Rant about whatever you want... Movie or miscellaneous..
My rant for today occurred at the library. A few days after I saw my new favorite film "Birdman of Alcatraz" I looked it up at the library to see if it was available - it was. So I make a trip up there and I can't find it anywhere. I even look at the terms "The" or "A" because they make mistakes constantly, mixing foreign films, and vice-versa. So I asked the librarian about this, and she said it's definitely there (magnetic bar code), but that it's misplaced. There's only on huge section for videos. I had the same problem in September when I wanted to check out "Seven Samurai" -- almost 6 months, and they haven't "traced" it - nothing.
So I searched film by film, every genre, and nothing. I just wish people put a little more effort. Pay more than minimum wage and maybe you can get someone who knows the alphabet. Pay a little more, and you might find someone like us who knows the difference.

I wouldn't be quick to blame a library worker. More than likely, someone visiting the library picked up the movie and put it somewhere else if they decided they didn't want to check it out.
OR -- someone stole it. Someone might have found a way to steal it. They could have ripped the barcode off the thing and walked out of the library with it without the security alarm going off. That would mean to the system, the item is still in the library, when in reality, it's not -- because someone found a way to sneak it out and take it home.

Matt - does your library not have an online catalog/hold system?
I find it much easier to browse the catalog online and submit a hold online. Then when the hold is ready, I go and pick them up. When I get there, my films are on a separate shelf at the front with my name on them. Doing it this way also gives me easy access to any book, CD or film at any library in my county. I can place a hold on something in a another town and they'll send it to my town's library for me to pick up. It involves waiting a little longer but is much more convenient and less frustrating than searching the shelves myself.

This^^ People move stuff all over the library and the librarians can't help that.

Yeah, it's all online, and to SC's reply, they have to scan the UPC code AND the DVD itself (with videos as well), just in case someone tears off the UPC code, which also isn't easy to do. Not to mention how it's impossible to open the DVD. Someone would definitely notice. There are so many videos missing, and it will say so.
But a good point on how it could be someone who hates those films who thought they'd hide them? In the past, I've done things like that.
I found a way to watch the film :) - No rants for today :)

Maybe it's someone who hates the movie, but how many Birdman of Alcatraz protesters could there be in Flint, Alabama?
I mean, if you're at my town library and the Anime or Foreign Film section is all messed up, there's a reason to point fingers at someone.

Flint, Michigan... But yeah, probably not too many viewers. In fact, almost every single movie I've ever checked out is always there while I go through everything A-Z.
And "Seven Samurai" was last checked out by me... Someone f'ed up. One day I'll see a foreign film in American film section, or a movie with an American title in that section... I guess it depends on whoever is doing it.

But we haven't done MoFo seminars and lectures yet.
That could be the next big thing. You should start this off by making your own seminar and lecture threads here.

I'm so tired of the superfluous use of the word, "Really?" "Really?" - it's usually repeated. And when I hear it on the news, oh man.. Or when old anchor-people use slang and lingo, or hearing Mitt Romney pander to black kids around him and ask "Who let the dogs out" - 1984... Amusing ourselves to death...
I remember when I was in high school 70 years ago, people my age used the words "perturbed" and "asinine" to show how smart they thought they were.
Anyone else notice how our language has been killed? Good became bad, which meant good. A minute used to be 60 seconds, then it turned into a few minutes, now it means a long while. Nothing means anything anymore. It's not something that's going to change my life, but since this is a forum with people outside of my area, I'm just curious how things are wherever you are. Maybe some things you notice that I'm forgetting :)
I'm someone who uses slang a lot, usually with tounge in cheek, so maybe I shouldn't join you in your rant. I do think there is something to be said for the breakdown of our language though. I think most people acknowledge it, but I don't think anyone knows how to fix it.
matt72582
03-01-15, 03:46 PM
I use slang too, but the point is not be misleading.
The biggest problem I didn't mention is how so many people in general might not grasp things, whether it's literature, film, music, if they don't care about vocabulary. Every single day there's a new acronym people are expected to know, but not terms that can specifically pin-point an expression. If there is a simple word, I try to use it so it can be applicable to people of all ages, the idea isn't be pompous, but expression to know exactly what someone is trying to convey. I keep a dictionary right on my table, and even my friends who have books (and it's not many) don't have a dictionary. I think people would never ask what a word means. I've had conversations with a friend about a situation and a word an adult didn't know (sadistic) and my friend who is a lawyer was laughing, but as the conversation progressed, I shyly asked him, "Do you know what sadistic means?" and he said no. His ego basically lied and pretended to know the word, instead of asking.
And for film context.. If someone doesn't know cinema terms, they might miss the entire thing. People make assumptions on what something means, and language doesn't work that way. It's all we have.
Also, when most communication is done with a phone, on my phone the next word will appear. I also think most people aren't going to go in-depth using a keypad, so a conversation is short and concise, which might not be bad, but I'm going to my cousins today just to explain something. He has a phone, out of minutes, and uses this "app" to text, and it would be much easier to talk in person. I notice when I call people, I won't get an answer, but a text back, which isn't a bother, but I can only imagine that our social skills will keep declining. I met an American whose parents paid for his ticket to Asia to he could improve his social skills. So for him, he might not be able to get to Step 2 because of other issues. I remember the guy would drink all day just so he'd be loose enough to say a few words. I think the world is better when everyone who wants to has a say.

