thorne), and Oasis of the Zombies which rivals Zombie Lake as one of the worst movies of all time.
Anyway glad to see you're enjoying these and don't feel like you've wasted your money.
If you like the Pinky Violence stuff then also check out Shunya Itô's three* original Female Prisoner: Scorpion movies (I like Meiko Kaji even more than Reiko Ike). There's also Bohachi Bushido: Code of the Forgotten Eight, and Zero Woman: Red Handcuffs - some of the very best there. ;)
[EDIT]*There's a fourth Scorpion movie Grudge Song also starring Kaji but with a different director. It's ok, but not as good as the first three.

I do intend to buy the Female Prisoner: Scorpion films, but a lot of these exploitation films are rather expensive and/or you have to buy second-hand. So I'm going to wait a little bit.

Four of the Apocalypse
I bought this for the Trash Vault. JJ and I really want to do a Fulci spaghetti western next, and this looked possibly the best out of the two we were looking at, plus it's by Blue Underground, so I went for it.

Switchblade Sisters
Recommended by Quentin Tarantino. :D I don't know much about it, but it was cheap and I liked the girl-gang stuff in Girl Boss Guerilla, so I went for it.

+ rep for The Great Silence and Switchblade Sisters which are both great in their own way. I also have both on dvd and predict you wont be disappointed with either. I was actually going to recommend Switchblade Sisters to you as a solid cheap purchase (at least it was when I last looked). Another classic from Jack Hill that predates the cycle of gang films that includes The Warriors and The Wanderers.
I've seen quite a lot of Fulci but not Four of the Apocalypse despite my love of Euro westerns. Have heard it's pretty nasty, depraved and grueling which shouldn't surprise anyone familiar with the director's work. Let me know what you think because it's been on my radar for years and I'll pick up the dvd cheap. Incidentally my favourite Fulci is The Psychic aka Seven Notes In Black which I heartily recommend seeing as you've already seen and enjoyed Zombi 2, and The Beyond . :)

Oh good, glad to hear Switchblade Sisters was worth the purchase. I'm looking forward to The Great Silence quite a bit, too. Corbucci seems great and it has the always fascinating Kinski in it.

So I've now got more than enough horror and exploitation to last me a while. Time for some different stuff. And since I had a transcendent rewatch of Take Shelter tonight, I decided to go ahead and buy the rest of Jeff Nichols small filmography. I have seen Mud before, and dug it. Shotgun Stories is a blind buy but I've heard good things.

I definitely need to see Shotgun Stories! I really liked Mud as well, and I own that one too. Looks like I generally love what Jeff Nichols does, so let's see if Shotgun Stories is great as well. I'll look forward to your thoughts once you see it! :up:

Anyway, I had been meaning to get some more Mike Leigh, so it's about time I do that. I've seen Naked and Happy-Go-Lucky, and loved both. I imagine those are probably his two most polar opposite films, considering one is so bleak and misanthropic while the other has this really charming, cheery character. Anyway, he's two for two and if he keeps impressing me like this he'll be a favorite director of mine in no time. Thanks honeykid for directing me in the right direction as to what to get.

Got these for cheap. A Fulci I have never seen and a slightly pretentious but nonetheless fascinating and moving Malick pic. I love it personally. And it has Jessica Chastain! So it's a win anyway.

The Tree of Life is one of those films I desperately need to see again. First time viewing it I was not in the right mindset or mood, although it's grown on me over time. If I see it again, there's a chance I might consider it a masterpiece.

