game changer - a newly introduced element or factor that changes an existing situation or activity in a significant way.

The key term here is significant. How many times a day do you hear about some new item or method that is a game changer? Nowadays when I hear this term, it's a red flag that I need to move on to something else.

No, Eddie was great. He's OK now. He still has his moments. The modern use of the word "awesome" is what has to go.

The overuse of the term "not so much." It's been used for a long time, no doubt, but in the last few years, it's gone overboard in use, from every other friend on Facebook to nightly news anchors. Just use some slang like, "nah!" or "not like you'd assume" or "not the amount you'd think, you jackass!" :)

The term "amazeballs"----I've been hearing this for several years now, and I even heard a major news network anchor use it the other day and the fact that I hate this term and I dislike the anchor made me doubly sick.

The one that annoys me is politicians saying 'look' . Tony Blair started it, then all the rest of them do it now. I think it gains them a few milliseconds of thinking time while they consider another way of not answering the question.

Whereas some people think that's totes amazeballs and totally awesome. :D You won't be surprised to know that I'm with you on this one. The first time I heard a news reader (US) say "awesome" I think I gave up.

Yep, that's very annoying. It's usually followed by "what we're saying/doing is..." then they go on to say what they wanted to say before they get around (occasionally) answering the question they were asked in the first place. By the time that's done there probably isn't enough time for a follow up question if they want to ask another of your questions.

Another Blairism is the 'thumb point punctuation' of a speech. So bloody annoying.

I can hear President Obama's voice in my head as I was reading that. I don't think I noticed it being a politician thing before you mentioned it. I have noticed him doing it though. I like the way he speaks so it has never bothered me. Great way to start an impression though, he does the thumb as well.

Bill Clinton did this, too, although a lot of times during the speech, then as a punctuation. It never bothered me too much because people on Saturday Night Live were making fun of him all the time and I couldn't take it too seriously. But I sure noticed it. :)

If I may temporarily keep it on a political slant, I've noticed that initializing the President of the United States to the shortened POTUS has reached an infestation point. I still sometimes have to stop and ask, "POTUS? What's that again?" And I'm fairly good at abbreviated phrases.

Sean, I really don't know. Believe it or not, I never watched The West Wing. Just one of those shows that I never made time for, despite family members and several friends urging me to watch.

As someone has already said, I think The West Wing brought this into the lexicon (though like you I didn't watch it so don't know) but it also fits in with the new century's obssession with acronyns and abbreviation.

Seriously, shove your lists up your butts. All your "Your-username-here's Top 50 films" or "Top 10 Fight Scenes" or "10 Reasons I can't Get a Date" lists need to die. Yes, I'm talking to all of you.

The only reason they exist is because people are too damn lazy to actually read an article anymore so sites like Buzzfeed make lists of lists of lists because they know the modern idiot only likes seeing things in 140 characters are less.

And, no, I don't think your ability to rank Citizen Kane and The Godfather is impressive. They're both great freaking movies!

In all seriousness, I freaking hate lists. If it helps, you all at least put more than one sentence into your listed items...

Raise your hand if you read every single paragraph about every single listed item in a list thread.

Now raise your hand if you are being truthful and you only read the listed items that you are interested in and skim the rest.

Also, how the hell do you number rank wonderful things? I love, love, love Back to the Future, Die Hard, The Empire Strikes Back, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. If I were to make a list of my 'top fifty favorite movies of all time ever' those would be on there, but how in the unholy **** am I supposed to number rank them? What are you talking about... I cant even make a top 25 list of films... because you cant compare a French film to an English film.. to a Danish film... nor a drama to an action to a horror... I would have to make top 10 list for every genre and every country... its too hard...

Here's what I think needs to be put on the shelf. Debates from people who don't do their research, state their speculations assertively while they're still processing them, and have no idea what they're even talking about.