I wasn't going to post in this thread because I know that SC is going to make some kind of crazy comment, but I'm so angry right now that I have to rant to someone.
First of all, you have to understand that hubby's normal work day usually starts at either 8:00 AM or 9:00 AM, but once every few weeks, he gets a late day when he doesn't have to be at work until either 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM and he works the late shift. Today was one of those days, when he wasn't supposed to be in until 3:00 PM, so we were up very late last night because we knew that he could sleep late today.
Well, it snowed most of the night, and it's still snowing now, so the boss is expecting it to be so slow today that he doesn't need everyone to come in today, so hubby gets the day off. That would normally be great news, but...
What kind of an idiot calls someone at 7:45 AM to tell him that he doesn't have to come in today, when he's not scheduled to be at work until 3:00 PM???!!! :furiousdevil:

So, I just got accused of being a suck-up by Neill Blomkamp's cousin, Steven, for sending him my screenplay and then tweeting Neill Blomkamp. Seriously? I wasn't pressuring him or anything, the conversation just seemed to highlight on the fact that we were both Alien fans, so I sent him my script. I appreciate the pointers, but then he turns around and complains about it on Twitter. I attempt to alleviate his concerns, just explaining that I am no more than a huge Alien fan, like Neill himself, and he turns around and BLOCKS ME. Well, okay then, doesn't change anything I'll march my ass up to Canada and talk to Neill in person if I have to (or Sigourney Weaver herself if he refuses to listen), and I am still going to call 20th Century Fox, Scott Free and ADI once it is solicited, that way they won't be able to turn me away with the age-old, "we don't accept unsolicited material" excuse. And unlike Neill, Fox owns Alien, so he works for them. /End rant. Glad you allowed me to vent my frustrations, MoFo.

Was your husband even bothered or was it just you since you say you couldn't get back to sleep for another two hours and 15 minutes? What happened? Did hubby roll over on top of you and go at it for that long?? Go, hubby, go!

Yeah if you are passionate and determined, keep going. Still why don't you write an Original screenplay completely unrelated to the Alien Franchise (or any other movies for that matter)? The amount of Alien, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc, Screenplays that get sent to guys in the Sci-Fi industry must be staggering, not to crush any hopes but if you aren't trolling here what makes you think your Alien Screenplay is better than the no doubt thousands these guys have recieved already?

I work through the night, so I didn't go to sleep until after 6:30 AM, so I had about an hour of sleep before the phone woke me. It's not easy for me to get back to sleep when I'm aggravated, so I had trouble getting back to sleep.
Hubby was angry too, but he stayed up to get some computer work done.
His boss knew that it was hubby's late day, and it was very inconsiderate of him to call that early in the morning just to tell him that he didn't have to go to work. (It's like when they wake you in the hospital to give you a sleeping pill.)
And if you don't see anything wrong with what his boss did, then that just means that you probably would have done something just as stupid and inconsiderate as his boss did.
GB, that's not that early, for one thing, but it's also not your bosses fault that you stayed up all night. He called to give you good news - instead of getting upset about it, try being happy.

Yeah, but his boss knew that it was hubby's only day to sleep late. (It's something that they've talked about at work.) There was no reason to wake him at 7:45 AM when he could have just waited until around Noon to call him with the same information.

