Any ideas on when the next "Movie Forums: Top <some type of film>" list will be created, and what the topic could be?
One area that isn't covered by the existing lists is foreign-language films, perhaps this could be an idea for a new list?

The Movie Forums Top 100 of the 60s is going on right know. I don't think any other new MoFo Top Film list will go on at the same time.

Oh, okay. What forum-category is that under? I expected such a list to be here in the "Movie Forums Site Stuff", but I don't see anything like that.
This would still be relevant once that is over.

The thread for the list would be in the Movie Reviews sub-forum.

Well, we've covered the decades, horror, animation, comic book films. How about a MoFo Top 250, a sci-fi top 100, an arthouse top 100 or an action/adventure top 100. I would post a poll but I sense a lack motivation on the forums toward the undertaking of another list at this point.
I've always wanted a MoFo Bottom 100.

I've thought about running that one, but I'm not sure when I'd start. I don't think it should take any from any of the Top lists, which are always done one at a time.
As for genre-based lists, I think the next one should be about documentaries.

I thought the plan was to redo the All Time Top 100?

I personally think that after the 60's list, we should do the 50's list and then the All Time Top 100 redo. After that we''ll finish up the decades. I personally think for the 20's list, it should be any movie made before 1930 as I think a pre 1920's list won't be a top 100 and more of a top 50 like the Comic Books list.
Yeah, this'll probably need to be voted on and discussed, but I agree that it makes sense to combine several early decades into one. Either 1930s and earlier, or 1920s and earlier.

I'll advertise the 1920's and earlier option! :)
I'm with Friendly Mushroom on this one! Finishing the decade lists first and then redo the all time one.
As for a foreign-language film list, I completely disagree with it...

I'm okay with a foreign list. I personally think if we do one, it should be in the far future.

There's over 100 foreign-language films in Ebert's list alone. :)

In the individual year, top list that started in 1960, then went to 1961 and so on, the number of foreign language films to English films was about 50%. It's also somewhere around 50% in most of the main Hofs that have been run.

MovieGal is statistically right. There are generally way more English speaking films than Foreign language films represented in the MoFo lists.
That's pretty logical, because we're on an American site here and because most people in "the West" watch more films in English than in any other language (in general), but I think it would be interesting to see a MoFo top 100 foreign films sometime in the future (or a few smaller lists with films from several important cinematic countries, like Japan, Italy or France).

Foreign list will be skewered though because whoever runs the list will go for as many lists as possible, but then it will lead to people who have explored all sorts of directors submitting lists, but also those who have only seen the most popular and accessible of films, and I think that this could hurt a lot of films.
By the way I think the 60s has a good chance of having a strong foreign representation, lots of great 'new waves' from the decade, that you'll know about if you read my thread :p
I don't think we should do a "foreign language" list. IMO the language a film is in is largely irrelevant and people should just watch films regardless. In a way it would help perpetuate the myth that "foreign" films are a separate genre when they aren't.
Happy to do films by country or area though - that would be interesting.

If a foreign list is done then it should be by demographic or language.
Edit: if they are a smaller country.. dont do a top 100.. but a top 50 or 25, whichever is needed.

Do a non-English animations list. :)
Also the top movies of the 1950's will have tons of foreign films because old movies and non-English movies are the same: obscure in general to (young) Westerners so I expect a ton of foreign language movies in the 1950's list, perhaps Seven Samurai topping it, for instance.

+ rep here, calling non-English foreign already implies implicitly that anything that's foreign is non-English (not true, a British film is foreign to Americans but it is in English), and also that everybody here is from English speaking countries (me, Cobbyth, Mr. Minio among others who post regularly are not).
Happy to do films by country or area though - that would be interesting.
Top Latin American movies list, I myself haven't watched a Brazilian film in 4 years already.

The 50s list is up next, but what about after that?
The 40s? Or if people don't like the idea going slow with the older decades then maybe a list that covers the 20s, 30s, and 40s in one countdown.
jiraffejustin
03-16-16, 08:19 PM
I think each of those three decades deserve their own list, but I'm curious how much participation we'd get if that's the way we went. But we usually have a list between decades list, or at least we've done it the last three times.

40s definitely deserves its own.
We should do a full '40s list whenever we do it. We can do non-English-language or cult (may be hard to define).
Something before the 40s, not really bothered what it is i just like having a bit extra time to watch movies from whatever decade.
Yeah, we should at least give the 40s a full countdown.

That probably depends on if it's "animated TV" or "anime".

Yes, it can be both, and it might have to be both to get enough participation.

Since anime series are animated series, yeah, anime would qualify.
I could come up with at least 15 Animated shows i love and could easily stretch it to 25 of ones i like. If we were to do it i'd watch a bunch of Anime though.
jiraffejustin
03-16-16, 09:26 PM
I know Guapo and Zotis would be good for 25 each and there are some other anime fans. And I'm sure others who aren't that interested could give us at least 10. If necessary, we could make the list a top 50 instead of top 100.
gbgoodies
03-16-16, 09:29 PM
I'm sure that I could come up with a list of 25 animated TV shows, but none of them would be anime.
Simpsons would top it. I'd have no idea where to place The Simpsons since i hate everything since Season 11 almost as much as i love the first 9 or 10 seasons.
