View Full Version : How Much Do Avatars Affect Your Views of Others?

Zotis
04-15-15, 12:30 AM
My lingering suspicion is they affect a lot. I think people by nature can't help but be a bit superficial and judge others based on how they look. I know I'm guilty of it too. It's really hard to see someone for who they really are and not just for how they look. So I do think it's important to have an Avatar that you really feel suits you. It may help the way others think about you psychologically.

Let me give an example. I had no idea Mr.Minio, with that cute girly avatar, and his pervy posts ;) was the same person as the one who used to have an avatar of an old guy with weird glasses on. It just occurred to me, and I thought, "wow that's the same person? He kinda seems like a completely different person now..."

What do you guys think?

My lingering suspicion is they affect a lot.

That's exactly what I was gonna say.

I think people by nature can't help but be a bit superficial and judge others based on how they look. I know I'm guilty of it too. It's really hard to see someone for who they really are and not just for how they look. So I do think it's important to have an Avatar that you really feel suits you. It may help the way others think about you psychologically.Camo was telling me the other day he thought my Jake Gyllenhaal in Southpaw avatar looked mean and made him feel angry. Gbgoodies told me she hated it and thought it looked like a loser. I never thought it was bad or did anything like that at all, but, that's how they felt and I acknowledged it. We can't help how we'll automatically react to something... and often, these avatars, as well as our profile banners, can be revealing about ourselves and our personalities or whatever we're going through... whether we realize it or not.

These things are definitely influential. Images are powerful. They can be more revealing than words.

Good question. I can only speak for me. It doesn't mean much to me, unless it says something. If someone has an avatar of a movie I love, I'll think positively of that person. But I can imagine it's important for other people.

My mind works very literally, so when I see someone's avatar, I connect them to that image.

For example, in my mind, the members of this forum include people like Jake Gyllenhaal, Orson Welles, Drew Barrymore, Joaquin Phoenix, Humphrey Bogart, George Clooney, etc. When I read their posts, I can almost hear the words in those voices.

However, because of this, it gets kind of confusing for me when people use opposite gender avatars.

I constantly think Honeykid's a woman because of his Drew avatars.

And it's not that I think he is Drew or sounds like Drew... I dunno. Sometimes he's a crossdresser or a transsexual to me. Female body, man's voice. It's probably why he's into Eddie Izzard.

I totally changed into this current smiling Jake avatar because I thought the other one was too black & white and too gloomy. I put that thing on after fighting with Sedai in "The Men of Our Dreams" thread (we were fighting over the hot guys) and I was probably just too moody to wear a smile then.

Interesting question, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I think it does but I think the tone of the posts creates the mental image in the long run more than the avatar.

04-15-15, 01:10 AM
It doesn't influence the way I view someone. I get an idea of them through their posts more than anything.

Zotis
04-15-15, 01:18 AM
These things are definitely influential. Images are powerful. They can be more revealing than words.

I've heard that images are the most effective form of communication, while words are the least effective.

One thing that freequently happens to me on forums in general is that I write things that can easily be interpreted in a harsh critical way. Sometimes I mean them very lightheartedly, but other people take offense and get up in arms.

It's happened a few times to a lesser degree here. But it has happened to much worse degrees on other forums. It's really hard to communicate a complex thought with just words. And I have no idea what other people think of me. I can't see what they see in my words, because I don't know if they understand the words I use the way I understand them. But I know everyone sees the exact same image that I see as my avatar.

sure it puts a spin on things.. just like if they type in all caps. makes it hard to only read the message they're posting and not take anything else away.

Think of it this way: our words here are what we're saying. Our avatars, however, are like our body language. No, you can't change your avatar for every post, but what you use for awhile can say something about yourself at that particular time.

That was funny about the walrus. Anyway, I use the words, what people talk about, to get an image of them. However, I prefer pictures of everyone. I think that, and their personality, the words they post, tell me plenty. We also have a thread somewhere where they are trying to get audios of everyone. That would truly help a lot. I have always been taken too serious because of my sarcastic/smartass personality. Trust me, I'm usually kidding. Yes, I said usually. ;)

I constantly think Honeykid's a woman because of his Drew avatars.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I truly am. My dog was a diabetic, as well. I will try to get a photo of her up soon. She died at the age of roughly 9 to 9 1/2 years of age. Vladimir became diabetic age 2. How old was your dog when that happened?

It happened to mine because of a terrible vet. recommended to me by my trainer and breeder .. dog was getting yeast infections and the vet just kept injecting him with steroids until it triggered his diabetes.

I've been thinking about hosting an audio commentary one day for the doc I was.
I figure most people here have probably never done a live chat with someone from a movie while watching said movie. That experience has got to be worth something. I could answer questions and provide insights into everything as it happens.

Frankly I've seen the thing way too many times I have no desire to watch it again but I'm willing to give a little back to the mofo community. Maybe it'll be fun if enough people are interested in watching.

She was roughly six, and I had a horror story with a vet, as well. I named him Dr. Kevorkian. I found out the rough way that if any animal has a life long health problem, if they have to have medicines, or whatever kind of treatment for the rest of their lives, he lies and says that they have kidney failure, or whatever, and talks you into putting them asleep. The bastard got my cat. All he had to do was keep giving me pills for his thyroid, but he told me he had kidney failure, so there you go. Well, when my dog was seriously sick, I took her there, and he told me she had liver failure. Problem was, he hadn't run any tests past that regular blood test, and I knew it, so I told him that he should run a test to make sure. Nope, she didn't have it. Then he said she had some sort of cancer. There was a third disease that he said she had, but I forget what that was. It was obvious that he was full of it, so I lied, and said I would take her home for an over night goodbye. He left the catheter in her. He was that ready to kill her. My sister removed it. The next night they called asking me where she was, and I told them off. That felt great. She lived another 3 1/2 years. That's pretty good for a diabetic with liver failure, cancer, and only God knows what else.

