View Full Version : Project MoFo 2003 - Suggestion Thread!
You heard right. Fire some suggestions my way. I've compiled a rather formidable list for myself to mull over/explore already, but more ideas are always welcome. Since I'm toying with everything, now is THE time to put in a request.
And in case you were wondering, yes, fixing the favorite movies option once and for all is most definitely on the list.

Ideas - May be silly, but I'm being serious!
(1) how about analog clocks instead of digital? They look rather more pleasing on the eye.
(2) 'Mofo Awards' i.e awards for the best/worst threads, best avatar etc, on a monthly basis which gives out points to members in some kind of league table in which the winner gets a prize (image or otherwise). This might encourage more of a contribution (i'm not saying anyone's contribution isn't worthwhile already by that)
(3) A big mofo tag game! Someone starts to be it (by an image somehow put by their avatar stating this) and can only get out of being 'it' by answering a question or puzzle you've set. Then the person who is 'it' can choose who is 'it' next.......hmmm
(4) Square smilies!
(5) Mofo Police! Kind of like the admins but comedic! Have a 'jail'where if someone goes well out of order by using abusive language etc, then they go to 'jail' in which they have to do tedious english/maths lessons!
(6) Some kind of floating alert box in where you can be alerted by a sound/message if someone adds to a thread you have chosen to be alerted on. This is good for people who work away on their computer and want to keep up to date. It could be cool, as the alert could show the avatar and name of the person who has replied. ooooh and if new people come online, i.e buddies etc.
(7) Updated Movie news (basically 'borrowed' from the 'ain't it cool site' etc. Also links (if possible) to new movie trailers.
(8) Movie star Smilies! I'd love a little mel gibson 'cheeky wink' !
hmmm, I'll get back to you with more! I may have mispelled a few good times, but i'm quite drunk at the moment.
So, what do you think?
I like it! :D :yup:
I will try think and get some of my ideas up as well. :D
A floating and self refreshing "shout box" would definitely be nice.
still on the shotubox, a self refreshing "members currently online" so we know who we are not talking to :)
ps...movie star smilies...that's a GREAT idea

After watching the oscars I've had an idea to do with my number (2) Mofo Awards,
All the awards are based on polls throughout the month or whatever timeline and make it so only people who have say over 1000 posts or something can vote, that would be rather good.

so Yoda, what do you think of my suggestions, any feedback sir?
Sorry, was waiting for more suggestions before commenting.
Some of them aren't bad. I'll definitely be taking everything said here into consideration. Which ones I include will depend upon practical usage and time, primarily.

Add a thin film strip between the links [home, news, review, forums, et al] and the copyright notice. Possibly at the top, too. Very, very thin.

how about rankings for people who post?
like they have in supercars.net
i'm not a member of that site (i just like mine :yup:)....but my best friend is and i've seen that they have rankings
what fun that would be lol
hmm....
ok i'm done
Something like this? (http://www.movieforums.net/memberlist.php?s=&what=topposters&perpage=10)
Or perhaps somethin' else?

something else
like you post 1000+ and you get an official name
then 3000+ and you get a name

This isn't really a design suggestion, but please either find a way to automatically update the box office report or just get rid of it. It still has MIBII as the top movie of the week.
Newbies to the site who go there first would think the site isn't regularly maintained and might just leave.
Also, perhaps get rid of the dead wood: folks who have member names but have never posted. (That is, if someone creates a name but in six months still hasn't posted once, nuke 'em.) Other sites I visit do this and it really does streamline the members list and searches, etc. Plus, you get a more accurate count on actual participating members rather than ghost names.
And yeah, if there were a way for the shoutbox to function more like an IM window, that'd be cool. (But that doesn't sound easy.) Just seeing one shout at a time on the main window is often confusing, but I usually don't want to keep the longer shoutbox window open either.
Good luck with this project! And KEEP THE GRAPHICS, of course! They're too cool.
Damnitt, woman, whose side are you on?
Austruck
03-25-03, 03:10 PM
The side of truth, justice, and the American way.
I'm confused. Other folks give you these long laundry lists of things they want (peace in our time, the truth about whether Keanu and Tom are gay, the fifth season of The Sopranos on DVD), and you just say, "Okay" ... and then I mention things like the outta-date B.O. Report (which has an offensive name like "B.O. Report," did I mention that?), and you shrew out on me.
What do you expect from a proofreader? At least I've stopped proofreading your movie reviews here. Gimme a break! Sheesh. Criminy. Gahhh.

