Hi MoFos.

Apologies for last night's spam attack. I saw, and deleted, the first wave fairly late, but at the time didn't think it would end up being so sustained. And unfortunately it all happened in that sliver of the night where pretty much all the mods are either going to sleep or not quite up yet. More unfortunate still, they came from wildly varying IP ranges, so the first couple of bannings didn't stop the ones that came after.

We're doing a few things in response to this. First, I'm expanding some of the mod tools so it's easier for them to wipe these out, because it was far too much of a burden on them in this case. A huge thanks to the mods (some of whom stayed up late to help fix things) for helping to staunch the deluge.

Second, human verification. I know Iro mentioned captchas in The Shoutbox, and we've used those in the past, but they can be broken. Awhile ago we switched to simple human verification questions ("what's the fourth letter in this site's name?") and we've had a lot of success with them, right up until last night. I've updated all three of the rotating human verification questions for now, and that might be fine. If not, I'll look into some of the newer methods available.

So, in summary: sorry! We've made a change to try to stop it, another to try to clean things up quicker, and if it happens again we'll go nuclear on the problem.

Thanks for bearing with us, and thanks for just moving everything into The Shoutbox. That was clever/amusing. :)

No probs. The Shoutbox became abit of laugh anyway so some good came from it.

Thank You to Yoda and the mods for doing what you can to try to stop the attacks. We know that you guys do everything that you can to prevent these attacks, and to stop them when they happen.

Any idea who was attacking, and why, do you think these were just random attacks?

That may be, but that was a full-force attack last night that felt like it was designed to take down the whole system. (It would have worked if it wasn't for the Shoutbox.) A few random links make sense, but that kind of attack from numerous accounts seems like something that was planned for some reason.

Apparently it happened last night at Rotten Tomatoes' forum. I looked over there and saw some threads that looked similar to what was posted here, but they didn't have it as bad as we did.

Yoda, there was a question last night about whether or not threads (or posts) would auto-delete if enough people reported them.

Is there any kind of auto-delete function built into this site, or would a mod have to manually delete any threads (or posts) that get reported?

Thanks for addressing this Yoda. I'm wondering if it would be beneficial to add a new mod who lives in the Pacific Time Zone to help address this? I'd be willing to help out just to get rid of late night spammers. I'm usually awake and online until midnight or so, which is 3:00 a.m. East Coast Time.

Thank you to the Moderators who worked to clean up the mess. Now I can go back to enjoying this awesome community. :D

Apparently this has become a sudden widespread problem. Another site I visit was shut down for 3-4 days last week from a spam attack, and the administrator over there said he knew several fellow administrators whose sites had been attacked.

There's no way for an admin to just delete all posts at once from a certain account? I know some sites have that feature.

We've got a one touch ban and clean button in everyone's profile. That's got to be it. I've never used it, but I'm assuming it's up and running. Who wants me to try it out on them to see if it's working? :D

Yeah, we have an option for it but it didn't function quite as intended. And there was a truly prodigious amount of spam, so the areas where it fell short were amplified.

We had another attack last night with different results. Tacitus quickly stomped it out and that was it.

I could give you a link for a free download of their album but then I'd have to ban myself...