I'm guilty of it too, and I'm trying not to do it. So yeah, I just think people should either not debate, or be willing to do research and not state their uncertainties so assertively.

There's a big difference between not being able to create your own lists, versus complaining about other people posting their lists.

I don't like making my own lists because I find it nearly impossible to rank my favorites, but I love reading other people's lists.

People like talking about the movies they love and a lot of other people like reading about what other people love. Looking at someone's personal top 50 or top 100 or whatever is a fast and easy way to get an idea of who they are as a movie fan. These threads are unobtrusive and clearly labelled. My problem is it's overrun the forums. Matt's personal list is not characteristic of the rest of our lists in any sense that could give you a generalised perspective. It sounds to me like you're just looking for confirmation bias by giving one example of a list you don't like. Are you trying to make people feel bad? Why not just keep it to yourself?

I mean to actually advocate that we should stop making lists even if they're all terrible, is incredibly ignorant. To actually try and advocate that they are all terrible is even worse. Would you stop doing something you enjoy just because one person in the world doesn't like that you're doing it?

First off, I'm pretty sure everyone has already forgotten my first post mentioned Buzzfeed. I don't only hate the lists that occupy every corner of the Movie Forums, I hate all internet lists equally.

Second, I've been a member here for quite some time and I spent tons of time going through all the endless lists in the Reviews section of these forums. I'm not generalizing one list, I'm poo-pooing them all. As of writing this there are 10 list threads on the front page of the Reviews sub-forum and a whopping four threads that are the title of a film that is being reviewed. Sheesh.

I'm not trying to take away your fun and I'm not advocating that you should stop making lists. However, I wish there were less of them. We really don't have to compartmentalize and rank every single thing, do we? Did we really need a Top 10 Battle Scenes or Top 50 Superheroes? Wouldn't those threads have worked just as well as "Battle Scenes I love/Share your Favs" or "Superheroes I'd love to see adapted for the big screen?"

Miss Vicky, I want to elaborate a bit more as to why I post on this site. I really love films, but more from an artistic appreciation perspective or as a means to escape. I enjoy talking about individual films, how they made me feel, what the artist was trying to say, things of that nature. I also love to talk about the more visceral experience of genre films or geek out with my inner fanboy about comic adaptations or Star Wars. Look at the last thread I started:

Here. (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=40406)

It got some attention, but clearly I should have named it "Ten real life stories that should be movies"

Also, I love to trash talk filmmakers I hate and pick fights with 90sAce.

The point is we make lists because it's fun. If you don't like it, that's no reason for us to do it any less. Not anymore. The neg rep system was the cause of endless problems pretty much the entire time it was running.

and I always get hung up on the number ranking thing, you have no idea how much that bothers me...

OK, I'm going to give the kid this one. If you dig around on this board, you will see that I've tried to do a favorites list twice in my past here. Long long ago. I barely started either one of them. Hell, I can't even do a top 25 favorite MoFos. I can't do that. I love too many of them the same. The best I've ever been able to do is give a number one favorite of these things. That's as far as it goes.

We need a sub-forum for "lists." :D

I'm giving him this one, too. Mainly because it's funny.

I keep hearing this and I'm afraid it's bollocks and I'll prove it.

Die Hard, The Empire Strikes Back, Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

There you go. Took about 5 seconds. :D

I love you, honey. That was so funny.

Did I just rhyme?

I'm liking Bouncing Brick:cool: He's got some good points, though he uses a sledge hammer to make those points! But what the heck, I kinda agree with this statement:
...We really don't have to compartmentalize and rank every single thing [in a list], do we?..: I've noticed that too, the internet is homogenized and condensed into a 10 second 'sound' bite with Top 10 things we should know, read, watch etc, etc...No one hardly discusses ideas at depth these days and I miss deep discussion.