Hi Minion; You drunk Bast**d. Good to see you.
Who would want to change anything on this site? I think it's fine the way it is. If it ain't broke...well, you know the rest. Besides, Yoda is probably very busy.
However, since we're coming up with suggestions--I'd like to throw one out there. Is there any way to edit the Thread Title? There is nothing more embarrassing than writing a well versed chunk of rhetoric, hitting the "That'll Do Pig" button, and finding out you've misspelled the Thread subject and can't change it, leaving members who view your posts thinking you're a complete illiterate!
Austruck
03-25-03, 06:37 PM
Good luck on that one, r! I have yet to meet a forum site that'll allow you to edit the subject/thread name. But if anyone could do it, it'd be Yoda.
And, he's the one who asked for change suggestions. Otherwise, I'd have just slunk around peeved about the "B.O. Report" thing and mentioning it to him every six months or so....
:)
It would be nice to be able to use the editing tool/button in the shout box. I'm a terrible typist and have occisionally re-typed/re-posted another shout because I couldn't stand seeing a glaring typo.

How about movie crosswords ?
Yes, yes, the box office report will be updated regularly and such. I, uh, promise. Though now and then I may be busy enough to exclude any summary, putting up just the numbers.
Anyway, keep the suggestions coming, people. I'm more keen on modifications or addendums to already existing areas, as opposed to entirely new sections, for the record. Much more workable. :)
What about updated the trailers section?
Well, yes, updating each section regularly is part of the plan. :) I'm referring more to features. Regular updates go without saying.
Anyhoo, the trailer section's functionality will also be expanded. There'll be a way to report links that break, as well as the capacity to link to different resolutions for each trailer. If anyone else has any other ideas on how to improve the Trailers section (or any other section), please don't hesitate to post them here.
Even small, purely convienent changes will be considered -- in fact, they're one of the things I'm hoping to make a lot of, as this is more a re-working of the site than it is a replacing.

Please try to figure out why the cookies don't clear when you try to log out. I have this problem on every computer in the house, so it's not my computer. But when Gracie gets on here before I do, she ends up logged in and the only way to get her outta the system and get "me" back is to delete all my internet cookies.
Sucks!
There's really no way to plausibly fix that without completely wiping out the customization here, unfortunately, which will happen eventually...but not very soon.

Wow, let's not tell Gracie, though. ;)
CONGRATULATIONS. I can feel the planets aligning even as I type this. Or maybe it's just indigestion.

(if i understand your query correctly, these should help)
why not setup your pc to have different user accounts....
or, when you log onto mofo and windows asks if you want to save the name and password, say no...that way each time you open mofo forum hompage, no one will be automatically logged in

Nahh, I like the idea of getting rid of Gracie better. :D Just kidding.
Both your suggestions would work, but (a) the MoFo site doesn't seem to give you the option of not saving the ID/password when you log in, and (b) I'm not going to set up an entire user account just for one web site glitch. We had two user accounts on here for a while and that was just a nightmare in terms of which programs did or didn't work anymore under one account or the other.
I'll just have to banish her to the computer in her room. After all, that's what it's there for! (Plus, she leaves fingerprints on my monitor screen.)

You know that is not a practical option, besides the task of creating the damn thing, it would slow things down and if you have a problem with spelling then type your post into Word or something that already has a spell checker.

