View Full Version : Vegetables only; no fruit diets - good idea?

What's your opinion on only eating vegetables instead of fruit? I hate sugar since it's anti-testosterone and promotes hypoglycemia, so the less of it I can get from anything in my diet the better. Meat, veggies, dairy, and starchy carbs like potatoes all the way for me, baby. With plenty of salt of course.

Don't see any disadvantage to this myself, seeing as pretty much all the vitamins you can find in fruit are also existent in veggies - not totally sure about antioxidant differences. Anyone have an opinion on this - here's hoping people don't impulsively reject it just because our moms always told us to "eat our fruits and veggies".

I live on that diet already, buddy.

Pulses like chickpeas, cannellini beans and haricot beans... with rices (sooo many types of rice out there) and pasta... beef or chicken only these days, I used to eat only minced beef but I've grown bored so have put chicken back on the menu...

Potatoes, carrots, peas. Any kind of veg apart from lettuce. Lettuce is boring as hell.

Haven't eaten fruit for near 15 years now as I have a funny reaction to it. Apples, pears and stuff give me terrible stomach ache. Not gut ache, actual stomach ache like I'm going to vomit.

However, citrus fruit can actually kill me if I eat it or drink it, like orange juice and stuff. Just handling citrus fruit burns my skin.

I do eat tomatoes again though. I weaned myself back onto them when my chillis and curries got a bit boring.
I used to come out in a rash with tomatoes but have managed to gradually get them back into my diet.

Nothing wrong with a no-fruit diet. I've done it for years.

That sounds like a great diet, you eat a lot more diverse veggies than me - I'm not even huge on most veggies myself, but I feel better getting some in my diet rather than relying on multivitamins alone.

Doesn't make me want to vomit, but I know what you mean. Especially sometimes with bananas. We are not alone in this.

I live mainly on pasta, rice, haricot beans, cannellini beans and chickpeas for my veggie type input.

Potatoes and the rest are a once in a while thing, maybe once a fortnight I'll eat tatties, carrots and peas and stuff. Mashed potatoes are a good substitute for rice or pasta when it comes to a minced beef chilli

Here's what happens to my skin with citrus.
I spilled my Daughter's orange juice on my hand... and thought I washed it off, but the ring that was on that finger must have had some residue of the orange juice on it... and this is what happened.

Lol you sound just like a friend of mine. So you don't eat any sugar at all?

I don't see anything wrong with it as long as you eat plenty of veggies, especially the green ones.... but how can you give up things like strawberries, raspberries, bananas and other delicious fruit?

I eat a little bit of it every now and then, but I keep it a really occasional thing - I just think of it the same as I do alcohol. I still drink the Blue Monster energy drinks pretty often (with only 6g of sugar per can) but want to give up on that eventually - though mainly because of the caffeine and the cost

Fruit are not that good to you anyway, they've got loads of sugar and makes your blood sugar levels rise.

All foods make your blood sugar levels rise. ;)

Fast acting carbs like sugars and refined grains will make the blood sugar rise (and drop) much faster than protein or fats.

My experience may not be indicative of anything, but I've noticed I have a lot more energy (and generally feel better) if I have a piece of fruit in the afternoon.

Yes, I know that. That has nothing to do with what I said.

Sugars are not all the same. Sucrose, white sugar is metabolized faster with more spikes in high-low blood sugars, than fructose which is sugars found in fruits. The key is to combine slow carbs (whole grain, beans) with fats (meats, dairy) and fast carbs (white sugar, white flour, white rice). That way your bodies sugar levels will stay more constant.

I love fruit myself I eat bananas and apples almost everyday.

most people don't eat fruit or veggies in america.

You mean cherry flavored soda doesn't count as fruit?

I had some pizza and coke today. I think that counts as a vegetable if i'm not mistaken.

Why don't you like fish? Fish is delicious.

I count fish as meat; I prefer monounsaturated fats (like in avocados) to polyunsaturated, because the latter's better for building testosterone (like saturated fats). So I try to eat fish in moderation rather than completely replace it for red meats.

I love fruits, vegetables, seafood galore, chicken, rice, pasta, cereals, cheeses, and yogurts. I think that is all. Oh, and I have no clue why, but I cannot stop eating those vegetable chips. Who are we kidding!?! It's not like they are healthy, but damn, I love them. So yes, at times I suppose crackers, chips, and popcorn show up in my diet. I am not big on ice cream, because it burns my throat. I have no clue why. I am like most people, though. I love cakes, pastries, etc . . . I honestly love preparing them more than I do eating them. Thank goodness for that.

I can cook, bake, grill, and deep fry pretty much anything. My father was a chef, and my mother was the oldest of ten, so she did a lot of the food preparation. Their skills obviously ran off on me. I do my damndest to turn my kitchen into whatever restaurant the family wants for the night. I actually go around with pad and pen, taking their food orders, just like they do in the restaurants. I freakin' love being a personal chef. It's become one of my hobbies. It's an inside hobby, though, so I can't take it to Nostromo's thread. Sorry Ace, for carrying on about this in here.

I have health issues like needing to make sure I get enough Calcium in my diet every single day. I also need Potassium, and Vitamin C. Vitamin D is needed simply because without it, our bodies don't properly absorb the other vitamins we take in. Of course, you can get Vitamin D from the sun. I also need B-12, for my Pernicious Anemia. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to get that outside of the sublingual meds, or shots. I am still looking into foods with the Potassium my body has trouble keeping. Fish is good, but I have to look into more of that, still. I didn't realize the dangers in that, until my last surgery. Without a decent amount of Potassium in our bodies, we can suffer from kidney, liver, and/or heart failure.

Um, back to your question, I always thought that avocados were a vegetable, but I only ever see them listed as a fruit. Here is a chart that shows there are just as many ways to get your vitamins in vegetables, nuts, meats, dairy, etc . . . as you can in fruit. The chart! (http://www.health-alternatives.com/vitamins-nutrition-chart.html) I personally love specific fruits, like cuties, which I'm sitting here eating right now. I also love Pomegranate, Black Grapes, Kiwi, Muscadine, Papaya, Blueberries, Blackberries, Raspberry, Strawberries, Cherries, and so on.

Damn, I apparently like this topic.

Yeah, not everyone's diet is gonna be identical. I try not to be OCD about it myself, and just make sure I'm eating real food. Getting too OCD about calories and nutrients isn't the way to go.

Only thing I'm in the realm of OCD on is the testosterone killers, that's why I no longer eat bread at all since finding any without soybean oil is damn near impossible.