I also had to do the shots twice a day, but I didn't know how to test her sugar, which I hated. I had to pay the vet to. Another vet, of course.

foster
04-15-15, 03:49 AM
The vet was reluctant to "let" me start testing his blood sugar. Because if you do that they stop getting as much of your money. It's really simple to do, costs less than $1 each time. test strips get thrown away after use

that is absolutely terrible about your cat

It was for practice. The first time in a wig and makeup I did not look nearly that good.

That picture I posted was the second time I was ever in makeup.. the difference some professional help made. I was there for lessons.

Destiny, at first I thought you were a guy and had a picture of yourself for your avatar haha... it was different than the one you have now

Yep, same man, different picture. That's a younger picture of him there. I think the difference is, no one much knows who he is. When we did the "Movie Theme" game, and I used a man's photo, it was someone like Kurt Russell, etc . . . which is a dead give away that I'm not him. I think then people paid more attention to my name, and realized I'm a woman. Plus, with the avatars up above that I used for a long time, it was very obvious I was a woman. The man/Jack Carlson is now a retired pro hockey player. One of the brothers that they made the Slap Shot movie about. The brother that didn't get to be in the movie, because he was already going pro. He is known as one of the toughest fighters in hockey history, and now he's a referee breaking up the fights. I just thought I'd share that. :)

I'm at work so can't listen to you all, but I've heard Miss Vicky's voice, she has a lovely tone to it. I wish mine was like that. I've still got traces of a Liverpudlian accent which gets stronger if I'm mad, and like most Liverpudlian women my voice gets higher the more mad or emotional I get :D...not great

I do think avatars affect the way you see someone, subconsciously anyway, specially if you've been around a long time and have got used to people. I loved your black and white Jake pic you had in the last few days SC, it was sexy and moody. I like your avatars as JG is a handsome lad.
I like HK's Drew ones too as she always strikes me as being a bit of a wisecracker herself, like him. Liked Nebbit's big boobed ladies she used to have cos they were fun like I imagine she is.

after a while i feel you get to know the poster rather than associate them too much with their avatar. That is, if you've taken the time to try and understand the person through reading the spirit of their posts. Avatars can help, images can be more powerful than text... even better though, the right images along with the right words. I mean, that's filmmaking → imagery, concise words, music, coming together

Avatars can be important for a while, although up to a point i don't think they're *as* important. Gunslinger could change from his long time Robert DeNiro avatar, and he'd still be the same Gunslinger (to me). Same with Sexy, or Miss Vicky, or Honeykid, or Camo, or Swan, or cricket, or Capt Spaulding, etc, etc.

Here is the first avatar i used, for the first year i was here

http://oi57.tinypic.com/6jlmk3.jpg

i liked it bc it might just be my parrot talking for me. Plus the movie that first made me love movies was Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), so a pirate fit as one to start with

Then i went through an invisible phase

http://oi57.tinypic.com/330r8yp.jpghttp://oi61.tinypic.com/s4apgk.jpghttp://oi58.tinypic.com/35k1qnk.jpg

i didn't want to be invisible forever, although i reserve the right to become invisible again when i want

now i'm Michael Myers for the slash vault. i don't think an avatar can completely define a person tho, maybe just show a glimpse

Yeah, in the meantime I learned who he is, from the 'men of our dreams thread' :D and also the fact that you love him.
My previous knowledge of hockey consisted of the names of two NHL teams.. The Blackhawks and The Sabres lol

I don't know how many avatars I've had, I used to get a new one each week because I played the movie theme game. My very first avatar was the angry little snowman from Pixar's Knick Knack. Then a few days later, I noticed that everybody had Simpsons avatars (because they were playing the theme game, which I didn't know at the time) so I switched my avatar to this:

http://rockalittle.com/the_simpsons_do_rumours.jpg

And then found out about the game from Sir Toose.

For the last couple of years now, I've just stuck with Joaquin avatars. I've tried changing to something else a few times, but it just never seems right to me.

I didn't have an avatar for about the first 5 years I was here. Maybe a little more? I don't know, when did Destiny convince me to play the movie theme avatar game?

I remember you having Drew before you played, because I teased you about giving her up long enough to join in with all of us. You finally did, and of course your choice was a drew theme. Also, there were many theme choices where you could still pick a drew movie. You really lucked out there. I wouldn't be able to. Jack's not a movie star.

If we don't stop bringing up the theme game, Nebs is going to get depressed again. She sure loves that thing. I actually took it down from the important threads in the game section. Don't tell her that.

I just think the battery is dead... I should order a new one.. but who cares... I got a new lap top... lol

I will soon... that way I have a backup if something happens to this one...

Do you have a charger cord? If so, and it still doesn't fire up, it is either the cord, or the laptop itself. Our cord defected, so it wouldn't charge the laptop. We first thought it was the battery, too.

Cute walrus, foster! Uh, I mean dog. :D

To comment on this topic, as I wrote when posting in the mofo personal pictures thread, you have an image of a person beforehand and when you see how they really look like you tend to get "confused" and maybe even disappointed that they didn't look like you thought they would. But after a while, you get used to and accept whatever a person might look like, and it's all good.

But as a few people have pointed out, it's the way we post/write and the way we act that truly defines our virtual persona. The avatar though, can add some kind of detail or characteristic thing to it though, but in the end it's all about how we post aka who we really are as persons, to some degree or more.