Yeah, I mean -- yes, I get that it woke you up -- but on another hand, it means you don't have to be stressed about waking up on time to get ready for work and you still don't know yet if you have to work or not.
Even if he had called at 11 AM or noon, he probably still would have woke you up.
Personally, I'd rather know as soon as possible. Then I'm not stressed about what's gonna happen right before it should happen. I could sleep relieved knowing that I don't have to worry about work. That would make sleep a lot easier for me.

I highly doubt they worked on their respective screenplays for six years, consistently and rigorously researching proper screenplay etiquette. Now, no doubt Fox receives probably hundreds of thousands of screenplays, a thousand of which are probably Aliens screenplays . . . who's the one guy these film companies and departments are going to be talking with each other about who keeps calling every day twice a day, only to find out they're all talking about the same person. Ripple effects. The only thing holding me back is that the screenplay in question is, as of this moment, unsolicited. But that could change tomorrow if neighbor lets me borrow his car.
Maybe it's just me but i'd prefer my boss told me as soon as possible that i had the day off, so that i had a chance to decide what to do on that extra day. Even if it was sleeping, i'd prefer he phoned me at 7.30 AM than phoning an Hour or whenever you expected him to phone before your Husband started work.

Depending on the laws in your area, if you show up for work at your scheduled time and get sent home early, your employer owes you something called Reporting Time Pay so it may be important that the boss lets your husband know asap.

Maybe it's all those toys she has decorated all over her house. Maybe she can't sleep because they're all staring at her. It takes awhile for her to ignore all the plastic Disney Princesses and the Woody and Buzz dolls from Toy Story giving her salacious/murderous looks. That would probably keep me awake, too.

The real question is -- why did it take you over 2 hours to fall asleep again?
I mean, seriously -- did you really spend all that time in bed angry because the boss called??? You couldn't relax at all after that?????
I don't know why, but I've always had trouble falling asleep, regardless of how tired I am at the time.

The bedroom has a Marvin the Martian display, not Disney. :)

I'm the same, though I usually find falling back to sleep quite easy. But I can lay there for hours waiting to go to sleep, even when I knackered.

I just wonder if this happens in your town. Those who work at The Department of Human Services in Flint aren't even humans. I exploded today after so much laziness. I have always supported government workers, but when it deals with my health, and you aren't working, just collecting the check, I'm going to get pissed off. They never pick up their phone, I've had to miss appointments... I leave a few voice mails, and I get a response of "Go online" - when I gave her so much information. I had a neighbor (a bigot) who worked there, just collected her money, was on Facebook all day long, great benefits... And there isn't a thing I can do about it. Even the MAIN office wasn't picking up their calls. I call the Supervisor - no answer, no call back yet, just waiting while I have to continue to miss appointments - not to mention I go to PT 3 times a week, had a doctor's appointment..
One place says my insurance is active, another place says it isn't. What a joke... Not the way I wanted to start my day, and I'm only telling you guys because you probably care or at least can understand more than these bozos. You guys are human! Hooray!