 YEAH! and while were at it we can send jellybeans to the ones that behave good.
So when are you going to impliment the changes Chris? Will the site be down for a few days?
PS The idea about the post count total was cool but it sort puts people into status classes.
BTW I just got this one how about making mp3's a valid file upload format. Its smaller then Wav.

Hello,
I'm not sure if this has been said before, I glanced over the posts and didnt see it. (but I may have missed it.)
Ok so I hope no-one gets mad at me...... it's just i'm not too happy with the colour scheme! It's just that the scroll bars are black and I can't see the little bit I need to move so I always and up zooming up and down the page while I'm trying to find it!
I think it just needs to be a little bit lighter!
I hope that I haven't upset anyone who loves it this colour! :D
Sorry!

p.s.......Also there's not an obvious place (if there is I cant see it) where you go to update your profile, this seems the same board as another site i've been to and they had a "Your Profile" bit at the top left hand corner....I cant see anything like this!
You people and your dark monitors. :p

Oh yeah?? You people and your gigantic signatures...
If you know of a better way to draw attention to your new site that doesn't involve the phrase "barely legal," I'd like to hear it.
Austruck
04-29-03, 01:45 PM
Fair enough.
I just find it funny that, on your shorter posts, the sig is twice as big as the actual post.
Although, yes, it accomplishes its purposes. I have the dang site bookmarked, and yet I feel this overwhelming urge to click on your signature because that thing is just TAUNTING ME!
Kinda like the History Eraser Button...the big, shiny button....
"A beautiful shiny button...a jolly, candylike button..."
The signature bugs me, too, actually; but it brings it maybe 5-10 visitors a day just by sitting there, so, I'm determined to keep it while the site is still in its infancy. Or something.

Well, I'm telling all my writer friends about the site. Most writers love a good quotation site.
Do you take submissions for new quotes, or are you only using ones for which you can verify sources??
I've been meaning to setup a "Submit a Quote" page for awhile, but haven't yet gotten around to it. I'll gladly accept quotes from others, though. I apply a tiny bit of scrutiny to each (if the quote sounds familiar, or doesn't "fit" the author its attributed to, I'll often investigate a little), but very few are dead wrong, so no, I don't mind accepting submissions. The database would be far too small if I applied any significant level of verification for each quote.
OI! Chris why dont you anwser one of my questions for a change huh huh huh? yeaaahhh :D (See Above)
I'm glad to report that, in the 3+ months since I posted this thread, I've made a fair amount of progress. I've got most of the new mainpage done, and I'm currently focusing on each specific site area in turn. It's taking awhile, no doubt, but the results are undeniably superior. The slow, meticulousness nature of the development is really paying dividends.
It's a shame that each step forward takes longer than I'd like, but I can't deny that the time invested seems to be paying off, as I'm very satisfied with the quality of the progression.
Anyway, please, please, keep the suggestions coming. I'm getting to the point where I have to "lock in" various bits of functionality, and come to some decisions as to how I want to lay certain things out...so the window for employing ideas that haven't been proposed/considered yet is steadily shrinking.
I'll update y'all again before long.

Oh what about the top bar with the links eg

Sorry to go off-topic here, but...
Last Samurai was a great film, until the end. The ending ruined the whole thing for me.
You expect me to believe that out of every single samurai charging towards the army was shot dead, with the one except: Tom Cruise.
That part really took me out of the film.

His hair deflected the bullets...or something. I agree, the movie was outstanding up until that point. I have to say though, being in Japan around the release date for this movie...let me just say that there was 3-story high posters of Ken Watanabe everywhere.

Does Tom Cruise ever die in his movies? Off the top of my head I can't think of a single film in which he dies...unless you count Interview With the Vampire in which he is technically dead. Or, actually, undead, so don't count that...

He dies at the end of that one. Movie studios had to pick a movie star to live enough times to make up for all the times Leo DiCaprio dies. They picked Cruise. lol