But Brick, remember, you catch more flys with honey than vinegar.
Lists, Seriously, shove your lists up your butts... You do have a way with words:eek:

...and I always get hung up on the number ranking thing, you have no idea how much that bothers me... MovieGal said that too....I actually agree, there's no way I can make a top movie list, as I equally love many, many films. Sure Citizen Kane is great but is it my number 1? I could have a 1000 movies as number 1s.

So ya, I get that part about list. B U T on the flip side a count down list makes for some drama and so that's why it's used. I'd rather see a list than nothing at all.

Brick, if you really hate all the list on the internet, just wait tell you get older like me, then you won't care...you'll be thinking how time flies and stuff that once bugged the hell of you won't matter much.

Ranking favorites is difficult, but not at all impossible. I've done two personal lists and put together ranked lists for various MoFo Countdowns.

I pared down my lists and ranked them by asking myself a series of questions and deciding on positions based on my answers:

Do I like this movie more or less than the movie currently above it?
Does this movie have nostalgic value?
When did I last watch this movie?
How much desire do I have to watch it again?

Those of you hung up on ranking could also just do a personal list that isn't ranked. There have been plenty of those done as well.

Personally, I love making lists. Making lists is practically a hobby of mine. I do it all the time. I spend hours upon hours writing up reviews and contemplating the various qualitative features of this movie and that movie and thinking very carefully about how valuable they are to me and why I like them as much as I do. It's very personal. To criticise something that is that personal... It ticks me off a bit. It's just plain rude.

I accept that.

Also, I'm glad to see at least a little bit of meeting me in the middle. :D I want to know how many people here like the Buzzfeed style lists that have taken over the internet over the last 5 years. Take the lists out of these forums and base your opinion entirely on the click-bait list trend. I bet far more people are suddenly on my side.

Plus, CitizenRules, I would lose my troll cred if I was too nice.

Surely you should be able to safely operate a motor vehicle in the presence of bicycles? I'm not saying they don't/can't cause accidents, but only as much as other users.

Unless, of course, you're just having a moan. In which case, carry on sir. :)

Mostly a moan.

I always wait for a straightaway or a few hundred yards of vision.

Others do not and therein lies the rub. Impatient people pass recklessly and endanger themselves, the cyclist, and other lane of traffic.

In all seriousness, bicyclists have no business on a road with no bike lane.

Having to enter the @ (insert name of email provider).com when you sign in.

There has to be a solid reason for having to do this, but I am unaware of it. Is it a big pain? No. Does it decrease my quality of life? Doubt it.

I just find it surprisingly inefficient when I am on a certain email site, where I can only check the emails with its designated @____.com, that I still have to type it in. :)

If there is no dialogue or voiceover, no thanks. It makes it too hard to tell anything about the movie.

I've been stopped by a cop and warned that I can not ride my bike on the sidewalk or crosswalk. A bicycle by law has to ride on the road even if there is no bicycle lane. I don't know where you got the idea that bicycles shouldn't ride on the road without a bike lane. They can get a ticket for riding on the sidewalk.

These are "country roads" where there are no sidewalks and speed limits of 45-55 mph.

To me its the same as scooters (liquoursicles). Local laws state that they are only to operate in cities, 35 mph speed limit areas. People still drive them everywhere though.

Good or bad, it's a safety issue to be on roads with autos.

Wow, that sounds harsh. Where do you live that you can't bike outside of city limits? I just can't imagine a kid living in the country not legally being allowed to ride his bike around.

This is from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation:

"Rules of the road

As a cyclist, you must share the road with others (e.g., cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, etc.).
Under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act (HTA), a bicycle is a vehicle, just like a car or truck.
Cyclists:
must obey all traffic laws
have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers
cannot carry passengers - if your bicycle is only meant for one person

Riding on the right

You must stay as close to the right edge of the road whenever possible, especially if you're slower than other traffic.

Where you can ride

You can ride on most roads, except:
controlled access highways, such as Ontario's 400-series highways
across a road within a pedestrian cross-over - you must walk your bike to the other side"