"If someone throws you a Frisbee of information…"
(I wrote this earlier, and maybe someone feels the way I do about things
There’s nothing liberal or even liberating about the Democratic party. But people insert their ego ahead of the truth. They’ve invested so much time identifying and even arguing on behalf a group, not of themselves, since one usually trades their individuality for the group, which isn’t similar, except in uniform thinking, which is the only thing a man has as an unalienable right if nothing else.
Misrepresenting yourself with a woman and losing TWICE. You can’t run away from yourself. Some say “I got away with it” – no you didn’t, you know what you did, and that lives with you, as well as the guilt in the action your conscience identifies as corrupting.
I could make money playing music, but I rather do something corrupting with a corruptive business model. I don’t want to infect what I love and either be accepted as I am artistically, or not at all. At least a non-paying open mic allows me my fifteen minutes to communicate with the audience, and though I believe in freedom of speech, having discretion would be nice, since there is only one opportunity to speak to that group of people at that particular moment, and there’s only so much time we have to do anything and everything. I would hate to spend those fifteen minutes explaining why I have the right to say “f**k” repeatedly, which is only necessary if I have nothing of MORE importance to say, more substance.
I challenge myself and other people to a standard set by each individual, and if one strays I only ask questions out of curiosity, not to embarrass. Such as why one changed their outlook on life after 5 minutes, there must be valid reasoning for such extreme and radical change. It also allows one not to adhere to anything, to disregard any form of virtue by not drawing a line in the sand and choosing a side instead of sitting on the fence, having a stockbroker’s mentality for values that change just like the DOW – things go up and down.
Why do I always remember the best things when I’m in bed, trying to sleep? Maybe because I’m only preoccupied with my own thoughts.
I took my 6th Xanax (and 12th in 24 hours) because of the end. I need sleep tonight, and don’t want to fall in a hole of my own thoughts. I rather crawl out of the earth, able to breathe, and out of the sand, able to see. And it’s temporary – tomorrow I’ll go back to 3mg and hope to improve.
If you’re making a salary, guaranteed money regardless of performance, after 5 years, you should be elevated to a higher earning power, not to be at the same position, or maybe even worse, slaving a job that can’t afford mobility. Having to live somewhere in an area you hate to accommodate work. Basically being loyal and concerned with only the party that exploits you.
If you want your ideals to survive, you have to challenge those who say they are just like you, but are frauds, even if it hurts the immediate present to sustain for hopes of a better future, not apologizing for the shortcomings of those you support because you don’t want to show bad judgement. The more I disagree with something, the more I want to understand why.
As for film, I will never understand why people won't give B&W films a chance. I just want a reason, it doesn't even have to be a good one. Art (music, film, comedy) is so lifeless - made in the lab, factory-bought nonsense. Empty gestures as progress.

You've obviously got an awful lot on your mind Matt, hope you feel better when you've had some sleep.
As for your B&W film comment. You have to accept that sometimes people don't have reasons they just have inbuilt prejudices against stuff, even stuff they haven't tried. It might be annoying but don't let it get to you, it's their loss.
Chin up :)

Personally, I love black and white movies.
As Christine said, get some sleep, and do your best to relax. Don't worry about others, when you need to be focusing on yourself.
Smile! :)

AQA - An Ode to
Okay, here we go!
For those who don't know, AQA (Assessment of Qualifications Alliance or something), is one of the major exam boards in the UK, and they're responsible for marking a lot of GCSEs, AS and A2 levels, so 16-18 year old's exams and giving them the correct grades for their qualifications, which, at this stage, are pretty crucial to say the least, and more or less determine what you can do in life. I just finished Year 12, so I just sat my AS (Advanced Subsidiary) levels... and they've completely screwed everything up.
So I did 4 exams for them, one of them was marked by a teacher who works at my sixth form, because he writes some of the History papers, so that means 3 of my exams were sent away. They've managed to get 2 of my exams completely wrong, 2 out of 3... that's two thirds of my exams, and it could potentially effect my application process to my chosen universities, and what's really devastating is that they just could not care less, despite the fact that they're jeopardising mine and so many people's chances at what we want to do.
Okay, so for English Language, my teacher noticed something was wrong with my marks, as in a section of it was totally absent. She phoned them up, and their incompetent arses told her I'd missed half of the exam, which wasn't the case at all, so she demanded to speak to his superiors... and they admitted fault in the end. My exam went up my 18 marks, which is over 2 grades, which just shows how crap they were the first time.
Then English Literature, everyone at my sixth form, including people expected to get into Cambridge, got E's and U's in their exams, and after weeks of negotiating and them telling us they re not at fault when they blatantly are (this happened across the country this year to quite a significant amount of places). They got them re-marked and everyone's (again this happened around the country) received exactly the same amount of marks which is suspicious in itself for such a subjective subject like Literature. However, just today they've asked my sixth form for permission to look at more papers, so it looks as though they're beginning to notice they've made a mistake.
My teacher also said she noticed an advertisement asking for AS markers... meaning they've literally picked people off the street to mark these exams, and when my teacher received a couple of papers back, they had a few ticks on and that was it, as if they were totally out of their depth and just bullsh*tted their way through every exam.
It just pretty heartbreaking to be honest, Lit and Creative Writing is what I want to do at uni and professionally someday, so I revised my ass off for Lit and I felt so confident after finishing the exam because it was actually really kind. So to open your slip and see you got a 'U' in your exam was totally soul destroying, and they just could not care less at all, and treat us like an absolute burden. So to parents in the UK who have kids, do not let them sit any exams under AQA, because the number of complaints they receive keeps on increasing by the thousands every year, and these few weeks have been total hell. Total disgrace really.