What a buy, Swan! And I'm glad to hear you have nice words about it too. Yes, I'll admit it's slightly pretentious, but it's also so damn ambitious that it's hard to think anything else. The meaning of life itself, the way humans understand and interpret life, religion, science, love, innocence, guilt..... There is so much crammed into this picture it's unbelievable.
But one thing's for certain: it's a damn fine looking movie, stunning actually, and the Blu-ray transfer is top notch. A must own for that reason alone. :cool:
I don't think the old Terry boy is pretentious, but he does sort of "lose" himself in his visuals sometimes. But what visuals they are. :love:
Cheers guys. I agree with you Meds. It's not flawless but it's still beautifully made. I still can't believe it didn't get the win for cinematography at the Oscars, but I'm just now starting to realize the Oscars are kind of for sh*t. :p Took me a while, eh?
I'm excited to give it another go. I LOVED it both times I have seen it, despite it's flaws (mostly notably the pretentiousness).
I don't think the old Terry boy is pretentious, but he does sort of "lose" himself in his visuals sometimes. But what visuals they are. :love:
For me, the pretentiousness was most noticeable in the voiceovers. They bothered me a little bit, but it's really a minor criticism.

I still loose my head thinking about the fact that it lost the cinematography award... One of the biggest snubs ever.
So of these, I've seen The Conformist and The Long Goodbye. Been meaning to buy The Long Goodbye for a long time, because it's a great film. I bought The Conformist even though I don't really remember it, because I'm interested in further exploring general Italian cinema after loving all this Italian horror and spaghetti westerns. They're so stylish and cinematic.
Also bought Big Trouble in Little China, which I've never seen.

Ha! I also picked up that Big Trouble In Little China blu ray recently but haven't posted it yet. The film is super entertaining and just ripe for a commentary, I really hope you like it. Incidentally Kurt Russell is always great to listen to on commentary tracks and seems like a lot of fun in real life.
Sadly Fulci's The Black Cat is one of his lesser horror efforts in my humble opinion. Pretty sub-par and boring unless you're a fanatical Poe film completionist. I really must re-recommend The Psychic and his UK set giallo A Lizard in a Woman's Skin which I think is far cooler than Don't Torture A Duckling.
The Long Goodbye is another solid purchase, though not my favourite 70's noir. Love me some Elliot Gould though.

I bought The Black Cat because it was five bucks and I might just end up being a Fulci completist. :p My dad has A Lizard in a Woman's Skin, and I am looking to buy The Psychic based on your and a few others recommendation, but have not yet found it at a decent price.

So of these, I've seen The Conformist and The Long Goodbye.
I was going to say "... and you still bought them?!?!?" but then I went to the next page and saw you'd bought L'avventura.. :facepalm: Frankly I'd rather watch both The Conformist and The Long Goodbye again than L'avventura.
(Hopefully) ending the mega buying streak with a blind buy. Looks like something I might like.

L'Avventura is a great film, don't listen to HK for he knows what not he says.
I love L'avventura, raul! Excited to rewatch it.

Her is one of my all-time favorite films! Didn't know you liked it, that's awesome. I liked Moon but wasn't a huge fan of it.
I want to watch Upstream Color and Ex Machina, and perhaps Shogun Assassin and Sunshine - heard good and bad about the latter.
It Follows was rather awesome!

How is Thirst? I never heard of it until about 20 minutes ago when I noticed it on cable, then I notice it in your thread.
I saw it a long time ago, maybe last year, but I really liked it at the time. But, I think I like it a lot more than most people do. It doesn't seem to be incredibly revered except by me. I really loved it.

I'm not ashamed of having bought a Disney princess movie, but I will admit part of it was how cool the villain and dragon and stuff looked. That said, I'm prepared to get sucked into the romance if that happens. Kinda feeling romantic at the moment shut up

Sleeping Beauty is great and if nothing else, the sheer beauty of that wide CinemaScope 2.55:1 picture full of gorgous background paintings is enough to make it a worthy buy.
I wasn't fond of Kaguya though.
Just bought this. Can't believe I still haven't seen it. Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska in a Guillermo del Toro-directed atmospheric gothic horror? I'm totally down.

Did you ever watch In the Realm of the Senses? I've seen Oshima's Empire of Passion, and it's pretty darn good.
I've heard/seen countless great opinions about this film, including descriptors such as "nihilistic" and "an unbearable atmosphere". I'm looking forward to it.
